Claude Jordan Jr.

LANCASTER - Mr. Claude Thomas "Whacker" Jordan Jr., 76, of 309 Cedar St. died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A graveside service will be 4 p.m. today at Westside City Cemetery, with the Rev. Kevin Cooley officiating.

A native of Lancaster County, Mr. Jordan was retired from J. Max Hinson Ford Motor Co. and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his son, Dean; two brothers, Fred Jordan of Spartanburg and Jackie Jordan of Lancaster; four sisters, Mary J. Gibson of Lancaster, Lucille Hallowell of Orlando, Fla., Juanita J. Coogler of Chester and Margaret Hinson of Fort Walton Beach, Fla.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Hartley Funeral Home is in charge.

Norman Maring

ROCK HILL - Mr. Norman Hill Maring, 83, died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Baptist Church.

Mr. Maring was a retired professor of church history and a Baptist minister. He was a Chester, Pa., native and had lived in Rock Hill for the past 10 years. He received a bachelor of theology degree from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Philadelphia in 1941 and was ordained at the Pamplico Baptist Church in South Carolina in 1940. He received a master's degree in 1943 and a doctorate in history from the University of Maryland in 1948. His pastorates include Berwyn Church in Maryland and Andrews Baptist Church in Andrews. In 1948, he returned to the Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, where he taught church history for 37 years. He was dean of faculty from 1972 to 1978 and was named professor emeritus when he retired.

Maring was a visiting professor at Hardin-Simmoins University in Abilene, Texas, and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary and was an adjunct professor in the graduate department of religion at Temple University. He authored four books in addition to several journal articles and book reviews. He served on the American Baptist Historical Society board of managers and was president from 1965 to 1969. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church in Rock Hill.

Surviving are his wife, Sara A. Johnson of Rock Hill; his son, Donald Maring of Maple Glen, Pa.; two daughters, Helen Livingston of Tualatin, Ore., and Ruth Sewart of Evanston, Ill.; his brother, Robert L. Maring of Andrews; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Oakland Baptist Church.

Kathleen Woodall

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Kathleen Potts Woodall, 76, of Charlotte, formerly of Dallas, died Saturday, Nov. 7, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with Dr. Richard Auten officiating. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. at Holly Hill Cemetery in Thomasville, N.C.

Mrs. Woodall was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church and a homemaker. She was the widow of Douglas Haywood Woodall.

Surviving are three daughters, Barbara Goodson of Dallas, Carol Norman of Rock Hill and Nancy Woodall of Richmond, Va.; two brothers, Melvin Potts of Thomasville and Clarence Potts of Prattville, Va.; her sister, Christine Oates of Oroville, Calif.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Almond, Rayner & McConnell Funeral Home in Huntersville, N.C.

Memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 6320 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, NC 28216.

Mary Brock

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Elizabeth "Lib" Brock, 75, of White Oak Manor, formerly of Raleigh, N.C., died Sunday, Nov. 8, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Mitchell Funeral Home, St. Mary's Street Chapel in Raleigh, with the Rev. Frank Elliott officiating. Burial will be at Montlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Brock was the widow of William Thomas Brock.

Surviving are two sons, Johnny Brock of Orlando, Fla., and Tommy Brock of Fort Mill; her daughter, Becky Honeycutt of Charlotte; her sister, Rachel Overby of Chesapeake, Va.; three granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Mitchell Funeral Home, 600 St. Mary's St., Raleigh.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Pentecostal Holiness Church, 521 Polk St., Raleigh, NC 27604.

Dorothy Bailey

LANCASTER - Mrs. Dorothy Beatrice Gunter Bailey, 89, of 2907 Great Falls Highway died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Douglas Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Lawrence Peebles officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker, and she was a member of Douglas Presbyterian Church. She was the widow of Heyward William Bailey Sr.

Surviving are three sons, H.W. Bailey Jr. and J. Harvey Bailey, both of Lancaster, and T.J. Bailey of York; three daughters, Betty Gilmer of Kershaw, Macille Broome of Columbia and Dorothy Johnson of Elgin; 14 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Cauthen Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Douglas Presbyterian Church Lighting Fund, 2325 Sunday Place, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Mary Calhoun

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary "Dee" Nelson Calhoun, 82, of 618 Izard St. died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at Beverly Health Care.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. today at Flint Hill Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Durham officiating. The Rev. David Nelson will give the eulogy. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Greenville, Mrs. Calhoun was employed by Amalgamated Textiles, where she retired after 50 years. She was a member of White Rock Baptist Church, where she was a member of the Helping Hand Club and the Sheepfold of Enoch Club.

Surviving are her brother, Samuel Nelson of Rock Hill; and her niece, Willie Crosby of Rock Hill, with whom she lived.

The family will receive friends from 2:30 to 3 p.m. today at the church. The body may be viewed from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Parker Funeral Home.

Robert Brandon

YORK - Mr. Robert Eugene Brandon, 65, of 102 Barron Park died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at White Oak Manor in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Mr. Brandon was owner and operator of Brandon's Grocery Store. He was a member of Central Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Mittie Ruth Deal Brandon; two sons, Tracy Brandon of York and Steven Brandon of Kings Mountain, N.C.; five daughters, Debra Hoyle, Kimberly Huffstetler and Angela Phillips McCoy, all of York, Kathy Porter of Kings Mountain, and Peggy Jordan of Ohio; three stepsons, Larry Childers of York, and Michael Childers and Joey Childers, both of Hickory Grove; his stepdaughter, Patsy Krepps of York; his brother, James C. Brandon of Rock Hill; three sisters, Nancy Farris and Mary Ellen Puckett, both of York, and Diane Patterson of Clover; 24 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at home.
