Krista Lynn O'Riley
September 9, 1981 - December 1, 2015

Krista Lynn O’Riley, 34, of Arlington, SD, passed away Tuesday, December 1, 2015 near Volga, SD, as a result of a car accident. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in Wilno, MN, with graveside services will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Canby, MN. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Tuesday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD.

Krista Lynn Sik was born on September 9, 1981 in Canby, MN, the daughter of David and Judy (Rodningen) Sik. She grew up and attended school in Canby and graduated from Canby High School in 2000. She began working at Schotts in Canby before attending school at Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls, SD. She moved to Clear Lake where she started working at Tech-Ord. While in Clear Lake she met and was united in marriage to Ryan O’Riley on September 25, 2004 at First United Methodist Church in Brookings, SD. In 2005, the couple made their home in Arlington, SD. Krista worked as a Dietary Clerk at United Retirement Center and also worked at Counter Part before going to work at Quality Tool where she was working at the time of her death.

Krista loved baking, a hobby she was very talented at and was known for her cookies. She also enjoyed reading, antiquing, and having interest in Antique Cars and car shows. Over the last four years she organized the car show at the Wing and Brew Fest at the Swiftel Center. She will be greatly remembered for her kind heart, willingness to help anyone in need and a person who was easy to love.

Grateful for having shared her life is her husband, Ryan O’Riley, of Arlington, SD; father, David Sik, of Canby, MN; brother, Michael (Kim) Sik, of Walnut Grove, MN; two grandmothers, Edna Christianson, of Valley City, ND and Lydia Sik, of Hendricks, MN; parents-in-law, Gary and Barb O’Riley, of Huron, SD; brother-in-law, Derek (Kristin) O’Riley, of Harrisburg, SD; two nieces, Michaela and Amanda Sik, two nephews, Christian Sik and Brecklan O’Riley and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her mother; paternal grandfather, Martin Sik; maternal grandparents, Herman and Francis Rodningen; one niece, Aslyn and her beloved cat Sassy.

Michael Shearer
August 31, 1964 - August 1, 2011

Michael LeRoy “Mike” Shearer, son of LeRoy and Darlene (Timmer) Shearer, was born August 31, 1964 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He grew up in Sioux Falls and Watertown. After his education he worked as an auto mechanic at Schweiger, Inc. in Sioux Falls and also worked in Grand Rapids, Minnesota and Loveland, Colorado. In the fall of 2006 Mike had a heart attack and has been disabled since that time. He lived in Oklahoma with LeRoy before moving to Rapid City in 2009. Mike and his soul mate Liz Good have been together for several years. Mike died on Monday, August 1, 2011 at Rapid City Regional Hospital at the age of 46 years.

Mike was baptized in the Lutheran faith and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He also loved music and cooking, especially grilling.

Grateful for having shared his life are his soul mate Liz Good of Rapid City; his children Angie, Amy and Aaron and their mother Cheryl Hulbert, all of Grand Rapids, MN; one granddaughter Kendra; his father LeRoy Shearer of Tuttle, OK; one sister Rose Starr of Brookings; one brother John Shearer and his wife Carlita of Moore, OK; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his mother Darlene on July 14, 2006.

Interment: Hillcrest Cemetery, Estelline, South Dakota

Betty J. Wilson
December 20, 1924 - December 29, 2015

Betty J. Wilson, 91, of Brookings, formerly of Nunda, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on Tuesday, December 29, 2015 at United Living Community in Brookings. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 4, 2016 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 3, 2016 at Rude’s Funeral Home; or one hour prior to the service. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Betty Joyce Christie was born on December 20, 1924 the daughter of Jay and Elizabeth (Carter) Christie. She grew up in the Brookings area, attending rural schools, and graduated from Estelline High School. She met Howard Wilson and they were united in marriage on February 1, 1950. They started farming in the Aurora area and started their family before moving to the Nunda area. To their union seven children were born, Charlotte, Wesley, Holly, Rita, Bradley, Delno, and Samuel. She helped Howard on the family farm and worked various jobs, including Echo in Madison.

Betty was a member of the Lake Campbell Lutheran Church. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, and crafting. While Howard was in the nursing home, she would often visit and take him on outings in the community. Howard passed away on December 25, 2010. Betty continued living on her own until declining health forced her to go into United Living Community in February 2013. She enjoyed her stay and could often be found at bingo, doing puzzles, or helping other residents.

Betty is survived by one daughter, Rita Woldt (Harley Jacobson) of Sioux Falls; four sons, Wes Wilson (Teresa Parsons) of Sioux Falls, Brad "Buck" Wilson of Sioux Falls, Delno Wilson of Sioux Falls, and Sammy (Donna) Wilson of Nunda; 15 grandchildren, Tina Wilson, Daniel Woldt, Jessica Wilson, Brandi (Aaric) Campbell, Jayme (Scott) Hix, Roberta (Doug) Jenner, Levi Woldt (Shelby), April Wahle (Aaron Campbell), Travis (Missy) Woldt, Dusti Wilson, Chase Wilson (Megan Elbers), Ashley Wilson (Harley), Ethan Wilson (Jocelyn), Josh Wilson, Natasha (Troy) Raguse; 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives.

Betty was preceded in death by her two daughters, Charlotte and Holly; great-grandson, Tucker Woldt; husband, Howard; and her three brothers, Calvin, Phillip, and Bruce.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Betty’s name to United Living Community, Brookings.

Ronald E. Loban
June 13, 1944 - December 31, 2015

Ronald E. Loban, 71, of Brookings passed away Thursday, December 31, 2015 at the United Living Community in Brookings surrounded by his family. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 pm Friday, January 8, 2016 at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Ronald E. Loban was born on June 13, 1944 in Volga to Joy and Arlene (Blumeyer) Loban.

Ron attended country grade school and high school in Bruce, SD participating in music and sports. He was Valedictorian of his graduating class of 1962. Ron attended Hanson’s Trade School in Fargo, ND mastering cars and trucks. Ron began his lifetime of work on March 16, 1963 at Dale’s Alignment in Brookings.

Ron was an avid sportsman and enjoyed hunting and target shooting competitions. He was a charter member of the Brookings Reserve Police Force and served for 25 years. He was a member of their competition shooting team and attended national events. Ron also enjoyed playing pool with friends for many years.

Ron was married to Katheryn Green on March 28, 1969 and they later divorced. He is survived by his four children, Kari Swartos, of Sioux Falls, SD, DeNay Hendrix, of Brookings, SD, Todd (Shannon) Loban, of Brookings, SD and Tami (Troy) Penrod, of Sioux Falls, SD. Surviving grandchildren are Ashley, April and Brock Swartos, Alison and Kyle Hendrix, Samantha Penrod, Lexi Loban, Justice and Jersey Sommervold and Dayton Nielsen and a host of other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Dennis Loban and two granddaughters, Ashley and Amanda Loban.

Thomas J. Aulner Sr.
January 17, 1963 - November 12, 2015

Thomas J. Aulner, Sr. 52, of Brookings, passed away peacefully at Dougherty Hospice House on Thursday, November 12, 2015 in Sioux Falls, SD. A memorial service will be held at 2:30 pm Monday, November 16, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Thomas J. Aulner was born on January 17, 1963 in Brookings, SD, the son of Donald and Clarice (Westley) Aulner. He received his education in Brookings and graduated from Brookings in 1982. He was married to Theresa Krier in 1983. Tom’s first job was at Artic Circle and was later employed at Daktronics and Midtex. He later owned and operated Aulner’s Pizza King and Brookings Taxi and spent his later years catering.He was married to Sherrie Mohror in 1991.

Tom was an avid bowler, taking part in many leagues. He also enjoyed playing pool and fishing, often times taking his nieces and nephews with him. He followed racing and attended many races, an activity he loved taking his kids along to watch.

He is survived by his three children, Thomas J. Aulner Jr., of Aurora, SD, Tennille Freeman, of Brookings, and Shelby (Ethan) Fonder, of Badger, SD; three grandchildren Ethan, Bennett, and Madisyn Freeman; one brother, Terry Aulner, of Brookings, SD; two sisters, Denise (Joe) Avila, of Evans, CO and Nancy (Dannie) Christie, of Brookings, SD and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donnie and Mark.

LaVerne C. McCarthy
March 30, 1924 - November 20, 2015

LaVerne C. "Mac" McCarthy, 91, of Brookings, passed away Friday, November 20, 2015 at Stoneybrook Suites Assisted Living, in Brookings. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday, November 25, 2015 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, in Brookings. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm Tuesday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 6:30 pm.

LaVerne C. McCarthy was born on March 30, 1924 in Heartwell, NE, the son of Charles and Emma (Billesbach) McCarthy. He received his education in Heartwell and was a graduate of the Heartwell High School in 1942. Following his education the family moved to Kearney, NE where he was employed at the Army Air Force Base. In 1947 he began his career with Northwestern Public Service. He was united in marriage to Gloria Parr on September 6, 1947 in Kearney, NE. They continued to live in Kearney until his transfer to Brookings, SD in 1956. Mac continued his employment with Northwestern Public Service until his retirement in 1986. After his retirement and until his health declined, he pursued his passion for fishing with his good friends.

Mac was a member of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of the BPO Elks #1490 and served as a volunteer fireman in Brookings for 31 years. Mac was truly a people person who liked to visit with people anywhere, anytime. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, sporting events, socializing with his coffee friends and especially spending time with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria McCarthy, of Brookings, SD; three sons, Tim (Donna) McCarthy, of Sioux Falls, SD, Steven (Dawn) McCarthy, of Brookings, SD and John McCarthy, of Reno, NV; four granddaughters, Erin (Stephen) Mohring, of Omaha, NE, Megan (Nick) Cook, of Sioux Falls, SD, Kayla (Drew) Ekeland, of Brookings, SD and Valerie(Tyeler Anderson) McCarthy, of Casa Grande, AZ; five great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Joshua and Jacob Mohring, of Omaha, NE and Madelyn and Carlee Cook, of Sioux Falls and his nieces and nephews.

Mac is preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Andrew Steven McCarthy; two brothers, Robert and Ambrose and three sisters, Loretta, Mildred and Rosemary.

Cordus L. Behrend
June 18, 1918 - November 13, 2015

Cordus L. Behrend, 97, of Brookings, passed away Friday, November 13, 2015 at United Living Community in Brookings. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am Tuesday, November 17, 2015 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be held at the church starting at 9:30 am until the time of the service on Tuesday. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Cordus Lounsbery was born on June 18, 1918 in Revillo, SD, the daughter of Chester and Anna (Rist) Lounsbery. She spent her early years in Revillo and was a graduate of Revillo High School in 1935. She continued her Education at Aberdeen Normal, where she received her Teachers Certificate. Cordus taught rural school near Revillo for two years before furthering her education at South Dakota State College with a degree in Home Economics in 1942. She was employed by SDSC at the Cashier’s Office. She was united in marriage to Clarence Brownson on June 20, 1944, in Brookings. He died on December 4, 1945 in Madison, SD. On April 3, 1970, she was married to Harvey H. Behrend in Brookings. She continued her employment at SDSU until her retirement in 1983. Harvey died on May 18, 1990, in Brookings.

She was a member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, Mary Martha Circle, Hospital Auxiliary, VFW Auxiliary and Brooking Home Economist Club. She held several offices at the church, played the organ for many years as well as taught Sunday school.

Cordus is survived by one son, Charles (Susan) Brownson, of Tempe, AZ; one granddaughter, Jessica, and two great-granddaughters, Sophia and Katherine. Also surviving are four step-sons, John Behrend, of Bushnell, SD, Philip Behrend, of Minneapolis, MN, Lyle (Beth) Behrend, of Chariton, IA and Mark (Deon) Behrend, of Brookings, SD; two step-daughters, Janet (Robert) Sweet, of Independence, MO and Martha (Tim) Soulen, of Minneapolis, MN; six step-grandchildren and a host of other relatives.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two husbands and two brothers, Kenneth and Clifford (Evelyn).

Memorials may be directed to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.

Gilbert Asp
February 14, 1920 - October 12, 2015

Gilbert Asp, 95, of Volga, SD, passed away Monday, October 12, 2015 at the Brookings Hospital. Funeral Services will be 2:00pm Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 12:00pm until the time of services at Rude’s Funeral Home.

Gilbert Asp was born on February 14, 1920, in Washburn County, Wisconsin, the son of Elmer P. and Mary (Katley) Asp. Gilbert attended rural school in Gull Lake Township in Wisconsin.

He was united in marriage to Jeannette VanKlei on February 26, 1947.

After their marriage, they lived in Arlington, SD where Gilbert was employed at the Ford Dealership. In 1958, they moved near Brookings, where he co-owned the A&B Garage until his retirement in 1991. Jeannette died on October 3, 2007 in Brookings.

He enjoyed going to auto and tractor shows, and especially spending time with family and friends. Gilbert enjoyed attending Prairie Village with his brother Irvin during Steam Thrashing Days every fall.

Gilbert is survived by two sisters, Mildred Asp of Hayward, WI, and Helen Heimrich of Clay Center, KS; three brothers, Theodore Asp, of Hayward, WI, Irvin Asp of Spring Valley, MN, Duane Asp of Hayward, WI and two sisters-in-law, Kathryn Asp of Hayward, WI and Doris Asp of Tennessee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and four brothers, Orville, Wendell, Leonard and Roger and one sister, Dorothy Asp.
