Wayne M. Risty
May 28, 1938 - January 23, 2016

Wayne Risty, 77 of Brookings, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, January 23, 2016, in Sioux Falls in the Cardiopulmonary Unit of Avera McKennan Hospital. Funeral services will be held at the Brookings chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints at 11:00 on Friday January 29, 2016. Visitation will be held at Rude's Funeral Home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Thursday, January 28, 2016.

Wayne Merlin Risty was born to Tollef and Myrtle (Skattum), the youngest of five, on May 28, 1938 on the family farm located west of Sinai, South Dakota.

Wayne attended the Sinai rural school #21, graduating from High School in 1956. That summer, he honed his skills at farming by milking cows on the Sneve's neighboring farm, and the following spring helping out on the Madsen's dairy farm, performing many of the same chores until the owner regained health.

He and his best friend, John Reinhardt traveled out to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming for a summer job working in the kitchens.

Back in South Dakota, Wayne completed requirements for a mechanical degree from Southern State Teacher's College and continued using these skills for the remainder of his life, starting at the Sinai Garage, where he worked until he was drafted at the end of the summer of 1961.

Wayne went to basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado and completed the course in time to return home to spend Christmas with his family before shipping out to Vietnam in early 1962.

His mechanical talent earned him a regular position in the motor pool and also allowed him to work on transport aircraft rather than his assigned duty as a radio operator. He was honorably discharged in September of 1964.

Wayne continued to perform the mechanical work he enjoyed on heavy equipment in northern California, as well as expanding his engineering skills to include radio communication over the next few years, and finally to running a Texaco Station in Monmouth, Oregon.

From there, he built a career at Burelbach Industries, in Rickreall, Oregon, which consisted of welding, drawing electrical diagrams, equipment assembly, installation, on-site troubleshooting at plywood mills throughout the United States, and what he referred to as "computer programming" though this is open to interpretation as his computer skills consisted of solitaire and minesweeping.

It was during this time Wayne met and married Carol Wright. They bought a home in Monmouth, OR, during which time, they had their first two children.

Wayne almost single-handedly built their next home on a twenty-one acre hillside property near Dallas, OR, which, in West-coast fashion, would ironically later be converted into a free-grazing bison farm.

Five years and two more children later, he was able to move his family back to South Dakota and pursue his lifetime love of farming the land. After a brief stay on the family farm, he purchased a quarter section less than two miles from the place of his birth, where he added swine and dairy to the existing farming operation. The remaining four children were born during this period. Though farm life seemed utopic, it was deemed less than profitable to Wayne and his extra-large family, so they moved into Brookings over the summer of 1993, where he made a living and a score of friends as a skilled welder for Twin City Fan until his "retirement" in 2003. Once free of full-time employment and "mouths to feed, " he commuted to the farmstead, often on motorcycle as the most economical mode of transport, extending his passion for farming a full ten years beyond his retirement.

Wayne enjoyed riding motorcycles, including some motocross-type competitions (slowest through the track without setting foot to the ground wins) while out West, working on small and large engines around the farm, feeding back-yard squirrels, reading National Geographic and was devoted to his church and family. Always the farmer, he made it a requirement to watch the evening news to catch the weather report shortly before falling asleep in the recliner, and the Sunday church service was always rewarded by a popcorn and ice cream luncheon upon returning home. Wayne was a loving husband and father, always putting his family's needs before his own.

Wayne is survived by his wife, Carol, eight children, Eric (Jennifer), Karen Steege, Amy (Daniel) Glammeier, Carl (Larissa), Anna (Benjamin) L'Amour, Valerie (Robert) Raatz, Laura, and Julie Risty, fifteen grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews of whom his pride was evident, if only seldom stated.

He is preceded in death by his parents, sisters Mildred and Gladys (Wills), and brothers Donald and Melvin.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Farm Rescue http://farmrescue.org
