Lillie Morgan

CHESTER - Mrs. Lillie Gray Beckham Morgan, 84, formerly of 1744 Rochester Ave. in Kershaw died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at Chester County Nursing Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Barron Funeral Home, with the Revs. William Smith and Dennis Reid officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery.

Mrs. Morgan was a McDowell County, N.C., native. She was retired from Springs Industries and attended schools in Spartanburg County.

Surviving are her husband, Billy Morgan of Kershaw; her son, Bobby Beckham of Chester; her daughter, Jean Smart of Winnsboro; her stepdaughter, Debbie Payne of Kershaw; her sister, Faye Cauthen of Great Falls; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her great-great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Barron Funeral Home, 113 Wylie St. in Chester, and at other times at 114 Nella St. in Chester.

Samuel Starnes Jr.

YORK - Mr. Samuel "Bug" Starnes Jr., 64, of 521 California Circle died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at White Hill AME Zion Church, with the Rev. W.O. Thompson officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Starnes was a member of White Hill AME Zion Church, where he was leader of the Hymn Choir, and a member of the Trustee Board, the Men's Club and Sunday school. He was retired from Cannon Mill Plant No. 19, where he was a forklift operator. He was an Army veteran and a graduate of Jefferson High School.

Surviving are his wife, Joe Ann Roseborough Starnes; six sons, Kevin Starnes of Boston, Keith Starnes and Kenneth Starnes, both of Morristown, N.J., Michael Jerome Roseborough of the home, Darrell Roseborough of Candler, N.C., and Eric Roseborough of Denver; his daughter, Shontyia Starnes of the home; four brothers, James Starnes, Thomas Starnes, Oliver Martin Starnes and Perry Lewis Starnes, all of Morristown, N.J.; four sisters, Sitrena S. Berry of Rock Hill, Johnnie S. Gray of York, G. Juanita S. Glenn of Chicago, and Rose S. Kelly of Columbia; and seven grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Wright Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends at home.

Donald Payne

KERSHAW - Mr. Donald Eugene Payne, 46, of 4799 Payne Road died Saturday, Aug. 8, 1998, at Springs Memorial Hospital.

The funeral will be 4 p.m. today at Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church, with the Rev. Steve Anglin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mr. Payne was a Lancaster native. He was a member of the Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church, and he worked at Spring Industries.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Catledge Payne; his son, D.J. Payne of Kershaw; his daughter, Alice Hope Payne of Kershaw; his parents, Jesse B. and Mildred Phillips Payne of Kershaw; three brothers, Jeffrey L. "Jeff" Payne of Winnsboro, Howell "Hal" Payne of Kershaw, and Karl A. Payne of Columbia.

Memorial contributions may be made to Haile Gold Mine Baptist Church, 7980 Haile Gold Mine Road, Kershaw, SC 29067.

Cauthen Funeral Home is in charge.

Joshua Philbeck

GASTONIA, N.C. - Joshua Claude Ray Philbeck, 23, of 5309 Lewis Road died Friday, Aug. 7, 1998, at home.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ward Funeral Home in Gastonia, with the Revs. Henry Justice and Claude Campbell officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Belmont, N.C.

Mr. Philbeck was a Gaston County native. He worked as a service technician with Gage Pool and Spa. He was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church.

Surviving are his special companion, Martina McCoid, his mother, Deborah Mitchem Gage and stepfather, George Allen Gage; his son, Cody Webb of Gastonia; his sister, Chantel Philbeck Howell of Gastonia; his maternal grandparents, Dan Mitchem of Gastonia, and Albert and Florence Evans of Rock Hill; his paternal grandparents, Claude Ray and Vernie S. Philbeck of Shelby, N.C., and Charles and Dorothy Gage of Gastonia; and his paternal great-grandmother, Mildred Mixon of Clemson.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Ward Funeral Home, and at other times at the home of Mark and Chantel Howell, 907 Home Trail, Gastonia.

Lucille Winfield

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Lucille "Lucy" Collins Winfield, 78, of 5800 Old Providence Road died Sunday, Aug. 9, 1998, at the Carriage Club of Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Sharon Memorial Park, 5400 Monroe Road, with the Rev. Gale Cooper officiating.

Mrs. Winfield was a Rock Hill native. She was a volunteer with Loaves and Fishes and a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was a Rock Hill High School graduate. She was the widow of James McKee Winfield Sr.

Surviving are three sons, James M. Winfield of Sparta, N.C., Buckner Winfield of Atlanta, and Calvin Winfield of Charlotte; her stepdaughter, Nancy McElvoy of Dayton Beach, Fla.; three sisters, Elosie Payne, Myrtle Hindman and Judy Roberts, all of Rock Hill; and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Loaves and Fishes, P.O. Box 11234, Charlotte, NC 28220, or the charity of one's choice.

Harry & Bryant Co. is in charge.

Norman Allen Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Norman Edmond Allen Sr., 49, of 1815 Baskin Road died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at home.

A memorial service will be 4 p.m. Wednesday at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev Freddie Fields officiating.

Mr. Allen was a stone mason and salesman. A talented artist, he also made reproductions of Native American artifacts and pottery.

Surviving are his wife, Cindy Davis Allen; his son, Norman Edmond Allen Jr. of Rock Hill; four daughters, Angela A. Burgess, Brittany Paige Allen, Kristen LeAnn Allen and Lisa Dawn Speight, all of Rock Hill; his father and stepmother, Norman E. and Kathleen Allen of Rock Hill; his mother, Ann Steedly Allen of Rock Hill; his brother, Guy Andrew Allen of Rock Hill; and five grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight at Bass Funeral home.

Memorial may be made to the Native American Church of God, 1815 Baskin Road, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

Nola Anderson

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Nola Mobley Anderson of 215 Baker St. died Monday, Aug. 10, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at China Grove AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Johnny L. Worthy Jr. officiating and the Revs. William Long, Ronal King, Blanche Jamison and Edward Brown assisting. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

Mrs. Anderson attended York County public schools. She was a member of China Grove AME Zion Church, where she was chair leader, member of the Burial Aid Society, the New Twilight No. 199 Eastern Star, vice president of the Pastor's Aide Society and president of the Senior Choir. She was a client of the York County Council on Aging.

Surviving are two sons, James Mobley and Daniel Lee Mobley, both of Rock Hill; five daughters, Timothy Crome, Gloris McNeal, Carrie Ann Jones, Rita Miller and Karen Morgan, all of Rock Hill; five brothers, Willie James Hemphill of Rock Hill, Larry Hemphill of Fayetteville, N.C., the Rev. W.W. Choate of Fort Mill and the Revs. Stanley Choate and Julius Choate, both of Boston; four sisters, Hazelene Ellis and Ruby Moore, both of Rock Hill, andMary Lucis and Jessie Choate, both of Boston, Mass; 21 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Robinson Funeral Home, and the family will receive friends at home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
