Frances G. Tolbert

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Mary Frances Tolbert, 75, of 1404 Oakdale Road died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jerry Devinney officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mrs. Tolbert was a Monroe, N.C., native. She retired from Marion Davis Store as a salesperson and was a member of Oakdale Baptist Church. She was the widow of Grover E. Tolbert.

Surviving are two brothers, Gene Goodwin of Rock Hill and Phil Goodwin of Jonesboro, GA; and her sister, Billie Goodwin of the home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Bass Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Oakdale Baptist Church, 1248 Oakdale Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Clarence Cedarholm

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Clarence Frederick Cedarholm, 73, of Charlotte died Sunday, July 12, 1998, in Winchester, Va.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, N.C.

Mr. Cedarholm was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving on the USS New Mexico in the Pacific. He was a pioneer missionary from 1953 to 1978 in Africa, where he established churches and the first schools in the region and built the Karanda Hospital. He worked 10 years at Ben Lippen High School in Asheville, N.C., and three years at Trinity Christian School in Rock Hill. He was working at Christ Covenant Church, where he was a member.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys Flodeen Cedarholm; two sons, David P. Cedarholm of Litchfield, Conn., and Dr. John C. Cedarholm of Charlotte; two daughters, Lois Schultz of Rock Hill and Ruth Harkins of Dorothy, N.J.; his sister, Doris Boice of Sunrise, Fla.; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McEwen Funeral Service, Pineville Chapel, on Park Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Day School, 800 Fullwood Lane, Matthews, NC 28105; or to Trinity Christian School, 505 University Drive, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Lonnie Chalk Jr.

McCONNELLS - Mr. Lonnie Edward Chalk Jr., 56, of 547 Chester Highway died Monday, July 13, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at Christian Home Baptist Church, with the Rev. Lloyd Reid officiating and the Rev. George Lowry giving the eulogy. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Chalk was retired from the Essex Group of Chester. He was a member of Christian Home Baptist Church and attended Chester County public schools.

Surviving are his wife, Mabel Carter Chalk; three sons, Dan Carter of the home, Bobby Chalk of McConnells, and Maurice Chalk of Chester; three daughters, Lucille Smith and Sarah Carter, both of the home, and Linda Carter of Chester; three brothers, Arthur W. Chalk of Chester, and James Chalk and Wallace Chalk, both of Rock Hill; eight sisters, Lucille Joe, Shirley McClurkin, Gloria McClurkin, Janie McCoy, and Brenda McCleave, all of Rock Hill, Lula Sims of Chester, and Mattie McClurkin and Josie Pressley, both of York; 12 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at King's Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1 p.m. Friday.

Shelton Hefner

LANDO - Mr. Shelton Vonzo Hefner, 55, of Benjamin Street died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Lando Church of God, with the Rev. Jerry Barrineau officiating. Burial will be at Lando Cemetery.

Mr. Hefner retired from Springs Foundry as a molder. He attended Lewisville High School and Lando Church of God.

Surviving are two daughters, Kim Rollings of Lancaster and Stacie Boyer of Winterville, N.C.; his father, Eugene Hefnerof the home; three brothers, Orson Hefner of Lancaster, Buster Hefner of Lockhart, and Pete Hefner of Blackstock; two sisters, Winifred Bennett of Lando and Vanessa Watts of Chester; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Bobby Hawkins Jr.

CHESTER - Bobby Joe Hawkins Jr., infant son of Bobby Joe Hawkins Sr. and BettyjeanElizabeth Hodgin Hawkins, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at Spartanburg Regional Medical Center.

The graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Ronnie Green officiating.

Surviving in addition to his parents are his brother, Richard Hawkins of the home; his paternal grandfather, Mark Hawkins of Chester; his paternal grandmother, Pat Hawkins of Chester; his maternal grandparents, Mike and Glenda Lane of Great Falls; his maternal grandfather, Nathan Hodgin of Chester; his paternal great-grandparents, James and Dorothy Green of Chester; and his maternal great-grandparents, John and Betty Burton of Chester.

Wright's Home for Funerals is in charge.

Sarah Massey

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Sarah Williams Massey, 78, of 758 Carolina Ave. died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev. L.L. Hancock officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Grove Baptist Church cemetery in Chester County.

Mrs. Massey attended the public schools of Chester County. She was a member of First Calvary Church, the Hymn Choir and participated in other church activities.

Surviving are her son, Odell Hope of Rock Hill; her daughter, Claudia Easterling of Washington, D.C.; two brothers, James Williams and Charlie Williams, both of Rock Hill; four sisters, Maggie Williams of Washington, D.C., Evelyn Rosier of New York, and Mary Helen Holley and Alberta Davis, both of Charlotte; 17 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 15 great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 5 to 6 today at Robinson Funeral Home. The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

The family will receive friends at the home.

Johnny McClurkin

Chester- Mr. Johnny James McClurkin Sr., 70, of 881 Elks Drive died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Antioch Baptist Church, with the Rev. Paul F. Long Sr. officiating and the Rev. John Heath assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. McClurkin was a member of Antioch Baptist Church, where he was an ordained deacon, a member of the men's choir, past building fund treasurer and a member of the APB Society No. 25.

Surviving are his wife, Annie M. McClurkin; his daughter, Sarah C. Davis of Chester; four sons, Johnny J. McClurkin Jr., Floyd McClurkin, and Harry McClurkin, all of Chester, and Alan G. McClurkin of Winston, Ga.; three brothers, the Rev. Robert Lee McClurkin, Pearl McClurkin and Barry McClurkin of Chester; three sisters, Viola Gladden, Sally D. Simmons, and Rosa M. Mack of Chester; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home

The body will be placed in the church at 12:30 p.m. Thursday

Betty Polston

MATTHEWS, N.C. - Mrs. Betty W. Polston, 67, of 4701 Forestmont Drive, died Tuesday, July 14, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Thursday at Greene Funeral Home in Rock Hill, with the Revs. Joe Marze and Tony Williams officiating. Burial will be at Laurelwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Polston was a homemaker and member of Center Grove Freewill Baptist Church in Waxhaw, N.C. The Rock Hill native was the widow of Coy E. Robertson and Jonas E. Polston.

Surviving are three daughters, Peggy Nordquist, Brenda Helms and Patricia Pryor, all of Matthews; her son, Timothy Robertson of the home; eight brothers, Jack Williams, Ira Williams, Tommy Williams, Paul Williams, Pete Williams, Toy Williams and L.J. Williams, all of Rock Hill, and W.C. Williams of Anderson; her sister, Mildred Rabb of Marion, N.C.; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Greene Funeral Home and at other times at the home.
