William (Bill) Obrecht
Nov. 2, 1948 – July 27, 2012
Kearney, Neb. - William (Bill) Michael Obrecht, 63, died Friday, July 27, 2012 at home surrounded by family and his pet dog, Radar, after a heroic battle against pancreatic cancer.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 30, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church in Kearney, Neb. The Rev. Abraham Kaduthodiyil and the Rev. Paul Colling will officiate. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Sunday at the church. A vigil will follow at 7 p.m.
The body will be donated to the Nebraska Anatomical Board following the service on Monday.
Bill was born in Algona, Iowa, on Nov. 2, 1948, to Verna (Ferden) and Arthur Obrecht. He graduated with his certified registered nurse anesthetist degree from the University of Nebraska Medical Center in 1976. He practiced in Algona, Iowa; Fremont, Neb.; Brookings and Grand Island, Neb., for a total of 36 years.
On Sept. 5, 1970, he married LeAnn Habrock in Emerson, Neb. They had four children: Beth, Renee, Becky, and David.
Some of his most cherished activities and hobbies were hiking, fishing, backpacking, camping, scuba diving, boating, bird-watching, photography, singing, cantoring at church, barbershop singing, and traveling with his family and friends. Also, he served his country in the Navy Reserves.
Survivors include his wife, LeAnn; daughters Beth (David) Obrecht Rush of Salina, Kan., Renee (Bryce) Johnson of Seward, Neb., and Rebecca (Simon) Appleford of Clemson, S.C; a son, David (Nicole) Obrecht of Gretna, Neb.; sisters Patricia Maahs of Algona, Iowa, and Christine (Susan) Obrecht of Golden, Colo., and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Verna and Arthur Obrecht, and two brothers, Steve and Larry Obrecht.

James H. Brookshire

James H. "Jim" Brookshire, age 80, of Madison, died Tues., Dec. 30, 2008 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls.
Jim was born December 30, 1928 at Lake Preston to Charles and Theressa (Seipp) Brookshire. He graduated from Lake Preston High School and served in the US Army during the Korean War.
He married Betty Shaikoski on April 18, 1952 at Lake Preston Lutheran Church.
He was an auto mechanic in Lake Preston until 1970, when they moved to Madison and took over the American Family Insurance Agency, which he owned for over 30 years. He retired in 2000 and enjoyed taking care of his cats, gardening and fishing.
He was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church of Orland, Madison American Legion, Masonic Lodge and Order of Eastern Star.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: parents; one son Michael Brookshire; and one sister, Mary Carlson
SURVIVORS: include his wife Betty Brookshire of Madison; two daughters, Jody (special friend Stanford Strong) Bossman of Wentworth and Jill (Wendell) Black of Sioux Falls; two grandchildren; one great-grandson; one brother, Robert (Linda) Brookshire of Arizona; one sister, Shirley (John) Gilmore of Golden, CO and several nieces and nephews.

Lawrence Jason Neil King, 3 months 2 days, died on Sunday, November 9, 2014 at his home in Brookings, SD. His funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, November 13, 2014 at Rude’s Funeral Home. There will be a visitation from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 12, 2014 at Rude’s Funeral Home.
Lawrence Jason Neil King was born on August 7, 2014 in Brookings, SD, the son of Cassaundra Crowell and Joshua King.
He was a very happy baby. He loved the attention that he received when family and friends were around. He brought smiles to everyone with his baby talk.
He loved being outside with his mom and dad. He was always on the move and enjoyed riding in the car.
Lawrence is survived by his parents; grandmothers, Theresa King of Brookings and LeAnn Crowell of Brookings; aunts, Tiffany Crowell, Abigal Amundsen, Shawna Rabbit, and Dani Songstad, all of Brookings; uncles, AJ Roberts, Aaron Roberts, Hartley King, and Sonny Stands, all of Brookings.
Shirley L. Knutson

Shirley L. Knutson, 78, of Brookings, SD passed away Monday, November 17, 2014, at Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be at 11:00 am Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 10:00 am.
Shirley Lee Ditmeyer was born on March 11, 1936, in Pipestone, MN, the daughter of Leland and Ellen (Ellgen) Ditmeyer. She grew up in Pipestone where she attended school and graduated from Pipestone High School in 1954. She furthered her education at Stewart’s School of Cosmetology in Sioux Falls, SD. She moved to Brookings, SD, where she began her life-long career as a beautician. She owned and operated the Charm Salon; and later Shirley’s Salon, then finished her 50-year career working part-time at the Carousel.
She was united in marriage to Stanford "Sonny" Knutson on November 14, 1958, at First Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD.
Shirley was an active member of First Lutheran Church. In her free time she enjoyed playing bridge, reading, attending plays and movies, vacationing with her family and following passion for music and dancing.
Grateful for having shared her life with her three daughters, Joy (Preston) Steen, of Fargo, ND, Lyn Fergen, of Brookings, SD, and Lori (Mike Henderson) Knutson, of Phoenix, AZ; five grandchildren; one brother, Rod (Janet) Ditmeyer; nieces, nephews and special friend, Virgil Huebner.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Gilmer C. Doop

Gilmer C. Doop, 84, of Bruce, SD, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2014 at Avera McKennan Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD. Funeral Services have been set for 2:00pm Tuesday, November 25, 2014 at Grace Free Lutheran Church, Bruce, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Monday, November 24, 2014 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Gilmer C. Doop was born on February 10, 1930 in Bruce, SD, the son of Calvin Omar and Gertrude J. (Gerdes) Doop. He grew up and attended school in Bruce, SD. He worked on the family farm in his early years. Gilmer moved to Brookings to work as a carpenter in 1956.
Gilmer was united in marriage to Marilyn Marie Swenson on August 7, 1958 in Luverne, MN. They made their home in Brookings, SD. He worked as a carpenter for the Moriarty’s for 32 years.
In 1994, Gilmer and Marilyn moved to Bruce, SD where they made their home. Even in his retirement, he never retired; he was always on the move, mowing many places in Bruce, collecting antiques and enjoying time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed listening to music. Gilmer enjoyed every minute of life he could until his passing.
Gilmer is survived by his wife, Marilyn Doop of Bruce, SD; their children, Marlin (Susan) Doop of Gillette, WY, Julienne (Tim) Satterlee of Brookings, SD and Darwin Doop of Sioux Falls, SD; eight grandchildren, Dustin, Char, Bambi, Jacob, Miranda, Jesse, Joey and Dehlia; five great-grandchildren, Tyler, Morgan, Isabella, Aspen and Oliver; two sisters, Dorothy Jacobson of Brookings, SD and Pauline Envoldsen of Brookings, SD and two brothers, Wayne (Caroline) Doop of Brookings, SD and Richard (Joyce) Doop of Lake Poinsett, SD.
Gilmer was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Virginia and Delores and four brothers, Dale Roger Harley and Gordon.
Ellen G. Bergerson
Dec. 18, 1925 – July 26, 2012
Sioux Falls - Ellen G. Bergerson, 86, formerly of Madison, died Thursday, July 26, 2012, at Dougherty Hospice, Sioux Falls. Ellen fought a courageous battle with cancer.
Burial will take place at Graceland Cemetery, Madison with a celebration of life service at a later date for Ellen’s family and friends. There will be no visitation.
Ellen Angen was born Dec. 18, 1925, at Staten Island, N.Y., to Alphild and Mauris Martinson. She married Norman W. Bergerson on Feb. 13, 1944, and shared 54 years of marriage until Norman’s death in 1997.
She is survied by three children: a son, Norman (Lynn) Bergerson of Crooked River Ranch, Ore., and twin daughters, Barbara Beck of Box Elder and Sandra (Michael) Keeley of Sioux Falls, a sister, Bunny (Manger) Ericksen of Toms River, N.J.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Norman, and a sister Edith Hatchett.

Lorraine Annette Rasmussen
January 19, 1936 - December 1, 2014
Lorraine A. Rasmussen, 78, of Brookings, passed away Monday, December 1, 2014 at United Living Community in Brookings. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am Saturday, December 6, 2014 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at the church beginning at 9:30 am. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.
Lorraine Annette Anderson was born on January 19, 1936 in Toronto, SD, the daughter of Arthur and Luella (Anderson) Anderson. She grew up in the Bruce area and graduated from Bruce High School.
She was united in marriage to Otto Rasmussen in November of 1954 at St. Petri Church near Bruce. To this union, they were blessed with five children, Robert, Janelle, Deanna, Larry and Nancy.
The family followed Otto where his jobs would take them. Along the way, she worked at a variety of places including nursing homes, hotels, restaurants and food services in Bruce, Brookings and Hartley, IA. Her favorite job was working at Quick Lunch Café while in Hartley.
Some of her lifetime activities included singing, dancing, walking, bicycling, reading, crosswords and puzzles. In her later years, she was able to assemble a large clown collection that provided cherished memories with family involvement.
She was a member of First Lutheran Church.
Grateful for having shared her life are her five children, Robert (Joi) Rasmussen, of Ft. Dodge, IA, Janelle Rasmussen, of Brookings, SD, Deanna Rasmussen, of Sioux Falls, SD, Larry (Connie) Rasmussen, of Cedar Falls, IA and Nancy (Ronald) Musgraves, of Gilbert, AZ; nine grandchildren, Jill, Brian, Emily, Dara, Michael, Scott, Derek, Veronica and Ryan; five great-grandchildren, Kirsten, Keegan, Cherise, Kailean and Collin; six siblings, Ardis Geringer, of Brookings, SD, Shirley (Alvin) Henry, of Arlington, SD, Alona Luewellen, of Miller, SD, Janice (Ken) VanDerWerff, of Rapid City, SD, Virgil Anderson, of Brookings, SD and Darla Ness, of Brookings, SD and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Luella Anderson, husband, Otto Rasmussen, brother, Mervin and two brothers-in-law, Howard Geringer and Ernest Luewellen.
James ‘Jim’ Ohnstad
Feb. 7, 1926 – July 21, 2012
Denver - James "Jim" Alvin Ohnstad, 86, died Saturday, July 21, 2012, at the Denver VA Medical Center.
Jim was born on Feb. 7, 1926 at Altamont to Clarence Benjamin Ohnstad and Anna Maria "Mary" Aamold Ohnstad. He graduated from Estelline High School in 1944.
He was a dairy milk tester prior to entering the U.S. Army in 1950. Jim served with the 3rd Battalion Headquarters and Headquarters Company of 223rd Infantry Regiment, 40th Division and was honorably discharged on Oct. 16, 1952, with the rank of corporal, earning the Korean Service Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, United Nations Service Medal, one Bronze Service Star, and the Army Occupation Medal (Japan).
He married Grace Stegen on Aug. 12, 1956, at Brookings, and together they raised five children.
In 1957, Jim graduated from South Dakota State College with a dairy production and manufacturing degree.
He was a member of the dairy judging team and during his senior year served as president of the Dairy Club, where for the first time women were allowed to join.
He worked in agriculture in South Dakota for a good share of his life as well as trucking and later in Gillette, Wyo., for Burlington Northern Railroad.
During their retirement, he and Grace moved to Denver to be closer to family. Grace died in June 2011.
Jim was a member of the American Legion, and a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church and the VFW serving in the honor guard at military funerals. He also was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the El Riad Shrine for 50-plus years.
He is survived by five children, Julie (Bernie) Hendricks of Brookings, Kari (Paul) Blanchard of Denver, Thomas (Janice Wood) Ohnstad, Salem Ore., Timothy (Cathy LaPonza) Ohnstad of LosAngeles and Marilee (J.C.) Manalo of Cheyenne, Wyo.; 18 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers Clair Ohnstad of Watertown and Robert (Nancy) Ohnstad of Aberdeen; a sister, Barbara (Steve) Olsen of Lynnwood, Wash., and sisters-in-law, Jan Ohnstad, Sandy Ohnstad, Phyllis Ohnstad, and Elaine Ohnstad-Eide and many nieces, nephews, cousins, Army buddies and friends.
He was preceded in death by his sister Jeanne Ohnstad, brothers John "Jack" Ohnstad, Lawrence Ohnstad and Donald Ohnstad, niece Suzanne Olsen Johnson, sisters-in-law Hazel Stegen Dempster, Evelyn Dempster, and Lois Stegen, and brothers-in-law Kermit Stegen and Adrian Dempster, and son-in-law Clark Davidson.
Burial will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Denver. There will be a memorial service on Saturday, Aug. 18, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline at 2 p.m. Horan & McConaty Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
