Donald W. Rust

Donald W. Rust, 58, of Brookings, SD, died Saturday, January 29, 2011 at Brookings Hospital. Memorial Services have been set for 2:00pm Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at First United Methodist Church, Brookings. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service at First United Methodist Church, Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Donald Wayne Rust was born August 14, 1952 in Brookings, SD, the son of Donald L. and Leola (Mohr) Rust.
Don attended Brookings Grade School and graduated from Brookings High School in 1971. He attended the University of South Dakota at Vermillion until 1974 when he was stricken with a life long mental illness. His vision of a complete recovery was never realized.
Don enjoyed playing Chess, reading material of every genre with science fiction as a favorite. He was a fan of the Minnesota Vikings and the Minnesota Twins. He had an intense interest in politics and the struggle for world peace and justice.
He is survived by his mother, Leola Rust of Brookings; a brother, Brad (Eurlyne) of Aberdeen, SD; a step-aunt, Norma Mohr of Yuma, AZ and three cousins.
Don was preceded in death by his father, two uncles, Fred Mohr and Frederick Rust.

Merlyne Nitteberg
Feb. 24, 1923 – Sept. 30, 2014
Estelline - Merlyne (Anderson) Nitteberg, 91, died Tuesday Sept. 30, 2014, at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center.
Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline. Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline.
Merlyne (Anderson) Nitteberg, daughter of Sampson and Mayme P. (Knutson) Anderson, was born Feb. 24, 1923, in Hamlin County. She received her education in rural school in Brookings and Hamlin counties, and then attended Estelline High School. After receiving her education she was employed as a housekeeper in the Chicago area until 1942.
Merlyne married Clair Nitteberg on Dec. 19, 1942, in Watertown. After their marriage they owned and operated the Stone Bridge Resort and the Lake Poinsett Casino until their retirement in 1979.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline, was active in the Ladies Aid and the choir for many years. She was also past president of the Aid Association for Lutherans. Merlyne played organ for eight years with the Young At Heart Band and she enjoyed sewing and music.
She is survived by her son Gale (Sandy) Nitteberg of Lake Norden; a daughter, Connie Stehly of Castlewood; two granddaughters; three step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Clair on Jan. 14, 2013, a sister, Mary Salmonson and two brothers, Alvin and Leonard.
Cynthia Esther Schuett
Formerly of Brookings, SD
Cynthia E. Schuett was born on October 24, 1913 in Boyden, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Dora (Sitter) Schreuder. She died on Saturday, September 20, 2003 at the Denton Regional Medical Center in Denton, Texas at the age of 89 years.
Cynthia received her education in Boyden, IA, and was a graduate of the Boyden High School in 1932. She was united in marriage to William Schuett on February 24, 1938 in Elk Point, SD. From 1938 until 1942, they lived in Iowa. In 1942, they moved to Elkton, SD where they lived until 1952, when they moved t o El Moute, CA. Cynthia was then employed at Sister Kenny Hospital until 1959 until moving to Brookings, SD. She was then employed at the Brookings Hospital in the nursery until her retirement. William died in August of 1962 in Brookings, SD. Since her retirement she has been a volunteer in many areas within the church and hospital.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brookings, the United Methodist Womens Care and the Hospital Auxiliary. She especially enjoyed knitting, sewing and playing cards.
Cynthia is survived by several nieces Linda Barber (Joe) of Denton, Texas; Sue Arnold of Indianapolis, IN; nephew Paul Vanderburgh (Nancy) of Newton, IA; nephews surviving wife Harriet Green of Boyden, IA; and one cousin Betty Cady of Sioux Falls, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters (Elizabeth, Eunice and Lena).

Troy Doyle Hicks

Troy Doyle Hicks, 52, of Brookings, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2016, at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.
Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at GracePoint Wesleyan Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Rude’s Funeral Home is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Troy Doyle Hicks was born Sept. 11, 1964, in Brookings, the son of Doyle Wayne and Elaine Jean (Myers) Hicks. Troy grew up and attended school in Brookings, graduating from Brookings High School in 1982. He then attended Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown and received his associates degree in computer science.
Troy married Kelly Lakeman on Aug. 28, 1992, in Brookings at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings. They made their home in Brookings.
He worked alongside his father for many years in the amusement industry. Troy also owned and operated the Back Door in Arlington and then the Lantern Lounge in Brookings until his health forced him to retire.
Troy was an avid Broncos fan and took his dream trip to the Super Bowl to watch the Broncos win Super Bowl 50. He enjoyed computer games, movies, pool, darts, eating at Cook’s Kitchen with his dad, going to concerts and most importantly spending time with his friends and family, especially his grandsons.
Troy is survived by his wife, Kelly Hicks of Brookings; a daughter, Megen (Kasey) Menzel of Lake Preston; two sons, Ryker Hicks of Brookings and Ethan Hicks of Watertown; four grandchildren; his father, Doyle (Darla) Hicks of Brookings; mother, Elaine Hicks of Sioux Falls; his sister, Tina Hicks of Brookings; a sister-in-law, Stacy (David) Hunsley of Madison; his mother-in-law, Cathy Lakeman of Brookings and many aunts, uncles, cousins, two nieces, three nephews and one great niece.
He was preceded in death by grandparents, Delbert and Eulalia Hicks, Orville and Anna Belle Kingslien and Richard Myers; uncles, Doug Myers and Russel Hicks; two aunts, Lucille Peters and Verona Miller and father-in-law, Gary Lakeman.
Edmund ‘Ed’ Nelson
Lake Campbell - Edmund Nelson, 85, of Lake Campbell died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014.
A memorial service is at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Oct. 11, at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church.
Ed had a distinguished career in hospital administration and consulting highlighted by service on various church and hospital boards, and punctuated by charitable work overseas.
A graduate of the University of Minnesota School of Hospital Administration, his career included various leadership positions in hospitals and consulting firms in St. Paul and Minneapolis.
In 1963-65, he supervised construction of a hospital in Phoebe, Liberia, for the Lutheran Board of World Missions, accompanied by his wife, Marlys and his children Betsy, David and Suzie.
In 1991-92, he represented Project Hope to negotiate construction of a pediatric hospital in Shanghai, China.
In 1992, Ed and Marlys retired to Lake Campbell, where he continued working for about 10 more years with various hospitals and clinics.
He is survived by wife, Marlys; children, Betsy (David Thorson), David (Gloria), and Suzie (Steve Pagel); six grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; and sister, Martha Swenson; and many other loving family and friends.
Memorials should be donated to Alzheimer's research.
James Edward Schroeder

James Edward Schroeder, 67, of Brookings, died Friday, September 9, 2011 as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Monday, September 12, 2011 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
James "Jim" Edward Schroeder was born on January 15, 1944 in Geneseo, Kansas, the son of Edward and Regina (Friedel) Schroeder.
He grew up and helped on the family farm in rural Kansas, and attended school in Bushton, Kansas. From 1964 through 1968 he bravely served our country in the United States Navy, including a tour in Vietnam. Jim was honorably discharged from the Navy on January 13, 1968. He was united in marriage to Sherrill (Sherry) Sidwell in November of 1969.
Jim passed away, Friday, September 9, 2011 as a result from injuries sustained in a tragic auto accident, he was 67.
He is survived by his wife Sherrill "Sherry" Schroeder of Brookings, SD; three daughters, Staci (Jeremy) Amundson of Sioux Falls, SD, Nicole "Nicki" (Ryan) Bell of Sidney, MT and Jaime Schroeder and fiancé Daniel Duba of Sioux Falls, SD; 7 grandchildren, Jennifer, Bryan, Nicolle, Jory, Jace, Aubrie, Parker; Justin and Roni who considered Jim a grandfather; one sister, Betty (Maurice) Dohrman of Bushton, KS, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Patricia Steinbacher of Lawrence, KS.
At the time of his death, he was employed by TransCanada in Brookings, SD.
Jim was an avid reader, enjoyed car shows and woodworking. Spending time with his family was his greatest joy. We will forever miss his quick wit and dry sense of humor. His smile could light up the darkest of days.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the Autism Society of America.
Richard 'Dick' Anderson

Richard "Dick" J. Anderson, 83, formerly of Sioux Falls, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011. Funeral services were held on Saturday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. Burial was at Hills of Rest Memorial Park. Richard Julian Anderson, son of Ole and Marie (Dokken) Anderson, was born in Lakefield, Minn., on Jan. 10, 1928. He grew up in Astoria, where he attended school and graduated from high school and worked at the Astoria elevator until he married. Richard married Marlys L. Anderson in Toronto on Oct. 22, 1950. The couple made their home in Isabelle. Richard joined the Army and served in the Korean War from 1951-1953, where he was stationed in Germany.
Roger, Ark. - Upon his return, Richard went to jewelry school in Minneapolis.
In 1957, Richard and Marlys owned and operated Anderson Jewelry in Armour and Wagner. In 1961, the couple moved to Sioux Falls, where they were owners of The Diamond Watch and Jewelry Store until retiring in 1986.
The couple moved to Rogers, Ark., in 1994. Richard enjoyed being with family and friends. He enjoyed spending time with his daughter, Michelle, and granddaughter, Alyssa, and going on trips.
He called them his "girls." They spent time going on excursions around the Arkansas area and he loved to go to Branson, Mo., with them where they often vacationed. Reading was his favorite past time.
Richard was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers, and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. He was of member of the VFW, Elks Lodge and the American Legion. Richard was also a former volunteer with the Boy Scouts.
He is survived by a son, Mark Anderson and a daughter Michelle Anderson of Rogers; a granddaughter ; a sister, Delores (Robert) Houtkooper of Brookings; many cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of extended relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife Marlys; infant twin brothers and sister, Marjorie Sandager.
Leslie Wayne Peterson

Leslie Wayne Peterson, 93, of Brookings, died Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Thursday, September 15, 2011 at Brookings Wesleyan Church in Brookings, SD, with burial at Richland Cemetery in Mina, SD at 3:00pm. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, Wednesday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD.
Leslie W. Peterson was born on October 12, 1917, in Cartersville, Montana, the son of Ernest and Elsie (Mount) Peterson.
Wayne moved to South Dakota with his parents at the age of three. He attended elementary school in Union Township, Edmunds County and attended high school at Mina, SD. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education at Northern State College. He then served in the United States Navy and served time aboard the ship in the Atlantic Theater of War and later in the Pacific to finish his term of duty. He was united in marriage to Alma Sollie on October 31, 1943, at the Richland Church. Wayne continued his education at USDS and received his Master’s degree in education in 1961. He worked in a wood shop in Redfield for several years before he began his teaching career in various high schools in South Dakota. In 1957, he moved to Brookings, SD, where he taught in the Brookings Middle School for 11 years and in 1969, he took a teaching position at Dakota State College. He retired in 1983 as a professor Emeritas. Alma died on July 10, 2005, in Brookings. Wayne and Alma enjoyed 61 years of marriage together.
Wayne was saved and joined the Wesleyan Church at the age of 16. He was a lifelong member of the Wesleyan Church and served in many capacities. He was a member of the Brookings Wesleyan Church, the VFW, Golden K, South Dakota Education Association and the Brookings Education Association. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, painting and reading.
He is survived by his daughter Nancy Peterson, of Taos, New Mexico, his son Dwight (Bonnie) Peterson, of Connor, MT; five grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother Steven Peterson of Anchorage, AK; one special niece Ann Sollie Wine and one special great niece.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one sister Olive.
