Viola Shelmire

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Viola Hobensack Shelmire, 81, died Sunday, Aug. 2, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

A graveside service will be 10 a.m. Thursday at Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery, with the Rev. Wilson Busick officiating.

Mrs. Shelmire was a member of Fishing Creek Presbyterian Church for more than 20 years.

Surviving are her son, Larry Shelmire of Rock Hill; her daughter, Doris Lucera of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Ethel Talley of West Virginia and Ruth Arthur of Rock Hill; her brother, Charles Hobensack of Pennsylvania; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Larry Shelmire, 2554 Fishing Creek Road.

Bass Funeral Home is in charge.

Marjorie Stroud

ROCK HILL - Mrs. Marjorie Stroud, 70, of 809 McDow Drive died Saturday, Aug. 1, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 1 p.m. today at Grandview Memorial Park.

Mrs. Stroud was a lifelong resident of Rock Hill and worked in information science and data processing.

Surviving are two sons, Dean Cornett and John A. Robinson, both of Rock Hill; her daughter, Robin Runyon of Rock Hill; her mother, Bessie H. Stroud of Rock Hill; her brother, Walter D. Stroud of Chester; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Bass Funeral Home is in charge.

Wardell Archie Sr.

ROCK HILL - Mr. Wardell Archie Sr., 74, of 940 Eighth St. died Tuesday, July 28, 1998.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Rock Grove AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Ralph V. Washington officiating and the Revs. Victor Wilson, Johnny Worthy and John Brown assisting. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Archie attended Chester County public schools and Emmett Scott High School. He was a veteran of World War II and received the following honors: American Theater SV Award Ribbon, EAMET SV Medal, Good Conduct Medal and Victory Medal.

He was a member of Rock Grove AME Zion where he was a member of the WN Prayer Club, Trustee Board, Student Board and chaplain of the Booster Club. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1404 where he was post commander, and the Sterling Lodge No. 344 IBPOEW, where he was Past Exalted Ruler of Council No. 88. He was a Mason and a member of Israel Lodge 140. He was retired from Celanese Corp.

Surviving are four sons, Wardell Archie Jr. and Terry Archie, both of Rock Hill, Larry Archie of Atlanta and Frankie Archie of Tillery, N.C.; his daughter, Phyllis Archie of Rock Hill; two brothers, Johnny Archie of Rock Hill and Sam Macon of York; his sister, Cammie Brown of Rock Hill; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be placed in the church at noon Saturday.

The family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Phyllis Archie, 621 S. Confederate St., Rock Hill.

Hattie Hemphill

CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Hattie Bell Hemphill, 84, of Charlotte died Tuesday, July, 28, 1998, at Avante in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Nazareth Baptist Church in Rock Hill. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Surviving are her husband, Arthur Hemphill Sr. of Philadelphia; her son, Arthur Hemphill Jr. of Rock Hill; her daughter, Annie Bragg of Charlotte; her mother Mary Dewese of Rock Hill; and her grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday at Reeder Memorial Baptist Church in Charlotte.

The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Saturday.

A.L. Jinwright Funeral Service, 4300 Statesville Road in Charlotte, is in charge.

James Lindsay Jr.

CHESTER - Mr. James William Lindsay Jr. of 1924 Ford Road died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at home.

Funeral arrangements will be announced by Barron Funeral Home.

Pickett Morgan

PEACHLAND, N.C. - Mr. Pickett Lane Morgan, 70, of Peachland died Tuesday, July 28, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

A graveside service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Forest Hill Cemetery in Rock Hill, with the Rev. Glenn Self officiating.

Mr. Morgan was a supervisor with Duke Power Co. He was a native of Anson County, N.C.

Surviving are his wife, Phyllis Deese Morgan; his son, Douglas Walker of York; his daughter, Angela W. Mitchell of York; four brothers, Jack Morgan of Charlotte, Tom J. Morgan of Monroe, N.C., Craven Morgan of San Antonio, Texas, and John Morgan of Watkinsville, Ga.; four sisters, Louise M. Richardson of Spencer, N.C., Edna M. Shaeffer of Westminister, Md., Ruth Morgan of Waxhaw, N.C., and Margie M. Jordan of Conway; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Morgan & Son Funeral Home.

Willie Mae Privette

LANCASTER - Mrs. Willie Mae Jordan Privette, 85, of Lancaster, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Conway Nursing Center in Conway.

A graveside service will be 11 a.m. today at Lancaster Memorial Park, with the Rev. Kevin Cooley officiating.

Mrs. Privette was a homemaker and a member of Grace United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Clyde James Privette.

Surviving are her son, Byron Privette of Lancaster; her daughter, Laura Nunnery of Lancaster; her sister, Pearl J. Gardner of Inman; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the home of Byron and Barbara Privette, 910 Sherwood Circle.

Memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist Church, 2217 Airport Road, Lancaster, SC 29720.

Grady Patton

YORK - The Rev. Grady L. Patton, 49, of 321 Sandifer Road died Wednesday, July 29, 1998, at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center in Columbia.

Funeral arrangements be announced by King's Funeral Home.

The Rev. Patton was the pastor of Mount Zion Baptist Church in Blackstock.
