Grace L. Tangen
Jan. 5, 1921 – Feb. 25, 2014

Grace L. Tangen, 93, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014, at the Brookings Health System.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, with a liturgical wake service beginning at 4 p.m.

Grace Lucille Wilber Tangen was born Jan. 5, 1921, in Aurora, to Arthur and Mary (Maher) Wilber. She spent the first few years of her life there and then moved to the Brookings area with her family.

She graduated from Brookings High School in 1938. She attended Eastern State Teachers College in Madison, the following year and earned certification as a South Dakota teacher.

On Nov. 26, 1941, she married Orlando "Len" Tangen and they moved to Ossian, Iowa. They farmed there for seven years. They returned to South Dakota in 1949, having purchased the farm where she resided until her death.

After receiving her bachelor’s from General Beadle State Teachers College in Madison, she taught in the Brookings area until 1968 when she attended SDSU and received her bachelor’s in 1970. Then she started working for Our Blessed Lady of Victory Mission Inc. as bookkeeper and secretary for 25 years.

In 1995, she founded Our Lady Queen of Peace Books and Mission Inc. and was the owner and president until her death. The two missions printed and distributed more than 1.5 million books on Jesus and Mary.

She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church all her life, was a Catholic Daughter since 1946 and was an active Guild member for many years.

She enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, gardening, sewing, oil painting, especially family portraits, home decorating and antiques. She treasured time with her family and friends and was devoted to her faith, the Catholic religion.

Grace is survived by her two sons, David Tangen and Fr. Ronald Tangen, both of Brookings; two daughters, Cheryl Tangen of Brookings and Colleen (Bruce Reuter) Foerster, of Sun City West, Ariz.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one sister, Florence Kirby of Los Angeles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orlando; four brothers, Herbert, Tom, Leon and Charles and four sisters, Francis, Helen, Lou Anne and Virginia.

Jonathan N. Jenks
Feb. 8, 1976 – March 24, 2014

Shanghai, China - Jonathan N. Jenks, 38, of Shanghai, China, and Brookings, died unexpectedly Monday, March 24, 2014, in Shanghai, China.

A memorial visitation is from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. A sharing time followed by military honors begins at 5 p.m.

Jonathan Newman Jenks was born February 8, 1976, in Norwood, Mass., to Dr. Jonathan A. and Gail A. Jenks. At the time of his death, he and his family resided in Shanghai, where he worked as the first materials manager for the Daktronics Shanghai plant.

He graduated from Brookings High School in 1994 and began a degree program in history at South Dakota State University. He postponed his education in 1997 and enlisted in the Navy. After completing his boot camp training at Great Lakes Naval Academy, he was selected for Ceremonial Guard duty in Washington, D.C. While with the Ceremonial Guard, he participated in services at Arlington National Cemetery and the White House, and later served as a Tour Guide at the Pentagon.

After concluding his duties in Washington, D.C., he married the love of his life, Erin Hall (of Brookings) on March 6, 1999.

They then moved to Monterey, Calif., where he attended the Defense Language Institute. Jonathan and Erin were then stationed at RAF Menwith Hill in the United Kingdom.

After his tour with the Navy, Jonathan returned to Brookings in 2003. In 2004 he graduated from SDSU and resumed working at Daktronics Inc. where he had first worked as a student employee in 1995. He became the first HSPR materials manager in the Brookings factory and completed a second degree in global studies at South Dakota State University. In 2011, he and his family moved to Shanghai. His love of travel and new adventures may have come from his early years where, prior to moving to Brookings in 1991, he lived and attended school in Norwood, Mass., Unity and Orono, Maine, and Stillwater, Okla., while also traveling with his parents and sisters throughout the United States. His adult travels included destinations in Africa, Europe, and many cities and regions of China.

Jonathan had many friendships that he maintained throughout his life. His clan of high school friends remained a major part of his life years after graduation. Other associates included friends made during his military service, many individuals within the Daktronics system in the U.S. and Shanghai, the World Affairs Council at South Dakota State University, and members of the Bruce American Legion Hall. He was an avid reader, musician, skater, gardener, motorcyclist, and gamer, just to name but a few of his interests.

He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Erin, and his daughter, Brynn Llewelyn; parents Jonathan and Gail; sisters Heather (Tad) Turany of Houston, and Abigail (Brandon) TeKrony of Brookings; three nephews; two nieces; aunts Priscilla Parkinson, Miriam Hobart (Larry), and Kathi Baldwin (Ray) all of Massachusetts; and in-laws Sherri and Scott Minor of Brookings and Terry and Kristi Hall of Pierre.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and three uncles.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kan. 66675 or South Dakota Public Broadcasting c/o Friends of SDPB, P.O. Box 5000, Brookings, SD 57006.

Monica A. Phelps
(January 27, 1922 - December 6, 2008)

Monica A. Phelps, age 86, died Sat., Dec. 6, 2008, at Madison Community Hospital.

Monica Alberta Severson was born January 27, 1922 at Madison, to Martin and Emma (Hanson) Severson. She was raised on the family homestead north of Madison, attended Morrill Country School and graduated from Madison High School.

She married Ronald Phelps on March 19, 1940 at Pipestone, MN.

They farmed the Severson homestead which later became the Phelps farm. Ron and Monica resided on the farm where they raised their children and tended the land. In 1983 they moved into Madison, but continued to help out on the farm. Monica also assisted her husband with his insurance business for Lake County Fire Co. and DeSmet Farm Mutual Insurance Co.

She was a member of Lake Madison Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid, Needlecraft Club since 1940, S.O.S. Club, and Sandpiper Camping Club. She was a past member of Rebekah Lodge and was on a bowling team for several years.

Monica and Ron were recognized by the state of South Dakota in 1985 for having a Century Farm.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2004; two sisters, Marie Schaldack and Lorraine Abraham; two brothers, Harold Severson and Martin "Bud" Severson, Jr.; an infant brother and an infant daughter.

Survivors include two daughters, Doris (Edward) Hinchcliffe of Cottage Grove, MN and Barbara Phelps of Madison; one son, Duane (Kathy) Phelps of Madison; seven grandchildren, Michael (Julia) Phelps, Matthew (special friend Mary Colling) Phelps, Shelly (Russ) Thoemke, Jody (Bill) Leimbek, Debbie (Tim) Marty, Bonnie (Dave) Utsch and Kathy (Craig) Andrews; 10 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Joyce Severson of Madison and Alice Severson of Sioux Falls.

Visitation: Begins noon Monday, Dec. 8, 2008

Dorothy Rice
April 8, 1935 – Aug. 20, 2014

Dorothy Christine Rice, 79, died Wednesday, August 20, 2014, at Brookings Hospital as a result of complications from cancer.

Dorothy was born April 8, 1935, in Brookings to Jennett (Hillerud) Bauman Parker and Fred Bauman. She graduated from Brookings High School and moved to California where she worked for an insurance company.

It was there she met her husband, Eugene Rice and they were married Oct. 25, 1957.

After their son Michael was born, they moved to Houston. Dorothy worked in a hat factory and cleaned houses.

After "Gene" passed away in 1979, she returned to South Dakota and moved to Madison where she also cleaned houses. She moved to Brookings in 1990 to be closer to her son and family. She was very close with her granddaughter, "Jenny" and loved spending time with her.

Dorothy is survived by her son, Michael (Becky) Rice and granddaughter, all of Brookings; sister, Joyce Cleveland and brother Fred (Jeanine) Bauman, both of Madison; sister-in-law, Lila Bauman of Brookings and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene and a brother Derald.

Cards of sympathy for the family may be sent to 927 NE First St. Madison, 57042.

Graveside services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Terry Mertz
Nov. 19, 1953 – Aug. 22, 2014

Liberal, Mo. - Terry Mertz, 60, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2014, at the Freeman Hospital in Joplin, Mo., as a result of brain cancer.

Funeral services are at 5 p.m. Saturday at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 52 SE 40th Lane, Lamar Mo., 64759.

He was born Nov. 19, 1953, to Carl and Lucy Mertz in Red Oak, Iowa.

He married JoAnna Heywood on Sept. 15, 1979, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Terry was an employee at Daktronics in the maintenance department when he was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in August 2013. He truly enjoyed his co-workers and working at Daktronics and appreciated their encouragement and support during his illness.

He was a patient, caring and loving man. He cherished God’s word from the Bible and his relationship with Jehovah, his God and father in heaven.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnna Mertz; mother-in-law, Glenda Heywood; brother-in-law, Jeffrey (Debra) Heywood; brothers, Gary Mertz, Steve Mertz and Paul (Jennifer) Mertz and sisters, Dorothy Mertz McKinney and Pam Mertz Parker.

Delwyn Dearborn Brandon

Delwyn Dearborn, 81, former dean of the South Dakota State University College of Agriculture and Biological Sciences from 1974 to 1985, and also the former associate director and acting director of the Nebraska West Central Research and Extension Center in North Platte from 1987 to 1995, died Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2014, at the Bethany Home in Brandon. A victim of Parkinson's Disease, Del had been a patient since December 2012.

Delwyn was born in Miller to Ray and Grace (Kenyon) Dearborn in 1933.

Delwyn graduated from Miller High School. He attended SDSU and graduated with a bachelor's degree in animal science. Later he received a master's degree from SDSU and still later a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska.

Del's military life began with his college life, he was a member of ROTC for four years. He was called to report to basic training after college graduation. His first tour of duty was to Iceland, offering protection to an Air Force base. He served two years in the Army from 1954-1956.

After the Iceland tour, Del came home on leave to marry Ramona Richter from Colman. They have three children and two grandchildren. Lori and her daughter, Skye of Sioux Falls, Charles of Sioux City, Iowa, and his daughter Paige of Omaha, Neb. David, the youngest lives in Lincoln, Neb., Ramona resides in Brandon.

Del's work was serving the agricultural population of South Dakota and Nebraska. The Extension work and education from these two Land Grant Institutions gave him great pride as well as challenges and opportunities. The last request from the University of Nebraska was that Del return to Lincoln to assume the responsibilities of the Nebraska 4-H leader for a couple of years. It turned out to be the most enjoyable in his career.

He is survived by two older sisters, Shirley Williams of Mobridge and Beverly Sorensen formerly of Wessington Springs, currently living at Bethany Meadows in Brandon.

He was preceded in death by his older brother Dwight.

A memorial service is at noon Thursday at Barnett-Lewis Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, preceded by visitation at 11 a.m.

Sylvia Archer
Jun 19, 1930 - Jan 17, 2009

Wilhelmina “Sylvia” (Kalsbeck) Archer, daughter of Garrit and Kathryn (Katze) Kalsbeck, was born June 19, 1930, in Hamlin County, South Dakota. She received her education in rural school district # 6 and graduated from Estelline High School in 1948. Sylvia was united in marriage to Russell Archer on March 3, 1949, in Estelline. After their marriage they lived in Washington for five years and then moved back to Hamlin County where they farmed for 10 years. In 1967 they moved to White Salmon, Washington where they lived until returning to Estelline in 1972. From 1972 to 1983 she was employed as a cook and waitress at Harold’s Café in Estelline. She then worked at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center as a dietary aid for over 20 years. She died on Saturday, January 17, 2009, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown at the age of 78 years, 6 months and 20 days.

Sylvia was a member of the United Church of Christ and the American Legion Auxiliary in Estelline. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening and camping.

Grateful for having shared her life are her husband Russell of Estelline; one daughter, Kathleen Archer of Ramona, SD; one son, Gregory Archer and his wife LeeAnne of Castlewood; three grandchildren, Eric DeKam and Katie and Lyndsey Archer; one brother, Marvin Kalsbeck and his wife Janet of Big Stone City, SD; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by one son, Randy, her parents, and two brothers, Milo and Arnold Kalsbeck.

Visitation: 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM Tuesday at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline.

Clara Hegg
April 26, 1912 – Aug. 28, 2014

Clara Hegg, 102, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2014, at the United Living Community in Brookings. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will take place at 9:30 a.m. preceding services at the church.

Clara Helen Lunden was born April 26, 1912, to Ludvig and Tilda (Olson) Lunden at their farm near Toronto. She graduated from Toronto High School and attended Augustana College where she received her elementary teaching certificate. She taught four years in the rural Longman School in Deuel County and three years at Toronto.

Clara married Johan Hegg in 1939. They raised their four children on the family farm near Brookings and continued farming until 1973, when they moved into Brookings. Clara was an excellent cook and frequently entertained family and friends. Her family especially relished her wonderful Sunday dinners, which often featured sour cream raisin pie. Clara spent many hours crocheting colorful blankets for each of her children and grandchildren. Her grandchildren fondly remember playing fast-paced, rowdy games of Rummy 500 with her.

Clara enjoyed playing an active role in the community. A member of First Lutheran Church, she taught Sunday school, quilted for missions, and visited elderly church members at their homes. She actively supported her children in 4-H and became a 4-H leader. She was a member of Sterling Extension Club, the hospital auxiliary, Civic League and Sons of Norway.

She is survived by her daughter, JoAnn Weiland of St. Cloud, Minn.; her son James (Suzanne) of rural Brookings; her daughter-in-law, Betsy Hegg of Arlington, Va.; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her sons Richard and Larry, and four brothers and three sisters.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be given in Clara’s name.
