Martin Leo Luze
Jan. 12, 1923 - April 28, 2012
Elkton - Martin Leo Luze, 89, died Saturday, April 28, 2012, at Brookview Manor in Brookings. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Burial is in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Elkton. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Tuesday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service.
Martin Leo Luze was born Jan. 12, 1923, to Louis and Mary (Mueller) Luze in Alton Township in Brookings. He was the youngest of five children. Martin was baptized at St. Williams Catholic Church in Aurora. He attended rural schools in the Elkton area and after graduation, he traveled and worked on ranches out west and also in the state of Washington. Later, he returned home to South Dakota, and farmed for many years.
Martin married Neva Keenan of Flandreau on June 19, 1943, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Elkton. He was a long time member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Elkton, served on the St. Mary's school board and was a current member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Swede had a great sense of humor and enjoyed hunting, fishing with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, riding and training horses, playing cards and enjoying life.
He is survived by his wife Neva; seven sons, Sylvester (Jan) of Bettendorf, Iowa, Philip (Barbara) of Brookings, Raymond (Valerie) of Egan, Greg (Anna Beth) of Nashville, Tenn., Daniel (Gail) of White, Thomas (Cheryl) of Egan, Charles (Jeanette) of Luverne, Minn.; a daughter, Susan (Myron) Lang of Washington, Ill.; a son-in-law Charles (Jackie) Richter of Colman; 34 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren .
He was preceded in death by a daughter Bernadette Ann Richter; two brothers, Vernon and Joe Luze, three sisters, Myra Peterson, Madeline Perkovich and Irene Luze and a granddaughter Christine Richter Guetzlaff.
Peggy E. Sundet
January 4, 1946 - January 8, 2015
Peggy Elaine Sundet, 69, of Canistota, SD, died on January 8, 2015 at the Good Samaritan Society-Canistota.
Peggy Elaine Sundet was born on January 4, 1946 in DeSmet, SD the daughter of Ernest and Bertha (Davis) Sundet. She attended school in Lake Preston and graduated. After graduation she lived in Brookings and Watertown.
Peggy worked in various aspects of housekeeping throughout her life.
Peggy is survived by her sister, April (Elmer) Rauscher, of Pierre, SD, and brother, Bud (Cheryl) Sundet, of Park Rapids, MN, along with many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Gary and David.
No services will be held. Peggy’s cremains were interred at Mount Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD.
Darold E. Hatch
April 3, 1938 - April 26, 2012
Madison - Darold E. Hatch, 74, died Thursday, April 26, 2012, at his residence in Madison. Graveside services with military honors by Madison American Legion and VFW are at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Graceland Cemetery in Madison. There will be no visitation. Darold E. Hatch was born April 3, 1938, at Madison, to William and Ethel (Demick) Hatch. He attended school at Madison, and served in the U.S. Air Force from 1956 to 1960. He was later a member of the South Dakota National Guard. Darold worked for Wenk's Produce in Madison, Wrap It in Howard and PPD in Madison. He was a member of the American Legion.
Survivors include a sister, JoAnn (Dean) Starks of Madison and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant brother; an infant sister; and one sister, Jean Burgraff.
Esther P. Hegdahl
(February 12, 1920 - January 23, 2009)
Esther P. Hegdahl, age 88, of Madison, died Friday, January 23, 2009 at Madison Community Hospital.
Esther Pearl Jansen was born February 12, 1920, at Titonka, Iowa, to Jerry and Alice (Beason) Jansen. She was raised in Wells, MN, and graduated from Wells High School. She married Manville Hegdahl on April 15, 1939, at Spirit Lake, Iowa. They moved to a farm near Madison, in 1941 where they farmed until 1987. Their farm was designated as a South Dakota Century Farm. They moved into Madison, in 1996 and her husband died in 2000.
Esther was a member of Lake Madison Lutheran Church and Women of Life, Friendly Neighbors Extension Club and Sons of Norway. She loved to crochet.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; her husband, one daughter-in-law Kathy Hegdahl and one sister Pearl Feist.
SURVIVORS: include three sons, Robert Hegdahl of Yankton, Jerry (Connie) Hegdahl of Wentworth and Randy Hegdahl of Madison; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Visitation: Begins noon Sunday, Jan. 25, 2009

Constance Casmira Shriver
February 13, 1936 - January 15, 2015
Constance "Connie" Casmira Shriver, 78, of Brookings, SD, passed away January 15, 2015 at the Neighborhoods at Brookview, Brookings, SD. Mass of Christian Burial has been set for 10:30am Monday, January 19, 2015 at Pius XII Newman Center, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 2:00pm to 4:00pm Sunday, January 18, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD with a 4:00pm Liturgical Wake Service and Rosary to follow. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Constance Casmira Kawalek was born February 13, 1936 in Minneapolis, MN, the daughter of Victor and Mary (Zgutowicz) Kawalek. She grew up in northeast Minneapolis, attending All Saints Catholic School. She then attended John Marshall High School in Minneapolis. Connie went on to attend the Minneapolis School of Business where she received her Secretarial Certificate.
Connie met James Harlan Shriver in 1958 at the Catholic Youth Center in Minneapolis, MN. They were united in marriage on June 11, 1960 at the All Saints Catholic Church. Due to her husband’s Navy career, she and their family moved 6 different times. Following his career they moved to Brookings in 1983. Connie worked at SDSU's Briggs Library in acquisitions. She loved buying books! Connie retired in 2003.
Connie loved Sci-Fi books and movies. She enjoyed reading a variety of genres, crossword puzzles and she loved shopping for a bargain.
Connie is survived by her husband, James H. Shriver of Brookings, SD; three children, Veronica Rose (Jim Kepford) Shriver of White, SD, Rebecca Anne (Phil) Chvala of Meadow Grove, NE and Victor (Robin) Shriver of Brookings, SD; nine grandchildren, Christopher, Catherine and Amanda Poole, Joseph Shriver, Audrey and Daniel Chvala, Bridgette, Kade and Aimee Shriver; four great-grandchildren; one brother, Dennis Kawalek of Santa Rosa, CA and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, Victor; mother, Mary; stepfather, Joseph; two brothers, Lawrence and Raymond; one sister, Gertrude; mother-in-law, Catherine and father-in-law, Ernest.
Deborah F. Christenson
June 11, 1950 - January 15, 2015
Deborah F. Christenson, 64, of Elkton, formerly of Waubay, passed away Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Avera Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls. Memorial services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, January 24, 2015 at First Baptist Church in Webster, SD. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service starting at 12:00 noon. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Deborah Faye Griggs was born on June 11, 1950 in Atlanta, GA, the daughter of Ira Guy "Rocky" III and Elizabeth Faye "Betty" (Sudduth) Griggs. She grew up in the Atlanta area and graduated from Walker High School in 1968. Following graduation, she moved to Nashville, TN, where she worked as a mixologist before she moved back to Atlanta, where she worked for Delta Airlines.
She was united in marriage to Carl Christenson on November 15 1991 in Webster, SD. She worked at Alco in Webster, as part of the management team. She also worked in road construction and worked for Dakota Sioux Casino Hotel, until her health declined.
She enjoyed ceramics, gardening, horseback riding, rodeos, music, collecting knickknacks, reading, throwing darts, bowling and traveling with her husband of 30 years, Carl. She also had a huge love for animals. The greatest joys in her life were her, husband, daughters, grandchildren, family and friends.
Deborah is loved and cherished by her daughters, grandchildren, family and very special friends; Don, Siouxie, and Pam Bury, Sally Neilan, Ric Hopkins, Jerry Muller, Kathy Burdette and Linda Jackson, as well as many more!
She is survived by her two daughters, Amber and husband Slade Julius, of Elkton, SD and Ashley and husband Travis Johnson, of Brookings, SD; one step-daughter, Angie Christenson, of Hudson, WI; fourteen grandchildren, Juston, Preston, Portia, Aricia, Jamie, Braxtan, Jasper, Cody, Alexis, Amaya, Cameron, Alyssa, Liberty and Morgan; mother, Elizabeth "Betty" Faye Griggs, of Auburn, GA; three brothers: Ira Guy "Butch" Griggs, IV, of Auburn, GA, William Terrell "Terry" Griggs, of Windor, GA, John Kevin and wife Terri Griggs, of Titusville, FL; three sisters, Nancy Gail and husband Jim Brothers, of Conway, SC, Cynthia Denise and husband Bill Vining, of Oviedo, FL and Joan Mechelle Griggs and her significant other Jack Marlow, of Covington, GA and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her wonderful father Ira Guy "Rocky" Griggs, III and the love of her life, Carl Christenson in 2013.
Lindsay C. May
(February 2, 1981 - January 27, 2009)
Lindsay C. May, age 27, of Sioux Falls, died Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at her residence.
Lindsay Christina May was born February 2, 1981 at Bismarck, ND to Charles E. and Kathy (Borns) May. She grew up in Madison and graduated in 1999 from Madison High School. During her schooling, she was very active in Girl Scouts, FFA and 4-H. She was employed at Hardees Restaurant, Bethel Lutheran Home and Lake Vet Clinic. After graduation, she attended Ridgewater College in Willmar, MN for vet tech training and was employed as a C.N.A. at various hospitals and nursing homes.
She moved back to Madison and worked with Volunteers of America, an organization focused on clean water issues and wind energy. She also was employed at Pizza Hut, Boss’ Pizza, Black Sheep Coffee Co. and Doggy Day Care at Mini-Critters in Sioux Falls.
Her greatest loves in the world were her daughter and the many lost and abandoned animals that came to her for tender loving care. She enjoyed music and dancing, and had a huge circle of family and friends all over the country.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her father Charles; her grandparents, Cliff & Dot Borns, Hank & Lillian Reimer; and Jack May; and her great-grandmother, Orma McInnis.
SURVIVORS: her darling 20 month-old daughter, Charli Kay Price of Sioux Falls; her parents Kathy and Scott Janke of Madison; her sister Erica of Maryland; two nieces; several aunts, uncles and cousins; and her pets.

Beverly M. Leighton
Aug. 16, 1931 - April 29, 2012
Madison - Beverly M. Leighton, 80, died Sunday, April 29, 2012, at the Madison Community Hospital after a couragous two-year battle with cancer.
Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Lutheran Church at Nunda, with the Rev. Paul Johnston officiating. Burial is in the Rosehill Cemetery at Wentworth. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today, with family present to greet friends beginning at 7 p.m. at the Randall Funeral Home in Madison.
Beverly M. Leighton was born Aug. 16, 1931, at Madison, the daughter of Orlando and Bernice (Petersen) Leighton. She grew up on the family farm near Rutland, and attended the Rutland School graduating in 1949. She then attended General Beadle State Teachers College at Madison, where she received her teacher's certificate. She later continued her education and attained her B.S. in education. She taught in a country school, first teaching at Lincoln Country School in Lake County, and then the Lampson Country School in Moody County. She then went on to teach first grade for the next 41 years for the Pipestone Public School System until the time of her retirement from teaching in 1996. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church at Nunda and a former member of the Bethel Lutheran Church in Rutland.
She is survived by four sisters, Ruth (Hart) Erickson of Arlington, Jean Ingemansen of Brookings, Dolly Uthe of Madison and LaVetta (Bob) Foster of Brookings; a brother-in-law, Scottie Stonefield of Sioux Falls; two sisters-in-law, Delores and Sandy Leighton, both of Madison; 27 nieces and nephews and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by two brothers: Larry Leighton in 1995 and Donald Leighton in 2007 and a sister: Maurine Stonefield in 2005.
