Marie Viola Egeberg
December 31, 1912 - September 9, 2011
Marie Viola Egeberg, 98, of Brookings, died Friday, September 9, 2011 at the United Retirement Center in Brookings, SD. Funeral services will be held at 10:30am, Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at the First Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, at the First Lutheran Church in Brookings.
Marie Viola Green was born on December 31, 1912, in White, South Dakota, the daughter of Thomas and Rosa (Laabs) Green.
Marie spent her early years in Brookings County, near White, SD, and received her education in rural schools in Brookings County and the White Public School. She was united in marriage to Herbert N. Egeberg, on May 25, 1930, in Canton, SD. Herbert passed away on January 22, 1995, and Marie married Vila Gates in Arlington, SD, on February 21, 1998. Vila passed away on April 25, 2004. Marie was employed at the Steam Laundry in Brookings for over twenty years.
Marie was a member of the First Lutheran Church, in Brookings, SD. She enjoyed sewing, quilting and crocheting.
She is survived by three sons; Darwin and his wife, Barbara of Madison, SD, Ronald and his wife, Sharan of Brookings, SD, Robert and his wife, JoEllen of Morton, IL; one daughter, Marian Egeberg of Aurora, CO; one son-in-law, Roy Mann of Urbandale, IA; fourteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one brother, Wilbur Green of Watertown, SD; one sister, Elma Herr and her husband Harlan of Webster, SD; one sister-in-law Evelyn Green of Russellville, OH; one brother-in-law Ralph Righi of Glendale, CA, and several step-children, several step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one son, Dale Egeberg, one daughter Bernice Mann; four sisters, Luella, Irene, Margie, Mavis and three brothers, Francis, Willis and Melvin.
Kathryn Henning
January 10, 1921 - September 19, 2011
Kathryn Henning, 90, formally of Brookings, died Monday, September 19, 2011 in Shakopee, Minnesota. Memorial services will be held at 2:00pm, Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings. Visitation and lunch will begin at 12:00pm at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
Kathryn Knutson was born January 10, 1921 to Sam and Alice Knutson in Lennox, SD. She spent her early years in rural South Dakota, and graduated from high school in Inwood, IA. She then attended both Augustana College and South Dakota State University, graduating with a degree in Home Economics.
Following graduation, she joined the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (W.A.A.C.) and received an honorable discharge in August of 1943. She met her husband, LeRoy Henning, while teaching Home Economics and other curriculum in Sacred Heart, Minnesota. They married on June 10, 1950 in Sioux Falls, SD and made their home in the following Minnesota cities: Spring Valley, Jeffers, New York Mills and Shoreview before settling in Claremont.
Kathryn was a member of her local Auxiliary, American Legion, Commercial Club, Good Sams and various other social clubs. Her many hobbies included cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, crocheting, gardening, bridge and reading. She and LeRoy were avid Square Dancers and served as officers in the MN State Square Dance Association.
She is dearly missed by her 3 daughters; Deborah Henning, Vicki Miller and Konie Henning (Mike Ricciardi); one brother, Gordon Knutson; her grandchildren, Kurstyn (Brian) Loeffler, Chase (Nickie) Miller, Kelbee Miller, Jacob Ricciardi, Isaak Weum, Zachary Ricciardi; many nieces and nephews and is loved by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and two sisters Lucille Aeilts and Mildred Thompson.
Coralyn James
June 1, 1924 – Sept. 29, 2014
Faribault, Minn. - Coralyn James, 90, of Faribault, Minn., and formerly of Brookings, died Monday, Sept. 29, 2014, at District One Hospital in Faribault. Funeral services are at 2 p.m., Monday at Eidsness Funeral Home. Visitation is from noon until the start of the funeral on Monday at Eidsness Funeral Home.
Coralyn Marie Amidon was born on June 1, 1924, to Lee and Gertrude (Lowell) Amidon in Morgantown, W.V. She grew up in West Virginia, Minn., and Kentucky before moving to South Dakota. Coralyn graduated from Brookings High School. She then attended SDSU and graduated with her bachelor’s degree. After graduation, Coralyn attended Dakota State where she received her teacher’s certificate and later graduated with a master’s degree from Emporia State University.
Coralyn married Richard James on May 31, 1947, in Brookings. They had four daughters. The couple later ended their marriage. Richard died in 1983. Coralyn taught at Head Start and then worked as a secretary at SDSU in the Extension office. Coralyn was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Brookings. She enjoyed singing in the church choir, genealogy, and collecting items of all kinds.
Survivors include four daughters, Anne (Fred) Grote Jr. of Texas, Sharon (Cleland) Micheel of Illinois, Jeanette (John) Carter of Kentucky, and Dorothy (Alan) Seaver of Minnesota; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, John (Joy) Amidon of Vermont; two nieces, and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Ruth Amidon.
Floyd W. Skovlund
January 9, 1926 - October 2, 2011
Floyd W. Skovlund, 85, of Brookings, SD, passed away October 2, 2011. Funeral Services have been set for 10:30 am Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Grace Lutheran Church, Bruce, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, October 5, 2011 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
Floyd W. Skovlund was born on January 9, 1926 in Brookings County, SD, the son of Oscar and Mabel (Holter) Skovlund.
Floyd received his education in rural school in Brookings County, SD. He served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1953 during the Korean Conflict. After serving in the Army, he returned to South Dakota where he farmed. He was united in marriage to Louise Meisenheimer on October 7, 1967, in Estelline, SD. In 1972 he was employed at SDSU in Residential Life.
He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Bruce, SD and the Bruce American Legion Post #200. He enjoyed playing Bingo and especially spending time with his family and friends.
Floyd is survived by his wife Louise of Brookings, SD; two daughters, Darla (Keith) Norgaard of Arlington, SD and Kimberly Toucedo of Brookings; four grandchildren, Marshall Norgaard of Arlington, SD, Taylor Virchow of Brookings, SD, Tomas Toucedo and Tyson Toucedo both of Arlington, SD; three brothers Gerald Skovlund of Bruce, SD, Alden (Carol) Skovlund of Bruce, SD and Harold Skovlund of Brookings, SD; one sister, Audrey Ulvestad of Bruce, SD and his faithful companion, Gus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, Leon, Melvin, Ralph, Olaf and Adolph and his four sisters, Olga, Evelyn, Ellen and Esther.

Robert ‘Wade’ Johnson
Oct. 4, 1958 – Oct. 1, 2014
Robert "Wade" Johnson, 55, of Brookings, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, at his home in Brookings. Funeral services are at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation is at Rude’s Funeral Home on Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.
Robert "Wade" Johnson was born on Oct. 4, 1958, in Muleshoe, Texas, the son of Robert and Carol (Hagen) Johnson. His father died when he was six weeks old. His mother married Orville Sorlie and Wade and his brothers and sisters were raised on the farm. He attended Eastview Country School and Moe Country School, both in rural Canton. He completed his early education at Canton Middle School and High School, before going on to college at South Dakota State University. He married Brenda Jervik on June 8, 1979. They made their home in Brookings, where they raised their three sons.
Wade loved attending his sons’ sporting events and being outdoors, especially when he was fishing or riding his Harley Davidson. Above all, he was a loving husband and a proud dad and grandpa.
Wade worked at Coast-to-Coast/True Value for 20 years. For the past 10 years, Wade has owned and operated Johnson Salvage and Recycling. He was a man of many treasures.
Wade was active in National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) and presented "In-Your-Own-Voice" to share insight into mental illness. Despite the many obstacles in life, Wade always maintained a positive attitude and ambitious spirit.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda; three sons, Jeremy (Nalo) Johnson, of Sioux Falls, Daniel Johnson, of Sioux Falls and Brandon (Brandi) Johnson; four grandchildren; his parents, Carol and Orville Sorlie of Canton; two brothers, O.J. (Jana) Sorlie, Jon (Brodie) Sorlie, both of Canton; three sisters, Julie (Mark) Fickbohm, Jody (Vaughn) Johnson, both of Alcester, and Janie (Rick) Gentry of Junction City, Kan.; an uncle, Jan Johnson of Sacramento, Calif.; his mother-in-law, Darlene Jervik of Hudson; brothers-in-law, Lane Jervik, Greg Jervik, Kevin Jervik, and Kirk Jervik; and several other aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.
Wade was preceded in death by his father, Robert; father-in-law, Leo Jervik; his grandparents; and brother-in-law, Clark Jervik.
Ida Eldora Juntunen

Funeral services for Ida Eldora E. Juntunen, 82, will be 10:00am, Monday, March 15, 2010, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Lake Norden, SD, with visitation on Sunday from 2pm until 4pm at the Geise Funeral Home in Lake Norden. She died on Wednesday, March 10, 2010, at the Golden Living Center in Lake Norden.
Ida Eldora Elisabeth Koistinen was born on June 7, 1927, in Cleveland Township near Bryant, SD, the daughter of Charles and Ida (Matoniemi) Koistinen. She was Baptized on June 14, 1927. She attended country school near Bryant and graduated from Lake Norden High School in 1945. Eldora was united in marriage to Erland Juntunen on December 10, 1945 in Watertown, SD. After their marriage they resided briefly in Berkeley, CA before returning to the Lake Norden area to farm. As a young woman she was employed as a waitress, which began a lifetime of serving others. She was employed at many different places including the Egg House, Creamery, grocery stores and the Gambles Store. In 1982 they moved into Lake Norden. Eldora later worked at the Lake Norden Nursing and Care Center. Eldora entered the Golden Age Living Center on September 11, 2008.
Eldora and Erland enjoyed many years of traveling, spending 30 winters in Arizona. She visited Finland in 1977 with her sister, returning in 2004 with her children. Eldora and Erland also traveled all over the United States including the New England States, Kentucky, Missouri and Hawaii, She volunteered at church and taught Sunday School for many years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Museum Board and the Baseball Concession stand. She enjoyed making numerous crafts for friends and family.
Grateful for sharing her life are her husband Erland of Lake Norden, SD; her children Judy (Bill) Bartholow of Huron, SD, Jim (Cynthia) Juntunen of Brookings, SD; her grandchildren Mike (LeAnn) Bartholow, of Huron, SD, Bonnie Bartholow of Fife, WA, Joshua Juntunen of Vermillion, SD, and Elisabeth of Sioux Falls, SD; three great grandchildren Ethan and Addison Bartholow and Ella Rose McCaffrey; one sister Elsie (Marvin) Marttila and one brother Clarence (Marie) Koistinen all of Lake Norden, SD.
She was preceded in death by her parents and ten brothers.
Beatrice Marilyn Heath

BEATRICE M. HEATH of LaVista, NE, and formerly of Brookings, SD, passed away in Omaha, NE, October 6, 2011 at the age of 80 years.
Beatrice is preceded in death by husband Duane; parents Orville and Gladys Ward; two brothers Robert Borstad and Darwin Ward and one sister Beverly Mallory.
She is survived by three daughters Sherry (Leroy) Grafing, Diane (Ray) Newman and Susan (Ty) Smith; one son Michael (Kathleen) Heath; 9 grandchildren and 2 great-granddaughters brothers and sisters Betty Olson, Wayne Ward, Barbara Decker Anita Likes, David Borstad and Linda Cunningham and many nieces and nephews
Visitation will be held Monday, October 10th, at 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. with Funeral Service’s at 2:00 p.m. at the Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, South Dakota.
Interment will follow the funeral service at Greenwood Cemetery, Brookings, S.D.

Mary Wakeman, 88, of Brookings, SD, died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at the United Retirement Center, Brookings, SD. Mass of Christian Burial will be 1:30pm Friday, October 21, 2011 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD with a Liturgical Wake Service will be 6:30pm at Rude’s Funeral Home.
Mary Shinnick was born September 20, 1923 in Watertown, SD the daughter of Fred M. and Mary Ann (Culhane) Shinnick. Mary received her education in the Brookings Schools and was a graduate of the Brookings High School in 1941. She continued her education at SDSU.
Mary was united in marriage to G. Harvey Wakeman on November 12, 1941 in Brookings, SD. After their marriage they lived in Brookings and later in Sioux Falls, SD before moving back to back to Brookings, in 1946.
Mary was employed at the Brookings Clinic from 1974 until 1977 and from 1977 to 1980 at the Brookings Telephone Company.
She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church and the Ladies Guild. She was active in the American Cancer Society and the Brookings Senior Center. She especially enjoyed spending time with family.
Mary is survived by her sons, Richard (Cindy) Wakeman of Brookings, SD and James (Carolyn) Wakeman of Los Cruces, NM; a daughter, Julia Ann Wakeman-Linn of Bethesda, MD; ten grandchildren; five great- grandchildren and a sister, Shirley (Darrel) Peterson of Ivanhoe, MN.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Harvey; one grandson, Zachary; two children, Robert and Mary Jo; two brothers, Lloyd and John and one sister, Alethea.
