George Nielsen
April 7, 1919 - October 24, 2014

George Nielsen, 95, of Brookings, SD formerly of Wagner, SD, passed away Friday, October 24, 2014 at the United Living Community, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services will be 11:00am Wednesday, October 29, 2014 at Wagner Community Church of the Christian & Missionary Alliance, Wagner, SD. Visitation will be from 10:00am until the time of services at Wagner Community Church of the Christian & Missionary Alliance, Wagner, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

George Nielsen was born on April 7, 1919 to Jens and Ann Kristine (Christensen) Nielsen on a farm located north east of Wagner, South Dakota.

George was united in marriage to Evelyn Leonard on November 20, 1946 in Sioux City, IA. They were married for 68 years. George and Evelyn Nielsen spent their married life on their family farm located north of Ravinia, SD. They were blessed with two children, Barbara Ann Nielsen and Larry Leonard Nielsen.

They always attended the Wagner Christian Missionary and Alliance Church where George was the adult Sunday school teacher and church elder for many years. Until his death, he was the last living charter member of the Wagner Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. In 2003, George and Evelyn moved to Brookings, SD so that they could be close to their family.

George farmed for most of his adult life. In his retirement years, he worked for the Department of Social Services transporting patients to area clinics and hospitals. This was a ministry that both he and Evelyn truly enjoyed for many years. He will be remembered for his love of the Lord. His greatest joy was studying the Bible and reading the writings of Christian authors.

He is survived by two children, Barbara (Howard) Goodfellow of Brookings, SD and Larry (Lorna) Nielsen of Castlewood, SD; five grandchildren, Jennifer Ferguson, Ann (John) Van Stedum, Tyler (Janice) Nielsen, Austin Nielsen and Shelby Nielsen; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Karen Marie Clatterbuck of Sioux City, IA; one sister-in-law, June Leonard Carpenter of Wagner, SD; five nieces and nephews and many dear friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, Lacey Nielsen and his wife, Evelyn on September 8, 2014.

Joyce Kruger
January 20, 1940 - December 6, 2014

Joyce C. Kruger, 74, of Volga, SD died on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, SD.

Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, December 11, 2014 at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Brookings, SD. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the Kingdom Hall.

Joyce Corrine Frank was born January 20, 1940 the daughter of Walter and Mabel (Brown) Frank, near Verdi, MN. She attended school in the Verdi area and graduated from Verdi High School.

She met Elmer Kruger and they were married on December 27, 1957 in Lake Benton, MN. Shortly after their marriage they resided in Minneapolis, MN. They moved back to the Elkton area and eventually made their home in Volga, SD.

Joyce was employed by Larson Manufacturing from 1983 until she retired in 2002. Joyce enjoyed sewing and knitting and for many years attended craft fairs with the items she had made. When she wasn’t busy crafting, you could find Joyce walking around Volga or in her home on the treadmill, to stay fit.

As one of Jehovah’s Witnesses, she enjoyed reading and studying the Bible, while actively participating in the Kingdom preaching work.

Joyce is survived by her husband of 56 years, Elmer; four sisters, Lorraine Trigg of Verdi, MN, Marlene Buffington of Holland, MN, Arlis Erickson of Bemidji, MN, Karen Boehm of Pipestone, MN; one brother, Calvin Frank of Holland, MN; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her sisters, Bonnie and JoAnn, and her brother, Paul.

Phillip Edmond Plumart
May 5, 1927 - Nov. 27th, 2014

Phillip Edmond Plumart, of Brookings, age 87, passed away on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27th, 2014 in Brookings. Funeral Services will be at 1:30 pm Saturday, November 29, 2014 at Peace Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 12:30 pm at the Church. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Phillip Edmond Plumart was born in Westville, Illinois on May 5, 1927 to John and Elsie (DeBarba) Plumart, the proud son of a long line of coal miners descending from Belgium. He graduated in 1944, and two weeks later enlisted in the Army, serving in Anchorage, Alaska and earning the WWII Victory Medal.

After service to his country, Phil received his B.S. in Agriculture from the Univ. of Illinois in 1950, and his M.S. in Poultry Science from Kansas State Univ. in 1952. Phil continued his education at Purdue and the Univ. of Minnesota.

While at the Univ. of Minnesota, Phil met a pretty young nurse, Darlene Rieck of Sheboygan, WI, who attended to him after he bumped his head on the bottom of a swimming pool.

On August 4, 1956, Phil and Darlene were married.

Phil started his career at the Univ. of Georgia, and then in 1961, accepted a position in the Poultry Science Dept. at SDSU in Brookings, SD., where Phil and Darlene made their home and raised three children. Phil retired in 1989 as a Professor Emeritus and Extension Poultry Specialist.

During his career, Phil initiated and coordinated the computerization of the SD State Fair 4 H exhibits and received numerous awards, including the Teacher of the Year award multiple times, Poultryman of the Year, and most notably, the Gip Nolan award for Outstanding Community Service. Colleagues called him "peppy", not only because of his initials, but because of his boundless energy and enthusiasm.

A hard worker who paid great attention to detail, Phil enjoyed crunching numbers. He volunteered as treasurer at numerous organizations, including his church and the American Legion.

But Phil felt especially honored to have served the City of Brookings, first as a member of the Planning Commission for 13 years, and later as a Brookings City Commissioner, where he oversaw the finances for the development of the Swiftel Center and the expansion of the Brookings Public Library.

Phil fell in love with Brookings and immediately adopted it as his beloved home for over 50 years. He was especially proud of SDSU, and enjoyed attending football and basketball games, and frequently followed the Jackrabbits on the road.

In his free time, Phil collected anything chicken, never missed a parade or fireworks, and spent many peaceful hours pulling dandelions in his beautiful back yard.

Devoted husband, proud father, jovial friend, energetic professor, enthusiastic community leader, tireless volunteer, Phil is survived by wife Darlene Plumart of Brookings, SD; son Perry Plumart, his wife Mary, and their three children Margaret, Meghan and Ellen of Silver Spring, MD; son Larry Plumart, his wife Donna, and their two children Jessica and Danny of Imperial, MO; daughter Rene Plumart and her husband Phil Salisbury of Golden Valley, MN; sister-in-law Phyllis Plumart of Mahomet, IL and brother-in-law Kenneth Rieck of White Bear Lake, MN.

Evelyn M. Eller
(July 12, 1915 - March 3, 2004)

Evelyn Maxine Kuchenbecker was born July 12, 1915, at Madison, SD, to Emil and Elizabeth (Beesley) Kuchenbecker. She graduated from Madison High School. She worked as a waitress at Jack’s Bar and then worked as a clerk at the Cork-n-Bottle for 45 years. She retired in 1999. She was a life member of the Izaak Walton League and a member of the United Methodist Church, Madison.

PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; one brother, Leonard Kuchenbecker; two sisters, Luella Shephard and Viola Knox; one nephew, Kevin Knox; and a special friend, Bill Waters.

SURVIVORS: three nieces, Dawn (Chesley) Foster of Madison, Judy (Joe) Linn of Casper, WY, and Nora (Darrel) Lee of Yankton and one sister-in-law, Ruby Kuchenbecker of Yankton.

Visitation will begin Thursday afternoon with the family present at 7:00 PM Thursday evening at the Ellsworth Funeral Home

Jean Dorman
Aug 9, 1925 - Mar 7, 2010

Flora “Jean” (Bell) Dorman, daughter of Clement H. and Ora Myrtle (Avery) Bell, was born August 9, 1925 in Watertown, South Dakota. She spent her early years and received her education in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School in 1943. She then worked as a medical secretary in Watertown, Denver and Los Angeles.

After her marriage to Wilbur “Jack” Dorman on October 1, 1948 in Castlewood she raised their family and also assisted him in publishing the Hamlin County Republican for many years. She was also employed as the Castlewood City Finance Officer from 1981 to 1988.

After Jack’s death on July 24, 1992 she continued to live in Castlewood until entering the nursing home at Minneota, Minnesota before moving to Morningside Heights Care Center in Marshall. She died there on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the age of 84 years.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Castlewood, the study club, Ladies Aid and the American Legion Auxiliary. Jean was a former member of the Eastern Star. Jean enjoyed doing crossword and other word puzzles and reading.

Grateful for having shared her life are four sons, Donald George Dorman (Sharon) of Cedar Rapids, IA, James Dorman (Roxanne) of Sioux Falls, John Dorman (Cheryl) of Omaha, NE, Richard Dorman (JoAnn) of Marshall, MN; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Richard Bell of Brandon, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

In addition to her husband Jack, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Donald, Roger and Owen; and two sisters, Virginia Haag and Margaret Tillma.

Interment: Castlewood Cemetery

Esther Viola Shelden
February 8, 1917 - August 4, 2015

Esther V. Shelden, 98, of Brookings, passed away Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at The United Living Community in Brookings. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, August 8, 2015 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Esther Viola Isackson was born on February 8, 1917 in Brookings County, SD the daughter of Martin and Mary Louisa (Lee) Isackson. She received her education in rural school in Medary Township and also attended Brookings High School.

She was united in marriage to Harold W. Shelden on September 28, 1935 in Brookings. After their marriage they farmed in Brookings County until their retirement in 1997. Later in life, they also became real estate developers, developing the "Esther Heights" addition in Brookings which bears her name. Esther and Harold wintered in Texas for 35 years until 2010.

Esther was a baptized and a lifelong member in the First Lutheran Church in Brookings. She enjoyed crocheting, gardening, baking, square dancing with the Circle and Swing Club and traveling with their friend in the Ring Neck Winnies Traveling Club. Her greatest joy was being surrounded by family and friends, especially hosting gatherings through the years at her homes and lake cabins.

Esther is survived by her daughter, Dorothy (Vernon) Wendt, of White, SD; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; son, David; one grandchild, Randy; one brother, Louis and one sister, Martha.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Kathleen Dochnahl
(November 18, 1931 - May 10, 2008)

Kathleen Dochnahl, age 76, of George, Iowa, died Sat., May 10, 2008 at Good Samaritan Center, George.

Kathleen Adair was born November 18, 1931, at Chicago, IL to Dewey and Margaret (Galloway) Adair. She grew up in the Chicagoland area and married Victor Schnurstein in 1950.

She married Gene Dochnahl on July 15, 1964 at Maywood, IL. The couple later moved to George, IA, where she worked as a cook a the Good Samaritan Center for 25 years. Kathleen was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in George.

PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents.

SURVIVORS: her husband Gene Dochnahl of George, IA; four children, Michael (Susan) Schnurstein of Aurora, CO, Kathy Graack of Sioux Falls, Robert (Renee) Schnurstein of Worthington, MN and Geffrey Dochnahl of George; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Dr. John Adair of Modesto, CA and Robert Adair of Versailles, MO; and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation.

Interment: Graceland Cemetery, Madison, South Dakota

Cathy Jo Swartos
April 9, 1951 - June 29, 2015

Cathy J. Swartos, 64 of Volga, SD, passed away June 29, 2015 at Brookings Health System, Brookings, SD. Memorial Services have been set for 10:30am Friday, July 3, 2015 at First Lutheran Church, Volga, SD. Visitation will be from 9:00am Friday, July 3, 2015 until the time of the memorial service at First Lutheran Church, Volga, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to First Lutheran Church, Volga, SD.

Cathy Jo Purrington was born on April 9, 1951, the daughter of William and Ruth (Larson) Purrington. She attended school in DeSmet and graduated from DeSmet High School in 1969. She then continued her education at Northern State University.

She was united in marriage to Steve Swartos and to this union they were blessed with four children.

Cathy was employed in the banking industry for 31 years, retiring in 2011. She was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Volga. She was an avid SDSU Jackrabbit fan.

Cathy enjoyed the time she got to spend with her children, grandchildren, and friends. You could always find her at a sporting event watching her children participate. She loved her six grandchildren dearly.

Cathy is survived by her husband, Steve; one daughter, Ann Swartos, of Volga, SD; three sons, Paul (Kelly) Swartos, of Altoona, WI, Daniel (Maria) Swartos, of Salem, SD, and Collin (Angela) Swartos, of Elk Point, SD; six grandchildren, Bennett, Sydney, Andrew, Campbell, Jude, and Alec; stepfather, Jim Klinkel, of DeSmet, SD; five sisters, Jan (Dale) Knorr, of Palm Desert, CA, Marnell (Doug) Anderson, of Lake Stevens, WA, Bonnie Purrington, Mesa, AZ, Dawn Klinkel, Denver, CO, and Joan Klinkel, Jensen Beach, FL; and one brother, Bill (Linda) Purrington, of Brookings, SD.

Cathy was preceded in death by her parents, William and Ruth; and her father and mother-in-law, Gordon and Dorothy Swartos.
