William Grier Jr.

FLAT ROCK, N.C. - The Rev. William Pressly Grier Jr., 81, died Wednesday, July, 22, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Pinecrest ARP Church. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Due West ARP Cemetery in Due West.

The Rev. Grier was a minister in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian synod. He served in churches in Troy, Doraville, Ga., Rock Hill and Mooresville, N.C. He was a native of Clover and attended Clover public schools and graduated from Erskine College and Erskine Seminary.

In 1973, he receive an honorary Doctorate of Divinity Degree from Erskine. He was on the ARP Church Extension Board, the Erskine Board of Trustees, was the Moderator of each Presbytery in which he served and Moderator-elect of the ARP General Synod. He was active in civic affairs and held offices in the Kiwanis and local ministerial associations.

Surviving are his wife, Mary Kerr Grier; his son, William Pressly Grier III of Flat Rock, N.C.; three daughters, Eleanor Logan of Due West, Effie Jordan of Spartanburg, Fran Huffman of Flat Rock; two brothers, Paul L. Grier of Lynchburg, Va., and John M. Grier of Due West; two sisters, Nell Sewall of Newport News, Va., and Rachel Hood of Due West; and six grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bonclarken or Erskine College.

Jackson Funeral Service in Hendersonville, N.C., is in charge.

Roland Hayes

WILSON, N.C. - Mr. Roland "Rex" Hayes, 52, of Wilson died Sunday, July 19, 1998, at Highsmith Rainey Hospital in Fayetteville, N.C.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Roundtree Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jeremiah Davis officiating. Burial will be at Rest Haven Cemetery.

Mr. Hayes attended Wilson County public schools, and was a 1969 graduate of Spakes High School. He was a truck driver for many years for a tobacco processing company. He was employed with Standard Commercial Tobacco Co.

Surviving are five brothers, Donnie Hayes and Elton Hayes, both of Wilson, Bobby Hayes of Capitol Heights, Md., Charles Hayes of Fountain, N.C., and Pfc. Michael Hayes of Germany; six sisters, Janice Johnson of Rock Hill, Bernice Best, Diane Faison, Debbie Hayes, Annette Hayes, and Tammy Batts, all of Wilson.

The family will receive friends from 8:15 to 9:15 p.m. Friday at Hamilton Funeral Chapel and Gardens of Wilson.

King's Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Freddy Penland Sr.

CHESTER - Mr. Freddy Eugene Penland Sr., 52, of 615 Morningside Drive died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Chester County Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Friday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Revs. Phillip Haynes and Kenneth Weaver officiating. Burial will be at Chester Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Penland was retired from Wal-Mart Stores. He attended Buncombe County, N.C., schools.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy K. Penland; three sons, Freddy E. Penland Jr., Carl Farmer and Keith Farmer, all of Chester; his daughter, Karen Farmer of Onalaska, Texas; four brothers, Charles Penland and Jack Searcy, both of Canton, N.C., Johnny Penland of Asheville, N.C., and Bob Searcy of Lake Charles, La.; three sisters, Judy Evans, Edna Ledford and Shirley Brockwell, all of Asheville, N.C.; two grandchildren; and his great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home.

Lula Ramsey

SMYRNA - Mrs. Lula Mae Brown Ramsey, 85, of 4975 Black Highway died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at York Funeral Home, with the Rev. Billy Ramsey officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in York.

Mrs. Ramsey was a retired spinner. She was active in local, state and national politics and worked for many candidates. She was a native of Mecklenburg County, N.C. She was the widow of Amos J. Ramsey.

Surviving are her son, Jack Ramsey of Halfway, Md.; her daughter, Scarlet R. Porter of Naples, Fla.; her sister, Ann Furr of Concord, N.C.; her brother, Winford Brown of Ohio; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at York Funeral Home.

Marvin Robinson

ROCK HILL - The funeral for Mr. Marvin B. "Robbie" Robinson, 67, of 111 Wisteria Lane, who died Monday, July 20, 1998, will be 11 a.m. today at Greene Funeral Home, with the Rev. Larry Williams officiating. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mr. Robinson was a retired salesman for Murray and Jack's Cookie Co. After retirement, he worked with Patterson's Wrecker Service in Fort Mill and with Wieser Security at Rock Hill Printing & Finishing Co. He was an Army veteran and served in the Korean conflict.

Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Crowder Robinson; his son, Lewis J. Patterson of Fort Mill; two daughters, Dale George and Darlene Leopard Guerrero, both of Rock Hill; his mother, Marie Robinson of Lancaster, Wis.; five sisters, Virginia Yanna, Ruby Mosemon and Mary Tremelling, all of Wisconsin, Betty Raush of Texas, and Charlotte Gilbertson of Illinois; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home, as well as at the home of Dale George, 1890 Plyle Road, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Faith Pentecostal Holiness Church, 3483 Homestead Road, Rock Hill, SC 29732.

Albert Sanders

CHESTER - Mr. Albert Sanders, 74, of Wilksburg Community died Wednesday, July 22, 1998, at Brian Center in Gastonia, N.C.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by King's Funeral Home.

Sarah Threatt

FORT LAWN - Mrs. Sarah Irene Smith Threatt, 77, of 5797 Willowbrook St. died Tuesday, July 21, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Fort Lawn Baptist Church, with the Revs. Ted L. Hodges and Paul M. Smith officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Threatt was retired from Springs Industries. She was a member of Fort Lawn Baptist Church, where she was a former youth director, Training Union teacher, Vacation Bible School teacher and Woman's Missionary Union director.

Surviving are her husband, Julius J. Threatt Jr.; two sons, Bobby R. Threatt of Lancaster and Gary Threatt of Catawba; five brothers, Earl Smith, Charles Smith and Jesse Smith Jr., all of Lancaster, the Rev. Paul M. Smith of Columbia and Jack Smith of Flint, Mich.; her sister, Thelma Ayers of Fort Mill; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home.
