Bernice K. Oltmann
(December 13, 1912 - January 4, 2004)

Bernice K. Oltmann, age 91, of Madison, SD, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare, Madison.

Bernice Katherine Bergerson was born December 13, 1912, at LeMars, Iowa, to William and Louise (Reelfs) Bergerson. She moved to South Dakota as a child and attended school at Orland, SD.

She married Arthur Oltmann on April 12, 1939, at Madison. They farmed near Franklin, SD and she moved to Madison in 1976 when her husband died. She moved into Beverly Healthcare in 1997. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Madison.

PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents, her husband, one son Paul, four sisters and five brothers.

SURVIVORS: one daughter, Nancy (Bernie) Reifers of Madison; two grandchildren, Mark (Lisa) Mathieu and Sally Kranz, two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ellen Jones and Regina Guffy both of Chico, CA.

Lorraine M. Janssen
November 5, 1922 - February 7, 2012

Lorraine M. Janssen, 89, of Brookings, died Tuesday, February 7, 2012, at Brookview Manor in Brookings, SD.

Lorraine M. Janssen was born on November 5, 1922, in Estelline, SD, the daughter of John and Jane (Heitbrink) Veneklasen.

Lorraine received her education in the Cozy Cottage School north of Estelline, SD.

She was united in marriage to Verle S. Janssen on January 17, 1940, in Marshall, MN. After their marriage, they lived in Estelline where Verle was employed. After moving to Brookings, she was employed at SDSU for several years and then at the Brookings Hospital for 30 years. Verle died on July 14, 1994 in Brookings.

She was a member of the Faith Reformed Church, and the Ladies Guild. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with family and friends.

Lorraine is survived by one son Duane (Fannie) Janssen of Volga, SD; one daughter Karen (Clayton) Cook of Brookings, SD; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys "Bernice" Reitzel of Castlewood, SD, Doris "June" Adolph of Flandreau, SD; one brother, Don Veneklasen of Sioux Falls, SD; one brother-in-law, Vance (Wava) Janssen of Sioux Falls, SD; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter Maxine May, two sisters, Florence and Beverly and three brothers, Lee, Bud and Bob.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am Saturday, February 11, 2012 at Faith Reformed Church in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Friday, February 10, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Anna C. Becker
(July 10, 1919 - January 12, 2009)

Anna C. Becker, age 89, of Madison, died Monday, January 12, 2009, at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison.

Anna C. Uthe was born July 10, 1919, at Madison, to Fred and Lena (Hidenshield) Uthe. She was raised in Lake County, and married Helmuth W. Becker on March 10, 1937 at Madison. They farmed and she did cleaning, painting and wallpapering. She also babysat for many children in and around Madison. She retired in 1986. Anna was a member of LeRoy Ladies Club, VFW Auxiliary, United Methodist Church and June Circle.

Anna was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1955; one son, Marvin Becker; one granddaughter, Regina Becker; two brothers George and Adolph Uthe; and two sisters, Mary Barry and Lillian Jensen.

Survivors include one son, Francis "Frank" (Opal) Becker of Madison; one granddaughter, Mary (Darrell) Becker of Madison; five grandsons, Alan (Vickie) Becker of Oklahoma City, OK and Robert, Marc, John and David Becker all of Tucson, AZ; 11 great-grandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; two step-great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Luella (Hans) Mauf of Madison.

Gene Haraldson
November 3, 1941 - February 19, 2012

Gene Richard Haraldson, 70, of Astoria, SD, died Sunday, February 19, 2012 with his family by his side.

Gene Richard Haraldson was born November 3, 1941 to Ole and Clara Haraldson, in Pipestone, MN.

Gene loved spending time with family and friends and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed working on cars, hunting and going fishing with his family members. Gene loved to tell his life stories.

Gene is survived by his wife, Susan Haraldson of Astoria, SD; his children, Dawn (Kent) Holter of Brookings, SD, Doug (Darci) Haraldson of Sioux Falls, SD, Kris Haraldson of Brookings, SD and Joseph Haraldson also of Brookings, SD; two brothers, Jim (Geraldine) Haraldson of Luverne, MN and Vern (Enda) Haraldson of Pipestone, MN; two sisters, Linda Rickard of Grand Island, NE, Marion (Clifford) Rupp of Ruthton, MN, and one sister-in-law Luella Haraldson of Jasper, MN; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and a daughter.

Memorial visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.

Vivian Florence Froehlich
May 21, 1943 - February 8, 2012

Vivian Froehlich, 68, of Brookings, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2012, at Avera Dougherty Hospice House, in Sioux Falls, SD, after a courageous fight with lymphoma.

Vivian Florence Dukart was born May 21, 1943 to Frank and Monica (Sticka) Dukart in Dickinson, North Dakota. She graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1961. She married her high school sweetheart Raymond Froehlich on December 27, 1961. They moved to Brookings, South Dakota in 1963. She took a job as a bookkeeper at Red Owl grocery store. She was later employed at Norwest Bank for a number of years before concluding her career at Aramark Food Service at South Dakota State University.

Vivian loved traveling, gardening, playing cards with friends and trying her luck at casinos. She especially enjoyed going on cruises through the Caribbean and going to Alaska. She took her grandchildren on several trips including Disney World, the Caribbean and Las Vegas.

Vivian was survived by her two daughters, Annette (Kirk) Edison, of Sioux Falls, SD and Sherrilyn Froehlich, of Brookings, SD; one son, David Froehlich, of Brookings, SD; six grandchildren, Madaline, Sarah, Daniel, Krystal, Jacquelin and Samuel; two sisters, LaVerne (Bonnie) Frank, of Billings, MT, Vera (Leonard) Kadrmas, of Billings, MT; four brothers, Albert Dukart, of Dickinson, ND, Clarence (Diane) Dukart, of Tampa, FL, Donald (Linda) Dukart, of Minneapolis, MN, Dennis Dukart, of Dickinson, ND and numerous nieces and nephews.

Vivian was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Raymond on December 5, 2010.

Memorial Services will be 10:30am Saturday, February 11, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm on Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7pm.

Scott G. Lanam
August 29, 1956 - February 27, 2012

Scott G. Lanam, 55, of Volga, passed away Monday, February 27, 2012 at the VA Hospital, in Sioux Falls, after a short and courageous battle with cancer.

Scott G. Lanam was born August 29, 1956 to Gordon and Shirley (Johnson) Lanam in Brookings, SD.

Scott grew up and attended school in Huron and graduated from Huron High School in 1974. He participated and excelled in wrestling and football. Following his graduation, Scott enlisted in the U.S Army and served until he was honorably discharged in 1978. Following his time in the service, Scott enrolled at South Dakota State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s in Science degree in Sociology and getting his teaching and coaching certificates. Scott continued to build on his knowledge and graduated with his Masters in Industrial Management in 2001. On February 17, 1984, Scott was united in marriage to Donna Mattke in Brookings, SD. In 1984 he began his career at Daktronics on the assembly line and with his typical hard work and dedication progressed to the Safety and Facilities Manager, which was his position at the time of his passing. Everyone will agree that his positive contributions to Daktronics and his presence will be greatly missed.

Scott had a great passion for fishing, hunting, golfing and other outdoor activities. He loved spending time with his family and dogs. He also enjoyed cooking for his family and friends.

Scott is survived by his loving wife of 27 years, Donna Lanam, of Volga, SD; one son Shay Lanam, of Brookings, SD, one daughter, Kelsie Lanam, of Brookings SD; his parents, Gordon and Shirley Lanam, of Huron, SD; two sisters, Pam (Chuck) Speidel, of Shakopee, MN and Sandy (Reb) West, of Chamberlain, SD; one brother, Kelly (Darci) Lanam, of Rapid City, SD; one niece Michelle and two nephews Derek and Tyler.

He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Private family services will be held. Visitation will be from 2:00pm to 5:00pm Sunday March 4, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings.

John A. Sondey
October 21, 1940 - March 2, 2012

John A. Sondey, 71, of Brookings, died Friday March 2, 2012 at Avera McKennan Hospital, in Sioux Falls.

John Albert Sondey was born on October 21, 1940 to John B. and Anne Z. Sondey in Passaic, NJ. He was raised in Rutherford, NJ, and graduated from Rutherford High School in 1958. He then went to college and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bucknell University. Following his graduation he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served in Vietnam. Following his discharge, he received an MBA degree from Fairleigh Dickenson University and then a Master's degree in Economics from Arizona State University. In 1989, John received a Ph.D in Economics from Washington State University. He started teaching at the University of Idaho and University of Washington. He then moved to Brookings in 1990, where he joined the faculty of South Dakota State University where he became a Professor of Economics.

John was an avid gardener, he also enjoyed reading and loved the outdoors. He was active at the Pius XII Center, where, in his spare time, he established and maintained the flower border along the sidewalks of the Newman Center on the SDSU Campus. John was elected Director of the Missouri Valley Economics Association and was instrumental in establishing the annual meeting process. He won the McCarty Award for Excellence in Academic Advising from the College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences at SDSU in 2010. His Investment Class set a precedent by donating the profits from investments to the local homeless and women's shelters. He was also member of the Brookings VFW.

John was survived by his sister, Kathy (Charles) Anderson, of Encinitas, CA; two nephews, Bart (Alice) Anderson, of Harrisburg, PA and Joel Anderson, of Midvale, UT and many local friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Thursday, March 8, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 6:00pm to 8:00pm Wednesday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings, with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7:30pm.

Roger Schmidt
July 1, 1945 - March 22, 2012

Roger Schmidt, 66, of Brookings, died Thursday, March 22, 2012 at the United Retirement Center in Brookings.

Roger Schmidt was born July 1, 1945 in Hendricks, MN the son of Fred and Winnie (Davis) Schmidt.

Roger attended school until the 9th grade and then he helped on the family farm. He started working at American Freight as a Truck Driver where he was employed there for 18 years. Roger and Delores also owned and operated DS Pallet for 12 years.

Roger was united in marriage to Delores A. Cashman-Rosa from Rapid City on August 5, 1979. He enjoyed having coffee and visiting with friends. In his free time he enjoyed spending time with family and his grandchildren.

Roger is survived by his wife, Delores of Brookings, SD; two sons, David (Colleen) Rosa of Okinawa, Japan, Carlos (Melanie) Rosa of Brandon, SD; one daughter, Marta (Alvin) Swenson of Brookings, SD; four grandchildren, Brittni, Connor, Kane and Seth; sister-in-law, Pat of LaCrosse, WI; three brothers, Donald (JoAnne) Schmidt of Elkton, SD, Dale (Gloria) Schmidt of Sioux Falls, SD, John Schmidt of Brookings, SD; one sister-in-law, Jean (Joe) Montoya of Rio Rancho, NM; one aunt Helen Davis of Winthrop Harbor, IL and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Shirley and two brothers, James and Stanley.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am, Thursday, March 29, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home.
