LeRoy Counterman

RICHBURG - Mr. LeRoy Counterman, 78, of 1863 Brown Road died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at Providence Hospital in Columbia.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Rev. Rodney Foster officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

A native of Rockford, Ohio, Mr. Counterman was a retired farmer. He was an Army/Air Force veteran of World War II and received the American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Y. Counterman; two sons, Steve Counterman of Chester and Neal Counterman of York; his daughter, Lynn C. Bain of Pensacola, Fla.; two brothers, Glenn Counterman of Celina, Ohio, and Gene Counterman of Deshler, Ohio; two sisters, Mary Louise Hull and Marie Schnare, both of Celina; seven grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Barron Funeral Home.

Carolyn Doggett

LAKE WYLIE - Mrs. Carolyn Harrill Doggett, 72, of River Hills Plantation died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at River Hills Community Church, with the Rev. Russ Brown officiating.

Mrs. Doggett graduated from the Women's College of the University of North Carolina Greensboro in 1947. She was an active member of the Ladies Golf Association of River Hills and the River Hills Community Church.

Surviving are her husband, Thomas O. Doggett Sr.; three sons, T.O. Doggett Jr. of Charleston, Scott B. Doggett of Dublin, Ohio, and C. Tyler Doggett of Boulder, Colo.; six sisters, Betty Jean Roper of Lake City, Fla., Doris Yelton of Bowling Green, Ky., Flo Stines and Gail Hecht, both of Morganton, N.C., Martha Jo Deal of Statesville, N.C., and Millie Burgess of Seymour, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the church after the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the River Hills Emergency Squad, 4 Heritage Drive, Lake Wylie, SC 29710.

M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

Sylvia Erby

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sylvia Burris Erby, 79, of 209 Whitner St. died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Mount Zion Baptist Church, with Dr. John T. McCoy officiating and Dr. O. Roddey, and the Revs. Sidney Murdock, Alvin T. Murdock, Joe Lee, Bobby L. Featherstone and Evangelist Sandra McCoy assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

A retired domestic worker, Mrs. Erby was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church. She was a member of the hymn choir, the missionary society, AP&B Society No. 8 and Sterling Lodge No. 344. She attended York County public schools. She was the widow of Preston Erby.

Surviving are her son, William "Bo" Erby of Rock Hill; her brother, Sammy Burriss of Charlotte; five sisters, Marie Burris of High Point, N.C., Mattie Campbell and Carrie Gilmore, both of Charlotte, Lucille Pressely of Scotts Plains, N.J., and Beatrice Paden of East Orange, N.J.; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The body may be viewed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the church from 2:30 p.m. today until the service and at other times at the home of B.R. Sanders, 800 Hawley Road in McConnells.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. today.

Elsie Garvin

YORK - Mrs. Elsie Brindle Garvin, 83, of 1350 Garvin Road died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Philadelphia United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Lee Phillips officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Garvin was a homemaker and a member of Philadelphia United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Boney Garvin.

Surviving are two sons, Boney Phillip Garvin of Wauchula, Fla., and Thomas Coleman "T.C." Garvin of York; her daughter, Rebecca Garvin Brazell of York; two brothers, Havern Brindle of York and Joe Brindle of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at York Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Philadelphia United Methodist Church, 2343 S. Highway 321, York, SC 29745.

Timothy Hagans

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mr. Timothy Michael Hagans, 50, of 3900 St. Regis Drive, formerly of Clover, died Wednesday, Dec. 30, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home in Clover, with the Rev. Billy Miller officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

Mr. Hagans was an Army veteran of Vietnam. He was a pilot with Mountain Air Cargo.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Watford Hagans; his son, Jamie Hagans of Bessemer City, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Michelle Herring and Amy Jarrett, both of Gastonia; and his sister, Peggy Martin of Meridan, Conn.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home, Clover, and at other times at 3781 St. Regis Drive.

Bruce Hammond

LANCASTER - Mr. Bruce Wayne Hammond, 42, of 1699 E. Shiloh-Unity Road died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Glenwood Height Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ron Gregory officiating. Burial will be at Lancaster Memorial Park.

Mr. Hammond was employed by DuPont and was a member of the Whitehall Hunting Club and the Lancaster Bassmasters.

Surviving are his wife, Cheryl Tinsley Hammond; two daughters, Brittney Hammond of Lancaster and Traci Marlow of Fort Mill; two stepdaughters, Lauren Taylor of Woodruff and Jacqueline Page of Lancaster; his father, Floyd George Hammond of Lancaster; his mother, Florence Faile Straugh of Flint, Mich.; his brother, Douglas Hammond of Lancaster; his sister, Audrey Underwood of Lancaster; and his step granddaughter.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Floyd George Hammond, 1699 Pardue St., Lancaster.

Arthur Ligon

BLACKSBURG - Mr. Arthur Eugene Ligon, 76, of 1295 S. Rutherford St. died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at the Veterans Hospital in Asheville, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at White Columns Funeral Service, with the Revs. Lucky Earls, Michael Ford and Greg Martin officiating. Burial will be at Clingman Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Ligon was an Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his son, Tommy Ligon of Blacksburg; five daughters, Doris Jean Phillips of Shelby, N.C., Patricia Green of Lyman, Brenda Clark and Maybell Wright, both of Gaffney, and Libby Phillips of Blacksburg; his brother, Joe Dean Ligon of York; his sister, Dorothy Lanier of Tirzah; 18 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home and at other times at the home of Tommy and Donna Ligon, 369 Jumping Branch Road, Blacksburg.
