Bailey Vess

ROCK HILL - Miss Bailey Sue Vess, seven-week old daughter of Jason Wayne Vess and Kelly Sue Boothby of 1354 Candy Lane, died Thursday, Jan. 14, 1999, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Seventh Day Adventist Church of Rock Hill, with the Revs. Ron Davis and Rick Sturgis officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Surviving in addition of her parents are her twin sister, Breanna Jaycee Vess; her paternal grandparents, Harold and Becky Vess of Rock Hill; her paternal great-grandmother, Elva Dalrymple of Rock Hill; her paternal great-grandparents, Guy and Beulah Vess of Rock Hill; her maternal great-grandparents, Hubert and Suzanne Garman of Warsaw, Va.; and her maternal great-grandmother, Mrs. Marion Boothby of Altoona, Fla.

Memorials may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Rock Hill, 255 Neely Store Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730, or to Oakwood Acres Baptist Church, 2215 Oakwood Circle, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

David Whitley Jr.

EDGEMOOR - Mr. David M. Whitley Jr., 80, of 1931 Nell Ramsey Road died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at his home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Harmony Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bob Porterfield officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A native of Concord, N.C., Mr. Whitley was a member of Harmony Baptist Church, a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and a retired salesman.

Surviving are his wife, Azilee Ramsey Whitley; two sons, David R. Whitely of North Augusta and Craig A. Whitley of Richmond, Va.; his daughter, Sue W. Preslar of Monroe, N.C.; his sister, Doris Cathcart of Miami, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Memorials be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 South Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Bass Funeral Home.

Claude Horton

LANCASTER - Mr. Claude O. Horton, 79, died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Lexington Medical Center in Columbia.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Second Baptist Church, with the Revs. James D. Spencer III and Hubert H. Welch officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park. The American Legion will give a flag ceremony.

Mr. Horton was a native of Lancaster County. He was a World War II Army veteran, a 50-year member of the American Legion and had held every position in the American Legion on the post, district, zone and state levels. He was a retired employee of Springs Industries, a member of Second Baptist Church and a Shriner.

Mr. Horton was the widower of Evelyn Truesdale Horton. Surviving are his three sons, Ronnie Horton and Randy Horton, both of Columbia, and Dale Horton of Lancaster; his daughter, Karol Newboult of Columbia; two brothers, Poovey Horton of Columbia and Jack Horton of Lancaster; his sister, Ethel Williams of Lancaster; and 11 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church building fund, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Ethel Williams, 1618 Summit Ave.

Thomas Horton

KERSHAW - Mr. Thomas Henry Horton, 76, of 1799 Jones Road died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, with the Revs. Clarence Allen, Todd Horton and N.J. Neely officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Horton was a native of Jefferson and was retired from Kendal Co. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and a member of Mount Pisgah Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Ruby Evelyn Sowell Horton; his son, Thomas Roger Horton of Lugoff; two daughters, Patricia Jordan of Lancaster and Cindy Truesdale of Camden; two brothers, Bobby Horton of Kershaw and Donnie Horton of Jefferson; three sisters, Louise Byrd, Jessie M. Thompson and Margie Johnson, all of Jefferson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mount Pisgah Baptist Church, 2140 McBee Highway, Jefferson, SC 29718.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Jacquelyn Peach

KERSHAW - Mrs. Jacquelyn Dorita Maples Peach, 62, of 3339 Old Georgetown Road died Saturday, Jan. 16, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Laurel Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bobby Owens officiating. Burial will be at Bethany Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mrs. Peach was retired from Garan Inc. and was a member of the Sheppard Fire Department for five years. She was a member of Laurel Hill Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Joe Richard Peach Sr.; two sons, Joe Richard Peach Jr. of Bossier City, La., and Jerry Peach Sr. of Ackerman, Miss.; four daughters, Judy P. Caudill of Nashville, Tenn., Jeannie Kraus of Grain Valley, Mo., Janice Chaney of Willis, Texas, and Jenny Hartness of Starkville, Miss.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Robert Peach, 3348 Old Georgetown Road.

Anthony Sherk

LAVEEN, Ariz. - Mr. Anthony Dennis Sherk, 45, of 6843 S. 64th Ave. died Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, at Phoenix Baptist Hospital.

A memorial service was Friday at Laveen Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jerry Neal officiating and Phoenix Central High School Choir assisting.

Mr. Sherk, a native of State College, Pa., was the fine arts department chairman at Phoenix Central High School. He was a member of the Music Educators National Conference and the Arizona Choral Directors Association. He served on the Arizona Board of Education for the School for the Blind and Deaf. He also was a 4-H leader and a youth softball coach. He was a member of Laveen Baptist Church.

Mr. Sherk was a 1975 graduate of the University of Toledo with a bachelor's degree in music education. He earned a master's degree in choral conducting from Arizona State University in 1977.

Surviving are his wife, Cheryl Sherk; his son, Joshua Sherk of the home; his daughter, Erin Sherk of the home; his parents, Juanita and Dennis Sherk of State College; and two brothers, Doug Sherk of Roanoke, Va., and Chris Sherk of Rock Hill.

A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Funeral Home of Phoenix was in charge.

Memorials may be made to the Laveen Baptist Church bell choir fund, 5036 W. Dobbins St., Laveen, AZ, 85339.

Christine Wilkes

CHESTER - Mrs. Christine Price Wilkes, 81, of 513 W. White St. died Sunday, Jan. 17, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at First Church of the Nazarene, with the Revs. Greg Keller and Gary Adkins officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Monroe, N.C., Mrs. Wilkes was a homemaker, a member of First Church of the Nazarene and attended Chester County schools.

Surviving are two sons, Robert "Bob" Price of Charlotte and Jerry Price of Chester; four daughters, Audrey Patsy Boyd of Rock Hill, Dolly Copeland of Chester, Brenda Crouch of Blackstock and Shirley Helms of Lancaster; three sisters, Lonnie Welch of Charleston, Susie Welch of Gastonia, N.C., and Lucille Wright of Chester; 42 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.
