Lorraine Frieda Helen Langner
November 21, 1926 - August 13, 2015
Lorraine Frieda Helen Langner, 88, of Brookings, SD, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the Neighborhoods at Brookview, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services have been set for 1:00pm Monday, August 17, 2015 at First Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 3:00pm to 6:00pm Sunday, August 16, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be directed to First Lutheran Church, Brookings, SD.
Lorraine Frieda Helen Heyer was born on November 21, 1926, in Faribault, MN, the daughter of John and Lillan (Kuntze) Heyer.
As a child, Lorraine grew up on the campus of the School for the Deaf in Faribault, MN. She was fluent in American Sign Language. She attended school in Faribault and graduated high school in 1944. She worked in the telephone office before moving to Brookings.
Lorraine was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Langner on March 14, 1948.
They farmed north of Brookings where they raised their four children. After the children were grown, she went to work as a baker at the Brookings Public Schools. She worked there until she turned 80. During those years, she attended summer school and received her certificate in cooking and baking. She was known for her "Overnight" fresh buns and always having cookies, pies or a dessert to feed anyone who stopped. She continued this habit until entering assisted living.
She was an active member of First Lutheran Church of Brookings. She served as a Sunday school teacher, wedding circle committee and 40 years on the funeral committee, serving lunches for funerals. She was a member of FLCW, the social time club and extension club.
Lorraine is survived by her children, Carol (Gary) Dusharm, Ron (Linda) Langner, Sharon (Gordon) Bortnem, Kathy (Mike) McClemans all of Brookings, SD; nine grandchildren, Jeremy (Katie) Dusharm of St. Paul, MN, Daryl Dusharm of Elkton, Chad (Tammy Reese) Bortnem of Brookings, SD, Shawn (Christa) Bortnem of Brookings, SD, Mike (Vicki) Langner of San Jose, CA, Darci (Rick) Granum of Sommerset, SD, Liz McClemans of Brookings, SD, Robb (Cassie ) McClemans of Yankton, SD and Laura (Oto) Oseniek of Brookings, SD; eleven great-grandchildren; one sister, Lois Aune of Chisago, MN; two sisters-in-law, Lois Heyer of Albany, NY and Ruth Olson of Volga, SD and special friends, Shirley Rykhus of Brookings, SD and Jan Livingston of Brookings, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Robert; one sister, Marion Fisher and one brother, Howard.
Judith Chleborad
August 1, 1934 - June 20, 2015
Judith M. Chleborad, 80, of Sun City, AZ, formerly of Brookings, SD, died peacefully in her home on June 20, 2015. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home.
Judith Huffman was born August 1, 1934 in St. Louis to Elmer and Mildred Huffman, and grew up in the Wichita, KS area. After graduating from high school, she attended Doane College in Crete, NE.
At Doane, she met her husband, Don Chleborad. On June 1, 1958 the two were married, and resided in Lincoln, NE, while Don finished dental school.
Following dental school, the couple moved to Mt. Home, ID, with the U.S. Air Force, where Don practiced his first dentistry. While in Mt. Home, Judy gave birth to two boys, Thomas in 1961, and Donald (Scott) in 1962.
After completing the Air Force duty, they learned that the city of Watertown was in need of a dentist, and drove from Lincoln to determine if this might be a good fit. On the way they got caught in a storm, and took a motel room in Brookings. Upon seeing the town in the morning, the couple decided they didn’t need to go any farther and set up shop in Brookings, where they lived for the next 40 years.
As they approached retirement, Judy and Don began spending part of each winter in Sun City, AZ and moved there full-time in 2003.
Judy made a career as a science and fifth grade teacher at Hillcrest Elementary in Brookings. She enjoyed gardening, entertaining, and spending time at the lake. She was also an avid golfer, with seven holes in one to her credit.
She is survived by her sons, Tom of Sioux Falls and Scott (Jeanne) of rural Canton; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and her companion, RG Ellington of Sun City, AZ.
Judy was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, and her sister, Elizabeth.
Selma Esther Hieb
October 9, 1921 - August 4, 2015
Selma (Sally) Esther Tieszen Hieb passed away on Tuesday, August 04, 2015 at the United Living Community in Brookings, SD, at the age of 93. Sally was born October 9, 1921 in Marion, SD, to Dr. Isaac P. and Katie (Graber) Tieszen. She had three older siblings (Ewalt, Lillian and Albert) and three younger siblings (Delsie, Helen, and Ruby). She grew up in South Dakota, attending Marion High School, Freeman Junior College, and the University of South Dakota. Her extended family was nearby and was very dear to her.
On May 31, 1942 she married Wilbert (Bill) Edgar Hieb, also from Marion, at Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, Freeman, SD.
They lived in several different places during the early years of their marriage—Vermillion, SD; St. Louis, MO, while Bill was in medical school; and then Germany, immediately after World War II. Sally and their 2-year-old son, Barry, traveled to Bad Wildungen, Germany in 1946, where Bill was stationed as a physician with the Army Medical Corps. Son Jim was born in Germany in 1947, and in 1948, the family returned to Marion, South Dakota. Bill had a medical practice in Marion, and Sally was a homemaker who thoroughly enjoyed her young family; which grew to four sons with the addition of Charles and Richard. In 1954, the family moved to Henderson, Nebraska, where Bill continued his medical practice.
Throughout her life Sally loved to serve as a hostess, entertaining visitors of all ages and walks of life, in their beautiful home. She was an excellent cook, who loved to cook traditional foods, as well as Korean and Japanese dishes. Sally enjoyed humor and practical jokes, and laughter was a constant feature of their home. She knitted beautifully, and gave many hand-knit gifts to family and friends. Both she and Bill had a deep appreciation for the church and for good music, as well as emphasizing the importance of education. During Barry’s college years, Barry brought home his good friend, Shingo Kajinami, who was warmly welcomed into the family, increasing the family of 4 sons to 5 sons.
Sally was a faithful Mennonite and active church choir member, both at Salem Zion Mennonite Church in Freeman and at Bethesda Mennonite Church in Henderson. Sally and Bill were instrumental in procuring a new pipe organ for Bethesda.
Sally was a lifetime member of AHSGR (American Historical Society of Germans from Russia), celebrating her roots as a descendant of Germans from Russia. She translated German stories into English for the AHSGR publications, and served capably as president of the organization for two years.
After Bill’s retirement in 1995, the family moved back to South Dakota, first to Marion and then to Freeman. In 2007, Bill and Sally moved to Brookings to be closer to Richard and his family, due to Sally’s advancing Alzheimer’s disease.
Sally is survived by her husband, Wilbert Hieb of Brookings, SD; sons, Barry (Fern) Hieb of Tucson, AZ, James Hieb of Tucson, AZ, Charles (Diane) Hieb of Prescott, AZ, Richard (Brenda) Hieb of Brookings, SD, and Shingo (Kathy) Kajinami of McPherson, KS; sisters, Ruby Waltner of Freeman, SD, Helen Tieszen of Sioux Falls, SD, and Lillian Glanzer of Marion, SD; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Sally was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers and her sister Delsie Bartel.
Contributions and Memorials may be given in Sally’s name to the Freeman Academy, Freeman, SD.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00pm Saturday, August 8th at Salem-Zion Mennonite Church, 27844 443 Ave, Freeman, SD 57029 . Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Kathleen M. Becker
September 11, 1949 - August 10, 2015
Kathleen "Kelly" Becker, 65, of Aurora, passed away on Monday August 10, 2015 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am Friday, August 14, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, August 13, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
Kathleen (Kelly) Marie Thielen was born September 11, 1949 in Hendricks, MN to Art and Helen (Bergman) Thielen. Kelly went to Elkton Public School graduating in 1968.
She was united in marriage to Jerry Rand in California and they had one daughter Angela Rand.
She then married Jimmie Becker on July 27, 1974 in Watertown, SD.
Kelly was employed with the Department of Residential Life at SDSU. She also worked at Jimmie’s Plumbing business and with Cesar Chavez School District as a teacher’s assistant for Special Education, while in California.
After the death of her husband on August 7, 2002 Kelly was employed again at the Department of Residential Life. She retired from SDSU in 2009.
Kelly is survived by her son, Tom of Aurora, SD; daughter, Angela Rand of Puyallup, WA; a sister, Pat (Steve) Carmon of Howard, SD; three sisters-in-law, Irene (Ed) Bain of Brookings, SD, Dorothy (Bill) Sippel of Lake in the Hills, IL and Betty (Ervin) Colbeck of Aurora, SD; two brothers-in-law, Bill (Jan) Becker of Eau Claire, WI and Larry Becker of Brookings, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Jimmie.
Helen L. Gottsleben
March 31, 1923 - July 27, 2015
Helen Louise Hess Gottsleben, 92, of Brookings, passed away Monday, July 27, 2015 at Stoneybrook Suites, in Brookings. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Tuesday, August 4, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Monday at Rude’s Funeral Home with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 6:30 pm.
Helen Louise Hess was born on March 31, 1923 in Clark County, South Dakota the daughter of Peter and Laura (Bickett) Hess. Helen attended grade school at Hess School and attended Junior High at Mobridge, SD. She graduated from Clark High School in 1940. She continued her education at the South Dakota Beauty Academy in Sioux Falls and graduated in 1941. She was employed at Roberts Beauty Shop in Arlington, SD until 1943 when she was appointed by J. Edgar Hoover to work in the Personnel Department of the FBI, in Washington D.C. for three years.
She was united in marriage to Bernard J. "BJ" Gottsleben on June 24, 1946 in Clark, SD.
They lived in the communities of Doland, Winfred, Montrose, Lake Preston and Brookings, SD. Helen was employed by the Lake Preston School District as school secretary from 1975 until 1984, when she and BJ retired and moved to Brookings.
She was an active volunteer in church and community organizations in the communities where they lived. She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church where she was a lector and Eucharistic Minister. Helen served as the President of the South Dakota American Legion Auxiliary from 1973 until 1974 and was active on the national level for the next ten years. She received appointments in the various programs sponsored by that organization which included National Vice President, Northwestern Division and National Field Service Director. She was involved in the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State of South Dakota for 33 years including 17 years as Director and Chairperson. She was also a Girls Nation Counselor in Washington, DC in 1975, 1976 and 1982. She enjoyed singing, spectator sports, crafts, contemporary writing, art, government and current events. She especially enjoyed attending her children’s and grandchildren’s activities in school and in the community.
Helen is survived by her two daughters, Mary Barse and husband Steve, of Norman, OK and Sheila Hazelroth and husband John, of Maitland, FL; one son, David Gottsleben and wife Helen Reid Gottsleben, of Yankton, SD; 5 grandchildren - Matthew Barse, Laura Barse Anderson, Kendra Gottsleben, Matthew Hazelroth, and Dasha Hazelroth, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Francis and Albert Hess and two sisters, Genevieve Hynes and Kathryn Heim.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the South Dakota Art Museum, 936 Medary Ave., Brookings, SD 57007.
Selma Esther Hieb

Thomas J. Aulner Sr.
January 17, 1963 - November 12, 2015
Thomas J. Aulner, Sr. 52, of Brookings, passed away peacefully at Dougherty Hospice House on Thursday, November 12, 2015 in Sioux Falls, SD. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm Monday, November 16, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Thomas J. Aulner was born on January 17, 1963 in Brookings, SD, the son of Donald and Clarice (Westley) Aulner. He received his education in Brookings and graduated from Brookings in 1982.
He was married to Theresa Krier in 1983. Tom’s first job was at Artic Circle and was later employed at Daktronics and Midtex. He later owned and operated Aulner’s Pizza King and Brookings Taxi and spent his later years catering.
He was married to Sherrie Mohror in 1991.
Tom was an avid bowler, taking part in many leagues. He also enjoyed playing pool and fishing, often times taking his nieces and nephews with him. He followed racing and attended many races, an activity he loved taking his kids along to watch.
He is survived by his three children, Thomas J. Aulner Jr., of Aurora, SD, Tennille Freeman, of Brookings, and Shelby (Ethan) Fonder, of Badger, SD; three grandchildren Ethan, Bennett, and Madisyn Freeman; one brother, Terry Aulner, of Brookings, SD; two sisters, Denise (Joe) Avila, of Evans, CO and Nancy (Dannie) Christie, of Brookings, SD and several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donnie and Mark.
