Derald L. Bauman
September 18, 1932 - March 30, 2013

Derald Bauman, 80, of Brookings, died on Saturday, March 30, 2013 at Brookview Manor in Brookings, SD. Memorial services will be held Friday, April 5, 2013 at 1:00pm at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Derald Leroy Bauman was born on September, 18, 1932 in Brookings, SD, the son of Fred and Jennett (Hillerud) Bauman. He received his education in the Brookings Schools. He served in the United States Marines Corp from 1951 to 1954 during the Korean War.

Derald was united in marriage to Lila Borstad on November 6, 1954 in Pipestone, MN. They lived in Brookings until 1957 when they moved to Fresno, CA where he worked for the Santa Fe Railroad. After moving back to Brookings he was employed in construction until 1959. Then he was employed by the city of Brookings in the Utilities Department where he worked for 35 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of the First Lutheran Church of Brookings where he served as an usher, communion assistant and camera operator. He was a member of the American Legion and a life member of the VFW. He especially enjoyed woodworking and remodeling.

Derald is survived by his wife, Lila of Brookings, SD; three daughters, Sheryl Bauman of Brookings, SD, Kathryn (Marlan) Redlin of Watertown, SD, Julie (Jeff) Wollschlager of Madison, MN; one son, Chris (Myrna) Bauman of Sioux Falls, SD; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Fred (Jeanine) Bauman of Madison, SD and two sisters, Dorothy Rice of Brookings, SD and Joyce Cleveland of Madison, SD.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to First Lutheran Church in Brookings.

Ronald Dean Kasdorf
May 4, 1959 - May 20, 2013

Ronald Kasdorf, 54, of Bruce, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2013 at his residence in Bruce, SD. Funeral services have been set for 2:00pm Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Grace Free Lutheran Church in Bruce, SD. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, May 22, 2013 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Ronald Kasdorf was born on May 4, 1959, the son of Floyd and Cora (Meisenhiemer) Kasdorf.

He lived on the farm with his family west of Bruce for 17 years, before moving to Estelline for two years, then moved to Bruce in 1975. He was employed by the city of Bruce, where he did various jobs. Ron then worked construction jobs, including a Bridge Crew and also for SDSU Custodial Services. Ron was employed last at Coast to Coast Warehouse before becoming ill with kidney, diabetic and heart issues.

Ron enjoyed kayaking, biking, pool, cars, gardening, SDSU Basketball, Minnesota Vikings football and the Minnesota Twins Baseball teams.

Ron is survived by his daughter, Renae Hartsook of Sioux Falls, SD; parents, Floyd and Cora Kasdorf of Bruce, SD; two brothers, Robert (Sharon) Kasdorf of Brookings, SD, Brad (Michelle) Kasdorf of Egan, SD; three sisters, Sharon Kasdorf of Bruce, SD, Susan (Roy) Palmer of Volga, SD, Shirley (John) Hedeen of Harrisburg, SD; 4 grandchildren, 5 nephews, 2 nieces, 3 great-nephews and 2 great-nieces.

He is preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents and numerous aunts and uncles.

Dale Wiesner
July 11, 1937 – Jan. 13. 2012

Almond, Minn. - Dale E. Wiesner, 74, died Friday, Jan. 13, 2012.

Visitation is Friday from 10 a.m. to noon at Rude’s Funeral Home. Burial is at Lakeview Cemetery in Clear Lake at 12:45 p.m. Friday.

Dale was born on July 11, 1937, the son of Charles and Edna (Strassburg) Wiesner. Dale married the late Ardys (Wilaby) Wiesner on April 9, 1960.

Dale is survived by three sons Steven (Delores) Wiesner of Ardmore, Okla., Timothy (Karen) Wiesner of Black River Falls, Wis., and Michael (Jane) Wiesner of Almond, Wis.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife Ardys Wiesner; two brothers Wallace, and Howard Wiesner; and in-laws Frank and Gladys Wilaby.

Richard W. Mallett
May 21, 1944 - March 31, 2013

Rich Mallett passed away on March 31, 2013 surrounded by his family after a courageous battle with cancer. Memorial services will be at 10:00 am Saturday, April 6, 2013 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home with a 6:30 pm prayer service.

Rich was born on May 21, 1944 to Harold and Julianna (Schuring) Mallett in Bristol, SD. He grew up in Andover and Chelsea, SD. He met Mary Ellen Stewart while in high school and they were united in marriage on September 3, 1965. Through their married life they lived in Cresbard, Warner, Aberdeen, Mina Lake and finally in Volga, SD. Rich attended one year of college in Aberdeen. Rich worked at the Farmers Union in Warner, SD. He then worked at Control Data in Aberdeen for 17 years. Up until he became ill he worked as an implementation team member for ISA and DXP.

Rich was instrumental in developing the first indoor hockey rink in Aberdeen. For seventeen years he volunteered countless hours to the success of the program. He was very proud of being on the committee for hosting the first National Invitational Hockey tournament in Aberdeen. While being proud of the program he was most proud of his boys in all the years with countless hours of video tapes. His favorite pastimes were "putzin" in his garage, hunting with his boys, fishing with his daughter and sitting on the back patio with his loving wife, Mary of 47 years, admiring his perfectly "manicured" yard.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Mary, children Mike (Julie) Mallett, Mark and special friend, Lisa, Michelle (Jeff) Thue, four grandchildren, Alycia (John), Blake, Sidney and Jack, one great-granddaughter, Addisyn and his beloved cat, BW.

The family he will be joining in heaven are his parents, Harold and Julianna, brother, Robert and infant sister, Ione.

Frances C. Larson
February 16, 1926 - June 14, 2013

Frances C. Larson, 87, died on Friday, June 14, 2013 at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD. Burial will be held at the Elkton Cemetery at 9:30am with a memorial service to follow at 11:00am Saturday, June 22, 2013 at the United Church of Christ in Brookings.

Frances C. Miller was born on February 16, 1926 in Arco, Minnesota, the daughter of Carl and Gertie (Olson) Miller.

Frances received her education in rural schools near Marshall, MN, Elkton, SD and Brookings, SD. She married Harvey O. Larson on July 1, 1943 in Elkton, SD and together they farmed near Elkton until 1975. After retiring from farming, Harvey and Frances moved into Elkton. In 1986, they moved to Brookings, SD.

Frances wallpapered, painted and performed housework for various families for over 35 years. She loved quilting, cooking and always had fresh cookies for anyone who stopped by to visit. She especially loved spending time with family and friends, her women’s club activities and dancing. Frances also belonged to the United Church of Christ in Brookings and donated much of her time helping the church and its members.

Frances is survived by three daughters, Judy (Dan) Carpenter of Le Mars, IA, Lois (Ray) Wacha of Wahpeton, ND, Wanda (Gene) Risch of South Haven, MN; two sons, Marlow (Linda) Larson of Victorville, CA, David Larson of Flandreau, SD; one sister, Carol of Tacoma, WA; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harvey, sister, Geraldine, brother, Omer and daughter-in-law, Lynn.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the United Church of Christ of Brookings, SD.

Lloyd Everson
Nov. 27, 1926 – Feb. 20, 2012

Lloyd Everson, "Mr. Wal-Mart People Greeter, " 85, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, at the United Retirement Center after a brief illness.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Volga. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Brookings Habitat for Humanity or Sons of Norway.

Lloyd Arthur Everson was born Nov. 27, 1926, to Isaac and Ina (Linden) Everson at Volga. Lloyd had spinal meningitis when he was 3 years old, which affected his stature over the years, but never his spirit. He was raised on a farm seven miles south of Volga and attended District 67 School through the eighth grade. He walked to school every day. After school, Lloyd worked on the farm and milked cows. In 1972/73, at the age of 47 he obtained his GED.

In 1989 he sold the family farm and moved into Sinai and continued to work for area farmers. He then worked at the wastewater treatment plant in Brookings and attended SDSU at night. He had just completed 96 credits when he had a stroke in November 1991 and was unable to graduate. He started working at KFC on July 25, 1991, and Walmart on March 29, 1995. He had worked both jobs until he was forced to quit in November 2011, after he had fallen at church.

Lloyd believed in doing God’s work and was involved with the Peace Corps, which allowed him to go to Guatemala. He fell in love with the people, learned a whole new language and made six more trips there.

He also sponsored a family, Ana and Pedro Lopez de Mateo and their young son, Lwin. He paid for her education at SDSU and they lived with him while in South Dakota. Lloyd was able to go to Guatemala with them and meet their families. He truly thought the best of everyone and would always give a hand up to anyone.

He was thrilled and humbled when he helped with Habitat for Humanity and was able to work side by side with Jimmy Carter in 1994 as they built homes in Eagle Butte. He also helped with the first Habitat home in Brookings in 1996 and several after that.

Lloyd was very proud to be a member of Sons of Norway Brookings Lodge and wished he could eat lutefisk every day. He was involved in Sinai Lutheran Church and ushered for many years before moving to Brookings in 1992. He recently became a member of First Lutheran Church of Volga where he had also been an usher. His faith was very strong and when he could no longer drive, he would pay to take the BATA bus back and forth to Volga to go to church. He loved being a "People Greeter" at Wal-Mart, especially handing out stickers to the kids. Everyone called him Grandpa Lloyd.

He is survived by his "adopted" families, Keri (Joe) Skroch, Bayli, Donley and Coy of Aurora and Connie McFarland of Brookings, Staci and Regan Conley of Florence, Ky., and Billie Jo McFarland of Brookings, and Ana (Pedro) Lopez-deMateo, Lwin and Xanun of Cambridge, Mass., and several cousins and special friends.

Hazel Virginia Bortnem
July 4, 1921 - May 23, 2013

Hazel V. Bortnem, 91, of Brookings, SD, passed away, Thursday, May 23, 2013 at Brookview Manor, Brookings, SD. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Wednesday, May 29, 2013 at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, in rural Volga. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm Tuesday, at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Hazel Virginia McCord was born July 4, 1921 in Brookings, SD the daughter of Harley and Catherine (Steinmetz) McCord.

Hazel spent her early years and received her education in Brookings schools and was a graduate of the Brookings High School in 1939. She was united in marriage to Glenn D. Bortnem on March 19, 1941, at Salem Lutheran Church in Glendale, CA. They lived in California for several years until Glenn entered the Armed Forces. Upon his return they moved back to Brookings and farmed south of Brookings. Hazel was employed for over twenty years at the Serv-Well Grocery Store in Brookings, which was owned by her brother Vernon "Flap" McCord. She also worked at Shirley Drug and was a senior companion for several years.

Glenn passed away on December 11, 1993 in Sioux Falls, SD.

She was a member of the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, Women of the ELCA, the Do and Learn Club and the Sarah Circle. She played on one of the first all women softball teams in Brookings and she especially enjoyed going to antique sales, bowling, flower gardening and was a longtime Twins Fan.

Hazel is survived by one daughter, Barbara Bortnem of Volga, SD; one niece, who was raised by Glenn and Hazel as their daughter, Sandy McCord Fridley (Greg) of Placerville, CA; five grandchildren, Malena Bortnem, of Volga, SD, Travis Bortnem, of Sioux Falls, SD, Shane (Michelle) Bortnem, of Blue Jay, CA, Stephanie Blakley, of Corbin KY and Dorothy Aguilar, of Mesa, AZ; seven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Irene Barrett, of Oakland, CA and Berneil McCord of Saratoga, WY.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, Wayne and Steven, four brothers, Calvin, Vernon "Flap", Harley Jr. "Mac" and Dale, and two sisters, Hester and Beulah.

Lola Annette Norris
Aug. 12, 1928 - April 21, 2012

Chugiak, Alaska - Lola A. Norris, 83, died April 21, 2012, after a seven-year battle with cancer. Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brookings Christian Church at 424 Eighth St.

Lola Annette Ely, was born to Sherman and Lela (Smith) Ely on Aug. 12, 1928 in St. Peter, Minn. She graduated from Cleveland, Minn. High School and attended three years of Minnesota Bible College.

She married Vernon R. Norris on June 17, 1950. They had three children.

Lola was a minister's wife and served alongside her husband in churches in Wisconsin. Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.

On July 21, 1981, her husband died. After working at the South Dakota State University library for 25 years, she moved to Eagle River, Alaska, to be near her family. In her retirement, she enjoyed working several hours a day at the Gruening Middle School lunch program, and volunteered at the Chugiak Senior Center.

She is survived by her three children, Brad (Berneita) Norris of Eagle River Alaska, Beverly (Phil) Fisk of Eagle River and Beth Noris of Rota Naval Base, Spain; three siblings, Mildred (Ken) Grice, Harry (Alice) Ely, and Mavis (Roger) O'Malley ; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren .

She was preceded in death by three siblings, Marion Nyberg, Clinton Ely and Willis Ely and a grandson.

Memorials are being directed to the Vernon Norris Scholarship Fund that helps Bible college students enter the ministry. Memorials may be sent to the Brookings Christian Church, 424 Eighth St., Brookings, 57006.
