Ellen O. Straw
(June 10, 1907 - January 12, 2004)
Ellen O. Straw, age 96, of Madison, SD, died Monday, January 12, 2004, at Beverly Healthcare, Madison.
Ellen Olive Getty was born June 10, 1907, at Chester, SD, to Arthur and Helen Leone (Jones) Getty. She graduated from Chester High School and attended Eastern Normal College for one year.
She married Thomas Straw on October 1, 1929, at Madison.
They farmed in Lake County for several years before moving into Madison. She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene where she received a distinguished service award.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; her husband in 1991; three sons, Thomas, Ernest and Roger; one grandson, Terry Severtson; two brothers, Elmer Getty and Johnny Getty; and one sister, Bessie Phipps.
SURVIVORS: five daughters, Ruth (Marvin) Bagley of Madison, Wilda Severtson of Brandon, SD, Virginia Kaufman of Kent, WA, Mary (Gordon) Boe of North Wales, PA, and Carol (Charlie) Clark of Vermillion, SD; one half-sister, Pearl White of California; 16 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will begin Wednesday afternoon with the family present at 7:00 PM Wednesday evening at the Ellsworth Funeral Home

Ruth Ebbers
April 27, 1927 – Aug. 27, 2014
Castlewood - Ruth Ann (Hulscher) Ebbers, 87, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2014, at Prairie Lakes Hospital in Watertown.
Ruth Ann (Hulscher) Ebbers, daughter of John F. and Hildegard E. (Kranz) Hulscher, was born April 27, 1927, at Goodwin. She received her education at Holy Rosary in Kranzburg and graduated from Goodwin High School. After receiving her education she was employed at various jobs.
Ruth married Paul Ebbers on Jan. 3, 1961, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Kranzburg. After their marriage, they farmed near Dempster.
Paul died Sept. 14, 1995. Ruth stayed active on the farm with Keith and Joe and enjoyed traveling with friends on bus trips to many places.
She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Estelline and was active in Altar Society, the church council and served as a lector. Ruth was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary No. 184 and the Red Hat Society. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, traveling and especially spending time with her family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter Janet Schultz of Watertown; five sons, Dennis of Sioux Falls, David (Rochelle) of Watertown, Donald (Kari) of Clear Lake, Keith of Castlewood and Joe (Kristy) of Bruce; 16 grandchildren; eight great- grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Clarice Thyen of Waverly and Helen Haan of Kranzburg; three sisters-in-law, Bernice Garvin of Brookings, Louise Ebbers of Bird Island, Minn., and Wilma Ebbers of Hector, Minn., and a host of other relatives and friends.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Paul; a son, Alan; a granddaughter, Melissa and two brothers, Robert and John, Jr.
Funeral services are at 10 a.m., Tuesday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Estelline.
Visitation is Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the church with a scripture service to follow at 7 p.m.
Geise Funeral Home of Estelline is in charge of arrangements.
John W. Staup
(June 17, 1911 - April 24, 2008)
John W. "Jack" Staup, age 96, of Madison, South Dakota, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, at Madison Community Hospital.
John W. Staup was born June 17, 1911, at Jamestown, Pennsylvania, to Howard and Edith (Brest) Staup. He lived most of his life in western Pennsylvania receiving his elementary education in Jamestown and graduating from Slippery Rock High School. He furthered his education at Slippery Rock University.
On May 5, 1934, he married Mary Morton, daughter of Grant and Bessie Morton, of Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania. They had one child.
In 1974, he retired from the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad. Jack was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Madison.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: his parents; his wife in 2000; one brother Clarence Staup and one sister Florence Staup Varnum.
SURVIVORS: include one daughter, Susie (Dr. Ralph) Wagoner of Lake Madison; two grandchildren, Amanda (Craig) Entwistle and Joe Wagoner; and one great-granddaughter, Grace Howell Wagoner.
MEMORIALS: In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Bethel Lutheran Home Foundation
There will be no visitation.

Elmer H. ‘Bud’ Weisser
Sept.18, 1928 – Aug. 29, 2014
Elmer H. "Bud" Weisser, 85, died peacefully Friday, Aug. 29, 2014, at the United Living Community in Brookings.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday with a wake service at 6:30 p.m., at Eidsness Funeral Homein Brookings.
Elmer "Bud" Weisser was born Sept. 18, 1928, in Melrose, Minn., to Fritz (Fred) Weisser and Marion (Mary) (Schneider) Weisser. He attended school in Melrose and graduated in 1946. After graduation, Elmer joined the Army and served in the occupational forces in Japan. He later graduated from St. Cloud State with a degree in education and coaching.
Elmer married Marietta Love on May 9, 1953. They were blessed with two daughters, Antoinette Stadler and Mary Holtzman.
The family lived in Bloomington, Minn., where Elmer worked as a salesman for National Association of Manufacturers for 18 years. Elmer moved to Brookings in 1977 and worked for Daktronics as a salesman for 17 1/2 years. He married Dorothy Houtman Vostad on June 17, 1988.
Bud was a lifetime member of the VFW and the American Legion. He was very active in the city of Brookings and received numerous awards for his generous work and donation of time. Bud started the Leadership Brookings program and helped bring Sprint to Brookings. He served on the board for the Swiftel Center and the Governor’s Office of Economic Development and was a robust leader for the Republican Party. Bud had a special place in his heart for the Newman Center on the SDSU Campus, where he attended Mass for 33 years. He also enjoyed the SDSU football and basketball games and faithfully watched his Minnesota teams on television.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; daughters, Antoinette Stadler of Northfield, Minn., and Mary (Greg) Holtzman of Edina, Minn.; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; step-children: Rick (Dee) Vostad of Volga, Delores (Dale) Josephsen of Arlington, Doreen (Steven) Sims of Waubay, Craig (Rhonda) Vostad of Brookings, and Kevin (Ann) Vostad of Volga; special (nephew/brother) Dale Klima of Sartell, Minn.; 12 step-grandchildren, and 28 step-great-grandchildren.
Bud was preceded in death by his first wife, Marietta, six brothers and seven sisters.
Neva E. (Way) Gist
(April 26, 1899 - May 6, 2008)
Neva (Way) Gist, age 109, of Madison, died Tuesday, May 6, 2008, at Golden Living Center, Madison.
Neva E. Trullinger was born April 26, 1899, at Maryville, MO, to James and Sarah Jane (Shell) Trullinger.
She was raised in rural Missouri and married Russell Way on December 31, 1919 at Murdo, SD.
She taught school in Nebraska and South Dakota. They moved to Madison in 1945 and they lived in Sioux Falls for a few years. She was employed for many years at the Ben Franklin Store in Madison and her husband died in 1959. Neva married Ernest Gist in 1971 at Madison. She retired in 1972 and he died in 1976. She was a member of United Methodist Church, Joy Circle and World War I Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing the piano and was accompanist for many soloists in Lake Preston, Hetland and Arlington. She even played on her 109th birthday in April. Neva was the oldest resident of South Dakota.
PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: her parents; both husbands; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers; five sisters; and one stepdaughter, Jean Hamilton.
SURVIVORS: three daughters, Mary Jane Todd of Madison, Joyce Redmond of Huachuca City, AZ and Kathleen Binder of Montgomery, IL; one stepson, Jack (Sylvia) Gist of Lamberton, MN; one step-son-in-law, John Hamilton of Iowa; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Richard Lucas

White - Richard Lucas, 71, died Friday, Sept. 5, 2014, at his farm home near White.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Brookings. Burial is in Fairview Cemetery at White. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Fairview Cemetery Association or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Richard Frank Lucas was born May 14, 1943, on the family farm in Afton Township to Lynn and Florence (Michaelsen) Lucas. He attended Afton District No. 11 and graduated from White High School in 1961. He became a communicant member of St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in December 1962.
On Sept. 18, 1962, Richard married Ruth Ann Rennich at White. After their marriage, the Lucases lived in Sioux Falls, where Richard was employed as a construction worker. They lived on a farm near Castlewood for a year and a half and then moved back to the White area to farm until 2013, when Richard became ill.
Richard served on the Afton Township Board and was in a bowling and golfing league. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, visiting, attending farm and cattle sales, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Ann Lucas of White; four daughters: Carie Jean Knutson (Brad) of Toronto, Anita Ray Moore (Sean) of Plymouth, Minn., Patty Ann Lee (Kelly) of Colman and Renee Lynn Rumpza (Jason) of Brookings; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and three sisters: Elaine Straw of Astoria, Nancy Rhoads of Hobbs, N.M., and Linda (Jerry) Oines of Brookings.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Bob and Jim Lucas; and a sister, Shirley Rhine.
Lucille B. Nase
Centerville - Lucille B. Nase, 89, of Centerville, died Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2014, at Pioneer Memorial Nursing Home in Viborg. Funeral services were held Saturday at First English Lutheran Church in Centerville.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley (Teresa) Nase, Hot Springs and Ricky Nase (Darlis Aaberg) of Brookings; two daughters, Mary Lou (Michael) Rahe of Burt, Iowa, and Joann (Richard) Vesole of Bettendorf, Iowa; eight grandchildren including Zachary (Brittany) Davis and Melissa (Justin) Ochsner and their son Thaddeus all of Brookings; and three great-grandchildren.
Lawrence Eng
Sept. 1, 1917 – Sept. 7, 2014
Flandreau - Lawrence Eng, 97, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at Riverview Health Services.
Lawrence was born in Lone Rock Township, on Sept. 1, 1917, to Edwin and Inga (Ekern) Eng.
Lawrence entered the military on Aug. 21, 1942, where he served in the 3611 Ordinance Heavy Automotive Maintenance Company in the European Theater until his discharge on Nov. 11, 1945.
Lawrence married Lillian (Knutson) on July 8, 1946 in Parker.
Lawrence started Eng Services in 1934, which he continued to run until his retirement in 1994. Lawrence moved to Riverview Health Services in the fall of 2010 and loved living there.
He loved going to the Corner Cafe with friends and relatives and enjoyed having coffee and pie.
Lawrence enjoyed going to auction sales and for 20 years they had a booth at the Flea Market in Sioux Falls.
Lawrence is survived by his three children, Dale (Marci) of Flandreau; Janet (Martin) Lemme of Sioux Falls; Glen (Carla), Yankton; 12 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild and a sister, Marlys Berkland of Brookings.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian, siblings; Merle, Bob, Cap, Helen, Ella, Edna and grandson, Jacob Lawrence.
Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Burial is in Union Cemetery. Visitation is 5 – 7 pm Tuesday at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
