Marlene L. Westby
May 23, 1935 - May 26, 2012
Marlene L. Westby, 77, of Brookings, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Brookview Manor, in Brookings. Memorial Services will be 10:30am Thursday, May 31, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, in Brookings. Visitation will be held prior to the service at the church from 9:30am to the time of service. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
In Lieu of Flowers, donations may be directed towards the South Dakota State University Foundation.
Marlene Lou Ann Westby was born May 23rd, 1935 to Oscar C. and Anne E. Olson at the Brookings hospital on her Father’s birthday. As a child, one of her favorite pastimes was playing teacher in her play house.
She graduated from Brookings High School in 1953 and went on to attend South Dakota State College graduating with a double major in Food & Nutrition and Home Economics Education.
She began working at the Dime Store in high school and then worked as an operator at the telephone office while in college. She also started using her teaching skills by teaching religious education while still in high school – an activity she would continue for 29 years. In 1958, she started teaching Home Economics in Webster. The following year, she moved to Volga and taught for 9 years. She left teaching to become a full-time stay at home mom.
She married the love of her life, Allen E. Westby on December 27th, 1960. Their only child, Todd Allen, was born July 3rd, 1969.
Marlene was very active in the community, belonging to many organizations. She served as Secretary and President of the Women’s Auxiliary to the South Dakota Optometric Association. She was President of her bowling association. She was a life-long member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church and belonged to Catholic Daughters for many years. She was co-chairman of her prayer chain. She was also a member of Brookings Homemakers.
Marlene loved her grandchildren and enjoyed shopping for them. She enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing the piano. She also kept a calendar of birthdays and anniversaries, sending many greeting cards to those she knew and loved.
Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Allen; her son Todd, and his wife Laureen of Omaha, NE; her grandchildren, Megan and Nolan; and several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Oscar and Anne Olson and several half brothers and sisters.

Margaret Mathiesen

Margaret D. Mathiesen was born on October 11, 1919, in Weatherford, Oklahoma, the daughter of Edmond and Hanna May Staggs. She died on Sunday, March 21, 2010 at the White Care Center in White, South Dakota at the age of 90 years.
Margaret was baptized and confirmed on October 17, 1937 at St. John Lutheran in Wolsey, SD. She attended Wheatland grade school. After receiving her education she married Erwin Hall. Following his death she married Glen Mathiesen on June 20, 1961, in Lake Norden, SD.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews, a step-daughter Carol (Bill) Ryan of Auburn, WA; a step-son Carey Mathiesen of Vermillion, SD and many friends at the White Care Center.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30AM, Monday, March 29, 2010, at the White Care Center.
Memorials may be directed to the White Care Center Activity Fund.
Kathryn Gullickson
Dec. 9, 1918 – Jan. 9, 2012
Milbank - Kathryn Gullickson, 93, a former Lake Preston resident, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, St. Williams Care Center in Milbank.
Funeral services are at 3 p.m. today at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington with the Rev. Wanda McNiell officiating. Burial is in the North Preston Lutheran Cemetery at rural Lake Preston. Visitation was Friday in the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington and before services.
Kathryn Elizabeth Gullickson was born on Dec. 9, 1918, to Henry F. and Mary (Seaburg-Horton) Dietz at Tolley, N.D. She joined a brother, John Dietz and two step-brothers, Clarence and Ray Horton. She was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith in North Dakota As a young child, she went to live with foster parents Ole and Mina Twedt of rural Tolley.
She attended rural school when weather permitted until her foster mother became ill and she had to care for her and the household. She married Arnold E. Gullickson on July 1, 1943, in San Luis Obispo, Calif. They had three children, Darrel, Duane and Helen.
In the early ‘50s they moved from ND to Lake Preston then to Sturgis in the mid to late ‘50s, where she did house and motel cleaning and was a school janitor. She was a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of Norway. She was active in her church and was willing to lend a helping hand to whoever needed it. Kathryn’s foster mother taught her to cook, clean, sew, knit and crochet and she used these skills constantly.
Arnold and Kathryn moved back to Lake Preston, in 1975 and lived there until after Arnold’s death. Later Kathryn moved to Brookings, then to Milbank to Rita’s Home Care. She entered St. Williams after breaking her hip.
She is survived by two sons, Darrel (Cheryl) of Rapid City and Duane (Patti) of Billings, Mont., a daughter, Helen Gullickson of St. Paul, Minn., three granddaughters; three grandsons and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, a grandson, Steven Gullickson, granddaughter, Brandi Gullickson and all her siblings.
Loren Dean Bjorklund

Loren Dean Bjorklund was born February 16, 1932 in Watertown, South Dakota to Verner and Amy (Aronson) Bjorklund. He grew up on the family farm and attended country school and graduated from Castlewood High School in 1949. He was Boys Student of the Year in 1948 while attending school in Castlewood. Loren entered the U.S. Army in 1952 during the Korean Conflict. He served with the 393rd Battalion in Germany for 18 months and was honorably discharged in April of 1954.
He met his wife Angie Wolf while she boarded at his parent’s farm as she was the new teacher for the school nearby. They were married on April 22, 1955 in Estelline. They lived on the same farm for over 50 years and he enjoyed farming with his father and in the later years with his son, David. Even when he couldn’t do tractor work, he loved to drive around and look at his fields and cattle.
Loren was a man who could never say “no”. If there was a job to do, he would do it. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the church council for many years and served two years as president of the congregation. He was on the Hamlin County Weed Board for 33 years and served as chairman for 31 of those years. Loren served two years as president of the State Weed and Pest Board and was president of the District 1 Weed Board for 15 years. He was on the Hamlin County Extension Board for four years and served 14 years on the Land O’ Lakes Tri County Voting Unit Board with six of those years as the chairman. He also served 27 years as treasurer of the Estelline Township Board. Loren was also a life member of the Montgomery-Anderson American Legion Post in Estelline. He was a seed dealer for over 20 years, last representing Mustang Seeds. Loren also worked at Stone Bridge Resort selling dance tickets.
He was an avid sports fan, always following the local high school teams as well as the Chicago Cubs, Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings. He was very knowledgeable in all areas of sports and enjoyed answering the sports quiz questions on the radio contests. In February of 2008, he entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center. While there he enjoyed visiting with others and especially enjoyed the current events activities. Loren died on Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center at the age of 77 years, 9 months and 21 days.
Grateful for having shared his life, are his wife Angie of Estelline; their children, David of Estelline, Rose Marie of Houston, TX and Sherry and her husband Shabbir Rizvi of Castlewood; grandchildren, Jamison, Jared, Jordan, Jarvis and Jericka; two brothers, Lyle and his wife Joan and Rodney and his wife Sally; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Loren was preceded in death by his son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Lori, his grandson Jon, his parents and his beloved dog, Elmo.
Interment: Laketon Mission Covenant Cemetery, Rural Arlington, South Dakota
David Richard Nilges
August 30, 1947 - June 1, 2012
David R. Nilges, 64, of Aurora, passed away Friday, June 1, 2012, at White Heath Care Center, in White. Funeral Services will be 10:00am Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Pius XII Newman Center (1321 8th Street) at the SDSU campus in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Monday at Rude’s Funeral Home (105 W. 8th St. S.), in Brookings, with a Liturgical Wake Service starting at 7:00pm.
David Richard Nilges was born on August 30, 1947 in Hendricks, MN the son of Richard and Clara (Tholen) Nilges. He was raised in Ivanhoe, MN and graduated from high school in Ivanhoe. Following his graduation he joined the Navy as a Medic and serviced as a Medic for the Marines and served in the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Sandra Buchholtz on April 27, 1968, just months before serving in Vietnam. Following his discharge from the Navy, he worked for Knutson’s Insulation before starting his career at 3M in 1973 and continued to work there until his retirement in July 2007. Following his retirement he worked part-time at Lowes Hardware in Brookings.
Some of Dave’s greatest joys were scuba diving, fishing and geocaching. He enjoyed spending his summers camping at Lake Shetek, MN. Most of all, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and going to their ballgames, events and special places like the Children’s Museum, the Butterfly House as well as the Zoo. He also enjoyed spending time with his International friends. He was a past member of the Aurora Volunteer Fire Department and a current member of St. Williams Catholic Church and the VFW.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Sandy Nilges, of Aurora, SD; one daughter, Amy (Jim) Selleck, of Brookings, SD; one son, Jeff (Bridget) Nilges, of Sioux Falls, SD; 3 grandchildren, Audre, Torrye and Tayven; family dogs, Justice, Brittany and Haley; one brother, Larry (Vonnie) Nilges, of Marshall, MN; three sisters, Nancy (Nick) Mortland, Arco, MN, Darla (Ed) Prinsen, of Aurora, SD and Diane (Don) Langum, of Brookings, SD and many great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Clara Nilges and mother-in-law Alice Buchholtz.
Kevin W. Warren
Dec. 16, 1949 – Jan. 7, 2012
Brookings - Kevin W. Warren, 62, died Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012 at Brookings hospital.
Funeral services are at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Ellsworth Funeral Home in Madison. Burial is at Graceland Cemetery in Madison. The family will be present for visitation at 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Kevin Wayne Warren was born Dec. 16, 1949, at Madison, to Donald and Dorothy (Finch) Warren. He attended school at Orland and graduated from Madison High School. He married Scarlet Stanford on June 6, 1969. They lived in Madison and Sioux Falls, and moved to Garland, Texas, where he did pest control and carpet cleaning. They returned to South Dakota in 1983. He moved to Brookings in 1996. Kevin played guitar and loved to watch golf, football and NASCAR racing.
Survivors include four sons, Christopher (Melody) of Gillette, Wyo., Jeff of Watertown, Andy of Brookings and Matthew of Sioux Falls; four brothers, Richard (Brenda) of Gretna, Neb., David (Kay) of Detroit Lakes, Minn., Weston (Peg) of Loveland Park, Wis., and Donald (Tricia) of Ethan; six sisters, Karen Kruel of Madison, Kathy (Tom) Fouts of Tahlequah, Okla., Donna (Terry) Zingmark of Madison, Rochelle Berglund of Hudson, Wis., Cynthia (Randy) McFarland of Rockford, Ill., and Mary Warren of Brookings and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Leona Bozied
March 20, 1920 – Jan. 12, 2012
Brookings - Leona A. Bozied, 91, of Brookings, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at Brookview Manor in Brookings.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Monday at Bethel Baptist Church in Brookings. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the Brookings Hospice. Eidsness Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Leona A. (Rasmussen) Bozied was born March 20, 1920, in Brookings County to Gilbert and Matilda (Gustava) Rasmussen. She graduated from Bruce High School.
Leona married Naiem T. Bozied on Oct. 18, 1942, in Brookings. After their wedding, they resided for a short time in Long Beach, Calif., before returning to Bruce, where they operated the Bruce Market. The Bozieds then moved to Sioux Falls, returning to Brookings in 1950. In 1955 they purchased the Conoco Station. In 1956 they moved to Gulfport, Miss., and operated a produce business until 1958, when they moved back to Brookings and repurchased the Conoco Station. They continued to own and operate the Conoco Station until 1980. Naiem died on May 3, 2000.
Leona was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She dedicated her life to serving those she loved and to her Lord Jesus.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her constant prayer was that those she loved would accept Jesus as their savior. She spent untold hours reading Bible stories to her grandchildren and preparing wonderful meals of pot roast, mashed potatoes, and homemade buns, to the delight of her family. The cookie jar was always full, and she always found time to spend with her grandchildren in a game of gin rummy, dot to dot, and other board games.
Survivors include one daughter, Donna (Bob) Burns, of Brookings; two sons: Bob (Kathy) Bozied, of Denver and Tom (Beth) Bozied, of Brookings; 12 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Bradley, of Minneapolis, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, David, and seven brothers.
Dale Gordon Svennes
August 19, 1936 - May 8, 2012
Dale Svennes, of Brookings, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at his residence surrounded by family and prayer since his diagnosis, all six children were with him as angels ushered him into heaven. Funeral services have been set for 11:00am Friday, May 11, 2012 at Brookings Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Dale Gordon Svennes was born August 19, 1936 in Estelline, SD, the son of Leonard Solman and Vera Alnora (Conn) Svennes. Dale grew up on a farm near Toronto with two older sisters and one younger sister. He attended rural school and graduated from Toronto High School in 1954.
After High School, he was a formen on a flax straw crew and continued to assist his father on the farm. He then went to work for Spee-dee Construction in Brookings.
Dale was united in marriage to Joyce Lenning in 1955 and they started their own Construction Company. He loved building and ventured into many areas of industry. Along with being a member of the Association of General Contractors and the National Association of Home Builders, his true passion was being a member and supporter of Full Gospel Businessmen’s Association. He was one of the founders of New Life now Teen Challenge of the Dakotas.
Saturday was his day to take the boys out horseback riding, sometimes loading them up on a truck and going to Minnesota. He enjoyed tractors, machinery and long walks to the park with his grandchildren. Dale always believed strongly in adoption, often commenting that if not for adoption one third of his family would be missing, including two daughters and their families and two of his granddaughters.
Church was always a high priority for Dale and he always looked for opportunities to help someone out that was down on their luck. He was one to pick up the check when dinning out. He loved Jesus with all his heart and was a real example to his family and relatives.
Dale is survived by his wife, Joyce of Brookings, SD; four sons, Jerry (Linae) Svennes of Brookings, SD, Brad (Judy) Svennes of Huron, SD, Gale (Denise) Svennes of Sioux Falls, SD and Jeff (Lesa) Svennes of Valley Springs, SD; two daughters, Natalie (Rob) Jensen of Brookings, SD and Alyssa (Barry) Hill of Indianola, IA; one sister, Bonnie Nielsen of Rapid City, SD; eighteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, one infant brother, Gene; two sisters, Beverly Johnson and Betty Lou Hanna and several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
