James Jordan

CHARLOTTE - Mr. James Arthur "Bo-Jack" Jordan, 50, of 245 Stone Post Road, formerly of Rock Hill, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Union Baptist Church in Newport, with the Rev. Ronnie Baxter officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Mr. Jordan was retired from the trucking industry. He was a member of Union Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army with the 101st Airborne Division. He served in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969 and was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division in 1970. He was a 1966 graduate of Emmett Scott High School. He was a former member of the Gospel Chorus at Union Baptist Church. He served in the Army Reserve 108th Division. He was a tae kwon do black belt at Kim School of Martial Arts.

Surviving are his wife, Glenda C. Jordan; his daughter, Natasha J. Reid of Charlotte; his stepson, Robert Cherry of Virginia; two brothers, Ulysses Jordan of Charlotte and Charlie Patton of Philadelphia; two sisters, Dorothy L. Jordan of Charlotte and Rosa Kirk of Philadelphia; and his grandchild.

The body may be viewed from 1 to 7 p.m. today and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday at Parker Funeral Home.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight at Parker Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Betty Donovan Box, 942 Rolling Green Road.

Lula Meeks

WASHINGTON - Mrs. Lula Smith Meeks, 91, of Washington died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at Washington Nursing Home.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Monday at United AME Zion Church in Fort Mill, with the Rev. T.R. McBeth officiating and Dr. C.J. Jenkins giving the eulogy. Burial will be at the Mount Zion AME Zion Church cemetery in Hickory Grove.

A native of Hickory Grove, Mrs. Meeks lived for a while in Fort Mill and was a member of the United AME Zion Church.

Surviving are her daughter with whom she lived, Jessie M. Hall; her sister, Leila Mayo of Washington; 13 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; 42 great-great-grandchildren; and 23 great-great-great-grandchildren.

The body may be viewed from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Wright Funeral Home in York.

The body will be placed in the church at 9:30 a.m. Monday.

The family will receive friends at the homes of her granddaughters, Barbara Benjamin, of 120 Boseman Drive in Fort Mill and Ernestine McGee, of 203 Juniper St. in Fort Mill.

Robert Montgomery

CHARLOTTE - Mr. Robert Lester Montgomery, 78, of Charlotte died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at Presbyterian Hospital.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. today at Mulberry Baptist Church, with the Rev Michael Sepaugh officiating. A graveside service will be 3 p.m. today at Unity ARP Church in Lancaster.

A native of Lancaster, Mr. Montgomery worked 31 years as television broadcast technician for WBTV in Charlotte. He served in World War II. He was a deacon at Mulberry Presbyterian Church and most recently was a member of Mulberry Baptist Church. He was the widower of Frances Sepaugh Montgomery.

Surviving are three sons, Ron Montgomery of Charlotte, Tom Montgomery of Davidson, N.C., and Robert Montgomery of Raleigh, N.C.; his daughter, Phyllis Tarrant of Mint Hill, N.C.; three brothers, Henry Montgomery of Great Falls, and Jim Montgomery and Bill Montgomery, both of Lancaster; his sister, Martha Rushing of Lancaster; and seven grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Presbyterian Hospital Foundation Harris Hospice Unit, P.O. 33549, Charlotte, NC 28233 or Mulberry Baptist Church, 6450 Tuckaseegee Road, Charlotte, NC 28214.

Charles Robinson

ROCK HILL - Mr. Charles Edward "Beauty" Robinson of 900 Ogden Road died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Friday at New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church, with the Rev. Sherman B. McBeth Sr. officiating. Burial will be at Barber Memorial Cemetery.

A native of York County, Mr. Robinson was a member of New Mount Olivet AME Zion Church and a 1962 graduate of Emmett Scott High School.

He pursued a career in golf and worked for 30 years for Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, where he was a bag room manager and was instrumental in preparing for golf tournaments. He was a member of Sterling Lodge No. 344 IBPOE of W for 30 years. He was assistant grand esquire at the Grand Lodge and was a past member of the Grand Exalted Ruler Council. He was trustee of the Elks Club and a member of the Mabel L. Green Fez Club and inner guard of past Exalted Ruler Council No. 88. He was chairman of the Memorial Committee and served as exalted ruler for 13 years. He was the second vice president of the South Carolina State Association of Elks. He was a member of the past state president's council. He was master of social session.

Surviving are his wife, Estelle P. Robinson; two sons, Derrick Moise of Charlotte and Christopher Sanders of Rock Hill; two daughters, Mildred P. Logan of Rock Hill and Cassie Robinson of Charlotte; his father, Hayward L. Robinson Sr. of Rock Hill; three brothers, Hayward L. Robinson Jr. and James Floyd Robinson, both of St. Albans, N.Y., and Marion C. Robinson of Bronx, N.Y.; two sisters, Betty R. Brown of Washington, D.C., and Lula Mae Robinson of Rock Hill; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tongiht at Robinson Funeral Home.

The body will be taken to the church at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Robert Rogers

ROCK HILL - Mr. Robert C. Rogers, 22, of 1715 Fieldcrest Circle died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at Piedmont Medical Center.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. Friday at McEwen Funeral Service Mint Hill Chapel. Burial will be at Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Matthews, N.C.

Surviving are his fiance, Michelle Lancaster of Rock Hill; his mother and stepfather, Linda and M.L. Beall of Matthews; his father and stepmother, Robert P. and Inez Rogers of Grafton, W.Va.; his sister, Tammy Abel of Monroe, N.C.; his paternal grandparents, Charles and Mary Rogers of Grafton, W.Va.; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Shreve of Volga, W.Va.; and his maternal great-grandmother, Lois Sims of Tampa, Fla.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McEwen Funeral Service Mint Hill Chapel.

William Scoggins

ROCK HILL - Mr. William Jennings "Jenk" Scoggins, 90, of 1915 Ebenezer Road died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at White Oak Manor.

The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday at Bass Funeral Home, with the Rev. Gene Mullikin officiating. Burial will be at Bethesda Presbyterian Church cemetery.

A native of Rock Hill, Mr. Scoggins was a farmer and member of Antioch United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Pearl Lee Scoggins; his sons, Rembert K. Scoggins of Rock Hill; his brother, R.G. "Glenn" Scoggins of Rock Hill; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at Bass Funeral Home and at other times at the home of Rembert Scoggins, 4839 Rabs Drive, Rock Hill.

Memorials may be made to Antioch United Methodist Church, 1671 Highway 324, Rock Hill, SC 29730.

John Shurley III

RICHMOND, Va. - Col. John Rooker Shurley III, 60, died Monday, Sept. 14, 1998.

The funeral will be 2 p.m. today at Sandston Presbyterian Church. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Col. Shurley retired from the Virginia Air National Guard in 1993. He served on active duty during the 1961 Berlin Crisis and in 1965 in Cam Ranh Bay, Vietnam, where he flew 214 combat missions. He served in several administrative positions, as air technician, flight instructor and chief of training, chief of standardization and evaluation, operations officer and squadron commander. He was mission support squadron commander and was appointed in 1988 as deputy cCommander for support.

He was a member of Sandston Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, a deacon, a Sunday school teacher and superintendent of Sunday school.

Surviving are his wife, Page Martin Shurley; his son, John Garland Shurley; his daughter, Elizabeth S. Shaff; his mother Jacquelyn B. Eure; his stepmother, Susie H. Shurley; his stepsister, Marilyn P. Eanes; and his grandchild.

Memorials may be made to Sandston Presbyterian Church, 13 N. Confederate Ave., Sandston, VA 23150 or Chickahominy Branch YMCA, 5401 Whiteside Road, Sandston, VA 23150; or Bon Secours Hospice, 413 Stuart Circle, Richmond, VA 23220.

Lawrence Wilson

CATAWBA - Mr. Lawrence Jerry Wilson, 57, of 4565 Cecelia Court died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, at home.

The funeral was Wednesday at Cauthen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tommy Huddleston officiating. A graveside service will be 2 p.m. today at Catawba Baptist Church, with the Rev. Tommy Huddleston officiating.

Mr. Wilson was employed at General Tire for 14 years as an instrument mechanic. He was retired from Georgia Pacific after 29 years of service. He was a member of Catawba Baptist Church, served in the Army and was a member of the American Legion.

Surviving are his wife, Cecilia Neely Wilson; his son, Bryan Wilson of Spartanburg; his daughter, Julie Gladden of Catawba; his father, Jesse Lawrence Wilson of Indian Land; three brothers, James Robert Wilson of Indian Land, Norman Holland Wilson of Lancaster and Darwin Jesse Wilson of Spartanburg; his sister, Debra Denise Murphy of Indian Land; and four grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at home.
