Robert ‘Bob’ A. Roe
March 3, 1954 – Nov. 18, 2016
Robert "Bob" A. Roe, 62, of Brookings, died Friday, Nov. 18, 2016, at his home from pancreatic cancer.
Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Rude’s Funeral Home. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Robert Allen Roe was born March 3, 1954, the son of Leonard and Violet (Opdahl) Roe, in Hayti. He grew up in the Hayti area, attending school and graduating in 1972. He attended South Dakota State University, attaining his economics and political science degrees in 1976. In 1977. he married Charlotte Thomas, in Leola, and they had three children.
He worked at First National Bank as the Trust Department head, working there from 1976 until 1984. During his time at First National Bank, he attended National Graduate Trust School at Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill. He then worked for Piper Jaffray from 1984 through 2003 after which he became an independent financial consultant until the present. Bob also served in the South Dakota House of Representatives and held leadership roles from 1989 until 2000.
One of Bob’s greatest passions came in the form of hunting and preserving the natural pheasant habitat through the care and maintenance of his own land. It was important to him to share this passion with family and friends. Bob was an avid Jackrabbit fan and supporter of SDSU. He also enjoyed spending his summers on the golf course and consistently trying to achieve the perfect lawn at home. In some of the most recent years his greatest joys came from spending time with his grandchildren.
Bob is survived by his wife, Charlotte; children, David (Heather) Roe of Brookings, Natalie (Christopher) Ganske of Fargo, N.D., and Michael Roe of Lincoln, Neb.; five grandchildren; a sister, Becky (Loren) Tupper of Bartlesville, Okla.; two sisters-in-law, Becky Roe of Spencer, Iowa, and Karen Roe of Watertown and many nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Gordon and Jerry.
David Cummings
Oct 4, 1946 - Jan 3, 2009
Anchorage resident David Bryant Cummings, 62, died suddenly Jan. 3, 2009, at his mothers home in Castlewood, S.D., while on a pheasant hunting trip and visiting family.
David Bryant Cummings was born October 4, 1946, in Detroit, Michigan to Myrle (LaDue) and Leslie M Cummings. He was baptized at First Methodist Church in Mitchell, South Dakota where he lived for nine years.
David grew up in Castlewood, South Dakota and was confirmed at the First Presbyterian Church. He graduated from Castlewood High School in 1965. He was active in sports activities his entire high school career which included baseball, track & field, basketball and All-State Center in football. He attended Dakota Wesleyan for one year and graduated from Lake Area Vocational Technical School with an Associate’s Degree in tool and die. He enlisted in the United States Army from 1969-1978. After military machinist school in Aberdeen, Maryland he was stationed in West Germany, Colorado, Kansas (Fort Leavenworth), Alaska (Fort Richardson) and volunteered for a tour of duty in Viet Nam. His military honors and awards include the National Defense Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Viet Nam Campaign Medal, the Department of the Army Certificate of Achievement (Senior Machinist), and an Honorable Discharge from the United States Army in 1978.
In Alaska he met and later married Lorayne Embretson in Colorado Springs, Colorado on December 17, 1977. They lived in Iowa for one year and returned to Anchorage, Alaska in 1979 and have resided there since. David graduated from the University of Alaska, Anchorage, with an A.A.S. Degree in Welding Technology with an emphasis Metallurgy and Industrial Radiography. He worked in the oil fields at Prudhoe Bay, Alaska reading x-ray welds from the Alaska Pipeline and retired in 1999. David was a member of Central Lutheran Church in Anchorage, Alaska.
In Alaska he enjoyed camping with his family, halibut and salt-water fishing, lake and ice fishing, moose hunting, and snow machining.
In later years, his hobbies included woodcarving, riding and working on Jeeps and mountain bikes. He enjoyed hunting pheasants and fishing in South Dakota with family and friends. He adored his daughters Ashley and Sara, and enthusiastically attended their many school and extracurricular activities. David was voted Bartlett High School‘s ladies volleyball “Number 1 Fan” in 2005, where his daughter Ashley played volleyball for four years. He enjoyed listening to music with daughter Sara in his Jeep Wrangler, while driving her to school and activities. His favorite listening music was Pink Floyd while Sara enjoys MCR. Dave loved to drive and work on his Jeep, spend time with family, friends, and the family pets, Wiley and Kassy. He enjoyed taking friends and family camping and fishing in his boat for halibut and salmon. Dave’s gift of humor made him many friends and was only matched by his hunting and fishing ability. He will be sadly missed by many.
Survivors include his wife Lorayne Embretson, two daughters Ashley and Sara Cummings, all of Anchorage, Alaska; his Mother, Myrle Cummings, Castlewood, SD; two brothers Gary Cummings (Linda) of Beresford, South Dakota; Ron Cummings (Theresa) of Billings, Montana; and one sister Lesa Dahl (Jeff) all of Castlewood, South Dakota. He is survived by nieces and nephews Andy Cummings, Molly Cummings, Jacob and Jarred Dahl and a host of friends and relatives in Alaska, South Dakota and Iowa including Lorayne’s family Lee and Paula Embretson and family, Craig Embretson of Farmersburg, Iowa and Susan Embretson of Anchorage. David was preceded in death by his Father, Leslie Cummings (2005), and niece Angela Cummings Daniel (2005). Burial was at Castlewood Cemetery with military rites by the Castlewood American Legion on Jan 8, 2009. Pallbearers were Lee and Craig Embretson of Farmersburg, Iowa; Tim Embretson, Minneapolis; Randy Wolter, Clarence Fjeldheim, Chris Schafer and Lee Michael all from South Dakota.
A memorial service was held Jan. 15, 2009 at Central Lutheran Church, Anchorage, Alaska.
Amber Ann Hartmann
June 5, 1936 – April 3, 2017
Amber Ann Hartmann, 80, of Brookings, died Monday, April 3, 2017, at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls.
Amber Ann (Clough) Hartmann was born on June 5, 1936, in Pierre to Ralph Robert Clough and Georgia Amber Rynor.
While she grew up in Chamberlain, Amber also spent a great deal of time with her grandparents at Interior. While she was in grade school, she had been baptized at the local Congregational Church. During her junior and senior years in high school Amber worked at Studebaker-Packard Dealership and helped the owners with their books and helped set up their parts inventory.
She graduated from Chamberlain High School in 1954 and then enrolled at South Dakota State University, where she received an associate’s degree in sociology and secretarial work.
While at SDSU, she was set up on a blind date to meet Alvin Eugene Hartmann. They were married on June 17, 1956, in Chamberlain. About this time Amber became a confirmed member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, of Argo Township near White. They had four sons, Allan, Arvin, Arlan and Andrew. Alvin and Amber began farming north of Brookings in 1956 and did so for about 60 years before recently renting their land to others.
In 1971, Alvin and Amber and their sons joined Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brookings. Alvin died March 8, 2011, after a two-year battle with cancer. Amber continued to live on the farm where she enjoyed her cats and her miniature ponies. She was also proud to have been a West River gal.
In the spring of 2015, Amber’s house on the farm caught fire and burned down. By God’s grace Amber’s life was spared and a short time later Amber moved to Brookings into an apartment. This also permitted her to become a regular participant in a Thursday morning Bible study at Our Savior Lutheran Church.
About a year ago, Amber was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and began palliative chemo treatments which were stopped a couple of months ago.
She is survived by her sons, Allan (Pam) of Cleveland, N.D.; Arvin of Portland, Maine; Arlan (Debbie) of Fresno, Calif., and Andrew (Darla) of Fruit Heights, Utah; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law, Duane and Helen Hartmann of Sioux Falls and Larry and Vanita Hartmann of San Diego, as well as nieces and nephews.
Amber was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin.
Funeral services are at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Our Savior’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brookings. Burial is at 11 a.m. Monday at Riverview Cemetery in Chamberlain. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Francis Marie "Sue" Gross
Feb. 19, 1913 - May 22, 2008
Brookfield, Wis. - Frances Marie "Sue" Gross died peacefully on Sunday, May 22, 2008, at the age of 95 in Brookfield, Wis.
She was born in Kimball, Minn., on Feb. 19, 1913, to Frank E. Smith and Mary Walberg Smith. The family moved to Hecla where Frances attended school.
She studied music and received an elementary teaching certificate from Northern Normal (now Northern State University) in Aberdeen and taught in Brown County schools for several years.
In 1941, Frances married Maurice Gross at Hecla. They owned and operated the drugstore in Langford, for five years, later moving to Britton, where they owned and operated Quarve Drug until Maurice's death in 1965.
Frances married Guilford Gross in 1967 at Brookings, where they made their home. Guilford was a professor of pharmacology at South Dakota State University. Shortly after Guilford's death in 1997, Frances moved to Brookfield to be closer to her son.
She was a lifelong member of the United Methodist Church, serving as choir director and organist at the church in Britton for 25 years.
She was a 50-year member of Britton Chapter No. 65, Order of Eastern Star, Chapter BG, P.E.O. For 30 years, she attended St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brookings. Coming from a family of journalists , Frances was an avid reader and an enthusiastic follower of current events and meteorology.
Frances is survived by her son, Garrett (Carol) Gross of Elm Grove, Wis., professor of pharmacology at the Medical College of Wisconsin; nieces and nephews Janet (Cal) Kirschenmann, Sue (Ron) Olofson, Kathy (Doug) Nelson, Richard (Pamela) Smith, Stephanie (Tom) Zerfas, and Randy (Trudi) Smith; sister-in-law Ruth Smith of Aberdeen; step-children Kathryn Landreth and Michael (Susan) Gross; grandson Christopher (Gulnara) Gross, and great-grandson Nikita Gross.
In addition to her parents and her two husbands, Frances was preceded in death by her brothers, Allan and Howard Smith.
A memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Britton at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 25. The Rev. Kris Mutzenberger will officiate.
Burial of her cremains will take place at the Britton Cemetery, under the direction of the Price Funeral Chapel of Britton.
Memorials may be sent to the American Heart Association or the Britton United Methodist Church.
Christopher Lee Gunderson
May 20, 1979 – Nov. 22, 2016
Watertown - Christopher Lee Gunderson, 37, of Watertown, and formerly of Brookings, died Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2016, at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. Visitation is 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday at Eidsness Funeral Home.
Chris was born May 20, 1979, to Kevin and Pam (Johnson) Gunderson in Lake Preston. He grew up in Brookings, where he was baptized and confirmed at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. Chris lived in Brookings and Sioux Falls, where he worked in construction. He was extremely talented in mechanical areas and enjoyed tinkering, construction, and rebuilding his Harley Davidson Motorcycle.
Throughout Chris’ life, he was always known for his willingness to help out. He was always the first one to come forward if there was a need. Even in his death, Chris gave back by being a donor and saving the lives of others.
Chris enjoyed riding and working on his motorcycle. He will also be remembered for his love of pets, working out at the gym, and his passion for drawing.
Survivors include his mother and step-father, Pam (Mike) Shuck of Shawnee, Kan.; father and step-mother, Kevin (Julie) Gunderson of Volga; siblings, Mike (Shelly) Gunderson of Aurora and Natalie and Andrew Gunderson of Volga; grandparents, Larry and Maxine Johnson of Aurora; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Edgar and Darlene Gunderson.
Beverly Ann Reed
April 17, 1929 – Aug. 13, 2018
Madison - Beverly Ann Reed, 89, of Madison and a former Oldham area resident, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, at Bethel Lutheran Home in Madison.
Beverly Ann Wedell was born April 17, 1929, in Moody County to Alfred and Zenobia (Gullickson) Wedell. She attended grade school at Whaley School, attended high school in Colman and graduated from Egan High School in 1947.
She married Ronald Reed on Oct. 15, 1948, at Trent.
They made their home on a farm west of Oldham where she lived for 69 ˝ years until moving to Madison in February 2018.
She and Ronald farmed together until Ron’s death in 2009.
In her youth she was active in 4-H. Bev was on the Oldham Library Board.
Later in her life she and Ron enjoyed going to polka dances and took a couple of bus trips with the Larry Olson Band. She also enjoyed bird watching, tending her flowers, her cats and watching the Twins, win or lose.
Beverly is survived by her son Wally (Melody) Reed and daughter Elene (Roger) Schrepel both of Madison, six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and special friend Ed Saathoff of Estelline.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ron; a sister, Corrine Back.
Funeral services are at 10:30 am on Thursday at the Oldham Lutheran Church in Oldham with burial in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery rural Oldham. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Wednesday in the church and preceding services.
The Johnson-Henry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
James Dalrymple
Feb 23 1934 - Jan 04 2009
James Dalrymple, son of Clifford and Jennie (Leonard) Dalrymple, was born February 23, 1934, at Estelline, South Dakota.
He attended school in Estelline and then joined the United States Army.
After his discharge he moved to Iowa and did construction work.
He retired in 1990 and returned to Estelline.
Jim died on Sunday, January 4, 2009 at his residence at the age of 74 years.
He is survived by special friends, Beverly Donnelly of Lake Norden, SD, his dog Sam and many friends.
Myrtle Shackelford
Feb. 26, 1915 - June 15, 2008
Flandreau - Myrtle Shackelford, 93, died Sunday, June 15, 2008, at Riverview Manor in Flandreau.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau with the Rev. Richard Fox officiating. Burial is in the Union Cemetery in Flandreau. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Tuesday with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at Skroch Funeral Chapel
Myrtle was born Feb. 26, 1915, in Rosetown, Saskatchewan , Canada, to Edward and Margaret (Miller) Dailey.
Her family moved to the Dailey Homestead southeast of Flandreau, and she attended country school and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1934.
Myrtle attended Sacred Heart School of Nursing in Yankton and graduated in 1938 as a registered nurse. She worked in Kankakee, Ill., and was married to Floyd Snyder in January 1942 in Kankakee. After her husband was killed in January 1945, while serving during WWII, she returned to Flandreau and worked for Dr. Boyd. Myrtle married Fred Shackelford on Dec. 31, 1952, in Dell Rapids. She loved South Dakota. Fred died Sept. 27, 1997. Myrtle was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters, Altar Society, P.E.O., and the American Legion Auxiliary. She loved to play bridge and travel.
She is survived by one son, David (Marshann) Snyder of Fairfax, Va., and one daughter, Peggy (Jerry) Zablocki of Lake Mills, Wis.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands and three brothers, Howard, Warren and William.
