Milton C. Salonen
July 19, 1924 – Oct. 14, 2014
Lake Poinsett - Milton C. Salonen, 90, of Lake Poinsett, formerly of Brookings, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at his home.
Memorial services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Milton C. Salonen was born on July 19, 1924, in Lake Norden, the son of Paul and Hilda (Haakala) Salonen. During Milt’s senior year, he enlisted in the Merchant Marine and finished his senior year after World War II. On Nov. 23, 1943, Milt enlisted and went to boot camp at Sheeps Head Bay in New York City. After boot camp, he served 14 months overseas, with the Army Water Transportation Corp. He took part in the invasion of Normandy Beach. Milt was honorably discharged from the Army in 1946.
Milt married Mae J. Jager on Nov. 26, 1947.
From 1947 until 1952, Milt was employed with Antenon Construction. He was then employed with H.E. Mills Construction until 1969, when he went to work for Great Plains Lumber until his retirement in 1982. Mae died Sept. 15, 2003.
Milton was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and especially helping his sons with their projects.
He is survived by his five sons, Thomas J. Salonen of Lake Poinsett, Paul M. (Debra) Salonen of Catheys Valley, Calif., Donald M. Salonen, of Sioux Falls, Robert A. (Connie) Salonen of Brookings and David S. (Karryn) Salonen, of Modesto, Calif.; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren
Milton was preceded in death by his wife, Mae, a brother, Orlin, and daughter-in-law, Becky Salonen.
Oro Valley, Ariz. - Susie Peterson, 44, of Oro Valley, Ariz., died of natural causes on Friday, Sept. 26, 2014. There will be a celebration of Susie's life at 10:30 am, Thursday at the Faith Community Church, in Tucson, Ariz. Condolences may be sent to the family at 12444 N. Mesquite Crest Way, Oro Valley, Ariz. Memorials will be placed in the education fund established for Hunter and Zachary Peterson.
Susie was born to Stanley and Ellen (Booth) Korzeniowski on March 10, 1970 in Sioux Falls. She was the youngest of two children. They lived in Sioux Falls moving to Brookings in 1976.
Susie attended kindergarten in Sioux Falls. The remainder of her school years were in the Brookings school system, graduating in 1988. She worked for her parents and at Hy-Vee through high school. She was active in sports, cheerleading, and enjoyed spending time at the lake. She brought a smile to everyone she met. She moved to Tempe, Ariz., where she attended ASU in 1988.
In 1991, she returned to Brookings graduating from SDSU with a bachelor’s degree in 1993.
She married Pete (Paul) Peterson on June 11, 1995.
They lived in Muncie, Ind., and Clarion, Pa., before moving to Tucson, Ariz. They had two children, Hunter and Zachary Peterson, both of Oro Valley. She worked in their business, teaching at Pima Community College, and the Pima Early Childhood Education Center until January 2000, when she returned to Brookings completing her masters degree in Early childhood education from SDSU.
Her sons were the light of her life. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She was known as the 'social planner' for her neighborhood in Oro Valley.
Susie will always be remembered for her smile, quick wit and enthusiasm for life. She touched so many lives, meant so much to so many people, her passing will leave a void in all our hearts.
Susie is survived by her sons, Hunter and Zachary Peterson of Oro Valley, Ariz.; her parents, Stan and Ellen Korzeniowski of Chandler and Show Low, Ariz.; her sister Pam Korzeniowski and brother-in-law Steve Smith of Wylie, Collin County, Texas, and a host of family and friends.
Susie was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents of Manitoba, Canada.
Harold J. Boever
June 15, 1925 – Sept. 7, 2014
Flandreau - Harold J. Boever, 89, died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, at Riverview Health Services in Flandreau.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church. Burial is in the church cemetery. Visitation begins at 5 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. scripture service at Skroch Funeral Chapel.
Harold was born June 15, 1925, in Dell Rapids to Michael and Barbara (Entringer) Boever. He attended Gale Ridge Country School and went to Egan High School.
In 1947, Harold started farming southwest of Flandreau.
He married Donna Olson on Feb. 8, 1950, in Flandreau and they continued to farm.
Donna preceded Harold in death on May, 10, 2005. Harold was on kidney dialysis for the past 10 years and the past two years he lived at Sunrise Village in Jasper, Minn. He enjoyed farming and raising cattle and was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church.
Harold is survived by seven children: Michael (Karen) of Bennington, Neb., Cheryl Duinkerken of Sioux Falls, Lynn (Don) Hirsch of Cottage Grove, Minn., Terry of Flandreau, Rick (Pam) of Flandreau, Connie Boever of Brookings and Ron Boever of Carlsbad, Calif., 19 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law, Marlys Olson of Egan and Nadine Boever of Sumner, Wash.
He was preceded by his wife; a grandson, Dustin Fox; a great-granddaughter, Ella Jo Boever; three brothers, Edmund, Vernon, and Ken.
Stanley A. Corlett
June 17, 1928 – Sept. 6, 2014
Stanley A. Corlett, 86, died peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 6, 2014, at The Neighborhoods at Brookview in Brookings.
Stanley was born on June 17, 1928, in Bryant, the son of Donald and Elthida (Petersen) Corlett. He was a graduate of Brookings High School in 1946.
Stan served in the United States Army from 1946-49 and 1952-53 during World War II and the Korean Conflict. After serving in the military, he worked at the United States Post Office in Brookings from 1953, until his retirement in 1987. Stan was also a superintendent of the SDSU Post Office.
On Aug. 1, 1954, Stan married Neva Jean Walker at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. They recently celebrated 60 years together.
Stan was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Men. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, NARFE, and the treasurer of Golden K for many years. He served numerous positions in the VFW including post commander, district commander, and quartermaster.
Stan received the State VFW TGR Distinguished Leadership Award in 2006. He was also recognized in 2011, for more than 50 years of supporting VFW baseball. Stan served as a police reserve officer from 1968 until 2003. In addition to enjoying St. Louis Cardinals baseball, Stan was a fan of SDSU basketball. He spent many, many hours in the community garden where he cultivated flowers and harvested vegetables.
His green thumbs resulted in canning and sharing of his garden’s bounty with family, friends, and community.
After retirement, Stan spent his time volunteering at Brookview Manor, Meals on Wheels, various committees at the First United Methodist Church, and many other community organizations. He was recognized as the Hometown Hero from Modern Woodman, the 2012 "Friend of Baseball" Award recipient from the Brookings Friends of Baseball, and was honored by the United Methodist Women for his caring help and support.
Stan enjoyed attending his children’s activities and spending quality family time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family was very important to Stanley, where he enjoyed traveling with Neva Jean to visit with them.
Survivors include his wife, Neva Jean of Brookings; three children, Steven Corlett of Augusta, Ga., Cynthia Corlett of Lexington, N.C., and Donita (Steve) James of Columbia, S.C.; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a brother, James (Rita) Corlett of Loveland, Colo., numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family, Cindy Lou and Bill.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Darrell, and nephew, Brad Corlett.
The family requests memorials be directed to the First United Methodist Church or to a cancer organization of your choice.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home.
Walter E. Welch
(April 20, 1923 - June 16, 2008)
Walter E. "Tony" Welch, age 85, of Syracuse, NY; formerly of Madison; died Monday, June 16, 2008, at Menorah Park Nursing Home, Syracuse.
Born on April 20, 1923 in Syracuse, N.Y., he was the son of Walter J. and Helen (Hunt) Welch. He attended Onondaga Valley Academy and graduated from Colgate University in 1946 where he was a member of Phi Kappa Psi fraternity. In 1948, he received his law degree from Syracuse University College of Law where he belonged to the international legal fraternity Phi Delta Phi.
Tony joined his father as a member of the law firm Welch & Welch after passing his bar exam and in 1966, he became an Associate Attorney of the Frank H. Hisock Legal Aid Society. In 1970, Tony served as assistant corporation counsel for the City of Syracuse in addition to his private practice until he retired in 1986.
Tony remained in Syracuse for 65 years. He was president & chairman of the Central New York Chapter of the National Kidney Disease foundation, Democratic Committeeman of the Sixth Ward and Ward Chairman of the Thirteenth Ward. Tony was a lifelong sports fan. While an accident at age 18 cut short his participation in athletics, he was head cheerleader at Colgate University in 1944 and continued his enthusiasm for all sports, culminating in his becoming an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
In 1988, Tony moved to Madison, South Dakota where he made many friends and was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. During his latter years in the "Prairie State", he had Meals on Wheels delivered to him by a group of 5th graders and Tony was voted "favorite person to deliver to". Tony remained in Madison until the fall of 2007, when he returned to Syracuse.
He was predeceased by his former wife Nancy M. Scherrer, and one son, Gregory H. Welch. Tony is survived by seven children, Michael (Joan) Welch of Syracuse; George L. (Frannie) Welch of Cheshire, CT; Nancy M. (Robert) Congdon of Groton Long Point, CT; David L. (Lisa) Welch of Syracuse; Sarah C. Welch (Mark Utter) of Ithaca, NY; Martha A. (David) Bugin of Camillus, NY; Mark A. Welch of Clearwater, FL; one brother, William H. Welch of Camillus, NY; two sisters, Patricia Burke and Anne (Joseph) Taylor both of Fayetteville, NY; former wife Margie M. Beck of Madison; four stepchildren, Mike McVey of Madison, Sherri Stassi of Madison, Ted Cizek of South Carolina, Sue Cizek of Madison, and 12 grandchildren.

Nancy Lee
Aug. 27, 1945 – Oct. 26, 2014
Volga - Nancy Lee, 69, of Volga, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at First Lutheran Church in Volga. Burial of cremated remains is at 2:30 p.m. at the Milbank City Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings. Memorial donations can be directed to the American Cancer Society.
Nancy Jean Lee was born Aug. 27, 1945, to Dale and Phyllis Larson in Milbank. Nancy spent her early school years in Stockholm and Viborg. She moved in the seventh grade with her family to Brookings where she graduated from high school. She attended Nettleton Business College and worked as a secretary for a number of years at SDSU.
Nancy married Neil Lee on Aug. 21, 1966. In the 48 years together, they had three children and five grandchildren. Neil and Nancy spent 30 years in Fairmont, Minn., where they raised their children and made many great-friends. Once her kids were in school, Nancy worked for a number of years at Hy-Vee.
She loved her job and the people she met there. When Neil and Nancy retired in 2007, they moved to Volga, where she was involved with First Lutheran Church and Meadow Creek golf course.
Nancy’s great loves were her family, golf, Hawaii, and spoiling the grandkids. One of her favorite places to be was at the cabin on Big Stone Lake. Nancy will be missed by many – her smile and personality could fill a room.
Nancy is survived by her husband Neil, her three children Rick (Kristi) Lee, Susie (Chris) Hirman, and Eric (Katie) Lee; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Jennifer Denise.
Janet Maxine Adams
Aug. 19, 1936 – Oct. 23, 2014
Janet Maxine (Bichler) Adams, 78, of Brookings died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2014, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.
A memorial service is at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, with a private family burial prior to the service in Greenwood Cemetery. Eidsness Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
Janet was born Aug. 19, 1936, in Black River Falls, Wis., to Herman and Esther (Nesset) Bichler. She graduated from Black River Falls High School in 1954. Janet then moved to St. Paul, where she was employed at the University of Minnesota. While she was a secretary in the Plant Science Department, Janet met Earl Perry Adams who was a graduate student at the university. They were married Dec. 27, 1958. The couple lived in St. Paul and Waterloo, Iowa, before moving to Brookings in 1963. Earl died on June 22, 1978.
Janet worked part-time as a financial secretary at the First United Methodist Church for four years. After Earl died, she worked at Falcon Plastics as an administrative assistant for 26 years and dearly loved it. Janet retired in 2001, but continued to work for several years on a part-time basis.
Janet was an active member of the First United Methodist Church where she served in many different roles. She also enjoyed volunteering through the Volunteer Service Bank and helping with Back to School, Share the Warmth and Project Joy. Janet volunteered as a Golden Mentor in a kindergarten class where each one of the children had a special place in her heart.
Janet loved spending time with family and friends and always had time for a cup of coffee. She enjoyed playing bridge and reading. Her favorite times were spent with family and her granddaughters.
Survivors include her one son, Perry (Michelle) Adams of Flower Mound, Texas; a daughter, Jill Steinback of Sioux Falls; three granddaughters; a sister, Mary Jenkins; a niece and two nephews. Janet was preceded in death by her husband, brother and sister.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Harvest Table.
LeAnn Henslin
April 25, 1956 – Sept. 16, 2014
LeAnn Henslin, 58, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Memorial services are at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at First Lutheran Church. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at Eidsness Funeral Home in Brookings.
LeAnn Kay Tennyson Henslin was born on April 25, 1956, to Larry and Shirley (Schuler) Tennyson in Quinn. Her family later moved to Pierre, where she graduated from high school in 1974. LeAnn attended Dakota State University in Madison and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Education and Art. She later attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion and graduated with a master’s degree in reading.
In 1979, LeAnn married Steve Henslin in Spicer, Minn.
They made their home in Madison and started a family. The family later moved to Spearfish and Wall. While living in Wall, LeAnn taught school north of town and worked for Wall Drug during the summer. In 1991, LeAnn and her children moved to Brookings. She began working as a sixth-grade English teacher and eventually a reading teacher, for the Brookings School District until May 2014. LeAnn looked forward to retirement so she could be a full-time grandma.
LeAnn will be remembered for her love, friendship and her dedication to education. She loved her students and enjoyed watching them learn. She started after-school arts programs in both Spearfish and Madison. LeAnn was a talented artist and loved painting with watercolor. She loved traveling to the Black Hills, gardening, making jewelry, decorating her home and spending time with family. She looked forward to every holiday as it meant bringing the family together at her home. Everything she did, she approached with love.
Survivors include her mother, Shirley Tennyson of Brookings; children, Chris (Hanna Peterson) Henslin of Minneapolis, Stephanie (Colton Wendland) Henslin of Brookings; a granddaughter; sister, Kimarie Sheppard; brother, Tenis (Svetla) Tennyson; two nephews, Eric and Tenis; one uncle, Norman (Shorty) Schuler and one aunt, Arva Schuler.
She was preceded in death by her father, Larry Tennyson.
