Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Tuesday, May 29, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
LoVern was born January 26, 1931 the son of Paul and Veretta (Tanner) Hruska. He was raised in Lake Andes, graduated from Lake Andes High School, and continued to pursue a career in construction.
LoVern loved being with his family, no matter what the activity. He was an excellent pool player and even played against Minnesota Fats. He liked to play darts and horseshoes as well as going camping and hunting. In the last decade of his life, he solved hundreds of puzzles in his spare time, created beautiful things out of wood, and built a life with his hands for his family to enjoy.
No matter what the complication, LoVern was always able to make it work. He enjoyed tinkering and found happiness through it. Because of his love of tinkering, LoVern found enjoyment from riding six-wheelers, dirt bikes, and other motorized vehicles - some of which he built from scratch with his own two hands.
He was warm, generous to a fault, and comforted those around him with his skills. He savored life, as if it were a new adventure every day. He always made it a point to tell those around him, "The main thing is...don't get excited." LoVern loved being able to spend time and talking to his family. His family was most important to him.
He was married to his life-long love, Lillie Laska on October 20, 1954. He enjoyed spending time with her, and raising seven beautiful children. Later on in life, he found pleasure spending time with his 18 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was a creator. LoVern worked most of his life doing construction and worked for companies such as Sioux Falls Construction, Beckman Construction, and Mills Construction. Many of his most beloved memories were during the years that he helped to resurrect bridges from North Dakota all the way down to Nebraska.
LoVern is survived by his wife, Lillie Hruska of Bruce, SD; his daughters, Pamela Pearson of Castlewood, SD, Donna (Bryan) Crawford of Frederick, SD, Wanda Dooley of Bruce, SD, Teri (Todd) Hutchens of Lake Crystal, MN, Roberta (Tracy) Smith of Good Thunder, MN and his son Rob (Tami) Hruska of Fargo, ND.
LoVern is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Veretta Hruska; his son, Bobby Hruska, his brother, Robert Hruska, and his sister Alberta Griffith and her husband James. We will miss him, and not remember the way in which he died, but instead - the way he chose to live.
