Bernice K. Oltmann
(December 13, 1912 - January 4, 2004)
Bernice K. Oltmann, age 91, of Madison, SD, died Sunday, January 4, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare, Madison.
Bernice Katherine Bergerson was born December 13, 1912, at LeMars, Iowa, to William and Louise (Reelfs) Bergerson. She moved to South Dakota as a child and attended school at Orland, SD.
She married Arthur Oltmann on April 12, 1939, at Madison.
They farmed near Franklin, SD and she moved to Madison in 1976 when her husband died. She moved into Beverly Healthcare in 1997.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Madison.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents, her husband, one son Paul, four sisters and five brothers.
SURVIVORS: one daughter, Nancy (Bernie) Reifers of Madison; two grandchildren, Mark (Lisa) Mathieu and Sally Kranz, two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ellen Jones and Regina Guffy both of Chico, CA.
Edward William Kramer
May 2, 1921 – July 25, 2012
Flandreau - Edward William Kramer, 91, died Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at his son’s home in rural Flandreau.
Funeral services are Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church in Flandreau. Burial is at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Cemetery. Visitation begins at 3 p.m today with a scripture service at 7 p.m. at Skroch Funeral Chapel in Flandreau.
Edward was born May 2, 1921, two miles south of Lone Tree in Moody County to George F. and Anna C. (Hemmer) Kramer. At age 5, Ed moved with his family to a farm near Chester and started school at Pleasant Valley School.
His family moved near Colman and a couple years later to a farm southeast of Flandreau, where he continued his education in various country schools in Moody County.
In 1931, Ed started working outside the family farm. Ed did farming by horses and would harness two to six horses a day every day except Sundays.
Ed joined the U.S. Army and was put in the 937 Army Engineers. He served in the European Theater, landing on Omaha Beach seven days after D-Day. He fought in Battle of the Bulge. He returned to the family farm in 1946.
On Feb. 23, 1952, Ed married Evelyn M. Anderson at St. Joseph’s Cathedral Church in Sioux Falls.
Ed and Evelyn purchased the family farm in 1963 and in 1972 they bought the adjoining farm from Thomas Hart. Ed and Evelyn moved into Flandreau on May 1, 1990, and their son Les and his wife reside on the family farm.
They continued to help on the farm, garden and raise livestock. Evelyn preceded him in death on Oct. 20, 2007.
Ed enjoyed traveling and farming. Ed was a lifetime member of the VFW, a past board member of the Sioux Valley Electric and Grovena Township board and past vice chairman of Big Sioux Rural Water.
He is survived by two sons, Leslie (Renae) and Roger (Lisa), all of Flandreau; a grandson; six siblings, George Kramer of Rochester, Minn., Louis Kramer of Sioux Falls, Margaret (Harold) Weins of Sioux Falls, Norbert (Marge) Kramer of Sioux Falls, James Kramer of Chamberlain, Mary (Virgil) Myers of Flandreau and several nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, John Kramer, Thomas Kramer and Sam "Francis" Kramer.
Memorials can be made to Avera Dell Rapids Hospital.
Steven Kenneth Larson
October 1, 1951 - February 22, 2015
Steven Kenneth Larson, 63, of Elkton, SD, passed away suddenly at his home February 22, 2015.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
Rude's Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Boyd J. Bonzer
February 19, 1919 - March 1, 2015
Boyd John Bonzer, age 96, died on Sunday, March 1, 2015 at Stoney Brook Suites in Brookings, SD. His funeral service will be at 10:30 am on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at First Lutheran Church, Brookings. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 to 6:00 pm at Rude’s Funeral Home, with a 4:30 pm Prayer Service. Interment will be at First Lutheran Cemetery, Brookings.
Boyd J. Bonzer was born on February 19, 1919 in rural Hecla, South Dakota, the son of Earl B. and Goldie (Robins) Bonzer.
Boyd received his education in Hecla, South Dakota, and was a graduate of the Hecla High School in 1936. He continued his education at South Dakota State College and received his B.S. degree in poultry science in 1942 and his M.S. degree at South Dakota State University in 1958.
Boyd was united in marriage to Irene Herther on July 25, 1942 in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
He then served in the United States Army Quartermaster Corps during WWII from 1942 until 1946 in Philadelphia, PA. After serving in the military, he returned to Brookings where he was a partner in a chicken hatchery for two years. In 1948, he joined the South Dakota Cooperative Extension Service and worked as a poultry specialist until his retirement in 1977. After his retirement, he and Irene spent the summer months in Brookings and at their lake cabin and the winter months in Mesa, AZ until recent years.
From 1957 until 1977, he wrote a poultry column for "The Farmer" magazine. He also worked three years as field manager and 26 years as Sec-Treasurer for the South Dakota Poultry Improvement Association.
During his career, he worked with all phases of the poultry industry on the farm, State and National level. He also served three years as Co-op Extension Service representative on the SDSU Academic Senate and one year as acting leader of the Poultry and Egg Section of the Animal Science Department. He directed the Poultry Improvement Association effort and assisted the State Livestock Sanitation Board to obtain a Pullorum Disease-free status for SD, a national record. He worked with poultry and egg producers through the change from the small farm flock to large commercial units in insulated and forced ventilated housing. One specialty was demonstrating the art of barbequing chicken for large groups. During his career, he received awards, including 4-H Alumni Award in 1957, Honorary State Farmer, S.D. FFA in 1961, and Poultry Man of the Year by the South Dakota Poultry Improvement Association in 1970.
He was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings and served on the Board of Trustees and Chairman of the Cemetery Committee. He was also a member of the National Poultry Improvement Association, South Dakota Poultry Improvement Association, Poultry Science Association, Poultry and Egg Institute of America, Advisory Committee to Pheasants Unlimited, Advisor to Midwest Poultry Federation, the Epsilon Sigma Phi, Gamma Sigma Delta, NARFE (National Association of Retired Employees), AARP (American Association of Retired Persons), Brookings American Legion Post #74 and the Brookings Golden Kiwanis Club. He especially enjoyed woodworking, traveling, photography, fixing things, playing cards and spending time with his family and many friends.
Boyd is survived by his two daughters, Barbara Hayter and her husband Richard of Manhattan, Kansas, and Janis Anderson and her husband Vernon of Carrington, North Dakota; four grandchildren, Sheila Hayter (Greg Oaklief), Ryan Hayter (Stacey), Gretchen Sharp (Brian), and Pehr Anderson (Teresa Esser); eight great-grandchildren, Daniel and Travis Sharp, Megan, Brennan and Kian Oaklief, Chloe and Athena Anderson, and Grayson Hayter.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, in 2009; and brother, Berniel Bonzer.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to First Lutheran Church, Brookings, or Parkinson’s Support Group, Brookings.
Evelyn M. Eller
(July 12, 1915 - March 3, 2004)
Evelyn Maxine Kuchenbecker was born July 12, 1915, at Madison, SD, to Emil and Elizabeth (Beesley) Kuchenbecker. She graduated from Madison High School. She worked as a waitress at Jack’s Bar and then worked as a clerk at the Cork-n-Bottle for 45 years. She retired in 1999. She was a life member of the Izaak Walton League and a member of the United Methodist Church, Madison.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; one brother, Leonard Kuchenbecker; two sisters, Luella Shephard and Viola Knox; one nephew, Kevin Knox; and a special friend, Bill Waters.
SURVIVORS: three nieces, Dawn (Chesley) Foster of Madison, Judy (Joe) Linn of Casper, WY, and Nora (Darrel) Lee of Yankton and one sister-in-law, Ruby Kuchenbecker of Yankton.
Daniel C. Thompson
March 19, 1943 - December 1, 2014
Daniel Thompson, 71, of Brookings, SD died Monday, December 1, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Memorial services are at 2:00 p.m. Friday, December 5, 2014 at Rude’s Funeral Home. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Rude’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Daniel Charles Thompson was born in Creston, Iowa on March 19, 1943 to Charles and Wanda (Farwell) Thompson.
Dan graduated from Creston High School in 1961, Drake University in Des Moines, IA in 1967, and was enlisted in the Navy from 1967 to 1971. In 1976, he earned a master’s degree from Creighton University in education.
Dan married Nancy Young in 1972 and they had two children, Susan and Chad. He taught and coached in Glenwood, IA, from 1971 to 1977. From 1977 until 2003, he was principal, coach, and teacher at Twin Cedars Community Schools in Bussey, IA.
In 2007, he and Nancy moved to Brookings, SD to be closer to family. Dan loved playing football in high school and college, had an intense interest in history, and enjoyed his hobby of painting.
Dan is survived by his wife Nancy; his children, Susan Hoskins and her husband Bill and their children Caroline and Daniel of Garretson, SD; Chad Thompson and his wife Rachel and their son Josiah of Anchorage, AK; one sister, Barbara Kirkpatrick and her husband Ed of Newport News, VA; two brothers, Dale Thompson and his wife Karen of Chuckey, TN; Rob Thompson and his wife Kim of Marion, IN.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given in Dan’s name to the Brookings Arts Council, 524 4th Street, Brookings, SD 57006.
Wilma Haufschild
Sept. 24, 1921 – Oct. 4, 2014
Arlington - Wilma Haufschild, 93, a former Oldham area resident, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2014, at the Golden Living Center in Arlington.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Lake Whitewood Lutheran Church. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington and preceding services in the church on Wednesday.
Wilma Luvern Soren, the oldest of three children, was born Sept. 24, 1921, to Arthur and Dagmar (Anderson) Soren at rural Lake Preston. The family moved to a farm northwest of Arlington for a short period of time and then moved to the Soren family farm southeast of Lake Preston. Wilma attended grade school at Spring Lake No. 3 and graduated from Lake Preston High School in 1939. She earned a teacher's certificate from General Beadle State Teachers College in 1940 at Madison. She taught at the Kapelle School, the Malone School and Spring Lake No.10, which were all rural schools in Kingsbury County.
Wilma married Herbert Haufschild of Arlington in 1943. They farmed northeast of Hetland and then moved to California for a brief period of time.
They returned to South Dakota and bought a farm northeast of Oldham, where they spent the rest of their lives together. They had one son Loren, born in 1951. Herbert died in 2000 after 57 years of marriage.
Wilma enjoyed cooking, canning, baking, sewing, playing cards, telling jokes, fieldwork and farm chores. She is especially remembered for her excellent baking skills and her donations of pies, cakes and desserts to church and community functions. She was voted Royal Homemaker of the year in 1967 at the Lake Preston Farm Show.
Wilma was a member of Lake Whitewood Lutheran Church where she over the years served as a Sunday school teacher and superintendent. She served on the church council and a number of other church boards. She was an active member of the Ladies Aid and Sewing Circle. She was also a long-time member of Prairie Village Historical Society, Prairie Village Auxiliary and worked in the Village Kitchen during Jamboree Days.
She is survived by her son, Loren Haufschild of Oldham; a sister, Donna Baumberger of Sioux Falls and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert, and a sister, Mavis Kidder.
Todd Sheffield

Todd Sheffield, age 42, of Reno, NV; formerly of Madison; died Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Reno, NV.
Survivors include three sons, Charlie, Sean and Aaron, all of Reno; his parents, Charles and Wanda Sheffield of Madison; and two sisters, Kelli Sheffield of Ontario, Canada, and Jarri Sheffield Leighton of Madison.
Visitation: There will be no visitation.
