Wendell Harris

ROCK HILL - Mr. Wendell Leon Harris, 63, of 2737 Tealwood Drive died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. Tuesday at Westminster Presbyterian Church with Dr. Shelton P. Sanford III, Dr. William A. Fox Jr. and the Rev. Dave Jennings officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

A native of Gainesville, Ga., Mr. Harris was a Rock Hill police officer for 26 years. He attended Rock Hill public schools and held degrees in criminal justice from the University of South Carolina and Southern Police Institute in Louisville, Ky. He was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church and served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1965.

Surviving are his wife, Catherine Cherry Harris; two sons, Alan Brian Harris of Clinton and Anthony Neal Harris of Hope Mills, N.C.; his daughter, Lisa Annette Harris of Rock Hill; his stepson, George Donald Lucas Jr. of Rock Hill; his mother, Sarah Lucille Harris of Rock Hill; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 p.m. today at Cauthen Funeral Home, Rock Hill Chapel, and other times at the home.

Joseph Hatley

HEATH SPRINGS - Mr. Joseph C. "J.C." Hatley of 115 Cauthen St. died Friday, July 10, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital in Lancaster.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Heath Springs Baptist Church, with the Rev. Warren Johnson officiating.

Born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., Mr. Hatley was a retired sheet metal craftsman. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Harrison United Methodist Church in Pineville, N.C.

Surviving are his wife, Martha Laney Hatley of Heath Springs; two daughters, Cyndi Rabil and Sue Rowe, both of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two stepdaughters, Susan Frey of Gretna, La., and Dee Dee Porter of Lancaster; two stepsons, Donald Nash of Lancaster and David Nash of Salisbury, N.C.; two brothers, John Hatley of Florence and Charles Hatley of Fayetteville, N.C.; three grandsons; and seven stepgrandchildren.

The family will be at the church immediately following the service.

Memorials may be made to Taylors Baptist Church, 2382 Charlotte Highway, Lancaster, SC 29720; or to Heath Springs Baptist Church, 101 S. Main Street, Heath Springs, SC 29058; or to The American Heart Association, PO Box 64, Fort Lawn, SC 29714.

Maccie Hemphill

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Ms. Maccie Watson Hemphill died Friday, July 10, 1998, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Armstrong Funeral Home, 822 Saint John Place, Brooklyn, N.Y. Burial will be in Brooklyn.

Surviving are her daughter, Daisy Mae Hemphill of Brooklyn, N.Y.; her sister, Tillie Mae Givens of Rock Hill; her brother, Thomas Watson of Rock Hill; and her uncle, the Rev. Iday Watson of Fayetteville, N.C.

The body may be viewed 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Elizabeth Johnson

GASTONIA, N.C. - Mrs. Elizabeth Rae "Tootsie" Johnson, 56, of 208 Henderson St. died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Greene Funeral Service Southside Chapel in Gastonia, with the Rev. Carol Brackett officiating. Burial will be at the Flint Hill Church cemetery.

A native of Lancaster County, Mrs. Johnson was a forklift operator at Lance Inc.

Surviving are her son, George Johnson of Fort Mill; three daughters, Teresa Gilbert and Renee Messer, both of Gastonia, and Angie Mckenzie of Gaffney; her mother, Lucy Mae Faile of Stanley, N.C.; two brothers, Russell Faile and Charles Faile, both of Gastonia, N.C.; two sisters, Paulette Black of Stanley, N.C., and Shirley Clark of King's Mountain, N.C.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Service Southside Chapel and at the home of Russell Faile, 2646 Castle Hill Road, Gastonia.

Samuel Martin

HIDDENITE, N.C. - Mr. Samuel Wilson Martin, 85, of 194 Martin Farm Lane died Saturday, July 11, 1998, at Davis Hospital in Statesville, N.C.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at Pisgah United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Beverly Gaska and the Rev. Bill Gerhardt officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Born in Alexander County, N.C., he was a retired brick mason and farmer. He was a lifelong member of Pisgah United Methodist Church and was a member of the Woodman of the World. He was the widower of Mildred Virginia Smith Martin.

Surviving are his son, the Rev. Sammie Lester Martin of Charlotte; two daughters, Carol Pitts Whitley of Chester and Kathy Martin Van Nest of Holly Springs, N.C.; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed 30 minutes before the funeral.

The family will receive friends 7 to 9 tonight at Chapman Funeral Home in Stony Point, N.C., and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Pisgah UMC, 488 Hill Farm Road, Hiddenite, NC 28636.

Margaret Matthews

CLOVER - Miss Margaret Matthews, 71, of 402-D Willow Oaks Circle died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at Gaston Memorial Hospital in Gastonia, N.C.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at Clover AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Eric Franks officiating. Burial will be at Lakeview Memory Gardens in York.

Miss Matthews was a native of Clover.

Surviving are two daughters, Roberta Matthews Nash of Gastonia and Patricia Matthews of Clover; two sisters, Elizabeth Hall of Morganton, N.C., and Bessie L. Whistine of Clover; two brothers, James Matthews of Clover and Johnnie Matthews of Gastonia; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Patricia Matthews, 114 Sunset St., Clover.

Generation Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Miller

COLUMBIA - Mrs. Ruth Miller, 70, of the Dowdy-Gardner Nursing Care Center, formerly of York, died Friday, July 10, 1998, at Dowdy-Gardner Nursing Care Center in Columbia.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Monday at the Thompson Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Terrance Sadler officiating. Burial will be at Galilee Baptist Church Cemetery in York.

Surviving are her son, Robert Miller of Winston-Salem, N.C.; two sisters, Amy Stockton of Jamaica, N.Y., and Rosie Gardin of Gastonia, N.C.; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

The family will be at the home of Wilson Barnette, 209 Washington St., York, and will receive friends 30 minutes prior to the funeral at the chapel.

Thompson Funeral Home of York is in charge.
