Earnest Ross Blew III

ROCK HILL - Earnest Ross Blew III, who died at home Tuesday after a struggle with lung cancer, is remembered by his friends as an avid competitor who always tried to understand both sides of an issue.

Blew was corporate director of human resources for Scandura Inc. of Charlotte for the past nine years and previously was a vice president of public and industrial relations for Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. for 10 years.

He held numerous human resources management positions in the chemicals, textiles, fibers and plastic industries, including the Cel River Plant of Celanese. He received his degree in labor and industrial relations from the University of Buffalo.

Marshall Doswell of Fort Mill remembers the respect Blew earned for the way he handled labor disputes.

"He handled potential controversy with a great deal of skill, " Doswell said. "He was very calm and deliberate and low key and had respect for the other side. He very often spoke with admiration for people on the other side and the way they handled their job."

Doswell, who established and headed a public relations department for Springs Industries before retiring as vice-president of corporate communications in 1986, became friends with Blew at industry meetings. Their friendship spanned 25 years.

A few months ago, Blew asked Doswell if he would give the homily at his funeral.

"He handled it with dignity and handled it with a lot of courage, " Dosewell said of Blew's struggle with lung cancer.

Blew was not only dedicated to his job but active in his community as well.

He was a former chairman of the board of directors of the Salvation Army and former chairman of the Board of York County American Red Cross. He was a former advisor of the Junior Achievement of Rock Hill, past president of the Rock Hill Chapter of the American Society for personnel administration, former member of the Rock Hill Rotary, a member of the Elks Club, board of directors for the Rock Hill Chamber of Commerce, and a founding board member of the Charlotte Area Compensation Council. He was a member of the South Carolina Textiles Manufacturers Association.

Doswell said Blew was an ardent golfer who was dedicated to his family and always interested in what was going on in the world. He was also a friend you could count on.

"When he told you something, you could bank on it, " Doswell said.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at First ARP Church, with the Rev. Dr. Robert J. Robinson and Marshall Doswell officiating. Burial will be at Rock Hill Memorial Gardens.
