Rosalie Ann Johnson
May 31, 1941 – Dec. 28, 2016

Rosalie Ann Johnson, 75, of Brookings died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2016, at the Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Burial is in First Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Eidsness Funeral Home.

Rosalie Ann (Schlender) Johnson was born near Erwin on May 31, 1941 to James R. and Alma (Ettie) Schlender. She attended school in Erwin where she was active as a cheerleader, choir member and many other activities. She graduated in 1959 as salutatorian of her class. She soon moved to Brookings where she worked for the Tasty Shoppe Restaurant, Farmer’s Coop, Kjellsen’s Chevrolet, K-Mart and Hy-Vee.

She met Robert Johnson shortly after she moved to Brookings and they married June 16, 1967. They had a son, Chad and two daughters, Renae and Tanya. She also has four wonderful grandchildren.

She loved spending time with her family and friends, dancing, singing and having a good time. She was always trying to help others–whether family members or friends. She did volunteer work at the hospital and the retirement center.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; son, Chad (Laurie) of Rosemount, Minn.; daughter, Renae (Terry Kluess) of Brookings, and daughter, Tanya (Kyle Christensen) of Tea; three granddaughters; a grandson; a brother, Jim of Kansas; two sisters, Jean of North Dakota, and Donna of Colorado and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by an older brother, Robert; two older sisters, Beverly and Adyln; and one niece.

Wilhelmina ‘Mina’ VanderWal Eggebraaten
Dec. 16, 1931 – Jan. 1, 2017

Wilhelmina “Mina” VanderWal Eggebraaten, 85, died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017 at Brookings Health System.

Wilhelmina “Mina” VanderWal Eggebraaten was born Dec. 16, 1931, to William (Bill) J. and Tessie (Mulder) VanderWal at the Volga Community Hospital in Volga.

Mina grew up in the Volga area, the oldest of six children. She received her education in Volga District No. 52 country school and graduated from Volga Public School in 1950. Being the oldest child in the family, Mina helped with farm chores and field work as a teenager. After graduating from high school, she worked for JC Penney in Brookings and for a poultry processing plant in Madison. She met her future husband, Graydon, on Main Street in Volga after a ball game.

Graydon was drafted into the Army and was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., where he and Mina were married on April 12, 1952.

Following Graydon’s discharge from the Army in 1954, he and Mina lived in a trailer house while Graydon worked for Mina’s uncle, A.J. VanderWal, near Volga. In 1955, they moved to a farm north of Arlington. Their second child, Nita, was born shortly before they moved to the farm. The rest of their children, Keith, Deann, Allan and Carol, were born while living on this farm. A devoted wife and mother, Mina led a full life raising and caring for her family, growing a large garden, canning produce each year, teaching her daughters to play piano and sew, doing bookwork, and helping with farm chores. Her applesauce, dill pickle, and rubarb dessert recipes were family favorites. She enjoyed reading and corresponding with friends and family by snail mail and email. In her later years, she found joy in sewing hundreds of potholders and baby bibs which were given as Christmas and shower gifts to family and friends. She took great interest in her grandchildren’s activities and adored her great-grandchildren. Mina was known for her kind heart and helpful spirit to others. She saw the good in everyone.

Mina was formerly an active member of the First Reformed Church in Volga and spent many years teaching Sunday school and helping with the music. Mina currently attended the First Assembly of God Church in Brookings. Mina and Graydon participated in mission trips to Hawaii and the Philippines with Mina’s father, Bill, building missionary housing. Mina lived her life for the Lord. She emulated her father’s belief of stewardship of the land, daily Bible reading, and applying it to her family and work.

For many years, Mina and Graydon spent several months each winter residing in Mission, Texas. They enjoyed making new friends and frequently spent time with Army buddies and their wives during this time. In 2016, after living on the farm for over 61 years, she moved to Edgewood Vista Assisted Living in Brookings. She enjoyed the respite from cooking, appreciated the nursing assistance, and spent many hours reading and sewing, her favorite past times. She made field trips to the farm to collect sewing supplies and check on her cat, Daisy.

She is survived by five children, Bryan Eggebraaten of Farmington, Minn.; Nita (Robert) Sachen of Brookings; Keith (Linda) Eggebraaten, of ArlingtonDeann (Larry) Moulton of Verdi, Minn., and Allan (Laree) Eggebraaten of Arlington and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brothers, Ed (Gina) VanderWal and Ray (Marlys) VanderWal of Volga; her sisters, Marcia (Ron) Carver of Volga and Loretta (Duane) Kleinjan of Sinai; her brother-in-law, Glenn Eggebraaten of Rutland; her former sister-in-law, Janet Drewes of Brookings; her former son-in-law Jerry Gillespie of Brandonand a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Graydon, her brother, John Wilmar VanderWal ; her youngest daughter, Carol Gillespie, and her nephew, Brent VanderWal.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brookings First Assembly of God Church in Brookings. Visitation is from 4-7 p.m. at the Eidsness Funeral Chapel in Volga, .

Emlon “Stan” Lee Stanton
June 3, 1932 – Dec. 22, 2016

Hot Springs - Emlon “Stan” Lee Stanton, Sr., 84, of Hot Springs, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2016, at his home in Hot Springs.

Emlon was born on June 3, 1932, in Mayfield, N.Y., to Ivan Lee and Marion (Hunter) Stanton. He served in the United States Air Force in Omaha, Bermuda, and the Arctic.

He married Joyce Conbeer and to them five children were born: Karen, Lee, Ron, David, and Diana. Stan worked at a private park in upstate New York for a number of years.

He came to the Hot Springs area in 1980, and worked at the feed lot and Hills Materials.

In 1990. he married Michele Mar Syrstad, and then adopted Rob.

He was disabled in 1991 and lived the rest of his life happily on the ranch.

He is survived by his wife, Michele (Mar) Stanton of Hot Springs (formerly of Brookings); sons, Emlon Lee Stanton, Jr. of Kalispell, Mont.; Ronald Ray Stanton of Marion, Mont.; David Neil Stanton of Hot Springs; Robert Loren Stanton of Sioux Falls; daughters, Karen Eileen Stanton of Hot Springs; Diana Lynn Donovan of Ft. Mill, S.C.; brother-in-law, Ralph Knepper; 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Emlon is also survived by his mother in-law, Carolyn Mar of Hot Springs (formerly of Brookings); Brian and Cheryl Abbas, Worthing; Allen and Karen Bolte, Lennox; Gerald and Laurie Cressman, Hartsford, Tim Bolte, Sioux Falls, Terry Bolte, Sioux Falls; Mindy and Al Hehn, Elkton, Mitzi Edman, Harrisburg; 21 step-grandchildren and 11 step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Marion Stanton; wife, Joyce Stanton; sister, Joyce Knepper.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, Dec, 27, at Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs with the Rev. Mark Crossman officiating.

Arrangements have been placed in the care of Chamberlain McColley’s Funeral Home in Hot Springs.

Alfred Samuel Andrawis
July 9, 1947 – Jan. 1, 2017

Alexandria, Va. - Alfred Samuel Andrawis, 69, of Alexandria, Va., departed died Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017 following a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2017, at noon at Saint Mark Coptic Orthodox Church, 11911 Braddock Rd, Fairfax, Va., 22030. Burial will follow at Fairfax Memorial Park, 9900 Braddock Road, Fairfax, Va. 22032. The family will accept condolences at Saint Mark’s social hall following the burial.

Alfred was born in Khartoum, Sudan on July 9, 1947. He studied electrical engineering and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alexandria, Egypt. He then started working as a telecommunications engineer in Sudan.

He was married to his sweetheart, Madeleine, on Feb. 26, 1978.

In 1979, he came to the United States with his young family to pursue a master’s degree from South Dakota State University. After graduation in 1982, he was offered and accepted a full-time Instructor position in the Department of Electrical Engineering. In 1987, he then relocated, along with his family, to Blacksburg, Va., to work on a doctoral degree from Virginia Tech. After receiving his Ph.D. in electrical engineering, he returned to SDSU in 1992 to accept a professorship position.

His academic career of over 30 years was filled with personal achievements and scholarly activities that included securing funding grants, publishing peer-reviewed research papers, presenting at national and international conferences, developing and presenting technical workshops, establishing and upgrading laboratories, developing and teaching courses, conducting research at several NASA centers, and working with local and regional industries.

Alfred will also be remembered for planning and leading seven memorable study abroad trips to Egypt as part of a general University course that he offered. Numerous faculty and staff members, students, and community leaders studied and traveled to Egypt under his guidance.

After retiring in 2013 as a Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering, Alfred and his wife moved to Alexandria, Va., where he could be close to his family. He became actively involved in God’s service at the newly established Saint Abanoub Coptic Orthodox Church in Springfield, Va.

Alfred was gentle, fun, thoughtful, and wise. He had a profound love of teaching, travel, and music. He was a blessing to his family, friends, students, colleagues, and everyone who encountered him.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Anisa, and his brothers, Amazis and Maurice.

He is survived by his wife, Madeleine, his sons, David and Danny, his daughter, Mary, as well as Mary’s husband, John Refila, and their daughter, Sophia. He is also survived by his siblings Helen, Victor, Iris, and Suzan.

Mavis MarDell Norgaard
April 4, 1926 – Jan. 2, 2017

Arlington - Mavis MarDell Norgaard, 90, of Arlington, died Monday, Jan. 2, 2017, at the Brookings hospital.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. on Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arlington with the Rev. Derk Thompson officiating. Burial is in the Arlington City Cemetery. Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. on Thursday at the Johnson-Henry Funeral Home in Arlington and preceding services in the church on Friday.

Mavis MarDell Gumsrud was born April 4, 1926, to Andrew and MaeLena (Larson) Gumsrud at St. Lawrence.

She moved with her family to the Lake Preston area and attended the Hetland Grade School, later attending high school in Washington.

She married Hartvig Norgaard on April 3, 1943. They had eight children.

Mavis worked at the nursing home, Interlake and Parkview Apartments. She loved to sew, bake and play cards.

She is survived by her children, Rodney (Bonnie) Norgaard of Arlington, Kathleen (Kenny) Gilbery of Balaton, Minn., Janelle (David) Virchow of Arlington, Gerald (Lana) Norgaard of Watertown, Rebecca (Gene) Johnson of Atlantic, Iowa, George (Roxane) Norgaard of Hetland, Julie Oines of Arlington and Keith (Darla) Norgaard of Arlington and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her husband, five brothers and three sisters, many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Julie Cooper
July 29, 1959 - Jan. 2, 2017

Sioux Falls - After fighting a long and courageous battle with cancer, Julie Cooper died Jan. 2, 2017, at the Dougherty House in Sioux Falls.

Julie Cooper was born July 29, 1959, in Brookings, to Jim and Shirley Cooper. She attended Brookings schools, graduating from high school in 1977. She attended SDSU, graduating in 1981 in Fashion Retailing.

Julie was married to Bruce Fischer and had three beautiful children.

She loved being a mom and attending her kids' activities. Julie was always the creative mom, making homemade Halloween costumes every year for her kids, and customizing their rooms.

Her talents led her to create each room with its own theme and enjoyed sewing the draperies, bedding and anything she could to make the room special. Julie was a very talented seamstress. She spent many years working at Traditions, sewing custom draperies and later sewing independently. Julie loved to be creative and used her talents in many ways.

Julie loved the outdoors, camping with her family, her annual trips to Sturgis, and socializing. She loved to travel. Although she did not have many opportunities to travel, when she did, Julie made the most of her trips. She was known best for her beautiful smile, positive attitude and kind heart.

Grateful for having shared her life, are her parents, Jim and Shirley Cooper, Brookings; her daughter, Valerie (Adam) DeWitte, Sioux Falls, ; sons, Jonathan Fischer, Sioux Falls, Mattius Fischer, Sioux Falls; two granddaughters, Marlie and Ellie, Sioux Falls; brothers, Al (Mickey), Sioux Falls, Brian, (Monica), Brookings, Darin, (Marie) Spearfish; nieces, nephews, and cousins. Julie was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Services to celebrate Julie's life will be held 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at Miller Southside Chapel, 7400 S. Minnesota Avenue (81st and Minnesota Ave) Sioux Falls.

Visitation begins at noon Thursday, January 5, 2017, at Miller Southside Chapel, with the family present to greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral chapel.

Evelyn C. Tillgren
Sept. 19, 1921 – Jan. 3, 2017

Estelline - Evelyn C. Tillgren, 95, of Estelline, died Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2017, at Estelline Nursing and Care Center. Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation is from 1 p.m. until the time of services at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials be directed to Grace Free Lutheran Church in Bruce, or the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in Estelline.

Evelyn C. Derdall was born Sept. 19, 1921, in Colman, , the daughter of Guy and Bertha (Thompson) Derdall. She grew up and attended school in Brookings, graduating from Brookings High School in 1940.

After high school, she was a clerk at Tidball Pharmacy until she married Melvin M. Tillgren on Jan. 25, 1942 in Brookings. They moved to California where Melvin was employed building planes during World War II,

They then moved to Omaha, Neb., where Melvin was employed at Glen L. Martin Airplane Plant. They moved to Bruce in 1947 when they started farming until their retirement in 1972. They then made their home in Estelline.

Evelyn was an incredible cook and loved cooking and entertaining her family and friends. She loved spending time with family and friends, but especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of Grace Free Lutheran Church in Bruce and she was active in the church choir and the ladies aid.

She is survived by her daughter, Brenda (Bill) Conn of Brookings; daughter-in-law, Wilma Tillgren of Bruce; sister-in-law, Mildred Johnson of Brookings; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin; two sons, David and infant son, Michael; two brothers, Glen Derdall and Goodwin Derdall and two sisters, Stella Bortnem and Clarice Derdall.

John ‘Pat’ Leary
April 26, 1935 – Jan. 4, 2017

Volga - John “Pat” Leary, 81, of Volga, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2017, at Brookings Health System. Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. Family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday at Rude’s Funeral Home. A Liturgical Wake Service will begin at 6:30 p.m. Funeral arrangements are with Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.

John Patrick Leary was born on April 26, 1935, in Rhame, N.D., the son of Harold and Marion (Buckley) Leary.

Pat received his early education in Marmath, N.D., and graduated from Mobridge High School in 1953. While in high school, he worked at the Mobridge Tribune, where he found his niche setting type on a Linotype. This led to a love of typography which lasted throughout his lifetime. He continued his education at South Dakota State University in Brookings, graduating with a degree in printing and journalism in 1958. While earning his degree, he set type on the Linotype for the Brookings Register.

Pat married Eunice J. Kracke on June 19, 1958, in Brookings.

Pat served with the Army National Guard from 1958 to 1964. From 1959 to 1963, Pat managed the Volga Tribune in Volga. He was then employed at Harold’s Printing Company in Brookings until 1966, when he went to work at SDSU in the editorial office. In 1968, he purchased Harold’s Printing Company and continued to own and operate the business until his retirement in 2010. Following retirement, he worked part-time at the South Dakota Newspaper Association and spent much of his time volunteering in the kitchen at the church. He also enjoyed sending personal notes and newspaper clippings to family and friends.

For several years, he served as a counselor at Boys’ State Journalism City where he enjoyed sharing his expertise in printing and journalism. Having loved railroads since childhood, he enjoyed train ride adventures with his grandchildren. He also cherished his time with family at “the shop.” As a business owner for over 40 years, he appreciated the relationships he developed with his customers.

Pat was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, BPO Elks No.1490, Friends of the “261”, Chicago Northwestern Historical Society, Milwaukee Road Historical Association, Northern Pacific Historical Society, the Amalgamated Printer Association and the American Typecasting Fellowship.

Pat is survived by his wife, Eunice; a son, Stephen (Sheila) Leary of Brookings; three daughters, Cecelia (Michael) VanEde of Mundelein, Ill., Catherine (Dale) Libolt of Fort Rock, Ore., and Mary (Bret) Larson of Volga; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; a sister, Mary Hollenbeck of Edgemont; two sisters-in-law, Deloris Lester and Joy Kracke of Dallas, Ore.; one brother-in-law, Jerry Moxon of Livermore, Calif.; several nieces and nephews; along with a host of other relatives.

Pat was preceded in death by his three brothers-in-law, Marvin Kracke, Larry Lester and HC (Bud) Hollenbeck; and one sister-in-law, Janice Moxon.
