Rolf N. Hovey, Sr.
Aug. 12, 1921 – April 21, 2010
Estelline - Rolf N. Hovey, Sr., 88, died Wednesday, April 21, 2010, at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in Estelline. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce. Burial and military rites are in the Deer Creek Cemetery near Bruce. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. today at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.
Rolf Nicolay Hovey was born Aug. 12, 1921, at Volga, to Carl J. and Christianne (Jacobson) Hovey. He grew up on the family homestead near Bruce, but lived with his aunt and uncle in Kenyon, Minn., after the death of his father in 1937.
He graduated from high school in Kenyon in 1940. He was inducted into the United States Army on Oct. 9, 1942, at Ft. Snelling, Minn., and served during World War II in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea and the Philippines, including the Battle of Leyte.
He was discharged from the Army on Aug. 28, 1945. After WW II, he joined the Army Reserve and worked at the Ft. Meade Veterans Hospital until he was called to active duty on Oct. 12, 1950. He served in the Korean War until Nov. 23, 1951. During his service, he received several awards, including the Good Conduct Medal and four Bronze Stars.
On Oct. 18, 1952, Rolf married Elsie Sween. After their marriage, they farmed near Hayti. Rolf bought his Uncle Peter Hovey’s homestead in 1955 and farmed until retiring in 1988.
Rolf was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, was on the church council, sang in the choir, and taught Sunday school. He was also a member of the Farmers Union, American Legion and Sons of Norway. He loved music and played the harmonica and accordion. He enjoyed creating welded and origami bird art for friends and relatives.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Elsie Hovey, of Bruce; five children: Janet (David) Johnson of Watertown, Donald (Shelly) Hovey of Overland Park, Kan., Louise (Michael) Zuiderhof of Weeting, England, Mary (Russell) Bjerke of Volga and Rolf (Anne) Hovey, Jr, of Bruce; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and a twin brother, Roger (June) Hovey, of Gary.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister, and a son, James.
Marvin W. Iverson
February 20, 1926 - June 13, 2012
Marvin W. Iverson, 86, of Brookings, SD, went to be with his Lord, on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at Dougherty Hospice House, in Sioux Falls. Funeral Services will be 10:30am Saturday, June 16, 2012 at the Brookings Wesleyan Church, in Brookings. Visitation will be Friday from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home, of Brookings, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Marvin W. Iverson, son of Knudt and Lulu (McMillan) Iverson was born on February 20, 1926 in Carpenter, SD. He grew up and received his education in Doland, graduating in 1945. He joined the Army-Air Force on November 15, 1945, and served during World War II.
After serving in the Air Force Weather Bureau, he returned to work on the family farm and hired out for work. While working, he met and was united in marriage to Mildred A. Lundy on June 20, 1949 at Willow Lake. They moved to Brookings in 1950 where Marvin graduated from South Dakota State University and continued his education through many other venues. He worked at Kjellsens, Robertsons, Sidles, and then became an Automotive Instructor at Brookings High School and the Multidistrict. He taught there until he retired in 1988. Through the years he helped many people with their automotive problems. He was always willing and very able to help.
Marvin enjoyed life and loved his Lord. He was a member of the Brookings Wesleyan Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, raising wood ducks, camping, coffee at Country Kitchen and flying kites with his children and grandchildren. He was a great auto mechanic and handyman, known for his ability to fix anything. His kind heart, gentle spirit and patience were treasured and respected by many. Faithful to his vow, he loved and cherished Mildred for over 62 years.
Grateful for having shared his life are, his wife, Mildred Iverson, of Brookings, SD; his son, Donnell (Natalie) Iverson, of Arlington, SD; daughter Regina (Terry) VanDyke, of Sioux Falls, SD; son Kevin (Holly) Iverson, of Yankton, SD; Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren, Travis (Mikela), Miah and Kenzie Iverson, Kasey Iverson; Darwin (Nicole), Miles VanDyke, Shantrel (Dan De Jong) VanDyke; Kaylee (Calvin) Neill, Justin (Kimberly) Iverson and John Iverson; his brothers, Alvin Iverson, Lealand (Kathy) Iverson, Delmer (Barbara) Iverson, Gerald (Darlene) Iverson; sister, Marvilyn (Doug) Albright; many nieces and nephews; and sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-law, Clinton Fossell, Marlene and Lowell Wheeler, Florene and Stan Foresman.
He was preceded in death by his son, Darwin Terry Iverson, his parents, his brother, Arnold Iverson, his sisters, Joyce Iverson and Alverta (Thomas) Reilly, and his sister-in-law, Bernice Fossell.
We look forward to the day when we will be reunited together in heaven with Jesus.
Karen Faye Hogie
August 30, 1943 - June 19, 2012
Karen Hogie, age 68, of Brookings was united with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 19th. Visitation will be on Friday, June 22nd from 5-7 pm at Rudes Funeral Home in Brookings. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 23rd at 1 pm at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings with a private burial at Bethlehem Cemetery near Astoria.
Karen was born on August 30th, 1943 to Henry and Ella Ommen. She spent her early childhood on a farm by Fulda, MN. The family then moved to a farm on Oak Lake near Hendricks, MN where she attended country school and graduated from Astoria High School in 1961. She then attended Lutheran Deaconess College in Minneapolis, MN where she graduated with her nursing degree in 1964. In September, 1964 she was united in marriage with Eldon (her high school sweetheart). Karen worked as a RN supervisor at the Hendricks Hospital for 35 years while helping Eldon on the family farm between Hendricks and Astoria. Karen and Eldon raised three children, Tony, Steven and Tami. In 1999, Karen and Eldon moved to Brookings and Karen worked as a RN at the Brookings Hospital O.R. for 10 years, until the time of her illness. She was known by everyone in the O.R. as "Grandma Karen".
Karen was diagnosed with bile duct cancer in March of 2010 and lived life to the fullest until the very end. She completed her bucket list and made many wonderful memories for her family to enjoy for years to come. She met each day with determination and faith.
Karen is survived by her husband Eldon of Brookings. Children, Tony (Coleen) and children Brendan and Jared, from Colorado Springs, CO, Steve (Andrea) and children Chantel and Brittney, from Brookings and Anastasia, currently residing in Pierre, Tami (Paul Lorenzen) and children Alano, Angel and Allyson, from Pierre. She also is survived by her very special proxy grandchild, Taylor Neuman. She is survived by 3 brothers; Duane (Illa) Ommen of Walker, MN, Eugene (Sylvia) Ommen of Lindstrom, MN, Gary (Fran) Ommen of Clear Lake, Iowa, sister-in-law Deloris Ommen of Aberdeen, SD and brother-in-law Phil (Darrylin) Hogie of Brookings, SD.
She is proceeded in death by her parents, Henry and Ella, brother Lester, and sister Rosella.
Karen was an active member at Ascension Lutheran Church and enjoyed being involved in First Place Bible study, Dorcas Circle, Quilting group and the WAVE. She was known for her famous homemade waffles!
Karen found great enjoyment in tending to her flowers and garden, going to dances, cooking with her family and grandchildren, singing, writing poetry, quilting, sewing, being an avid Twins fan and always putting her family first.
Memorials may be directed to: McCrory Gardens, Bethlehem Cemetery or SD Urban Indian Health Clinic.
Karen will always be remembered for her love for life, smile, courage, wit, humor, faith, and many talents.

Douglas Kenneth Andersen
May 21, 1956 - June 19, 2012
Douglas Kenneth Andersen, 56, of Brookings, SD passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2012. Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Rude’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. A full obituary will follow.
Kevin ‘Doc’ Blum
July 7, 1956 – Feb. 21, 2012
Brookings - Kevin "Doc" J. Blum, 55, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Flandreau. Burial is at Union Cemetery in Flandreau. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau.
Kevin was born July 7, 1956, in Flandreau to Harold and JoAnn (Johnson) Blum. He grew up at Flandreau and graduated from Flandreau High School in 1974. After graduating from high school he and his father started Blum Fireworks to help fund his college expenses.
The business has continued through the family. Kevin attended SDSU and graduated with a psychology degree in 1978 and then continued schooling until receiving his master’s degree.
Kevin returned to Flandreau and worked at Sunshine Farm Supply for 10 years. He returned to Brookings and worked at Career Learning Center in Brookings for 17 years. He had a knack for computers and started a small business on the side. Kevin was active with the Prairie Repertory Theater in Brookings. He was an avid Minnesota Twins and Vikings fan. He enjoyed photography and reading and was a proud Democrat.
He is survived by his mother, JoAnn Dailey of Flandreau; two brothers, Mike (fiancée, Becky) Blum of Flandreau, Marc (Kari) Blum of Flandreau; four step-siblings, Gail (Jim) Pfeifle of Cokato, Minn., Graydon (Karen) Dailey of Bell Fourche, Teresa (Steve) Kortus of Minneapolis and Erin (Joe) Konkol of Custer; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harold Blum; step-father, Gordon Dailey and step-sister, Jane Dailey.
Ione Leighton
(April 3, 1916 - August 5, 2008)
Ione Leighton, age 92, of Madison, died Tues., August 5, 2008, at her residence.
Ione Alfson was born April 3, 1916, at Nunda, to Elvin and Anna (Ramsey) Alfson. She was the second oldest in the family. She attended rural schools in the area, was confirmed at Lake Madison Lutheran Church and graduated from Rutland High School. Ione married Leonard Leighton on May 24, 1934, at Lake Madison Lutheran Church. He died November 17, 1991. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 60 years. Ione loved being a farm wife and gardening.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; her husband; four brothers -- Kenneth, Olin, Marston and Virgil Alfson; and one sister -- Leona Beck.
SURVIVORS: two sons -- Dick (Shirlee) Leighton of Madison and Carrol (Julia) Leighton of Burnsville, MN; seven grandchildren -- Mary (Kevin) Ryan of Sioux Falls, Marcia (David) Goehring of Rapid City, Scott Leighton of Madison, Brian (Debbie) Leighton of Madison, Pam (Troy) Robinson of Pennock, MN, Jon Leighton of Maple Grove, MN and Darrell (Hope) Leighton of Farmington, MN; 12 great-grandchildren -- Katherine Goehring; Josh Ryan; Skyler, Spencer and Ramsey Leighton; Trevor, Nicole and Jacob Robinson; Scott and Ryan Leighton; Jordon and Madison Leighton; one sister -- Esther Gonyo of Madison; three sisters-in-law -- Geneva Alfson of Winfred, Shirley Leighton and Lorraine Gimmestad both of Washington State; one brother-in-law -- Bob Beck of Winfred; and many nieces and nephews.

Richard Olaf Hegg
October 23, 1943 - April 1, 2013
Richard Olaf Hegg, 69, of Arlington, VA, and formerly of Brookings, SD, passed away April 1, 2013. Funeral Services have been set for 10:30 am Saturday, April 6 at First Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service beginning at 9:30am on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Dick was born October 23, 1943, in Volga, SD, the son of Johan and Clara (Lunden) Hegg. He was raised on the family farm near Bruce, SD.
He graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Agricultural Engineering. He went on to earn his Masters from the University of Missouri and then received his PhD from the University of Minnesota.
He began his career as an Agricultural Engineer for the USDA-ARS in St. Paul, MN. He then moved into academia and spent 23 years at Clemson University where he taught and did research until he was selected to head the Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department. After retirement from Clemson University in 1998, Richard was selected to become National Program Leader for Agricultural Engineering for the US Department of Agriculture-CSRS in Washington, DC. In 2002, he was honored as an Embassy Science Fellow at the American Embassy in Athens, Greece.
Dick was internationally recognized in his field. He was elected to the Russian National Academy of Agricultural Scientists in 1993. He was awarded the highest recognition of 'Fellow' in both the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineering and the International Agricultural Engineering Organization. He was selected as the 2010 Distinguished Engineering Alumni from South Dakota State University.
He was an avid cyclist and greatly enjoyed traveling the world. Richard and Betsy visited 27 different countries during their marriage.
He is survived by his wife, Betsy Hegg of Arlington, VA; his children, Rick Hegg of Arlington, VA, and Shannon Hegg of Mountain View, CA; two grandchildren, Yates and Parrish Hegg of Arlington, VA; his brother, Jim Hegg of Bruce, SD; his sister, JoAnn Weiland of St. Cloud, MN; and his mother Clara Hegg of Brookings, SD.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial funds be directed to the following organizations:
