Ervin Simpson

ROCK HILL - Mr. Ervin Simpson of 428 Baker St. Ext. died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at New Zion Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert C. Brown officiating and the eulogist will be the Rev. E.E. Vance. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Simpson was a native of Fairfield County. He was the widower of Leona Mobley Simpson. He was a cement finisher and worked for the Roberts Construction Co. for a number of years. He attended the public schools of Fairfield County. He was a member of New Zion Baptist Church, and served on the Hymn Choir No. 1, Trustee Board, the AP&B Society, and the Burial Aid Society. He was an U.S. Army veteran of World War II and earned the Philippine Liberation Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Medal, American Theater Ribbon and the Asiatic-Pacific Medal. He was a member of Prince Hall Masonic Lodge No. 109, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Gray Cockerell Post No. 404.

Surviving are three daughters, Daisy S. Brown, Gladys S. McCrorey and Vernice S. Blake, all of Rock Hill; his son, Arthur Simpson of Rock Hill; a brother, Walter Brown Simpson of Rock Hill; three sisters, Hattie Heath, Maggie Jackson, and Fannie Thompson, all of Rock Hill; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Robinson Funeral home and at other times at the home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Robinson Funeral Home is in charge.

Mason Smith

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Mason W. Smith Jr., 79, of 5800 Old Providence Road, formerly of Hickory Grove, died Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at The Carriage Club.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Hickory Grove Cemetery, with the Rev. Roger Dodds officiating.

A native of Harwell County, Ga., Mr. Smith was salutatorian at Spartanburg Junior College and attended Erskine College. He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He worked at Belk's Department Stores and then worked for Springs Mills. He retired as vice-president and regional sales manager for Springs Industries.

Survivors include two sons, Mason W. "Chip" Smith III and John Stuart McKay Smith, both of Charlotte; his daughter, Laris Smith DeSalvo of Metairie, La., his brother, George Robert Smith of Charlotte; his sister, Betty Smith Justice of Lake Lure, N.C.; six grandchildren and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends at 7 tonight at the home of Stuart Smith, 6515 Red Maple lane.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Southern Piedmont Chapter, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC, 28215.

Jimmie Sowell Sr.

SHARON - Mr. Jimmie William Sowell Sr., 75, of 3926 Woodlawn St. died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Hickory Grove, with the Rev. Roger Dodds officiating. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Sowell was retired owner and operator of Sowell Meat Market in Rock Hill. He was the widower of Marylin Goodman Sowell. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Surviving are three sons, Dicky Sowell of Lenoir, N.C., Kenny Sowell of Simpsonville and Jimmy Sowell Jr. of Rock Hill; his daughter, Kathy Sowell of Simpsonville; his brother, Gene Sowell of Mason, Ariz., three sisters, Ertis Smith of Pickins, Miss., Ruby Yeates and Bernice Watford, both of Jackson, Miss.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at York Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the York County Humane Society, P.O. Box 10261, Rock Hill, SC 29731 or to Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, 2160 Smithford Road, Hickory Grove, SC 29717.

Cameron Barber

ROCK HILL - Cameron "C.L." Barber, the infant son of Denise Barber of 285 Powerhouse St., died Saturday at Piedmont Medical Center.

Arrangements are incomplete but will be handled by Robinson Funeral Home.

Allie Branyon

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Allie Clamp Branyon, 83, of 639 Guilford Road died Saturday, Jan. 9, 1999, at Beverly Health Care.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Monday at Oakland Baptist Church, with the Rev. Robert Shrum officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mrs. Branyon is a native of Abbeville and a charter member of Oakland Baptist Church. She was a member of the Rock Hill Women's Club, a 30-year volunteer for the Red Cross and volunteered at elections. Mrs. Branyon was retired from Field Enterprises, where she was district manager.

Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Branyon Johnson of Mooresville, N.C., and Rosemary Branyon Grant of Greenville; two sons, John Bertrand Branyon Jr. of Charleston and Charlie Ellis Branyon II of Summerville; 13 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Oakland Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society.

Mamie Hall

LANCASTER - Mrs. Mamie Ellis Hall, 83, of White Oak Manor died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel, with Dr. Jim Spencer officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

A native of Kershaw County, Mrs. Hall was retired from Springs Industries and was of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Cleveland A. Hall.

Surviving are two sons, James E. "Pete" Hall of West Columbia and Cleveland L. "Boot" Hall of Lancaster; her daughter, Margie Barrineau of Lancaster; her sister, Myrtle E. Deese of Wilmington, N.C.; and 12 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Second Baptist Church Piano Fund, 1426 Great Falls Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720 or White Oak Manor, 253 Craig Manor Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Fred Lewis

CHESTER - Mr. Fred Johnson Lewis, 71, of 540 Lancaster Highway, died Friday, Jan. 8, 1999, at S.C. Baptist Medical Center in Columbia.

A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Zion Presbyterian Cemetery, with the Rev. Rick Mason officiating.

Mr. Lewis was a native of Chester County. He was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Mr. Johnson was owner/operator of Our Store on York Road and previously was a manager for W.T. Betts Tire Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Marian L. Lewis; his son, Darryl Lewis of Rock Hill; two daughters, Luann Frazer and Freda Lombardo, both of Chester; his mother, Lula G. Lewis of Chester; his brother, Marion C. Lewis of Rock Hill; four sisters, Margaret Atkinson and Erline Lewis, both of Chester, Ann Webber of Jonesville, La., and Rose Bailey of Spartanburg; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 tonight at the home.

Memorials may be made to Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 126 York St., Chester, SC 29706, or S.C. Chapter of Leukemia Society, 261-B Riverchase Way, Lexington, SC 29072.

Arrangements are being handled by Barron Funeral Home.
