Henry Miller

ROCK HILL - Mr. Henry Leon Miller, 74, of 1530 Stroupe St. died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hopewell Baptist Church, with the Revs. Jacob Burris, E.E. Vance, and Dr. Charles Pratt officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Miller was sergeant in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of King Solomon Lodge No. 5, Boyd's Temple No. 1, and Sterling Lodge No. 344. He was a member of Mount Hopewell Baptist Church and a graduate of Emmett Scott High School.

Surviving are his son, James Smith of Rock Hill; two daughters, Bolita Young of Rock Hill and Katie Jean Bradshaw of Upper Marlboro, Md.; his sister, Geneva Garylon of St. Albany, N.Y.; his companion, Willie Mae Young of Rock Hill; and three grandchildren.

The body may be viewed at 2 p.m. Friday, and the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Saturday.

Robert Olcott

LAKE WYLIE - Mr. Robert "Bob" Shoemaker Olcott, 75, of 31 Fairway Ridge died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A memorial service will be at a later date.

Mr. Olcott was a retired salesman and partner with Southworth Machinery Inc. of Albany, N.Y.

He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II serving as a pilot in the European Theater. He was a past board member of the River Hills Country Club and the River Hills Community Association. He was a member of the River Hills Lions Club. He was a graduate of Exeter School in Exeter, N.H., and Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and was an active alumnus of both schools.

Surviving are his wife, Jessie MacFadyen Olcott; his son, Robert Alexander Olcott of Albany, N.C.; three daughters, Lois Olcott Price of Swedesboro, N.J., Jessie Olcott Siegfried of Chicago, Ill., and Susan Peck Olcott of Morgantown, W.Va.; and four grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to River Hills Emergency Squad, 4 Heritage Drive, Lake Wylie, SC 29710.

Greene Funeral Home in Rock Hill is in charge.

Gerry Sloan

SHELBY, N.C. - Mrs. Gerald "Gerry" Sue Baxter Sloan, 61, of 1555 Timberlake Drive died Wednesday, Dec. 2, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Stamey Funeral Home, with the Rev. Sam Snyder officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Memorial Park.

Mrs. Sloan was a bookkeeper. She was a volunteer for LIVE, the Department of Social Services and the restoration of the Cleveland County Carousel. She attended Northside Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, Clay Sloan Sr.; two sons, Carl C. Sloan Jr. of Clover and Terry Sloan of Shelby, N.C.; her daughter, Jan S. Fortenberry of Casar; her brother, Bill Baxter of Statesville, N.C.; her sister, Toni Mullaney of Waynesville, N.C.; five grandchildren and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Stamey Funeral Home.

Annie Wilkerson

HICKORY GROVE - Mrs. Annie Mae Stephenson Wilkerson, 92, of Hickory Grove died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, at White Oak Manor Nursing Home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Roger Dodd officiating. Burial will be at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Wilkerson was a retired teacher and taught in the Hickory Grove area for 42 years. She was a graduate of Winthrop College. She was a member of Mount Vernon United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Morgan J. Wilkerson.

Surviving are her stepson, Dr. Leon C. Wilkerson of Fulton, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Opal W. Dickerson of Spartanburg and LaRue W. Sauls of Ridgeland; her sister, Pat S. Shelley of Marion; nine stepgrandchildren; and 15 stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday at Mount Vernon United Methodist Church.

Mary Wood

SPARTANBURG - Mrs. Mary Eleanor Grantham Wood, 80, of Spartanburg died Monday, Nov. 30, 1998.

The memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. today at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Revs. A. Mickey Fisher, Dr. Clay H. Turner and Dr. Lynnwood Jordan officiating. Burial will be at Hill Crest Memorial Cemetery in Savannah, Ga., at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Revs. William Hester and Lynn A. Drake officiating.

Mrs. Wood was in the first graduating class at Armstrong Junior College, now Armstrong Atlantic Coastal University in Savannah, Ga., and a graduate of the University of Georgia. She was past president of the Pickney District Chapter of the South Carolina Society, past president of the National Society of Daughters of Colonial Wars in the state of South Carolina and served as senior state president of the South Carolina Society Children of the American Revolution. She was a member of the National Society of Daughters of the American Colonies, National Society Colonial Dames Seventeenth Century, Colonial Society Daughters of Indian Wars, National Society of New England Women, United Daughters of the Confederacy, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the 96th Infantry Division Auxiliary, Trinity United Methodist Church and the Alpha Gamma Delta Fraternity.

Mrs. Wood taught English in the Spartanburg County schools and at Cleveland Junior High School.

Surviving are her husband, Lt. Col. Samuel S. Wood Sr. (AUS Retired); two daughters, Sally Hlavey of Alberta, Canada, and Mary Eleanor Smith of North Augusta; two sons, LTC (USA Ret.) Samuel S. Wood Jr. of Fort Mill and William Grantham Wood of Spartanburg; and five grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Tamassee DAR School, Mobile Meals of Spartanburg or the charity of one's choice.

The J.F. Floyd Mortuary, North Church Street Chapel, is in charge.

Marie Frances Bass

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Marie Frances Zurawski Bass, 51, of 1118 Pinecrest Drive died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at home.

The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne Catholic Church, with Father William Pentis officiating. Burial will be private.

Mrs. Bass owned Marie's Photography and was associated with Bill Fortune Photography in Lancaster. She was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church and Breast Friends.

Surviving are her husband, Paul H. Bass of Rock Hill; her son, Paul H. Bass Jr. of Birmingham, Ala.; two daughters, Margaret A. Herdegen of Columbia and Elizabeth M. Bass of Rock Hill; her mother, Theresa Molinari Zurawski of White House Station, N.J.; and two brothers, Henry Zurawski and Joseph Zurawski, both of White House Station.

A vigil service will be 7 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service until 9 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society of York County, 339 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Ethel Brown

CHESTER - Mrs. Ethel Murray Brown, 93, died Thursday, Dec. 3, 1998, at Plantation Estates in Matthews, N.C.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Chester Memorial Gardens, with the Rev. Clay Waldrip officiating.

A native of Lilesville, N.C., Mrs. Brown owned and operated dress shops in Chester and Wadesboro, N.C. She was a graduate of Lilesville High School and a member of Chester First Baptist Church. She was an active member of the Mecklenburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Surviving are her son, Donald Bayne Murray of Chester; two sisters, Alma Boswell of Badin, N.C., and Virginia McLean of Wadesboro, N.C.; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of her son, Don Murray, 118 Sunset Drive, Chester.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 518, Chester, SC 29706.
