David Shaw

FORT MILL - When good things happened in Fort Mill, David Shaw was always right in the middle of them.

"He had a great deal of pride in the community, " Elliott Close said of his friend. "It's a great loss to Fort Mill to lose someone like him."

Shaw, 42, died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

"He was a great guy, " Close said. "The kind of guy who never met a stranger."

Shaw coached and sponsored teams at Leroy Springs Recreation Complex.

"He coached soccer, baseball, basketball. If I had had a hockey team, he would have coached it, too, " said Kenny Gerald, athletic director at the complex.

"The kids loved him. When he coached a team, he demanded a lot, but he demanded a lot from himself, " Gerald said.

Shaw was owner and operator of Shaw Land Surveying Co. in Fort Mill and served as treasurer of the Tri-County Land Surveyors Chapter of the South Carolina Society of Professional Land Surveyors.

A native of Lebanon, Ind., he was a 1975 graduate of Lebanon High School and attended Vinncines University in Indiana. He served four years in the U.S. Navy and was stationed on a fast frigate. He was a member of the Fort Mill American Legion Post No. 43.

Shaw was an active member of the Fort Mill Downtown Association, the Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary. He was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where he served as an usher.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, with Father Jack Hardaway officiating.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Lemmon Shaw; his daughter Julie Ann of the home; his son, Jared Dean Shaw, of the home; his parents, James and Patricia Shaw of Lebanon, Ind.; and his brother, Dan Shaw of Indianapolis.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Fort Mill.

Memorials may be made to the Julie Ann and Jared Shaw Education Fund, P.O. Box 128, Fort Mill, SC 29716 or to the St. Paul Episcopal Church Memorial Ash Garden Fund, P.O. Box 753, Fort Mill, SC 29716.

Blanche Sosebee

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Blanche Cobb Sosebee, 76, of 1920 Ebenezer Road, Apt. 712 died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at Westminster Towers.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the Greene Funeral Home chapel, with the Rev. Bill Shytle officiating. A visitation will follow.

Mrs. Sosebee was a homemaker and was of the Protestant faith. She was the widow of James H. Sosebee.

Surviving are three sons, James F. Sosebee of Lydon, Kan.; William H. Sosebee of Hoffman and Michael T. Sosebee of Oakland, Calif.; her daughter, Dorothy S. Nagle of Fort Mill; two brothers, Earl Cobb and Roy Cobb, both of Easley; three sisters, Gladys Thomas of Easley, Grace Beck of Crestview, Fla., and Carnise Pursley of Ft. Walton, Fla.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Sylvia Steele

CATAWBA - Mrs. Sylvia Huckabee Steele, 62, of 2132 Greystone Circle died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at home.

The graveside service will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Grandview Memorial Park, with the Rev. Jerry McNair officiating.

A native of York County, Mrs. Steele attended New Covenant Baptist Church and worked at Kristi's Korner.

Surviving are her husband, Charlie Steele Sr.; her son, Charlie Steele Jr. of Rock Hill; her daughter, Candy McAlister of Belmont, N.C.; her father, Manning Huckabee of Rock Hill; two brothers, Cedric Huckabee and Phillip Huckabee, both of Rock Hill; three sisters, Adrena Payne, Judy Sistare and Kay Greenwood, all of Rock Hill; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice Community Care, 325 S. Oakland Ave., Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Florence Varnadore

CHESTER - Mrs. Florence Estelle Bigham Varnadore, 96, of 2131 Hardin Strait Road died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at Chester County Nursing Center.

The graveside service will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Mount Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Mary Kearse officiating.

Mrs. Varnadore was a homemaker. She was a member of Mount Prospect United Methodist Church and was the widow of Thomas Douglas Varnadore.

Surviving are two sons, Otis Varnadore of Seattle and Walker Varnadore of Chester; her daughter, Shirley Adkins of Flint, Mich.; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Armenia United Methodist Church building fund, 2840 Armenia Road, Chester, SC 29706.

The family will receive friends at home.

Robert Wilks

FORT MILL - Mr. Robert Lee Wilks of Fort Mill died Thursday, Nov. 5, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Paul Baptist Church in Lowrys, with the Revs. Bobby Featherstone, Fred Lee, Ray Thompson, Daniel Chisholm and Ray Culp officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery. The body will be taken to the church at 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

A native of York County, Mr. Wilks was a lifelong member of St. Paul Baptist Church, where he was choir marshal, a member of the Missionaries and BTU. He was a member of the Golden Elk Lodge No. 102, AP&B Society No. 8 and a retired employee of Springs Industries.

Surviving is his wife, Wilma M. Wilks.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Clemons Funeral Home.

Luther Wright

BLACKSBURG - The Rev. Luther Jennings Wright Jr., 72, of 1040 York Road died Friday, Nov. 6, 1998, at home.

He was retired from FMC Mining Division. Rev. Wright was pastor of the York Church of God.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Broad River Baptist Church, with the Rev. Norman Philbeck officiating. Internment will follow in the Hickory Grove Church of God Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Lela Childers Wright; his daughter, Linda W. Norman of Blacksburg, three sons, Herbert J. Wright and Danny Wright, both of Blacksburg, and Jerry Wright of Gaffney; a sister, Louise W. Owens of Kings Mountain, N.C.; five grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the White Columns Funeral Home in Blacksburg and at other times at the home.
