John Marshall III (1 of 2)

WASHINGTON - Mr. John D. Marshall III, 42, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rock Hill. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

Mr. Marshall was employed by the Wyndham Center City Hotel of Washington. He was a graduate of Salisbury High School in Salisbury, N.C., and Virginia State University in Petersburg, Va. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church on Capitol Hill.

Surviving are his son, Anthony Jay Marshall of Portsmouth, Va.; his father, John D. Marshall of Fayetteville, N.C.; his mother, Clementine M. Marshall of Petersburg; and two sisters, Cynthia Clear of Plantation, Fla., and Karen Holt of Petersburg.

The body may be viewed from 5 to 7 tonight at Robinson Funeral Home in Rock Hill.

The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church and at other times at the home of his aunt, Jane McCrowey, 793 Laney Terrace, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be sent to St. Mary's Catholic Church, 902 Crawford Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

WASHINGTON - Mr. John D. Marshall III, 42, of Washington died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999.

A service will be 6 tonight at William N. Bland and Son Funeral Home in Petersburg, Va. The funeral service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rock Hill. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park in Rock Hill.

Gayle McArthur

MONTREAT, N.C. - Mrs. Gayle Rankin McArthur, 76, of 116 Mecklenburg Circle, formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at Highland Farms Retirement Community.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Black Mountain Presbyterian Church in Black Mountain, N.C.

A native of Marion, Ala., Mrs. McArthur graduated from Druid Hills High School in Atlanta in 1939. She graduated from the University of Georgia in 1943.

After teaching a term, she worked with Lockheed Marietta during World War II and was involved in the drafting design phase of the electrical system for the B-29 bomber. She and other employees observed the inaugural flight of the first B-29 produced.

She received her master's degree in Christian education in 1946 from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education in Richmond, Va. She became director of Christian education at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill. After two years, she moved to First Presbyterian Church in Decatur, Ga., and in 1950, became director of Christian education at First Presbyterian Church in Houston, Texas. She returned to Rock Hill in 1952.

She served on the Board of Women's Work of the Presbyterian Church and was the recipient of a Life Membership in the Women of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church.

She earned a master's degree in library science from Winthrop University and worked in the Rock Hill public schools as an elementary and middle school librarian.

Surviving are her husband, Clarence A. "Mac" McArthur Jr.; four sons, Clarence Alexander "Sandy" McArthur III of Marietta, Ga.; John Rankin McArthur of Cary, N.C., James Gayle McArthur of Charlotte, and Leigh Pope McArthur of Dunwoody, Ga.; her brother, John Robert "Bob" Rankin of Sun City, Fla.; and eight grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the Gayle Rankin McArthur Scholarship Fund, Union & Presbyterian School of Christian Education, 3401 Brook Road, Richmond, VA 23227 or to Montreat Conference Center, Montreat, NC 28757.

Donald McQueen Jr.

LAURINBURG - Mr. Donald Howard McQueen Jr., 90, of 526 Everette St. died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1998, at the Edwin Morgan Center.

A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church, with the Revs. Nick Mager and Elizabeth Forrester officiating.

Mr. McQueen attended Davidson College and was an Army veteran of World War II. He was retired as vice president and secretary of the Wade S. Dunbar Insurance Agency and was a board member of Scotland Saving & Loan Association, now Scotland Savings Bank. He was a former member of the Laurinburg Lions Club and a former deacon at Laurinburg Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his wife, Loma Hammond McQueen; two sons, Dr. Donald McQueen of Rock Hill and Dr. Jim McQueen of Laurinburg; his sister, Mary Currie of High Point, N.C.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at home.

McDougald Funeral Home and Crematorium is in charge.

Jimmie Sowell Sr.

SHARON - Mr. Jimmie William Sowell Sr., 75, of 3926 Woodlawn St. died Tuesday, Jan. 5, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

Funeral arrangments will be announced by York Funeral Home.

Felicity Adams

CLOVER - Mrs. Felicity Ann Mudd Adams, 62, of 1275 Old Cambridge Road died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Clover First Baptist Church, with the Rev. Dr. William Neely officiating. Burial will be at Woodside Cemetery.

Mrs. Adams was a member of Clover Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are her husband, Billy M. Adams; three sons, David William Adams and Carl Derrick Adams, both of Clover, and Mark Stephen Adams of Aqua Prieto, Mexico; two sisters, Irene Crisco of Hamlet, N.C., and Alice Gaither of Charleston; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at M.L. Ford & Sons Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Clover Presbyterian Church building fund, 202 Kings Mountain Highway, Clover, SC 29710.

Cade Bailey

EDGEMOOR - Mr. Cade J. Bailey, 88, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 1999, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Friday at Harmony Baptist Church, with the Rev. Bob Porterfield officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Bailey was a member of Harmony Baptist Church since 1953. He was retired from Manetta Mills and was active in senior services at the Edgemoor Community Center. He was the widower of Winnie Proctor Bailey.

Surviving is his son, Wade Bailey of Edgemoor.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bass Funeral Home.
