Samuel Beard III

SANTEE, Calif. - Mr. Samuel Belton "Sam" Beard III, 59, died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998.

The memorial service was Sept. 18 in California.

Mr. Beard was a native of York County.

Surviving are his wife, Cynthia T. Beard; his son, Randy Beard of California; his daughter, Kimberly B. Smith of California; his sister Margaret B. Smith of West Columbia; and four granddaughters.

Neptune Society of El Cajon, Calif., was in charge.

Vernice Alexander

CLOVER - Mrs. Vernice Moore Alexander, 82, of 110 Mobley St. died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at St. James United Methodist Church in York, with the Rev. Keith Hunter officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Alexander was educated in the public schools of York County. A homemaker, she joined Ebenezer AME Zion Church in Smyrna at an early age and later joined Second Calvary Baptist Church in Charlotte. She was the widow of Grady Alexander.

Surviving are four sons, Leonard Alexander and Grady Alexander, both of Charlotte, John Alexander of New Orleans and William Alexander of Clover; two brothers, Tracy Moore of Gastonia, N.C., and Bennie Moore of Smyrna; her sister, Iola Smith of Columbus, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the church and at other times at the home.

Generation Funeral Home is in charge.

Jesse Brackett Sr.

STAFFORD, Va. - Mr. Jesse Donald Brackett Sr., 61, formerly of Rock Hill, died Friday, Oct. 23, 1998, at Mary Washington Hospital.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. today at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg, Va. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Brackett was a certified public accountant and served in the Marine Corps.

Surviving are his wife, Tory Inez Fowler Brackett; four sons, Jesse Donald Brackett Jr. of Stafford, George McCoy Brackett of Hialeah, Fla., Michael Wayne Brackett and Rocky Tod Brackett, both of Spotsylvania, Va.; two daughters, Vicki Juanita Brackett of Boylston, Mass., and Peggy Andora Brackett Franklin of Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers, Walter Brackett of Fort Mill and Thomas Eugene Brackett of Dallas, Ga.; three sisters, Norma Maglioni of Anderson, Elizabeth Strait of Rock Hill and Doris Hughes of Clover; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Suzanna Degraffenreid

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Suzanna Howze Degraffenreid, 83, of 1039-F Glenarden Drive died Thursday, Oct. 22, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Rehoboth AME Zion Church, with the Rev. W.H. Woods Jr. officiating and the Rev. E.E. Vance assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Degraffenreid was a homemaker. She was a member of Rehoboth AME Zion Church where she was a deaconess, missionary and member of the Hymn Choir, stewardess board, Order of the Easter Star Progressive Chapter No. 33 and the AP&B Society. She was a former member of Mount Hopewell Baptist Church and Galilee AME Zion Church

Surviving are three sons, MacArthur Degraffenreid of Chester, Wilbert Degraffenreid and Gene Degraffenreid, both of Edgemoor; five daughters, Johnnie Mae Bell of Chester, Janet Cook, Mary McCrorey, Euda Porter and Betty Williams, all of Rock Hill; her grandson whom she raised, Aaron Lamont Degraffenreid of the home; her sister, Leola Massey of Rock Hill; 44 grandchildren; 63 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Eastern Star Rites will be said when the family receives friends from 6 to 7 tonight at King's Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 9 p.m. today at King's Funeral Home.

Rebecca Dickson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Rebecca Bush Dickson, 95, died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at EdenGardens assisted living.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Laurelwood Cemetery, with the Revs. Dr. Tim McClendon, Linda Dunn and Dr. William Pender officiating.

A native of Inman, Mrs. Dickson was a graduate of Inman High School in 1919 and Winthrop College in 1923. She worked in the registrar's office at Winthrop College and later at family-owned Dickson Supply Co. in Rock Hill. She was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was the widow of John Frank Dickson.

Surviving are three sisters, Charlotte Bush Hall, Edith Bush Alverson and Edna Bush Clarke, all of Inman; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of her granddaughter, Edith Campbell Hartis, 1420 Springsteen Road, Rock Hill.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John's Untied Methodist Church, P.O. Box 149, Rock Hill, SC 29731-6149.

Bass Funeral Home is in charge.

Betty Howard

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Betty Ann Cherry Howard, 38, of 452 Summit St. died Monday, Oct. 26, 1998, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital in Columbia.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Parker Funeral Home.

Inez Montgomery

Columbia - The funeral for Mrs. Leila Inez Rogers Montgomery, 85, will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, with burial at Greenlawn Memorial Park.

Mrs. Montgomery, widow of Dr. Reid H. Montgomery Sr., died Sunday, Oct. 25, 1998. A native of Blenheim, she was a graduate of Columbia College and taught school in Rock Hill, Sumter County and Tallahassee, Fla.

Her late husband retired as secretary manager of the South Carolina Press Association. Prior to that, he was a professor of journalism and director of the news service at Winthrop College and later was a professor of journalism at Florida State University and the University of South Carolina.

Mrs. Montgomery was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church and Wesley Fellowship sunday school class.

Surviving are her son, Dr. Reid H. Montgomery Jr. of Columbia; her daughter, Betty Ann Harris of Henderson, Nev.; two grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Reid H. Montgomery Sr. Endowed Chair, College of Journalism and Mass Communications, USC Educational Foundation, Columbia SC 29208.
