Robert Merritt

FORT MILL - Mr. Robert Clarence Merritt, 71, of 8637 Possum Hollow Road died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Indian Land Baptist Church, with Rev. Benny Green officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Merritt was a Fort Mill native.

Surviving are his wife, Lila Jennings Merritt of the home; his daughter, Debbie Dial of Fort Mill; his brother, Edgar Merritt of Fort Mill; two sisters, Lucille Newell and Bessie Trull, both of Fort Mill; and his grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Wolfe Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of his daughter, Debbie Dial, 8647 Possum Hollow Road in Fort Mill.

Memorials may be made to Indian Land Baptist Church, 7583 Charlotte Highway, Fort Mill, SC 29715.

Edgar Underwood Jr.

ROCK HILL - Retired Air Force Brigadier Dr. Edgar Harrison Underwood Jr., 80, of 378 Rolling Ridge Road died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at home.

A memorial service will be 3 p.m. Friday at Ebenezer ARP Church, with the Revs. Boyce Wilson and Jack Basie officiating. Burial will be at Fort Sam Houston Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Underwood was a member of Ebenezer ARP Church. He retired as a brigadier general from the Air Force Medical Corps in 1971. His military decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Army Commendation Medal, The American Defense Service Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with one star, the Korean Service Medal, the Air Force Longevity Service Award Ribbon with five oak leaf clusters, the United Nations Service Medal and the Missileman Badge. He held the aeronautical rating of Chief Flight Surgeon. He was medical director of Springs Industries medical department until his retirement in 1985.

He graduated from Tuscaloosa Senior High School in Tuscaloosa, Ala., in 1933 and received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of Alabama in 1936. He received his doctor of medicine degree from Tulane in 1940 and served his internship at Lloyd Noland Hospital in Fairfield, Ala.

Surviving are his wife, Anne Ward Underwood; four daughters, Claire Blount Underwood of Birmingham, Ala., Mary Patricia "Pat" Underwood Brown of Montgomery, Ala., Jennifer Ann Underwood Ross of Nashville, Tenn., and Katherine Emily Underwood McGuirt of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Cauthen Funeral Home and at other times at the home.

Lucille Winfield

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Lucille "Lucy" Collins Winfield, 78, of 5800 Old Providence Road died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at the Carriage Club of Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sharon Memorial Park, 5400 Monroe Road, with the Rev. Gale Cooper officiating.

Mrs. Winfield was a Rock Hill native. She was a volunteer with Loaves and Fishes and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was a Rock Hill High School graduate. She was the widow of James McKee Winfield Sr.

Surviving are three sons, James M. Winfield of Sparta, N.C., Buckner Winfield of Atlanta and Calvin Winfield of Charlotte; her stepdaughter, Nancy McElvoy of Dayton Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Elosie Payne, Myrtle Hindman and Judy Roberts, all of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

Memorials may be sent to Loaves and Fishes, P.O. Box 11234, Charlotte, NC 28220 or the charity of one's choice.

Johnnie H. Robinson

BALTIMORE - Mr. Johnnie H. Robinson, 60, of 12-B Cochran Ave., formerly of Catawba, died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998.

The funeral will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Zion AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Alan Stewart officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Robinson was retired from the Baltimore Aircoil Co. in Baltimore. He was a native of Chester.

Surviving are his wife, Lena Howze Robinson; his son, John H. Robinson of Edgemoor; five daughters, Sadie R. Douglas, Doretha Robinson, Loretta R. Brice and Estelle Robinson, all of Edgemoor, and Clara Robinson of Richburg; his mother, Clara Ferguson Robinson of Catawba; three brothers, M.J. Robinson of Rock Hill, and Otis Robinson and Roosevelt Robinson, both of Baltimore; two sisters, Mamie Matthews and Clara Davis, both of Catawba; and 15 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of his mother and sister at 5476 Howze Road, Catawba.

Margaret Patton

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Margaret Crosby Patton, 72, of 2548 Aspen Terrace, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998 at her home.

The memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Dr. William C. Pender officiating.

A native of Chester, Mrs. Patton graduated from the Chester School District and received her music degree from Winthrop College.

She was a homemaker, private music instructor and tennis enthusiast. She served in various organizations in Rock Hill including the Junior Welfare League, the Rock Hill Medical Auxiliary, the Perigee Book Club and the Tuesday Afternoon Garden Club.

She was an active member of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church and served on many committees. She was a member of the bell and children's choir programs at the church. She was a charter member of the Memorial Hand Bell Choir.

Surviving are her husband, Dr. Robert W. Patton, Sr.; four daughters, Nan E. Patton, Margaret C. Patton and Lillian P. Watts, all of Rock Hill, and Robin A. Clevenger of Summerville; her son, Dr. Robert W. Patton Jr. of Clearwater, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home at 2548 Aspen Terrace.

Memorials may be made to the music program of Oakland Avenue Presbyterian Church in Rock Hill.

William Robertson

LANCASTER - Mr. William Hugh Robertson, 73, of 1588 Flat Creek Road died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Monday at Hartley Funeral Home Chapel, with the Revs. Ron Avant and Laurence Dennis officiating. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Columbia.

A native of Fairfield County, Mr. Robertson was a retired insurance agent of Piedmont Insurance Company of Marion, a member of Hyde Park Baptist Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Surviving are his wife, Helen Evans Robertson of the home; three daughters, Melissa Robertson Hulon of Irmo, Cathy Robertson Carlton of Charlotte, Bernice Robertson Wright of Waynesville, N.C.; six grandchildren; and three nieces.

The family will receive friends at Hartley Funeral Home from 6 to 7:30 tonight.

Jean Smith

LANCASTER - Mrs. Jean Giliberti Smith, 65, of 308 Elm St., died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center in Rock Hill.

A native of Philadelphia, Mrs. Smith was a homemaker and member of Saint Catherines Catholic Church.

Surviving are her daughter, Jan Switzer of Lancaster; her brother, Francis Giliberti of Philadelphia; two sisters, Marie Myers of Lancaster and Joanne Coyle of Philadelphia; and two grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hartley Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Louella McCollough

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Mrs. Louella Agurs McCollough of 1102 Salem Valley Apartments, formerly of Rock Hill, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at Forsythe Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tabernacle AME Zion Church in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Herbert Crump Jr. officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mrs. McCollough was a 1969 graduate of Emmett Scott High School. She attended Midland Technical College in Columbia. She joined Tabernacle AME Zion Church at an early age. She attended Diggs Holiness Church in Winston-Salem.

Surviving are her husband, Robert B. McCollough Sr.; two sons, Robert B. McCollough Jr. and Christopher McCollough, both of Rock Hill; three daughters, Rosalyn B. McCollough, Catina M. Heath and Cassandra M. Tatel, all of Winston-Salem; her mother, Ella B. Agurs of Rock Hill; her sister, Mary A. Mackey of Rock Hill; three brothers, John N. Agurs Jr. and James Agurs, both of Rock Hill, and Harvey Agurs of Charlotte; and 17 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Jessie McFadden

UNION - Mrs. Jessie Herring McFadden, 79, of 1300 S. Pinkney St., formerly of Fort Lawn, died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at Spartanburg Regional Hospital in Spartanburg.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Fort Lawn Methodist Church, with the Rev. Curtis Wells of officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery in Fort Lawn.

Mrs. McFadden was the widow of Walker Heath McFadden. She was retired from Springs Industries. She was a former member of Fort Lawn Methodist Church, and most recently, a member of Unity Methodist Church in Union.

Surviving are her son, Thomas Lewis McFadden of Charleston; her daughter, Ann Lawing of Union; two sisters, Sudie Parker of Lancaster and Vera Garvin of Charleston; four grandchildren; and her great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Mahaffey Funeral Home in Lancaster.

Memorials may be made to Unity Methodist Church, Hart St. Union, SC 29379, or to Fort Lawn Methodist Church.

Gregory Boyna

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Gregory John Boyna, 62, of Charlotte died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at Renaissance Health and Rehabilitation Center.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at River Hills Community Church, with the Rev. Edward McDevitt officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Mr. Boyna was a member of the Lake Wylie Catholic Church. He was retired from the U.S. Marine Corps and the Cabarrus County School System,

Surviving are two sons, Brad and Brett Boyna, both of Concord, N.C.; two daughters, Nadine Lubejko of Charlotte and Corinne Lorenz of Matthews, N.C.; two sisters, July Nochowicz of Franklin, Tenn., and Peggy Cleary of Lafayette, Ind.; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at McEwen Charlotte Chapel.
