David Smathers

CHARLOTTE - Mr. David Earl Smathers, 69, of Charlotte died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. today at Calvary United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Robert Boggan officiating.

A native of Charlotte, Mr. Smathers retired after 34 years of service with Southern Bell and Western Electric. He owned and operated Antique Clock and Repair. He was a member of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Chapter 17. He was named Member of the Year in 1967 by the Charlotte Watch Makers Guild. He was a member of the Excelsior Lodge No. 261, AF&AM, Scottish Rite.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and the "Pop" Smith Sunday school class.

Surviving are his wife, Patricia Harkey Smathers; two sons, David Smathers II of York and Harold Smathers of Charlotte; two daughters, Pamela Barne of Charlotte and Theresa Hurst of Fort Mill; two sisters, Eugina Royal of Charlotte and Betty Sue Stewart of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren; and two foster grandchildren.

The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall after the service.

Memorials may be made to Calvary United Methodist Church, mission fund, 512 West Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203 or the charity of one's choice.

Heritage Funeral Home of Matthews is in charge.

William Baker Jr.

GREAT FALLS - Mr. William Guy Baker Jr., 77, of 2 Bowden St. died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, in Charlotte.

The graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at Evergreen Cemetery, with the Rev. Clarence Foss officiating.

A native of Great Falls, Mr. Baker was a retired supervisor with J.P. Stevens. He was a graduate of Great Falls High School and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Great Falls Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are his daughter, Carol Ann Claxton of Lake Wateree; two brothers, Heilman Baker and Tommy E. Baker Sr., both of Great Falls; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 p.m. today at Dantzler Baker Funeral Home.

Luther Brown Sr.

CLOVER - Mr. Luther Brown Sr., 83, of 756 Guinn St. died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Fishing Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Osbey Roddey officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Brown was a former painting contractor and former machine operator for American Thread. He was a deacon at Fishing Creek Baptist Church and a former choir leader.

Surviving are four sons, Johnny Brown of York, Charlie Brown of Clover, George Robert Brown of the home and Donald Brown of Rensselaer, N.Y.; five daughters, Mamie Boulware and Frances Love, both of Gastonia, Willene Gadsden of Baxley, Ga., and Jemeka Brown and Latissue Brown, both of the home; and a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the church and at other times at home.

The body may be viewed from noon to 8 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in York.

Lillian Edwards

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Lillian Wilson Edwards, 85, 1007 S. Stonewall St. died Friday, Nov. 13, 1998, at home.

The graveside service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Antioch Cemetery in Loris, with the Rev. Travis Martin officiating.

A native of Loris, Mrs. Edwards was a homemaker and a member of Southside Baptist Church. She was the widow of Lewis Grady Edwards.

Surviving are her son, Jack Edwards of Rock Hill; two daughters, Lila Thomas of Rock Hill and Louise Straub of Charlotte; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and her special friend, Sandy Walker.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Lila Thomas, 1433 Sullivan St., Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association, 3420 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215.

Roy Ennis

ROCK HILL - Mr. Roy L. "Uncle Roy" Ennis, 86, of 1133 Winthrop Drive died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Westminster Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Drs. Shelton Sanford and Bill Fox officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

Mr. Ennis was the manager of the Pix Theater from 1939 to 1971. He was a sales representative for Reynolds and Reynolds Printing Co. from 1971 to 1992. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are nephews and nieces.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Mae Gadpaille

BOSTON - Mrs. Mae Arlene Johnson Gadpaille, 93, of Boston, formerly of Fort Mill, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998.

The funeral was Thursday at New Covenant Christian Center in Boston. Burial was in Ellington Cemetery in Ellington, Ct.

Mrs. Gadpaille graduated from Howard University in 1928. She entered Andover Theological Seminary in the early 1940s and earned a master's degree in theology. She converted to Catholicism in 1949 and in 1959 was ordained as a nun in the order of St. Theresa and lived at the St. Rose Rectory in New Lexington, Ohio.

In the 1980s, she turned to the Pentecostal Church and moved to Fort Mill in 1990. She worked as a prayer counselor with Morris Cerullo World Evangelism Ministries. She left Fort Mill in 1997 to enroll in Rhema Bible Training Center in Tulsa, Okla.

Surviving are her adopted son, Edward L. Williams of Portugal; and nieces and nephews.

Wayne Guidebeck Sr.

YORK - Mr. Wayne Henry Guidebeck Sr., 54, of 3043 Agean Lane died Wednesday, Nov. 11, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 10 a.m. today at M.L. Ford and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Barry Burleson officiating.

Mr. Guideback was a retired Army staff sergeant. He was an active member of Bethel Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Judith Jones Guidebeck; five sons, Bobby J. Guidebeck of Centerville, Va., Wayne H. Guidebeck Jr. of Orlando, Fla., Kirk W. Guidebeck of Grand Prairie, Texas, Christopher G. Guidebeck of Reseda, Calif., and Randall S. Guidebeck of Clover; two daughters, Adele G. Zinner of Louisville, Ky., and Brenda G. Venable of Concord, N.C.; his brother, Ronald Guidebeck of Big Bay, Mich.; his sister, Martha Collins of Cape Coral, Fla.; and 10 grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church building fund, 4160 Hands Mill Highway, York, SC 29745.
