Willie Cornwell

COLUMBIA - Mr. Willie Smith Cornwell, 67, of 108 Bennie Drive died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Ridgewood Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. John Preacher officiating. Burial with full military rites will be at Palmetto Cemetery on Fairfield Road.

A native of Sharon, Mr. Cornwell was a 23-year veteran of the Air Force. He was retired from the South Carolina Electric and Gas Co. He worked part time for Pee Dee Transportation. He was a member of American Legion Post 215 and president of Jubilee Choir and deacon of Ridgewood Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Jessie Mae Green Cornwell; his son, Quentin L. Cornwell of Alabama; five daughters, Shelia R. McClendon, April L. Lipscomb and Robin L. Tisdell, all of Atlanta, Pamela E. Melton of Virginia and Selena J. Crumpton of Winston-Salem, N.C.; his mother, Willie Lee Robinson Cornwell of Chester; two brothers, Ensley Cornwell of Sharon and James Cornwell of Detroit; seven sisters, Eliza Rhinehart, Sarah Good and Mary Kirkpatrick, all of Chester, Frances Woods of York, Ann Cornwell of Rock Hill, Leatha Robinson of Cincinnati and Betty Perry of Kentucky; and 10 grandchildren.

Palmer Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Gore's Funeral Home in charge of local arrangements.

Hurley Ernandez

DAPHNE, Ala. - Mr. Hurley T. Ernandez of Daphne, Ala., formerly of Lando, died Nov. 4, 1998, in Baye Minette, Ala.

Burial was in Mobile, Ala.

A native of Chester, Mr. Ernandez was retired from the Medical Corps of the Army. He attended Erskine College.

Surviving are his wife, Eloise Ernandez; two sons, Hurley Ernandez Jr. and Robert Ernandez, both of Alabama; his daughter, Madge Phillips of Alabama; four brothers, Grady Ernandez of Richburg, Laney Ernandez and Tony Ernandez, both of Edgemoor; and Norman Ernandez of Chester; two sisters, Faye Grubbs of Olar and Carrie Faust of Richburg; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Immanuel Episcopal Church, 200 McMillen Ave., Bay Minette, Ala., or to the charity of one's choice.

Guy Franklin

GREAT FALLS - Mr. Guy Vernon Franklin, 75, of 36 Brookline St. died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Evangel Temple Assembly of God, with the Rev. Mike Sollars and the Rev. David Stewart officiating. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery.

Mr. Franklin was retired from J.P. Stevens Co. He was a member of Evangel Temple Assembly of God. He attended school in Kings Mountain, N.C., and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Sara Varnadore Franklin; his daughter, Norma K. Jayroe of Pawley's Island; his brother, James Franklin of Kings Mountain, N.C.; his sister, Irene Stewart of Gastonia, N.C.; his stepson, Bo Leonhardt of Fort Lawn; two stepdaughters, Renee Hubbard and Diane Baker, both of Great Falls; four grandchildren and six stepgrandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Dantzler-Baker Funeral Home.

J. Mendel Harmon Jr.

LUGOFF - Mr. Judson Mendel Harmon Jr., 57, of Lugoff died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church. Burial will be at 3 p.m. at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Harmon was a senior research engineer with E.I. DuPont for 30 years. He was a 1963 graduate of Clemson University. He was a member of Lyttleton Street United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Georgette Williamson Harmon of Murrells Inlet; his son, Douglas Scott Harmon of Blythewood; his daughter, Mendy Harmon Edwards of Huntersville, N.C.; his mother, Sarah Neely Harmon of Rock Hill; his brother, James David Harmon of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Aberdeen, 1409 Broad St., Camden.

Memorials may be made to Huntington's Disease Society of America, 158 W. 29th St., 7th Floor, New York, NY 10001-5300.

Albert Klapka

FORT MILL - Mr. Albert Dennis Klapka, 58, of 216 Brighton Lane died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at home.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

Mr. Klapka was a sales consultant for Clinton Family Ford in Rock Hill. He was a member of Pinetuck Golf Club.

Surviving are his wife, Mercedes C. Hartman; his son Sgt. 1st Class Donald Klapka of St. Angelo, Texas; two daughters, Renee Schafer of Spring Grove, Pa., and Michele Starnes of Conowingo, Md.; two brothers, Joseph Klapka and Jerry Klapka, both of Baltimore; two sisters, Sis Ritterpusch and Regina Getz, both of Baltimore; and seven grandchildren.

Wolfe Funeral Home is in charge.

George Mackey Jr.

CHESTER - Mr. George Perry Mackey Jr., 57, of 2221 Dead End Road died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Catawba Baptist Church, with the Revs. Steve Bishop and Dr. Tommy Huddleston officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Mackey was a native of Heath Springs and the widower of Tonda Ramsey Mackey. He was an insurance adjuster for Atlantic Claims in Charlotte and operated Mackey's Body Shop in Rock Hill. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 56 in Fort Mill. He was a member of Catawba Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Joyce Grant Mackey; his daughter, Natalie Mackey Wade of Chester; his parents, George and Irene Mackey of Rock Hill; two brothers, Butch Mackey of Rock Hill and Randy Mackey of Sylva, N.C.; and two sisters, Nell Mackey of Sylva, N.C., and Carolyn M. Mackey of Catawba.

Masonic Rites will be performed at 6:45 tonight and the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Greene Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of his parents, 925 Neely Store Road, Rock Hill.

Vergil Nivens

ROCK HILL - Mr. Vergil Andrew Nivens, 79, of 905 Kemper Circle died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church in York, with the Rev. James Correll officiating and the Rev. Ernie Nivens assisting. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in York.

Mr. Nivens was a native of York and a graduate of York High School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the 1st Air Force as crew chief of P-47 fighter planes. He worked for Pilot Life Insurance Co. as an agent, staff manager, training instructor and district manager. He also worked as district manager for State Capital Insurance Co.'s Charlotte office. He later worked as manager for American Home Life Insurance Co. in the Rock Hill office. He worked for White Office Machine Co. as a salesman after he left the insurance industry. He and his wife later opened Nivens Office Supplies Co. in York. After retirement, he worked for Wiley Brothers Monument and Granite Co. in York and for the Regency Motel in Rock Hill as a night desk clerk.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and was a Sunday school teacher and choir member for many years. He was a lay leader, chairman of the board and a lay delegate to the annual conference.

He was past president of the York County Underwriters Association, and a past member of the Rock Hill Lions Club and the York Men's Chorus Group.

Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Ramsey Nivens; his son, D. Andrew Nivens of Kannapolis, N.C.; two brothers, David Nivens of Rock Hill and Lewis Nivens of Dayton, Ohio; three sisters, Mary N. Hogue of York, and Margaret N. Turney and Bobbie N. Thompson, both of Rock Hill; and his grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Trinity Parlor, Trinity United Methodist Church.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 376, York, SC 29745.
