Vic Miller
August 18, 1933 - March 23, 2012

Victor "Vic" Miller, 78, of Brookings, died Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD after a courageous battle with ALS. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30am, Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, Monday, March 26, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 7:00pm.

Vic Miller was born on August 18, 1933, in Haynes, ND, the son of Jacob and Margaret (Jochim) Miller. He received his education in Lemmon, SD and enlisted in the United States army in 1955. After his discharge from the military, he worked in road construction at several locations in North and South Dakota. On December 28, 1959, Vic was united in marriage to Vi Roller in Hope, ND. With three children starting school, Vic decided he wanted to be home. He was then employed, as a meat cutter, at Lynn’s Super Value, in Lemmon, SD.

In 1971, Vic and Vi purchased Freymark Clothing in Lemmon, SD, and later named it Miller’s Clothing. They continued to own and operate the store until their retirement in 1991, when they moved to Spearfish, SD. While living in Spearfish, Vic enjoyed delivering cars for several auto dealers and seeing the sights of Spearfish Canyon. After living in Spearfish for 15 years the couple moved to Brookings, SD to be closer to their family.

Vic is survived by his wife, Vi of Brookings and their three children; Pam (Dan) Bell of Brookings, SD, Kevin (Theresa) Miller of Rapid City, SD, Dean (Michele) Miller of Waconia, MN; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother Jake (Rosemary) Miller of Belle Fourche, SD; three sisters-in-law, Delores Miller of Lemmon, SD, Phyllis Miller of Custer, SD, and Florence Miller of Rapid City, SD and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

Karin Marie Eidet
January 24, 1938 - April 2, 2012

Karin M. Eidet, 74, of Lake Preston, died Monday, April 2, 2012 at the Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral services have been set for 10:30am, Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Lake Preston Lutheran Church in Lake Preston, SD. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Friday, April 6, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD. Interment will be held at 2:45pm, Saturday, April 7, 2012 at Walla Lutheran Cemetery in New Effington, SD.

Karin Marie Eggen was born on January 24, 1938 in Stjordal, Norway to Marvin and Herdis (Rakness) Eggen.

With her family she came to Winnipeg, Canada as a young girl and from there they moved to Hammer, SD where she attended the New Effington School. Later she moved to Sisseton, SD where she married Palmer Eidet on February 18, 1956. As husband and wife they lived in several South Dakota cities including an extended time in Volga, SD. Together they raised their two children, Shirley and Richard. Karin worked as a Certified Nurse Assistant at Parkview Nursing Home. The last several years they have resided in Lake Preston, SD.

Karin had a passion for collecting and displaying Norwegian memorabilia throughout her home and especially in her "All Norwegian Room". She loved to talk and tell many humorous stories, whether it was in her native Norwegian, or in English, her second language. Taking shopping trips to Sioux Falls and making lighted floral arrangements were some of her enjoyable pastimes. Karin loved spending time with her family, friends, and taking care of her many pet dogs through the years. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway.

Karin is survived by her husband, Palmer Eidet of Lake Preston SD; one daughter, Shirley Duke of Watertown SD; one son, Richard Eidet of Clear Lake SD; 4 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her mother, father, and 1 infant son.

Nancy Lund
September 24, 1938 - March 14, 2012

Nancy C. Lund, 73, of Burleson, TX, passed away Wednesday, March 14, 2012, in Berleson, TX. Memorial Services will be 11:00am Saturday, March 24, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Nancy Carol Lund was born on September 24, 1938 in Clear Lake, South Dakota, the daughter of Elmer and Edna Lund. Nancy was a wordsmith, who loved to complete crossword puzzles. As an avid fan of games and competition, she enjoyed playing bridge and watching basketball and football.

Nancy is survived by her daughters, Kimeth Helsel and her husband Greg and Karen Allmond, and her husband Wayne. Nancy took great pride in her grandchildren and their spouses, Matthew and Amanda Helsel of Amissville, Virginia, Brittany and Jesse McCarty of Fort Worth, Texas, Spencer and Jessica Helsel of Newport News, Virginia, Miles Stelly of Irving, Texas, Rebecca Helsel of Culpeper, Virginia and her great-grandson, Parker McCarty of Fort Worth, Texas. She is also survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Merton and Karen Lund of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

She was preceded by her parents and sister, Faith Elaine Lund.

Delpha L. Masson
November 8, 1917 - March 15, 2012

Delpha L. Masson, 94, of Brookings, died Thursday, March 15, 2012 at her home in Brookings. Funeral Services will be 11:00am Monday, March 19, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation will be from 2pm to 5pm Sunday at Rude’s Funeral Home.

Delpha Leona Marvin was born in Brookings, SD to Fay and Gladys Marvin. Delpha graduated from Brookings High School and South Dakota State University with Degrees in Sociology and Physical Education. She taught school in Nevada and Iowa.

Delpha was united in marriage to Roy N. Masson on March 8th, 1941, celebrating 72 years on March 8th. Delpha assisted Roy in His Veterinary Clinic and was very active in the community.

She served seven years on the Brookings School Board; she was State Vice President of the American Association of University Women, President of the Hospital Auxiliary and Advisor to the Chi Omega Sorority. Delpha served as Deacon, Trustee and other committees for the First Baptist Church of Brookings.

Delpha enjoyed golfing, bowling, tennis and bridge. She was also an active member of the SDSU Foundation.

Delpha is survived by her husband, Roy of Brookings, SD; grandson, Trappor (Emilee) of Rapid City, SD; great-granddaughter, Rosalee Masson, daughter of Trappor & Emilee and a niece, Annette Johnston Zink of Marion.

Delpha was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Robert and her sister.

Cornelia "Corky" TeKrony
Nov 24, 1930 - Feb 20, 2010

Cornelia “Corky” (VanBeek) TeKrony, daughter of F. Gerrit and Sadie (Hoogeboom) Van Beek, was born November 24, 1930 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. At a young age she moved with her family to Volga, South Dakota. Following her graduation from Volga High School, she worked briefly at Dahl Hardware in Volga After her marriage to Everett TeKrony on June 21, 1951, in Volga, they farmed near Castlewood, South Dakota. Everett died on October 13, 2005 and Corky continued to make the farm her home. She died on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of 79 years.

Corky loved the Lord and sought to serve Him her entire life. She was an active, thankful member of the Bemis Christian Reformed Church until it closed in May of 2004. She was currently a member of Hamlin Reformed Church and attended the monthly Seniors Bible Study. She actively participated in the operation of the family farm her entire life and was the calf feeding expert. She loved spending time with her family and in her free time enjoyed puzzles and puzzle books. During baseball season she was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.

She is survived by her four children and 13 grandchildren, Bob and Brenda Mast of Wyoming, MI, (Sara, Brian and Rachel, Rachel and Nick Negen, Nadine and Dustin Boven), Wayne and Gwen TeKrony of Castlewood, (Jeff and Kim, Angela and Todd Moritz, Amanda, April and Jared Brouwer), Rod and Lois VanDerVliet of Colton, SD, (Ryan and Sarah, Lisa and Jamie Johnson, Lori and Ryan Fods), Lee and Sharon Bleeker of Raymond, MN, (Justin and Jamie), 17 great-grandchildren plus one due in April; her brother, Bob Van Beek and his wife Ardith of Volga; and her in-laws, Laura Mans and her husband Bob and Art Mulder, all of Volga, Henny VanBeek of Holland, MI, Garret TeKrony and his wife Henrietta of Brookings, SD; many nephews and nieces; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Everett, her parents, her brothers, Conrad, Charles and Gerrit VanBeek and her sisters, Wilhelmina Lengkeek and Alice Mulder.

Interment: Bemis Christian Reformed Cemetery, Rural Castlewood, South Dakota

Merwyn L. Hendricks
March 21, 1929 - March 30, 2012

Merwyn L. Hendricks, 83, of Brookings, died Friday, March 30, 2012 at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services have been set for 10:30am, Monday, April 2, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Merwyn L. Hendricks was born on March 21, 1929 in Iroquois, SD, the son of Rudolph and Elva (Schultz) Hendricks.

Merwyn received his education in a rural school in Kingsbury County, SD, and graduated from DeSmet High School in 1947. After receiving his education, he farmed near DeSmet until 1949. He then served in the United States Army from 1948 until 1952.

He was united in marriage to Elsie Duesterback on January 2, 1951 in Badger, SD. After their marriage they lived in Badger, SD, for several years before moving to Blue Earth, MN, where he was employed for seven years at the local lumber yard. They then moved to Brookings, SD, where he was employed at Peavey Lumber Yard which later became Homestead Building Supplies. Elsie died on December 7, 1987 in Brookings. Merwyn continued his employment with Homestead Building Supplies as commodities buyer.

He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings, and served on several of the church boards including the Property and Finance Board. He served as past member of the Badger School Board, was a member and commander of the American Legion Post in Badger for two years, was a Life Member of the Brookings Elks Lodge #1490 and served as Chaplain for three years. He was also a member of the Brookings volunteer Fire Department for 24 years and served as secretary for 17 years. He was also a member and past president of the Sioux Valley #118 Hoo Hoo Club and served as director, a member of the Brookings Board of Appeals, the Golden K Kiwanis and served as SDSU Speech Judge. He served as director of the South Dakota Lumberman’s Association for six years and was elected "Lumberman of the Year" 1994-1995. Merwyn especially enjoyed NASCAR Auto Racing and attended many racing events throughout his life.

He is survived by two sons, Ricky Hendricks and friend Pat of Atkinson, NE, Marty (Robin) Hendricks of Brookings, SD; five grandchildren, Shawn, Trista, Justin, Joshua, Danielle; nine great-grandchildren, Kodi, Kenzie, Kya, Karissa, Ellie, Gavin, Hunter, Justin Jr. and Cheyenne; great-great-grandchildren; Thor and Citabria; three sisters-in-law, Mae Hendricks of Howard, SD, Kay Hendricks of DeSmet, SD, Renae Hendricks of MN and many nieces and nephews.

Merwyn is preceded in death by his parents, wife, one daughter, Debbie and four brothers, Carroll, Fritze, Dale and Dick.

Jean Anne Hoekman
December 1, 1955 - March 31, 2012

Jean Hoekman, 56, of Brookings, SD, formerly of Corsica, SD, passed away March 31, 2012 at residence. Funeral Services have been set for 1:00pm Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Corsica Christian Reformed Church, Corsica, SD, with burial to follow at Graceland Cemetery, Corsica, SD. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Tuesday, April 3, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.

Jean Anne Hoekman was born December 1, 1955, to Julius and Hermina A. (Bordewyk) Hoekman. Jean was a happy child, loved by her family, her relatives and her friends.

Jean spent her early years in her parental home. When Jean was 9, she was enrolled in a Special Education classroom in Armour Public School. She did well in the classroom situation.

When a teenager, Jean made confession of her faith in the Corsica Christian Reformed Church. Jean was most conscientious about being a communicant member of her church.

At the age of 15, Jean was enrolled in Hope Haven School. She spent 5 pleasant years there. The following years, Jean spent time in Sioux Vocational School in Sioux Falls, SD, at Mitchell Adjustment Training School and most recently in Advance, in Brookings, SD, where she had resided until her death.

Jean is survived by her three sisters, Kathy (Bill) Gilles of Weatherford, TX, Mary (Michael) Charles of Brookings, SD and Julie (Russell) McConnell of Summerville, TX; many aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents.

Dorothy L. Wittrock
March 11, 1914 - March 31, 2012

Dorothy L. Wittrock, 98, of Brookings, died Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Green Leaf Assisted Living, in Brookings, SD. Funeral services will be 10:30am Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, with burial to follow at Erwin City Cemetery, in Erwin, SD. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Tuesday, at Rude’s Funeral Home.

Dorothy L. Wittrock was born on March 11, 1914 in Erwin, SD, the daughter of Martin and Cora (Schanck) Johannesen.

Dorothy spent her early years and received her education in Erwin, and was a graduate of Erwin Public School in 1932. She attended Huron College, and General Beadle College. After receiving her education, she taught music at the Erwin School for seven years.

She was united in marriage to Erland Anderson on November 14, 1934, in Erwin. Erland died on June 29, 1972.

Dorothy married Erwin Wittrock on December 21, 1975, in Brookings, SD.

Dorothy was a member of the Aeolian Music Club, President of the Senior Citizens, and was the house mother for Alpha Gama Rho for seven years and also taught piano for many years.

Dorothy is survived by three daughters-in-law, Norita Henneman, of Brookings, SD, Connie Anderson, of Tea, SD and Marg Anderson, of White, SD; thirteen grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce (Charles) Hamilton, of Goshen, CT, Shirley (Melvin) MacRander, of Fremont, NE and Catherine Currier, of Bryant, SD.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her two husbands, Erland and Erwin, her three sons, Raymond, Lyle and Robert and one sister Emaline Kussman.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed towards the Brookings Backpack Project or the Brookings Food Pantry.
