Patricia A. Arbuthnot
January 26, 1931 - April 25, 2018

Patricia ‘Pat’ Arbuthnot, formerly of Huron, SD, was born on January 26, 1931; at the age of 87, passed peacefully at The Neighborhoods At Brookview on April 25, 2018.

Pat is survived by her husband, Gene; five children, Mark (Linda), Dave (Sue), Becki Manchester (Mike), Shelly Braley (Steve) and Rick (Alicia); 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

No services are planned at this time. Interment will be at Cedardale Cemetery in Papillion, NE at a later date.

Dennis R. Johnson
April 28, 1946 - April 29, 2018

Dennis R. Johnson, 72, of Volga, passed away Sunday, April 29, 2018 at The Neighborhood’s at Brookview, in Brookings. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Friday, May 4, 2018 at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings.

Dennis Ray Johnson was born April 28, 1946 in Volga, SD to Don and Cecilia Johnson. He graduated from Oldham High School in 1964 and Lake Area Vo Tech with an aviation mechanic degree.

Dennis was united in marriage to Nancy Pickering on February 12, 1965. She passed away November 14, 2009 after being married for nearly 45 years. They lived briefly in Madison, Watertown, the Twin Cities and Brookings before moving to their permanent home in Volga in 1974 where they raised their two children, Charlotte and Stephen, and was currently enjoying his retirement.

Dennis was employed as an airplane mechanic in Minnesota for Western Airlines. He then joined the 3M Company in Brookings and retired in 2006 after 34 years of employment in the plant engineering department.

Dennis was dedicated to his family, friends and his job. He enjoyed spending time with his two grandsons (Jacob and Ben), traveling, riding his Harley, camping, walking, attending sporting events, doing yard work and having coffee with his friends each day. He also was a member of the Volga Chairs of Hope restoring old wheelchairs. Dennis was quiet, kind and always took the role as caregiver to others. He never complained and enjoyed the simple things in life while watching wildlife, the moon, and especially his daily walks.

Dennis and Nancy enjoyed many vacation travels while raising their family. Later, as the family left home they continued their travels visiting grandchildren, and spending winters in Arizona. Their favorite vacation spot was the Black Hills.

Survivors include his daughter, Charlotte (Barry) Kempfert, Hudson, WI and son, Stephen (Patricia), Howard Lake, MN. He is also survived by two grandsons, Jacob and Benjamin (girlfriend Jenn Crawford) Kempfert; one brother, Dean (Mary) Johnson; one sister, Kathy (Lonnie) Holt; brothers-in-law, Keith (Jane) Pickering and Don Pickering; sisters-in-law, Joyce Pickering, Mary (Tom) Nemitz, Deb (Paul) Courteau, Linda (David) McGirr and several nieces, nephews and several true friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy, daughter, Sheila; parents Don and Cecelia Johnson; brothers, Larry, Jerry, and Eugene and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Wilfrid and Velma Pickering.

Debra L. Archer
March 24, 1957 - April 30, 2018

Debra L. Archer, 61, of Brookings, SD passed away Monday, April 30, 2018. Memorial Services have been set for 10:30am Saturday, May 12, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, Brookings, SD. Memorial Visitation will be from 9:30am until the time of services at the church. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Debra Archer, the daughter of the Late Clyde and Geneva (Hawley) Archer, was born in Brookings, SD on March 24, 1957. Deb grew up on a farm near Estelline, SD, and attended school and graduated from Estelline High School in 1975. Deb attended Nettleton College in Sioux Falls. Upon graduating she began a long working career in Brookings. She first worked for Langland Appliances, then at a couple of banks before starting her 32-year career at South Dakota State University, were she held various positions. She retired in 2016 and enjoyed many hobbies of traveling, reading, cross stitching, crocheting and learned how to quilt.

She was an active and faithful member of First United Methodist Church, where she served on several committees and held multiple offices. She volunteered serving meals, singing and quilting. Deb also served on multiple community boards, including the library, GFWC and the Jaycees, where she served as President for one year.

Deb is survived by her sister, Myrna (Vic) Schamber, several cousins, 2 aunts, and a host of friends.

Deb was preceded in death by her parents, brother Gale and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Leroy D. Voss
June 22, 1944 - July 10, 2018

Leroy D. Voss, 74, of Brookings, passed away Tuesday, July 10, 2018 at the Avera Heart Hospital of South Dakota, in Sioux Falls, SD. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:30 Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Tuesday at GracePoint Wesleyan Church. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Leroy’s family requests that all who attend come casually dressed to remember Leroy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Pink Ladies, PO Box 826, Brookings, SD 57006.

Leroy David Voss was born on June 22, 1944, in Anoka, MN, the son of Arthur and Esther (Steinberg) Voss. The family moved to Brookings when he was a young age and received his education in Brookings and graduated from the school of hard knocks. He started working full-time at the age of 13, working as a mason tender for his father. He was united in marriage to Shirley Cameron on January 26, 1963, in Pipestone, MN. Leroy went into the construction field, working for Mills Construction and Sheesley Mechanical before beginning Voss Construction in the early 70s. On nights and weekends, Leroy raised cattle and sold fireworks during the summer. He started Courtesy Plumbing in the early 80s and later turned the company over to his partner when he and Shirley moved to Colorado to work for Sheesley Mechanical again. The couple returned to Brookings and he started Brookings Plumbing and Heating and acquired Brookings Fireworks.

Leroy dedicated his life to his work and his family. Over the years Leroy and Shirley lived in 67 homes in Brookings, either building or remodeling the homes, before moving on to the next. Leroy enjoyed racing earlier in life and building street rods later in life. He loved driving the country side, just to see what had changed or what was new around town. He held a great memory and would always reminisce about one of the houses he built or remodeled. He was extremely knowledgeable and even to the end, would get phone calls seeking advice on certain projects.

Grateful for having shared his life is his wife of 55 years, Shirley Voss, of Brookings, SD; three children, Todd Voss, Kristi (Tim) Houtman and Jason Voss, all of Brookings, SD. eight grandchildren, Nicholas H, Nick P, Kalani, Sajen, Emily, Katera, Hallie, Ashton; two brothers, Doug (Kathy) Voss, of Colorado Springs, CO and Gary (Shirley) Voss, Tremonton, UT; two sisters, Jeanette Huffman and Sherrie (Steve) Hougland, all of Brookings, SD and a host of relatives.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Duane Lowell Allison
March 27, 1949 - June 26, 2018

Duane Lowell Allison, 69, of Brookings SD passed away Tuesday June 26th 2018. Memorial services have been set for 10:00 am Friday July 6th at First Lutheran Church, Brookings SD. Memorial visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Thursday July 5th 2018 at Rude's Funeral Home, Brookings SD.

Duane was born March 27th 1949 in Volga SD the son of Lynn and Lila (Thompson) Allison. Duane graduated from Brookings High School in 1967. He attended Wahpeton Trade School. Then Duane transferred to Northern State College, Aberdeen SD. He graduated with a BA in Education. He worked for several years in lumber sales in Colorado and South Dakota. He later pursued a degree in Occupational Therapy and graduated from the University of North Dakota. He worked as an Occupational Therapist for many years at the Veterans Hospital in Sioux Falls SD. Duane retired in 2013 from the VA Hospital.

Duane enjoyed hunting, fishing, and Blue Grass Music. He traveled extensively. Many of his travels were related to his interest in history. He was a member of First Lutheran Church. Duane was a member of the Gideon Society. He led Bible studies in prisons. Duane was an active member and a past president of the Sons of Norway.

He is survived by his sisters Marilyn Gisi (Andrew) and Sheryl Allison of Topeka Ks and a brother Gary Allison (Terri) of Quinn SD. He is survived by four nephews, two nieces, and five great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents a nephew Drew and niece Sarah.

Rodney M. Murfield
September 26, 1916 - July 2, 2018

Rodney M. Moorfield, 101, of Brookings, passed away Monday, July 2, 2018 at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm Monday, July 9, 2018, at First Lutheran Church, in Volga. Visitation will be from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm Sunday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Rodney M. Murfield was born on September 26, 1916 in Brookings, SD, the son of Gilbert and Erhmel (Robinson) Murfield. Rodney attended school in Afton Dist. #13 in Brookings County and Graduated from Brookings High School in 1934. He was united in marriage to Marjorie Quissel on November 13, 1937, in Flandreau, SD. After their marriage, they lived in Sioux City, IA for one year, before moving to a farm in Afton Township, in Brookings County. They farmed from 1944 until his retirement in 1977. Marjorie died on February 21, 1995 in Brookings. Rodney married Edith Thompson on July 18, 1996 in Volga, SD. Edith died on May 11, 2009.

Rodney was a member of First Lutheran Church in Volga, the Golden K, the Volga Lions Club and the National Farmers Organization since 1962. He especially enjoyed hunting, shooting his last elk at the age of 93.

Rodney is survived by his son Gary Murfield and his wife, Cheryl, of Sioux Falls, SD; two grandchildren Lori (Christopher) Bloom and Michael (special friend, Mary Jane Weber); three great-grandchildren, Hannah, Claudia and Wyatt and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, two brothers, Delmar and Kermit, and one sister, Thelma.

Neva Holter
October 28, 1937 - July 9, 2018

Neva Holter, 80, of Brookings, SD, passed away Monday, July 9, 2018 at the Brookings Health System, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services have been set for 10:00am Friday, July 13, 2018 at First United Methodist Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, July 12, 2018 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Neva Holter was born on October 28, 1937 in Volga, SD the daughter of Victor and Irene (Wilaby) Benz. Neva received her education in rural school in Brookings County, SD and was a graduate of Bruce High School in 1955. She continued her education at General Beadle in Madison and received her teachers certificate in 1956. After receiving her education, she taught rural school for several years.

Neva was united in marriage to LaValle Holter on June 28, 1957 in Brookings, SD. After their marriage she continued to teach school. She was then employed at the Bruce Market for many years until purchasing the market in 1973. They continued to own and operate the Bruce Market until 1983. In 1986, they moved to Brookings and in 1989, she was employed at Brookings Monument. Neva also worked as a Home Party Planner from 1986 until 2000.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bruce, SD and First United Methodist Women and served as the church organist for many years as well as being active in various other clubs.

Neva is survived by her two daughters, Lynelle (James) Hagedorn of White, SD and Ronda (Daniel) Bjerke of Grand Prairie, TX; five grandchildren, Stephanie (Jamie) Kerr, Ryan (Marcey) Hagedorn, Brittany (Tyler) Rainey, Brendan (Kelly) Bjerke and Brianna (Andrew) Harman; ten great-grandchildren, Dylan Kerr and Taylor Gillespie, Emily, Hailey and Carly Hagedorn, Kaitlyn and Wyatt Rainey, Jaden and Kinsley Bjerke and Nathan Harman; two sisters, Lola (Robert) Perry of Brookings, SD, Elaine (LeRoy) Misfeldt of Pipestone, MN; three brothers, Delvin (Mary Ann) Benz of Bruce, SD, Larry Benz of Norwalk, IA and Ronald (Sue) Benz of Lennox, SD and a sister-in-law, Necia Benz of Bruce, SD. Along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, LaValle and brother, Dale.

Anna G. Anderson
(October 24, 1910 - December 13, 2008)

Anna G. Anderson, age 98, of Madison, died Saturday, December 13, 2008, at Bethel Lutheran Home, Madison.

Anna G. Erickson was born October 24, 1910, near Howard, SD to Eddie & Louise (Ilstad) Erickson. She graduated from Howard High School in 1929. She worked at First National Bank during high school and after graduation. She married Arthur L. Anderson on May 3, 1930. They farmed north of Madison and she worked as a Stanley Home Products dealer beginning in 1952. In 1957, they moved to South St. Paul and she worked at the First National Bank of St. Paul until she retired in 1976. She moved to Madison in April 1977. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and W.E.L.C.A., Interlakes Senior Citizens, Needlecraft Club and Sons of Norway.

PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; her husband on May 1, 1976; one daughter Emma Louise Lauck; one son-in-law Laurence Lauck; one son Dr. Roger Anderson and three brothers, Melvin, Elmer and Rev. Arthur Erickson.

SURIVORS: one daughter-in-law Carolyn Anderson of Aurora CO; eight grandchildren, Laurie (Jim) Campbell of Aberdeen, Ron (Wendy) Lauck of Madison, Susan (David) Hageman of Ramona; Roger Lauck of Madison, Peggy (Mike) Jording of Newcastle, WY, Jon (Young) Anderson of Boonton, NJ, Heidi Colucci of Columbus, OH and Rolf Anderson of Aurora, CO; 16 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; four step-great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Gladys (Ray) Rothstein of Cold Springs, MN; Judy Zalk of Arden Hills, MN and Lucille (Herb) Anderson of Crosby, MN; one sister-in-law Marty Erickson of Elk Point, SD and numerous nieces and nephews.

PALLBEARERS: Roger Lauck, Rolf Anderson, Tony Lauck, Tim Casanova, Jim Campbell, Dr. Mike Jording
