Leon Gilbert

HILTON HEAD - Mr. Leon P. Gilbert of Hilton Head died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998.

A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the James chapel of First Presbyterian Church of Hilton Head.

Mr. Gilbert was employed as a textile chemist with Celanese Corp. of America. After retirement, he served as city manager of Clinton, where he lived for nine years. He served in the Navy during World War II and served on the USS Pennsylvania in the South Pacific. He was active in the local power squadron.

Surviving are his wife, Annette McMurtry Gilbert; three sons, Leon Dale Gilbert of Greenville, Glenn Howell Gilbert of Rock Hill and Todd Lake Gilbert of Portsmouth, N.H.; two daughters, Christie Gilbert Stanton of Loganville, Ga., and Kerrie Gilbert of Atlanta; his stepmother, Minnie Louise Gilbert of Lexington, Ky.; three sisters, Joyce Gilbert Mitchell, Betty Jane Gilbert and Esther Gilbert Cox, all of Lexington; and 12 grandchildren.

Julia Hicklin

GREAT FALLS - Mrs. Julia E. Hicklin, 56, of 2207 McClinton Road died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at Chester County Hospital in Chester.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Mount Nebo AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Sam Latta III officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mrs. Hicklin was a member of Mount Nebo AME Zion Church, where she was a member of the Senior Choir, the planning committee, Stewardess Board, the Usher Board and she was assistant treasurer at the church. She attended Elizabeth Heights High School in Great Falls.

Surviving are her husband, Lewis A. Hicklin; two sons, Willie J. Hicklin and Bobby L. Hicklin, both of the home; five daughters, Willie Mae Hicklin of the home, Teresa Donation of Los Angeles and Mary Truesdale, Pamela Rice, and Linda Hicklin, all of Great Falls; her father, Elliott Manning of Great Falls; her sister, Ruby Dean Patterson of Great Falls; and 17 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 tonight at Washington Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Stanley Whittaker

ROCK HILL - Mr. Stanley Russell Whittaker, 74, of 161 Briarwood Drive died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gene Fuller officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Whittaker was a former supervisor in the packing department at Celanese Corp. He was a member of Oakland Baptist Church and the Elks Club. He was the former president of the coin club of Lancaster, Chester and York counties. He served in the Marine Corps during World War II and earned a Bronze Star.

Surviving are his wife, Jacquelyn Byrd Whittaker; two sons, William R. "Bill" Whittaker of Princeton, W.Va., and Ronald Blake "Ron" Whittaker of Rock Hill; his daughter, Kathy W. Broom of Fort Mill; two brothers, Fred N. Whittaker and Robert A. Whittaker, both of Princeton; his sister, Stella W. Stafford of Salem, Va.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Robert Howze

RICHBURG - Mr. Robert H. Howze, 95, of Lyles Road died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Salisbury, N.C.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by King's Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at the home of Morris and Helen McCorkle, 368 Pendleton St., Rock Hill.

Walter McDaniel

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Walter Louis "Shine" McDaniel of 1309 Dearborn Ave. died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Robinson Funeral Home in Rock Hill.

Letha Mitchell

EASLEY - Mrs. Letha Wright Mitchell, 83, of 706 Pelzer Highway, Countryside Village, formerly of Rock Hill, died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Barkers Creek Baptist Church cemetery.

A native of Honea Path, Mrs. Mitchell was a member of Oakland Baptist Church in Rock Hill. She was the widow of James Shirley Mitchell.

Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Clark of North Myrtle Beach and Sylvia M. Boineau of Greenville; two brothers, William C. Wright and Millard B. Wright, both of Honea Path; two sisters, Madge Branyon and Janie Sue Moore, both of Honea Path; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Barkers Creek Baptist Church.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Pruitt Funeral Home in Honea Path is in charge.

Robert Nelson

LANCASTER - Mr. Robert "Rico" Nelson, 18, of Lancaster died Saturday, Oct. 24, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Thursday at Bright Light Baptist Church, with the Rev. Waylon Wallace officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Nelson attended Lancaster County public schools.

Surviving are his parents, Dianne Nelson and Isaac Jackson Sr., both of Lancaster; five sisters, Brenda Nelson, Tameka Nelson, Cynthia Jackson, Stacey Jackson and Jessica Stevenson, all of Lancaster; seven brothers, Terrance Nelson, Lamont Nelson, Earnest Nelson, Isaac Jackson Jr., Larry Jackson, Stanley Jackson and Chavis Foster, all of Lancaster.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at McCray Funeral Home.

Mary Ramsey

EDGEMOOR - Mrs. Mary Jackson Ramsey, 62, of 1943 Nell Ramsey Road died Tuesday, Oct. 27, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Heath Memorial United Methodist Church, with the Revs. Ronny Jackson, Marion Dry and Mitch Ingram officiating. Burial will be at Edgemoor ARP Church cemetery.

A native of Great Falls, Mrs. Ramsey was a teacher's assistant for 28 years at Lewisville Elementary School. She was a member of Heath Memorial United Methodist Church, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elks Club, and the Chester Lady's Golf Association.

Surviving are her husband, Warren T. Ramsey Sr.; her son, Warren T. "Rusty" Ramsey of Edgemoor; two daughters, Tommy Lynn Tomberlin of Edgemoor and Kathy R. Small of Lancaster; her brother, Johnny B. Jackson of Long Beach, N.C.; three sisters, Minnie Neely and Norma J. Hyatt, both of Great Falls, and Susan J. Carter of Conway; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at home.

Memorials may be made to Edgemoor ARP Church cemetery fund, 2135 Starnes Road, Edgemoor, SC 29712.
