Lois Y. Hatton
January 12, 1941 - May 30, 2012
Lois Yvonne Hatton, of Brookings, a loving mother of four, a talented writer and inspirational speaker, a woman who knew and loved the Lord and a friend to all who knew her, died Wednesday, May 30, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. She was 71. Funeral services have been set for 1:00pm, Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be held prior to the funeral service from 11:00am to 1:00pm, Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings.
She was born Lois Dunn on Jan. 12, 1941, in Portsmouth, Va., and graduated class secretary from I.C. Norcum High School in 1959. She earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Hampton Institute, now Hampton University, in 1963.
After graduating college, she accepted a position as a dietician at Sheldon Jackson Junior College in Sitka, Alaska. She moved to Washington, D.C., where she met and married her first husband, Fred Alan Edwards. As a military wife, she moved with her husband to California, Kansas and Denver, where she gave birth to Fred Alan Edwards, Jr. and worked as a school teacher. She served as president of the Colorado Home Economics Teachers Association.
Widowed, she met and married James William Hatton, who adopted her young son Fred, and gave birth to three children, James William Hatton Jr., Angela Yvonne Hatton, and Jamillia Joyce Hatton, and taught piano lessons out of her home in Littleton, Colo., and produced a television show called "The Young Performers."
The family moved to Clear Lake, S.D., where she made many friendships that lasted a lifetime. She continued teaching piano lessons and substitute taught. She became a radio news correspondent for KV91 and a news writer for the Watertown Public Opinion. She won the National Federation of Press Women's top agriculture writer award and later was recognized as a Communicator of Achievement. During these years, she wrote for numerous newspapers and magazines including the Argus Leader, the Rapid City Journal, the Star Tribune, USA Today and the New York Times.
She completed post-graduate work in journalism at South Dakota State University in 1986, and moved to Brookings to work as a writer for the SDSU Office of University Relations. She was a longtime columnist for the Brookings Register, penning the inspirational "Mother's Wit." She is the author of the book "Inspiration For A Lifetime."
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. Earl Dunn and Mrs. Bettie B. Dunn of Portsmouth, Va., and her widowers, Fred Alan Edwards and James William Hatton.
She is survived by a sister, Marlene Vaughn, a brother, Earl L. Dunn, her four children, Fred (Valerie), James, Angela and Joyce, and two grandchildren, Elisha and John.
Nola ‘Tootie’ Molstad
Jan. 11, 1929 – Jan. 9, 2012
Madison - Nola "Tootie" Molstad, 82, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at her home in Madison.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lake Madison Lutheran Church in Rutland with the Rev. Paul Johansen officiating. Burial is in the Lake Madison Cemetery in Rutland. The family will be present for visitation 6 – 8 p.m. today at Ellsworth Funeral Home.
Nola Jean Alme was born Jan. 11, 1929. She was the only child of Oscar and Myrtle (Mathison) Alme, and was the first baby born by caesarean section at Madison Hospital. Tootie graduated from Eastern High School. On a Friday the 13th in May 1949, she married Lyle Molstad. For 56 years, they lived and farmed together near Ramona.
Tootie loved to cook and always had a meal ready for anyone who happened to be at their home at mealtime. She loved taking "lunch to the field" in the afternoons. In 1997, Tootie suffered a near-fatal heart attack. Despite her health problems, she defied medical odds with her quiet determination and cheerful disposition.
She was a lifelong member of Lake Madison Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her daughter, LaRae (Rick) Hildebrandt of Brookings; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Lynette (Dwayne) Molstad-Gorder of Estelline and two sisters-in-law, Vernelle Swanson of Sioux Falls and Delores Meyer of Temecula, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2006 and her son, Jerry, in 1995.
John T. Barrett
June 22, 1935 - May 31, 2012
John T. Barrett, 76, of Minneapolis, died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at his residence in Minneapolis, MN. Visitation will be held from 10:00am to 12:00 noon, Monday, June 4, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, with a luncheon at 11:00am. Burial will be held at St. Mark’s Catholic Cemetery in Elkton following the visitation.
John Thomas Barrett, age 76, died Thursday, May 31, 2012 at his home in Minneapolis following a lengthy illness.
John was born in Hennepin County, Minnesota, on June 22, 1935 the son of Roy Thomas and Mae Ethel (Cunningham) Barrett.
John spent most of his childhood in South Dakota and his adult life in Minneapolis.
As a young adult, he served in the army and was stationed in Germany. After his military service he spent his career as an architectural draftsman at a firm in Minnesota.
Mr. Barrett was an avid reader, enjoyed the accompaniment of his many friends and enjoyed visiting family in upstate New York where he spent many Christmas holidays.
He leaves behind his sister Beverly (Barrett) Callan and brother-in-law Patrick Callan, many nieces and nephews and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his parents Roy Thomas and Mae Ethel Barrett.
Ken Granum
Nov. 29, 1919 - Jan. 12, 2012
Volga - Ken Granum, 92, died Thursday, Jan. 12, 2012, at Dakota Sun Assisted Living in Volga.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church in Volga. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. Monday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga.
Kenneth Verdun Granum was born Nov. 29, 1919, on the family farm in rural Sinai, to Selmer and Belda (Anderson) Granum. He grew up on the farm around Volga, attended rural school, and graduated from Volga High School. Ken farmed with his brother, Glenon, for a few years following graduation.
On Dec.16, 1940, Ken married Fern L. Heath at Orange City, Iowa. Following their marriage the Granums lived in California, where they worked at Boeing Aircraft for several years. While there, Ken went into the Army. He served in Italy, France and Germany during World War II and earned the purple heart and the bronze star.
They returned to South Dakota after his discharge and farmed in the Volga area until 1978, when they moved into the City of Volga. It was then that Ken started a 29 year career with Daktronics at age 60. Fern died in 1984.
Ken was a member of the First Lutheran Church. To quote Ken, "I’d rather be out fishing and thinking about God, than sitting in church thinking about fishing." In 1992 Ken held the state record for yellow perch. He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, trapping, playing cards, going for rides in the country looking for deer and spending time with his family and friends. Although Ken loved all sports, he was a proud supporter of the Sioux Valley Cossacks, Minnesota Twins and Vikings.
Survivors include his five daughters, Nathelle "Sallie"(Vere) Johnson, Jeanine (Fred) Bauman, all of Madison, Shirley (Don) Steever, Patty Granum and her special friend Dean "Red" Gernandt, all of Sioux Falls and Vickie (Garry) Prussman, of Volga; 12 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern; one son, Clayton, who died in 2010; his great-grandson, Jacob; and his brothers and sisters.
Iola Katherine Jefferis
April 10, 1923 - June 5, 2012
Iola K. Jefferis, 89, of Estelline, SD passed away Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at the Estelline Nursing & Care Center, Estelline, SD. Funeral Services have been set for 1:00pm Saturday, June 9, 2012 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Estelline, SD. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Friday, June 8, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
Iola Katherine Rudebusch was born on April 10, 1923 in Bruce, SD the daughter of George and Minnie (Meinders) Rudebusch.
Iola attended rural school near Bruce and was a graduate of the Bruce High School in 1941. She was united in marriage to Marvel Jefferis on November 12, 1942 in Huron, SD. After their marriage they farmed near Estelline, SD until their retirement.
She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Estelline. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, and especially spending time with family and friends. Iola also enjoyed the World Series Baseball games (especially the Twins). The Radio and TV brought the music of Lawrence Welk, Tennessee Ernie Ford, and the Statler Brothers. As hard as she worked raising her family, she never complained. Her husband could always make her laugh and get that twinkle in her eye. Iola was always gentle spirited, kind and caring. She was devoted to her husband, family and God.
Iola is survived by her husband, Marvel Jefferis of Bruce, SD; four sons, Richard (Dinah) Jefferis of Parker, SD, Wayne (Sandy) Jefferis of South Sioux City, NE, Ronald Jefferis of Bruce, SD and Jerry Jefferis of Denver, CO; three daughters, Marilyn (Wayne) Thue of Hayti, SD, Cheryl Jefferis of Sioux Falls, SD and Linda (Roger) Anderson of Rapid City, SD; fourteen grandchildren; twenty four great-grandchildren.
Iola was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Clinton, LeRoy and Melvin and her sister Georgia Perry.

Thomas ‘Tommy’ Stratford Johnson

Newport, Ore. - Thomas "Tommy" Stratford Johnson, 86, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, at his home in Newport, Ore., due to pancreatic cancer.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Atonement Lutheran Church in Newport.
He was born Aug. 26, 1925, in Minneapolis to Thorvald and Lessie (Larson) Johnson.
He graduated from Brookings High School in 1943.
He married Corinne Mary Odegaard (Johnson) on June 18, 1950, in Brookings. Upon completion of high school, he spent three years in the Navy during World War II. After returning he worked as a salesman in a car dealership in Brookings, before moving to Sac City, Iowa. He then became the owner/ operator of a Chevrolet Car Dealership (Tommy Johnson Chevrolet) for 35 years. Upon moving to Newport in 1989, he worked in car sales until his retirement in 2007.
He enjoyed flying airplanes and short weekend trips with family. He held several church offices in Sac City, Iowa.
He is survived by his wife, Corinne Mary (Odegaard) Johnson of Newport; his children, , Robert Thomas (Susan Anne) Johnson of Corvallis, Ore; Peggy Diane (Johnson) Bundt of Des Moines, Iowa; Tami Renae Johnson of Newport, Ore., and Julie Ann (Kloser) Johnson and Charles Kloser of Libertyville, Ill.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a brother, Wayne Johnson of Miami, Fla.

Imogene L. Dahl
(August 11, 1914 - December 17, 2008)
Imogene "Imo" Dahl, age 94, of Madison, died Wed., Dec. 17, 2008 at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison.
Imogene Alfson was born August 11, 1914, at Madison to Ingebrit and Regina (Verlo) Alfson. She grew up on a farm in the Nunda area and graduated from Rutland High School in 1932. On November 28, 1936, she was united in marriage to Ole H. Dahl at Madison. They made their home on the Dahl Homestead south of Nunda, where they farmed until their retirement and moved into Madison. Her husband died in 1987. Imogene moved to Bethel Assisted Living in 2001 and to Bethel Lutheran Home in 2004 where she resided until her death.
Imogene was a member of the Lake Madison Lutheran Church and ladies circles. She taught Sunday School for many years and was a member of the church choir with a lovely soprano voice. She sang solos and duets at many occasions.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; her husband; one daughter Barbara Jane Dahl; three brothers, William, Robert and Olger Alfson; and three sisters Eva Thoreson, Garnet King and Lorraine Alfson.
SURVIVORS: include two daughters, Olive (Tom) Bakke of Sioux Falls and Carol (Dennis) Nordling of Madison; three grandchildren, Todd Bakke of Sioux Falls, Dan Nordling of Madison and Cheryl (Ron) Kappenman of Sioux Falls; seven great-grandchildren, Amy, Thomas and David Bakke; Chloe and Preston Nordling; and Spencer and Kennedy Kappenman; one great-great-grandson Quentin Bakke; one sister, Evelyn Hegdahl of Madison and one brother Claude Alfson of Eureka, CA; three sisters-in-law, Doris Alfson of Brookings, Edna Jean Alfson of Volga and Deloris Alfson of Madison; and many nieces and nephews.

Lola B. Duff
June 12, 1926 - June 9, 2012
Lola B. Duff, 85, of Brookings, passed away Saturday, June 9, 2012, at Brookings Health Systems, in Brookings. Memorial services will be held 11:00am Thursday, June 14, 2012 at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held Thursday at First United Methodist Church from 9:30am until 11:00am.
Lola B. Broadbent was born on June 12, 1926 in Bushnell, SD, the daughter of Charles and Augusta (Turnquist) Broadbent. She attended school in Bushnell and was a graduate of Brookings High School in 1944. At the age of 16, she started working for the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.
She was united in marriage to Dean Duff on March 30, 1949, in White, SD. After their marriage, they farmed in Brookings County. She continued her employment with Northwestern Bell until 1951. Dean and Lola moved into Brookings in 2000. Dean died on April 13, 2006.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, the Emergency Council for Services Food Pantry and the Salvation Army Board. She enjoyed reading, volunteering, cooking and baking and especially spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by one daughter Deb (Merriweather Eidsness) Duff, of Brookings, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers, Ray and Gerald.
In lieu of flowers, donation may be directed toward the Brookings Food Pantry or the First United Methodist Building Fund.
