Michael J. Myers
1936 - Apr. 26, 2017

Michael (Mike) Joseph Myers was a fighter, a rabble rouser, and provocateur, an endless font of restless, creative energy, a force of nature, a husband, and our dad. He had a hard-knock life early-on but those experiences forged a steely will to succeed, thrive, and prove to the world that he was a man to be reckoned with.

Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1936, our dad, Mike, started out young making a name for himself. He was an altar boy, a golden gloves boxing champion, and a sailor in the Navy, all by the age of 17. Mike spent the end of his teenage years peeling potatoes aboard a battleship all around Asia as the Korean War came to a close.

He attended South Dakota State on the GI bill for his first couple of years, transferring to the Business School and graduating from the University of South Dakota (USD) and began his first career as a photojournalist for the Argus Leader.

He married the beautiful Mary Ellen Schaefer (of Montrose, South Dakota) on July 14, 1962. They moved to Sioux City, where he worked at the Sioux City Journal. His superhuman strength was on full display as he became a full-time law student at USD while continuing as a full-time nighttime editor, commuting between Vermillion and Sioux City in his red Datsun 240Z.

After starting a family, three children by 1967 (Mary Beth, Helen, and Matthew), the family moved to Vermillion, South Dakota, where Dad began his first stint as a professor of law at USD and loving every minute of it. Nicholas and Anne came into our growing family during our time at the country house on the "S" curve.

Mike began his biggest career journey from Legal Counsel for Mercy Hospitals to Chief Operating Officer of Marian Health Center (now Mercy Sioux City), the consolidated entity from the merger of St. Joseph and St. Vincent hospitals. During this time, our family were proud members of Blessed Sacrament parish and school (as well as Heelan High School, Go Crusaders!), who supported our family so lovingly when we had a house fire in 1975. While we flourished in Sioux City, we added Michael and Connor to the family, to round out the crew of seven children.

Mike was a high-flier throughout his never-ending career: COO, Marion Health Center (Mercy Sioux City), Sioux City, Iowa, CEO of Mayo-St. Mary's Hospital and a Mayo Trustee, Rochester, Minnesota; CEO of Fairview Riverside Medical Center, Minneapolis, and Board Director of Minnesota Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He authored "The Mayo Clinic and Blue Eyes, " and "Railroaded: Mayo, Imminent Domain and the Unclean Politics of Clean Coal".

As things often do, Mike rounded back to USD as a professor at the USD School of Law teaching Elder Law and Health Law & Policy, including a gig as visiting professor emeritus at the University of Maastricht, Netherlands. Teaching was his favorite job by far.

Never one to be under-worked, as a professor with support from the university, he authored and originated the country’s first Elder Law Hotline (pro bono legal advice). He wrote a weekly column for the Argus Leader and other syndicated newspapers. Continuing his pursuit of healthcare education, he hosted The Elder Law Forum for many years on WNAX talk-show radio out of Yankton, South Dakota. In 2014, he ran as an Independent Candidate for Governor/Lieutenant Governor of South Dakota, encouraging everyone to think for themselves and bringing up progressive issues that no one else would touch. The other contenders dodged debates with him with reason. In 2016, he ran for the State House of Representatives in South Dakota as the independent candidate for his old neighborhood, the North End.

Most recently, our dad moved to Minneapolis/St. Paul and was enjoying life to the fullest. He lived in a hipster neighborhood with walking paths and views of Lake Calhoun, he attended weekly spinning classes, ate at great restaurants, practiced yoga and visited local Zen centers, had a weekly radio show, and most importantly, our family spent time with each other.

Mike was the husband to Mary Ellen (Schaefer) Myers, brother to four sisters: Barbara (Myers) Stitch, Patty (Myers) Wuebben, Sally Myers, and Connie (Myers) Marr-Presley, father to Mary Beth Myers, Helen Myers, Matthew Myers, Nicholas Myers and wife Brenda (Johnson) Myers, Anne (Myers) Schankula and husband Eric Schankula, Michael S. Myers and Connor Myers, and grandfather to four beautiful grandchildren: Graham, Madeline, Peter and Bridget.

Lastly, Mike’s most current radio show, Adventures in Aging, is airing four more episodes and can be heard on twincitieswellnessradio.com/content/all/adventuresofaging.

Our dad was a hard worker, a provider, a friend, a husband, a teacher, an entertainer, a fighter, and the perfect example of living life fully without boundaries. He died peacefully in his own hipster apartment, in his sleep. He was 80 years young. R.I.P. Dad.

In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you please make a donation to American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) or a charity of your choice.

Kay had that rare ability to touch and motivate people with her generosity of spirit, kindness and intellect. The difference she made in people's lives was as subtle as her wit and as strong as her intellect. She hated inequality and sought to remedy it beginning with her days in Uganda in the nascent Peace Corps to her tenure of 25 years as Vice Principal for English as a Second Language (ESL) with the New York City Board of Education.

She appreciated all cultures and celebrated their uniqueness. In the field of ESL adult education, she immediately bonded with her students, putting them at ease and instilling confidence in their abilities to become part of the American mosaic. Always interested in the capability and potential impact of the students, Kay was confident that they would transform lives and communities. She co-authored a popularly acclaimed textbook for the instruction of English as a second language for adults.

Kay was a redoubtable woman devoted to poetry. Her poems were not confessional in nature choosing instead to provide an insight to her love of people, their hopes and their foibles. Her poems were introspective and vivacious; melodious and pleasing to read. Her poems treated the reader to a clear-eyed vision of the world, relationships, mortality and the inner lives of women.

Upon retirement, Kay returned to Brookings in 2012 with her husband, Louis Quinones, where she was an active member in the Medary Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Brookings Community Theatre, the Brookings Chapter of the General Federation of Women's Clubs and St. Thomas More parish.

Among her many joys in life, was the appreciation of fine dining. She was a gourmet cuisinier who amazed those fortunate enough to dine at her gourmet suppers. Her repertoire of culinary delights from the seven continents was sustained by her love of travel and adventure. Her most recent travels included visits to Barcelona, Ireland, the Black Hills and the southeast United States.

Kay was a feminist long before the word entered into our consciousness. She was a role model by her intellect, determination, graciousness, wit and perspicacity.

She is predeceased by her husband, Louis and survived by her sisters, Carroll and Eleanor, her brother, Christopher and stepsons, Jon and Garrick Quinones.

Kathryn is survived by her siblings, Carroll Cole (Richard Sens—Castet), Brookings, SD and their son, Nicholas, Christopher (Jane Ann) Cole of Ashburn, and their children Virginia and Holly (Dan) Tronano and Patrick Cole and Ela (Randy) Roth of Spicer, MN and their children, Jessica Roth, Mahle Roth and Hank Roth; her stepsons, Jon (Cornelia) Quinones of Brooklyn, NY and Garrick Quinones of Staten Island, NY.
