Clayton R. Lemke
June 6, 1937 - January 28, 2015

Clayton R. Lemke, 77, of Brookings, SD passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2015 at Brookings Health System, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services have been set for 11:00am, Monday, February 2, 2015 at First Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 9:00am to 11:00am Monday, February 2, 2015 at First Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Clayton R. Lemke was born on June 6, 1937 in Clear Lake, SD the son of Edward and Alta (Struss) Lemke. Clayton received his education in Clear Lake, SD.

Clayton was united in marriage to Lou Ann Colonna on May 6, 1961 in Lake Benton, MN. From 1961 until 1970 he was employed at SDSU Physical Plant. He then was employed with the City of Brookings until 1978. In 1978, they moved to Custer, SD and lived there until 1985, when they moved back to Brookings. Clayton was then employed at SDSU Housing for several years before going back to the Physical Plant. In 1988, he retired from SDSU.

Clayton is survived by his wife, Lou Ann of Brookings, SD; one son, Timothy (Connie) Lemke of Bruce, SD; one daughter, Kimberly Compton of Brookings, SD; four grandchildren, JD Compton, Ashely, Holly and Trey Lemke; one brother, Marlo (Sylvia) of Aurora, SD and two sisters, Marcile (Virgil) Djonne and Junice (Doug) McKee all of Clear Lake, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harlan and one granddaughter, Nicole Compton.

Ellen O. Straw
(June 10, 1907 - January 12, 2004)

Ellen O. Straw, age 96, of Madison, SD, died Monday, January 12, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare, Madison.

Ellen Olive Getty was born June 10, 1907, at Chester, SD, to Arthur and Helen Leone (Jones) Getty. She graduated from Chester High School and attended Eastern Normal College for one year. She married Thomas Straw on October 1, 1929, at Madison. They farmed in Lake County for several years before moving into Madison. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene where she received a distinguished service award.

PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; her husband in 1991; three sons, Thomas, Ernest and Roger; one grandson, Terry Severtson; two brothers, Elmer Getty and Johnny Getty; and one sister, Bessie Phipps.

SURVIVORS: five daughters, Ruth (Marvin) Bagley of Madison, Wilda Severtson of Brandon, SD, Virginia Kaufman of Kent, WA, Mary (Gordon) Boe of North Wales, PA, and Carol (Charlie) Clark of Vermillion, SD; one half-sister, Pearl White of California; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Lois Leslie Taylor
August 7, 1959 - February 1, 2015

Lois L. Taylor, age 55, died on Sunday, February 1, 2015 at her home in rural Toronto, SD. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 6, at Sterling United Methodist Church (9 miles North of Brookings on Old Hwy 77, or 471st Avenue). Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 5, at Rude’s Funeral Home. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Lois Leslie Taylor was born on August 7, 1959 the 3 lb. 5 ˝ oz. daughter of Merle and Anna Taylor. Lois was raised on the family farm, inheriting her mother’s love of birds, her dad’s love of farming, and her family’s love of horses. Lois participated in 4-H, softball, and various horse programs. She participated in basketball and track while in high school. She graduated from Estelline High School in 1978 and went on to attend South Dakota State University. She was very active in the SDSU Rodeo Club and was on the Jackrabbit Stampede committee. She graduated in 1982 with a printing management major.

Lois worked for a short time as a farm and ranch hand for Trudy and Gordon Flesner of Milesville, SD. She went to work as a pipe liner for Northern Border/Trans Canada. In the thirty plus years, she met and worked with people throughout the United States and Canada.

Lois was currently president of the East River Regional High School Rodeo Board. She has been small arena (timed-event) director for many years. In 2014, at the South Dakota High School Rodeo Finals, she was recognized as Person of the Year. She loved working with the contestants and their families. Lois was a lifelong member of the Sterling Methodist Church. Above all, Lois loved spending time with friends and family.

Lois is survived by her mother, Anna; two brothers, James (Gwen), of Estelline, SD, and Marc (Dee), of Mandan, ND; two sisters, Vianne, of Mandan, ND, and Robin, of Bruce, SD; six nieces, Anna, Christina (Jason), Dani, Amy, Chelsea, and Megan; one nephew, Colin.

Lois was preceded in death by her father, Merle, and brother, Lowell.

Hartley D. Nordbye
Oct. 6, 1924 – July 24, 2012

Hartley D. Nordbye, 87, died Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at his residence.

Hartley D. Nordbye was born on Oct. 6, 1924, at his home in Sinai, the son of the Henry and Bertha (Christiansen) Nordbye.

Hartley received his education in rural schools in Brookings County. He married Frances Swedlund on Sept. 8, 1943, in Volga. He served in the United States Army from 1943 until his discharge in 1945. During his time in World War II, Hartley served in Normandy, France, on Omaha Beach and Battle of the Bulge and received a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star because he carried his sergeant to safety. After returning to Brookings, he was employed as a bricklayer for many years until his retirement in 1998. In 1964, Hartley owned and operated Hartley’s Bar (formerly the Coach Light then Chevy’s and sold in 2006 and is currently the 9).

His wife, Frances, died on Jan. 1, 2003, in Brookings.

He was a life member of the International Union of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers for more than 50 years, a life member of the VFW and also a member of the Elks and the American Legion.

In spare time Hartley enjoyed playing pool, fast pitch softball, bowling, racing, playing cards during the winter and waltzing with his wife.

He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, gardening and especially spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by two sons, Donald (Wanda Barton) Nordbye and Hartley (Laura) Nordbye, all of Brookings; four daughters, Diane Owens, Joanie (Greg) Himley, Shirley (Lucky Moore) Christopherson all of Brookings, Rebecca Konop of Estelline; a daughter-in-law, Nina Nordbye of Brookings; 31 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Stanley Nordbye of Orland, Calif.; a sister, Luella Lightcamp of Los Nietos, Calif., and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances; a son, Steven, a grandson, Danny; two great-grandsons, Christopher and Brady, a great-great-grandson, Ryder; two brothers, Marvin and Elmer and two sisters, Gena and Myrtle.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Monday at Morningside Community Church in Brookings.

Visitation is from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Cleone F. Heibult
January 9, 1942 - February 9, 2015

Cleone Heibult, age 73, of Brookings died on February 9, 2015 at the Golden Living Center, Madison, SD. Her funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2015, at First United Methodist Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10, at Rude’s Funeral Home. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Cleone Faye Blumeyer was born on January 9, 1942 in Estelline, South Dakota the daughter of Amos and Anna (Rust) Blumeyer.

Cleone received her education in Estelline, South Dakota and was a graduate of the Estelline High School in 1960.

She was married to Richard Carter on April 6, 1962. He died on November 5, 1963.

Cleone was united in marriage to Harlan Heibult on December 4, 1964 in Ivanhoe, Minnesota. After their marriage, they lived in Marshall, Minnesota for a short time before moving to Brookings, where she was employed at Daktronics from 1974 until 1994.

After leaving Daktronics, she took on numerous house cleaning jobs. She and Harlan took on the task of keeping the First United Methodist Church clean for more than 10 years.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brookings. She especially enjoyed working on crafts, gardening, and spending time with her family. Her pets also meant the world to her.

Cleone is survived by her husband, Harlan, of Brookings; two daughters, Lori Holman and her fiancé Dave, of Madison, South Dakota, Dawn Murray, of Colman, South Dakota; ten grandchildren, Jessica, Josh, Jarrod, Jamie, Jennifer, Matt, Daniel, Jeremy, Dustin, and Paige; twelve great-grandchildren and one sister, Betty Juntunen, of Bryant, South Dakota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Lisa Woldt; and son-in-law, Bernie Holman.

Donald E. Koerlin
September 10, 1931 - February 11, 2015

Donald E. Koerlin, 83, of Volga, passed away Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at his home under hospice care. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Saturday, February 14, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Donald E. Koerlin was born on September 10, 1931 in Antelope Valley, SD, the son of Francis E. and Florence (Limberg) Koerlin. He was the youngest of four children. The family moved to the Brookings area when he was three years old.

He attended Brookings High School until he entered the service on December of 1949. He served 2 years in the Air Force during the Korean War and was discharged in November 1952. He moved to Moses Lake, WA, where he met and married Louie Lee R. Schwab on December 27, 1954. Together, they moved to Minneapolis, where he attended Dunwoody Institute for Auto Body. He purchased an Auto Body Shop in Minneapolis, and continued to manage the shop until it closed due to the relocation of the interstate highways. The couple moved to Brookings, where they lived with Don’s parents on the farm and Don worked at Dakota Fire Apparatus before working at Don’s Body Shop in Brookings. A few years later, he opened and operated SouthTown Sales in Brookings before relocating the business to their home east of Volga in 1979 and renaming the business Midway Truck & Parts. Don operated the business with his sons until his retirement in 2010.

Don was an avid bowler and was a member of many leagues which he was a past secretary and president. Don traveled to many national bowling tournaments with his wife Lou and his bowling teams over the years. Don also bowled with his sons on a couple of leagues to make it a family affair. Don was elected to the local Bowling Hall of Fame. Don enjoyed hunting and fishing, but most of all, working to revive old pickups and cars. He seemed to know everything about most vehicles and kept a running inventory in his head of where things were at in the salvage yard. He sold many parts over the years and made many friends along the way. Don and Lou had just celebrated their 60th Wedding Anniversary in December with a card shower.

He is survived by his three children, Kelly (Gloria) Koerlin, of Volga, SD, Kimberlee (Justin) Hamilton, of Janesville, WI and Kevin Koerlin, of Wessington Springs, SD; five grandchildren, Donovan, Ethan and Cadan Koerlin, all of Volga, SD, Jeremie Hamilton, of Platteville, WI and Jacob Koerlin, of Sioux Falls, SD; sister, Marion Bailey, of Omaha, NE; brother, Gene Liebenbritt, Crawford, NE; sister-in-law, Darlene Koerlin, of Canby, MN and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Don is preceded in death by his wife, Lou, on January 19, 2015, his parents, parents-in-law, brother, Richard "Dick" Koerlin, sister, Betty Liebentritt, brother-in-law, Matt Bailey; brothers and sisters-in-law, Harold and Opal Schwab, Wayne (Pat) Schwab, Melvin (Evie) Schwab and Ephraim (Mary) Schwab, all of Washington.

Roderick "Rod" Meyer
February 20, 1927 - February 12, 2015

Roderick "Rod" Meyer, age 87, died on Thursday, February 12, 2015 at United Living Community, Brookings, SD. His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, February 16, 2015 at Grace Free Lutheran Church, Bruce, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 15, at Rude’s Funeral Home. Interment will be at St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, rural Bruce, SD.

Rod Meyer was born on February 20, 1927, the son of Herman and Emma (Seleen) Meyer, in Heron Lake, MN. His family moved to the rural White, SD area while he was an infant. He attended rural schools in the White area and graduated from White High School in 1945. He was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps in June, 1945. He served in the Philippines and advanced to the rank of Corporal before being honorably discharged in December, 1946.

When he returned home he attended South Dakota State College and then began farming.

He married Darlene "Dot" Anderson on December 4, 1955. They raised their four children on the family farm southeast of White, SD.

Rod served as a White school board member and was instrumental in consolidating the White and Toronto school districts into Deubrook Schools. He was a lifetime member of the Higgens-Jessen American Legion Post 88 in White, SD.

Rod is survived by his children, Robert Meyer and his wife Cindy, of Lake Poinsett, SD; James Meyer and his wife Gloria of White, SD; Donna Wermedal and her husband Doug, of Volga, SD; and Dale Meyer and his wife Becky, of Volga, SD. Rod is also survived by nine grandchildren, Laura Johnson, Thomas Josephsen, Steven Meyer, Richard Meyer, Nathanael Meyer, Danielle Wermedal, Drew Wermedal, Travis Meyer, and Sara Meyer; three great-grandchildren, Madison Johnson, Payton Johnson, and Maizielyn Josephsen; one sister, Merilynn Snyder, of Prescott, AZ; and numerous other relatives.

Rod was preceded in death by his parents; wife, "Dot"; three brothers, Harlan, Keith, and Richard.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, P.O. Box 285, Bruce, SD, 57220.

Iona P. Bjorklund
(October 2, 1927 - February 19, 2004)

Iona P. Bjorklund was born October 2, 1927, at Orland, SD, to Gustav and Minnie (Tidemann) Bjorklund. She attended school at Orland and the S.D. School for the Blind at Gary, SD. She lived with her parents on the farm and moved into Madison in 1973, where she lived with her brother Kenneth. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Orland, and active in St. Peter Women of the ELCA.

PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; two brothers, Dennis Bjorklund and Kenneth Bjorklund; and two sisters, May Harms and Rose Rehfeldt.

SURVIVORS: include several nieces and nephews.
