Verla Evelyn Knudson
May 29, 1921 - April 1, 2017
It is with saddened hearts, we share the passing of our beloved Mother, Verla Knudson on April 1, 2017 at The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings SD.
Visitation will be 5:00pm to 7:00pm Friday, April 7, 2017 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Funeral services will be held at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville, SD at 1:00pm Saturday, April 8, 2017 with interment at Riverside Cemetery, Centerville, SD.
Verla Evelyn (Holt) Knudson entered this world on May 29, 1921 in McCook County, near Montrose SD, to Thor and Rachel (Ostrem) Holt. She was baptized on July 10, 1921 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Hooker SD and confirmed at Scandia Lutheran Church in Centerville SD in 1935. Verla was one of nine children raised on a farm near Wakonda, SD, graduating from Frog Creek School in Clay County, SD.
On September 28, 1938, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, near Wakonda, SD, Verla was united in marriage to Stanley K. Knudson. Seven children were born to this union. They farmed near the communities of Centerville, and Beresford, SD. Together they owned and operated their own business in Brookings SD.
As a devoted wife and mother, Verla worked alongside her husband during their years of farming, helping with the dairy operation all while taking care of their home and children. After purchasing the Wayside Motel in Brookings SD, she labored diligently to help make the business a success. Stanley was deep into genealogy so in 1977, their first trip overseas was to Norway with a second trip taken in 1979. Lasting friendships were formed with the many friends and relatives they met in Norway.
After selling their business in 1982, they retired to Centerville taking a third trip to Norway in 1984. Verla walked more than 50 cemeteries to help Stanley complete research to update community cemetery records. She also enjoyed time with her sisters, Thelma and Verda, as they stitched quilts together.
Verla demonstrated her gift of hospitality as she welcomed guests to her home and kept them well fed, Norwegian style. She was a thoughtful, loving, and generous lady with a wonderful sense of humor. Throughout her life, her deep-rooted, unselfish, Christian spirit was revealed by her thoughts and deeds.
A rewarding milestone was the celebration of their 75th Wedding Anniversary in 2013. After Stanley’s death, Verla continued to enjoy her home and friends at StoneyBrook Suites Assisted Living in Brookings SD.
Survivors are: children; Kenneth (Joan), James (Tyke) both of Brookings SD; Gordon (Jeannie) of Sioux Falls SD; Betty Northcutt and Gail (Steven) Monteith both of Arlington SD; brother, Gene (Bonnie) Holt of Santa Barbara CA; 17 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 9 great-great-grandchildren; and son-in-law, Bennett Nelson of Cherokee IA.
She is preceded in death by: her husband on April 1, 2014; daughters, LaVonne in 1941 and Vera Nelson in 2015; granddaughter, Jennifer Knudson in 2005; son-in-law, Woody Northcutt in 2011; her parents; brothers, William, Joseph, Orville, and Arthur; sisters, Gladys Bishop, Thelma Ward, and her twin sister, Verda Erickson.

Audrey Lamb
August 7, 1922 - May 10, 2017
Audrey Hortness Lamb, 94, died Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Hendricks Nursing Home in Hendricks, MN.
Funeral services are at 11:00 am May 12, 2017, at Rudes Funeral Home in Brookings S.D. Visitation is one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings.
Audrey Hortness Lamb, daughter of Alfred and Florence Hortness was born August 7, 1922. She spent her early years and received her education in White S.D. and is a graduate of White High School. Upon leaving high school she attended General Beatle in Madison S.D. and MSU in Marshall, MN, and received her teaching degree. She taught in various schools in Iowa and South Dakota before coming to Hendricks, MN, in 1959, where she was employed until her retirement in 1989. She was and excellent teacher and loved to reminisce about the years spent with her students and colleagues. She married Marvin Lamb and they farmed in Brookings County. She was an active member of Pioneer Lutheran Church and enjoyed cooking, square dancing, coin collecting and working in her many flower gardens.
She was proceeded in death by her parents Alfred and Florence Hortness.
Memorials may be directed to Pioneer Lutheran Church or Hendricks Public School.
Scott Michael Herreid
February 25, 1955 - April 17, 2017
Scott Michael Herreid, 62, of Brookings, SD, passed away Monday, April 17, 2017. Memorial Services have been set for 1:00pm Monday, April 24, 2017 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 12:00pm until the time of the Memorial Service at Rude’s Funeral Home. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Scott Michael Herreid was born on February 25, 1955 to Mike and Jean Herreid in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He was the second of the four boys. He spent his childhood in the Sioux Falls/Brookings area where he graduated from Lincoln High School in 1973. He attended Black Hills State University for a year and then Sioux Falls College where he enjoyed college life to the "fullest" and made many lifelong friends.
On February 24th, 1976, he met Ginny Warner while recruiting for Sioux Falls College and after which they began dating. They were married on February 2nd 1979 in Casper WY. They settled in Brookings SD where Charney Lee and Lucy Kae completed their family.
Scott spent his career in customer service including 22 years at Harold Photo, and the last 12 years at Citibank. Scott showed his dedication to customer service by providing road reports to KSOO during the varying South Dakota driving conditions.
He enjoyed golfing with the TSLTFTGAFSGL and his best friend Don McCoy. He developed a love of sign making and whittling wooden canes while dealing with bad knees. He loved to customize them for special events, friends and even strangers; asking only that the recipient make a donation to a charity of their choice in lieu of payment. Anyone who was familiar with Scott knew of his unique poetry skills, love of music and obsession with the Green Bay Packers.
He loved his children and grandchildren deeply. He would attend every school event, deliver lemonade on a hot day to Charney’s roadwork site as well as send daily cards to Lucy while at basic training. Scott was affectionately known as G-Daddy to his 6 grandchildren Tanner, Haylee, Cadance, Johnathan, Lane, and Molly.
Scott lost his battle with depression on April 17, 2017. Scott is survived by his wife, Ginny Herreid; daughter, Charney Lee (Mark) Wentworth and their 3 children, daughter, Lucy Kae (Landon) Myer and their 3 children; mother, Jean Herreid; brother, Mark (Maria) Herreid, brother, Bradley Herreid, brother, Kevin Herreid.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, Mike Herreid.
Audrey M. Wright
June 19, 1930 - May 1, 2017
Audrey Marie (Kenner) Wright, a longtime Brookings resident, passed away on May 1, 2017, at the age of 86. She was born June 19, 1930, in Huron, South Dakota; she grew up there and graduated from Huron High School. On May 17, 1951, she married Keith Kenner of Huron, and to that union two sons were born. In 1962 the family moved to Brookings, SD, where Keith started the Keith Kenner Plumbing Company.
Keith died in December of 1992. On November 8, 1997 Audrey married Ken Wright of Brookings.
She is survived by her two sons, Martin (Pam) Kenner of Burnsville, MN, and Brian Kenner of Philip, SD; two grandchildren, Patrick Kenner and Abbie (Cory) Koscielski; three step-children, Barb (Darwin) Egeberg of Madison, SD, Georgia (Bill) Kopp of Milwaukee, WI, and Jim (Nancy) Wright of Sioux Falls, SD; five step-grandchildren, Chad and Eric Egeberg, Colin and Jason Kopp, and Lauren (Karl) Ortman and two step-great-grandchildren, Jonas and Merritt Ortman. She is also survived by her sister, Stella Given, brother Jack (Jeanne) Welsh, and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Keith, her second husband, Ken, her brother, Richard Welsh, and three step-grandchildren, Johannah and Dane Wright, and Sean Kopp.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 am Saturday, May 6, 2017 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 6:30 pm.
Audrey requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Women’s Abuse Center or St. Thomas More Catholic Church.
Darlyne Fay DeKraai
September 22, 1931 - March 2, 2016
Darlyne Fay DeKraai, 84, of Brookings, SD passed away on Wednesday, March 2, 2016. She was surrounded by her loving family the days prior. Her visitation will be held 4:30-6:30 on Friday, March 4, 2016 and immediately followed by a memorial service beginning at 6:30 pm at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Darlyne Fay Lamberg was born on September 22, 1931, the daughter of Johanna and Otto Lamberg, in Estelline, SD. Darlyne attended school in Estelline, SD and graduated in 1950. Following high school, she received her teaching certificate and taught in a rural school. She was united in marriage to Samuel DeKraai on May 5, 1951. They made their home in Brookings.
She worked at Larson Manufacturing and Falcon Plastics. Darlyne was best known and beloved for the wonderful daycare she provided throughout her life. She was even watching her great-grandchildren up until her passing.
Darlyne enjoyed nothing more than spending time with her family. She loved sunny days when she could walk her beloved dog, Rocky. She enjoyed many trips to Oregon and Colorado to visit her family and grandchildren.
Darlyne is survived by her husband, Samuel DeKraai; her two sons, Lynn (Donna) of Brookings, SD and Craig (Cherise) of Greeley, CO; one sister, Shirley (Donnie) Linneman of Estelline, SD; four granddaughters Shawn (Chad) Fricke of Rogue River, OR, Tasha (David) Jones of Brookings, SD, Ashley (Chris) Cattolica of Fort Collins, CO, Elise DeKraai (friend, Mason) of Evans, CO; great-grandchildren, Jessa, Talyn, Elijah, Isabella, Grace, Cale, Lauren; and her dog, Rocky.
Darlyne was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Maxine Johnson and many cherished pets.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial in Darlyne’s name may be given to the Brookings Humane Society.
Norella J. Almos
February 23, 1923 - February 16, 2016
Norella J. Almos, 92, of Brookings, SD passed away February 16, 2016 at the Neighborhoods at Brookview, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services will be 10:30am Friday, February 19, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9:30am Friday until the time of the service.
Norella J. Almos was born February 23, 1923 in Gary, SD, the daughter of Oscar and Sanna (Matson) Almos. She grew up and attended Troupe Rural Country School, District 11 at rural Gary, SD and later graduated from Gary High School. She then attended Mankato Business School in Mankato, MN.
She moved to Minneapolis, MN, and worked for Procter & Gamble as an accountant. She finished her career at Talcott Finance in Commercial Finance.
She enjoyed her retirement years with her sister Shirley, living in Minneapolis, MN. Norella and Shirley moved to Brookings, SD in December of 2009.
Norella is survived by her sister, Shirley Almos of Brookings, SD; one brother, Aldon (Elaine) Almos of Gary, SD; two nephews, Steve (Diane) Almos of Brookings, SD and Stuart Almos of Gary, SD and her great-nieces and nephews, Jordan Almos, Riley Almos, Jayden Almos, Ryan (Dustie) Almos and their daughter, Lydia and Kjirstin Almos.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Millie (Willard) Gunderson.
Randy Lee Hook
August 9, 1976 - January 29, 2016
Randy Lee Hook, 39, of Brookings, SD, passed away Friday, January 29th, 2016. Funeral Services will be held 2:00pm Thursday, February 4th, 2016 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be prior to services from 12:00pm until 2:00pm. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. A Randy Hook Memorial Fund has been set up at First Bank & Trust. In Honor of Randy, the family would appreciate if you would come dressed in your motorcycle attire.
Randy Lee Hook was born August 9, 1976 in Huron, SD the son of Elliot David and Carolyn Elizabeth (Pitts) Hook. He grew up and attended school in Brookings, graduating from Brookings High School. Randy lived in Brookings after graduating, working at various businesses before moving to Sioux Falls and opening Turbo Tech. In April of 2004 he moved back to Brookings. Randy later opened his own car dealership, K & R Auto Sales. In 2016, Randy went to work for Twin City Fan.
He loved to ride his Harley and work on cars, he enjoyed being adventurous. He enjoyed the outdoors where he could tinker on whatever needed to be fixed. Randy loved spending time with his children, from dirt biking to four wheeling and playing ball together.
Randy is survived by his wife, Kristi Hook of Brookings, SD; his children, Ryan, Lukus, Amber, Alyssa and Gracie; his step-children, Tyler, Karter and Kali; his brother, Jeremy (Chelsea) Hook of Brookings, SD; his father, Elliot David Hook of Yankton, SD; his grandmother, Evelyn Hook of Wessington Springs, SD; three nephews, Austin, Alex and Nick and many other relatives and friends.
Randy was preceded in death by his mother Carrie; his brother, Brad; grandparents, Dorothy, Benjamin and Elliot.
Leland R. Jensen
July 22, 1934 - January 19, 2016
Leland R. Jensen, 81, of Brookings, SD, passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2016. Private family services will be held. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Leland R. Jensen was born July 22, 1934 in Elkton, SD, the son of John O. and Elna Jensen. He grew up and attended school in Elkton, graduating from Elkton High School.
After graduating, he then enlisted in the United States Army, serving from March 27, 1957 until he was honorably discharged on March 26, 1959.
Leland returned to South Dakota, moving to Brookings, SD where he worked for DM & E Railroad for 34 years.
Leland is survived by his two nieces, Gayla Hill of Lusby, MD and Diane (Bernie) Titak of Lakeland, FL; two nephews, Bernie Titak of Lakeland, FL and Cody Hill of Lusby, MD.
