Gale W. Archer
Dec. 1, 1955 – Oct. 8, 2014

Estelline - Gale W. Archer, 58, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls.

Gale’s memorial service is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Estelline American Legion Hall.

Gale W. Archer, son of Clyde and Geneva (Hawley) Archer, was born Dec. 1, 1955, in Brookings. He grew up near Estelline and attended school and graduated from Estelline High School in 1975.

Gale began his farming career instantly after graduation due to the untimely death of his father Clyde in 1970. Gale along with his sisters, Myrna and Deb and their mother Geneva operated the farm for many years. He and his mother always took pride in their Black Angus cattle.

When Gale wasn’t busy with his own farm, he would help neighbors, unselfishly giving his time. The highlight of Gale’s day was visiting with his many friends at the local coffee shop. One of Gale’s most admired qualities was that he never spoke negatively of others, and enjoyed watching and teasing kids from the families within the area, following how they did in school, sports, etc.

He is survived by two sisters, Debra Archer of Brooking and Myrna (Vic) Schamber of Spearfish; five aunts, Cathy Hawley of Spring Lake Park, Minn., Darlene Hawley of Lake Preston, Phyllis Archer and Marlys Kveum, both of Marshall, MN, Beverly O’Malley of Denver; and a host of other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and several close friends.

Margaret R. ‘Midge’ Stewart
Sept. 14, 1922 – Oct. 2, 2014

St. George, Utah - Margaret R. "Midge" Stewart, 92, formerly of Brookings, died on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2014, at Sterling Court in St. George, Utah.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish in Brookings. Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday with a liturgical wake service beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Rude’s Funeral Home.

Margaret R. Stewart was born on Sept. 14, 1922, in Spring Green, Wis., the daughter of Albert and Anna (Pronold) Lins.

Midge was a graduate of the Spring Green High School and then continued her education at Madison College in Madison, Wis. Midge graduated with an associate’s degree in accounting. She worked for Nelson & Foster Insulation and Roofing up until the owner was called into World War II and had to close the company, which Midge did for him after he left for the service.

She married Robert Stewart on July 15, 1944, in Spring Green, Wis. After Robert's discharge from the United States Army Air Corps, they moved to Brookings.

Margaret was then employed for David Doner in the admissions office at SDSU for two years while Robert finished college. After moving from Lake Preston, Clark and Watertown the family moved back to Brookings. Margaret was then employed for KBRK Radio Station for 18 years.

She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Parish and the church guild in Brookings.

Midge is survived by four daughters Cynthia (Dan) Tillman, of St. George, Utah, Dr. Jo Campbell of St. George, Utah, Lori (Greg) Cummins of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Linda (Zach Scifres) Stewart of Gillette, Wyo., and two grandchildren.

Midge was preceded in death by her husband, Robert D. Stewart, in 2008, four sisters and two brothers.

Emmett C. Earley
Jan. 1, 1925 – Sept. 30, 2014

Emmett C. Earley, 89, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014, at United Living Community in Brookings.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

Emmett C. Earley was born on Jan. 1, 1925, in Aurora, the son of Byran and Mary Ann (O'Brien) Earley.

Emmett received his education in the Brookings schools. He served in the United States Army from 1943 until 1946 during World War II. After returning from the military, he attended SDSU and learned welding.

He married Elsie (Clark) Iverson on April 24, 1950, in Pipestone, Minn.

Emmett then drove truck for Wilson Transfer for several years. In 1953, they moved to San Francisco, until moving back to Brookings later in that same year. Emmett was then employed at SDSU in the heating plant as supervisor until his retirement in 1985.

He enjoyed horseshoe, bowling, auto racing and especially spending time with family and friends. He liked going to coffee with his friends and always had his sense of humor up until the very end.

Emmett is survived by his three sons, Richard Earley, Emmett Earley, Jr. both of Brookings and Lyle "Butch" Iverson (Linda) of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter, Donna Anundson, of Brookings; three children thought of as their own, Tammy Nugent, Dustin and Dallas Shearer, all of Sioux Falls and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Elsie, four sisters, Mary, twin sister Eleanor, Margaret, Lorretta, four brothers Willard, Francis, Donald and John and a son thought of as his own, Warren "PeeWee" Iverson.

Roberta Elizabeth Cochran
Feb. 27, 1940 – Oct. 20, 2014

Flandreau - Roberta Elizabeth (White) Cochran, 74, passed away Monday, October 20, 2014 at her home in Flandreau. She was born February 27, 1940 at Sisseton, SD to Irene White Elton.

Roberta attended school in Wahpeton and the Flandreau Indian School, where she met Gary Cochran Sr. in 1957.

They were married on August 15, 1958 at Chinook, MT.

They moved to Flandreau where she worked at the Flandreau Indian School in the girl’s dorm. She then worked for food services at FIS until she retired in 1997. Roberta went to Haskell on December 16, 1997, where she received an award from the United States Department of the Interior for superior services. Roberta also worked at the Royal River bingo concession stand for 14 years. Her husband preceded her in death on July 22, 1998. Roberta enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her grandchildren and her family.

Roberta is survived by two daughters, Juanita Wakeman and Roxanne Cochran, both of Flandreau; three sons, Gary Jr., Flandreau, Joe, Sioux Falls and James, Flandreau; 22 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren; one brother Lyle Elton of Arizona, one sister Karen Janish of Sisseton and two half-sisters, Stephanie and Jessica of the Twin Cities. She was preceded by her husband Gary Cochran, Sr., one son Jeff, one brother Arthur Elton, two grandchildren, Danielle and Jeffrey Marshall and her mother Irene White Elton.

Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Thursday, October 23, 2014 at Eastman Hall, Flandreau, with burial in First Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00 – 7:00 pm with a 7:00 pm Wake service Wednesday, October 22, 2014 at Skroch Funeral Chapel and beginning again Thursday at 11:00 am at Eastman Hall.

Joyce M. Swift
May 16, 1926 – Oct. 14, 2014

Estelline - Joyce M. (Beck) Swift, 88, died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center.

Funeral services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Geise Funeral Home in Estelline.

Joyce M. (Beck) Swift, daughter of Ole L. and Alice E. (Nelson) Beck, was born May 16, 1926, in Estelline. She grew up and received her education in Estelline, graduating from high school in 1944.

Joyce attended General Beadle in Madison, where she received her teaching certificate and taught rural schools in the Estelline area for seven years.

After her marriage to Richard C. Swift on Jan. 24, 1951, in Estelline, they farmed southwest of Estelline for many years.

After retirement, they continued to live on the farm and she and Richard enjoyed wintering in Texas for 23 years. Richard died on April 25, 2009, and Joyce remained on the farm until moving into Estelline in the fall of 2010. She entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in February of 2011.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Estelline and was active in Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Jolly Neighbors Extension Club and enjoyed traveling, fishing, cooking, entertaining in her home, gardening and loved being on the farm.

She is survived by two daughters, Susan (David) Linneman of Bruce and Gale (Michael) Jordan of Magnolia, Texas; five grandchildren; a sister-in-law Wava (Vance) Janssen of Sioux Falls; several nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, a sister, Janet Cervik and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be directed to the Lion’s Eye Bank, 4501 W. 61st St., Sioux Falls, SD 57107.

Duane Everrett
Aug. 10, 1931 – Oct. 26, 2014

Lincoln, Neb. - Duane Everrett, 83, of Lincoln, Neb., died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2014.

Funeral services are at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, 2014, at First United Methodist Church in Brookings. Burial is in Greenwood Cemetery. Eidsness Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

He was born Aug. 10, 1931, in Lincoln, to Herbert G. and Anna (Maxon) Everrett. Duane’s professional career was dedicated to promoting educational opportunities in the Midwest and international communities. He started his career as a vocational agricultural teacher in Bartlett, Neb.. He went on to be a superintendent of schools in Nehawka and Wilbur, Neb. He achieved a doctorate of education from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

Duane was a professor of education, serving both as the head of the department and the acting dean at South Dakota State University. He was chosen leader of an SDSU team that worked for Aid to International Development to improve the agricultural college in Botswana. Duane was director of International programs at SDSU and continued his international work through the state department in Washington, D.C.

Duane returned to his home town of Lincoln to work at Mid America International Agricultural Consortium. He capped his career by working for the University of Nebraska to help create online education programs for doctoral candidates. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club International, the Farmhouse Fraternity, Phi Delta Kappa, and the United Methodist church, serving in multiple leadership roles in support of the organizations.

Family members include his wife, Jan Streily-Everrett; daughter, Jeanne (Mark) Stratton of Brookings; son, Jim (Vicki) Everrett of Port Angeles, Wash.; step-children, Janice Streily of Denver, Elaine Streily of Lincoln and Rick (Mary) Streily of Buena Vista, Colo.; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Pat Portsche of Olathe, Kan.; sister and brother-in-laws; Mary Everrett, Bob and Nancy Mook, Mel and Glema King, Dale and Juanita King; numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by wives, Marilyn L (Mook) Everrett and Betty (Shay) Everrett; and brother, Gary.

Memorials in lieu of flowers to First United Methodist Church, American Heart Association or American Cancer Society.

Willis Peterson
Feb. 7, 1934 – Oct. 12, 2014

Volga - Willis Peterson, 80, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2014, under hospice care at Sanford USD Medical Center in Sioux Falls. The family chose organ donation for Alzheimers research.

Memorial services are at 2 p.m. Thursday at Grace Lutheran Church in Nunda with the Rev. Paul Johansen officiating. Burial is at a later date at Rose Hill Cemetery in Wentworth. The family will be present for visitation 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Ellsworth Funeral Home.

Willis Raymond Peterson was born Feb. 7, 1934, at Chester, to Raymond and Blanche (Larsen) Peterson. He was raised in the Madison area and graduated from Beadle High School in Madison in 1952.

Willis married Ileen Anderson on May 14, 1955.

They lived on a mink farm south of Madison for 12 years and then moved into Madison. They later purchased and operated the King Koin Laundromat for 13 years and Willis was co-owner of B&W; Trucking. In 1980, they purchased the Town House Motel in Rapid City and operated it until 1996. They returned to Lake County to a farm near Volga, where they retired.

Survivors include his wife, Ileen of Volga; a son, Michael of Volga; three daughters, JoLynn (Jeff) Sorum of Canton, Susan (Jeff) Tutsch of Rutland and Gail (Richard) Nash of Crooks; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, MaryLou (Joe) Grantham of Madison; one sister-in-law Joanne Bakke of Buellton, Calif.; one brother-in-law Gene Anderson of Volga; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a nephew.

Virgil F. Stenberg
March 14, 1923 – Sept. 28, 2014

Dell Rapids - Virgil F. Stenberg, 91, of Dell Rapids died Sunday, Sept. 28, 2014, at the Dells Area Health Center.

Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Lutheran Church of Dell Rapids Chapel. Burial is the Colman Cemetery in Colman. Visitation will begin on Wednesday at 3 p.m. with the family present from 5. - 7 p.m. at Kahler Funeral Home.

He was born on March 14, 1923, in Colman, to Alma Skjonning (Sorensen) and Ove Jensen Stenberg. He was a graduate of Egan High School.

Virgil served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. After the war he farmed near Colman, then moved to Everett, Wash., and worked until the family moved back to South Dakota to farm near Brookings. He also worked at South Dakota State University as head carpenter and retired from there in 1984.

Virgil was a loving husband and father. A great-storyteller, he often entertained the family with stories of growing up on the farm near Colman. Although he was always busy, he was also full of fun and ready to chat with anyone. He dearly enjoyed music, whist and the barn cats. He was a truly loving, generous and hardworking man who will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Norma Alvina (Opland); and his children, Thomas G. (Germaine) Stenberg of Volga, Nancy E. (Edward) Morrison of Auburn, Ala., Scott L. (Tawni) Stenberg of Monticello, Wis., and Kent A. (Kathi) Stenberg of Warrenton, Mo.; his sister Arlene Lellelid of St. Paul, Minn.; his brothers, Bennett of Salvisa, Kent., and David of Colman four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheralyn Ann, brothers DeVere and Robert Stenberg and his sister, Elizabeth Cox (F.M.).
