Fern L. Otteson
August 18, 1927 - October 21, 2011
Fern L. Otteson, 84, of Brookings, died, Friday, October 21, 2011 at the United Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Fern L. Eberlein was born on August 18, 1927 in Brookings County, the daughter of Frank and Gladys (Messerschmidt) Eberlein.
Fern received her education in a rural school in Brookings County and the Volga School and graduated from Volga High School in 1948. She was united in marriage to Randall R. Otteson on December 1, 1948 in Brookings. She was employed for a short time at the Sawnee Hotel in Brookings. After raising her family, she worked as a bookkeeper at GTC Auto Parts, which was owned and operated by her and her husband until their retirement in 1991.
She was a member of the Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings, the Ladies Aid, the American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed bowling and especially spending time with her family and friends.
Fern is survived by one son, Alan Otteson of Brookings, SD; one daughter, Carol (Lenard) Deiterman of Springdale, AR; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lorraine (Edwin) Berkland, LaVada (Stanley) Schlotman all of Brookings, SD, Joyce Eberlein of Ormond Beach, FL; two brothers, Melvin (Rudie) Eberlein of Bettendorf, IA and Delven (Athene) Eberlein of Eau Claire, WI.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Randall, one granddaughter Beth, and two brothers Alvin and Calvin.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00am, Monday, October 24, 2011 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Brookings. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings.
John Wesley Colquitt, Jr.
April 14, 1951 - January 28, 2012
John Wesley Colquitt, Jr., 60, of Brookings, SD, died Saturday, January 28, 2012 at Avera Heart Hospital, Sioux Falls, SD.
John Wesley Colquitt, Jr. was born April 14, 1951 in Beaver Falls, PA, the son of John Wesley and Ida Mae (Townes) Colquitt Sr. John served in the United State Air Force from May of 1970 to March of 1972 when he was honorably discharged.
John was united in marriage to Cindy Nisich in Watertown, SD on May 7, 2003.
John had several jobs while he lived in Watertown, SD and Brookings, SD, one which included at the Brookings Register.
John is survived by his wife, Cindy Colquitt of Brookings, SD; his step-children, Colleen Moshier of Hayti, SD, Cody Waege and Corry (Nikki) Waege, both of Montrose, CO; his three step-grandsons and eight step-granddaughters.
John was preceded in death by his "Mama Ida Mae".
Funeral Services have been set for 1:00pm Thursday, February 2, 2012 at First United Methodist Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm Thursday, February 2, 2012 at First United Methodist Church. Rude’s Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Jeanette Rude
August 31, 1921 - January 31, 2012
Jeanette Helen Rude, 90, of Menahga, MN, formerly of Madison, MN, and Brookings, SD, died on January 31, 2012 at the Rose Haven assisted-living residence in Menahga, Minnesota. A funeral service will be held at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD on Sat., Feb.4, 2012 at 2:00PM, with burial immediately following in the First Lutheran Cemetery of Brookings. Visitation will start at 1:00pm until the time of the service.
Jeanette was born in Geddes, South Dakota on August 31, 1921, the daughter of George and Anna Shuck.
She attended Geddes High School, graduating in 1939. Jeanette attended Northern State College in Aberdeen, South Dakota, from 1939-1940. She also attended Southern Normal College in Springfield, South Dakota from 1941-1942, from which she received her two year teaching degree. For two years, Jeanette taught grades one through eight and Girls Glee Club in a one-room school near Gayville, South Dakota.
When back home in Geddes, she met a handsome young teacher (Bert) who happened to room in her mother's home, and a loving relationship of 60+ years ensued. In the fall of 1942, she traveled by train to the Army- Air Force Base at Victoria, Texas to marry Captain Bert T. Rude, Jr. They were married in the base chapel on November 1 of that year. To this union, four children were born: Bert Theron, III, Jeannine, Jill and Elizabeth. During the 1970’s, Jeanette was an aide in the special education department at Madison High School.
She formed lasting friendships with several of the students she assisted. She also was involved in the formation and daily activities of the Lac qui Parle County Developmental Achievement Center, also mentoring students she supervised there. Jeanette was very active in all aspects of service at Faith Lutheran Church, which included participating in the women’s circle, teaching Sunday School and directing the children’s choir. Jeanette also held leadership positions in the Madison chapter of the Eastern Star and the Madison Study Club. She and Bert enjoyed playing bridge and attending dances with friends. They also loved the fine arts, attending concerts, plays and art shows when possible. Bert and Jeanette moved to Park Rapids, MN. in 1998 and became members of Calvary Lutheran Church. After Bert’s death in 2002, Jeanette lived in the Belkit Pines assisted-living residence for a year, moving to the Rose Haven residence in Menahga in 2003 where she resided until her death.
Jeanette was a devoted wife and mother who enjoyed reading, growing plants and flowers, writing poetry and helping others of all ages, especially children. She loved listening to music of many styles and singing alto harmony, all of which provided great enjoyment and comfort to her up until her death. Even after she could no longer speak, she was able to accurately hum the melodies of songs she knew. We will greatly miss her clear alto voice, her brilliant smile, her contagious laughter, her wit and her little dance while enjoying family gatherings.
Jeanette is survived by her children: Bert T. Rude, III (Beverly) of Ellicott City, MD; Jeannine Rude of Apple Valley, MN.; Jill Cheek of Castle Rock, CO; and Elizabeth (Brad) Fossen of Park Rapids, MN.; four grandchildren: Heidi Cheek of Chicago, Illinois; Mackenzie Cheek of Castle Rock, Colorado; Anna Fossen of Grand Forks, North Dakota and Mitchell Fossen of Park Rapids, Minnesota and one step-granddaughter, Anne Boyd Rioux of New Orleans, LA. She is also survived by one step-great-grandchild: Emma Rioux of New Orleans, LA.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, two sisters and one step-sister.
Our family greatly appreciates the wonderful care and concern shown by Jeanette’s Rose Haven family. We will never forget the beautiful and peaceful environment created for her at that facility, and we are all grateful for the many kindnesses shown to Jeanette.
Lucille E. Vick
October 24, 1921 - February 4, 2012
Lucille E. Vick, 90, of Brookings, SD, died Saturday, February 04, 2012 at Brookings Health Care System, Brookings, SD.
Lucille E. Larson was born October 24, 1921 in Sinai, SD the daughter of Lewis and Petra (Gunderson) Larson. She received her education in Sinai and was a graduate of the Sinai High School in 1939 after which she worked for her father at the Sinai Mercantile Company. Later she worked at the First State Bank of Sinai.
Lucille was united in marriage to Boyd Vick on August 10, 1943. While Boyd was in training for his service in the United State Army Air Corps, Lucille traveled with him for a year to California, Oregon, Nevada and New Mexico. When he was sent overseas, she returned to Sinai to live with her parents. Following Boyd’s honorable discharge in 1945, they farmed in Brookings County until their retirement in 1981. Lucille and Boyd then moved into Brookings.
During the farming years, Lucille reentered the work force, her first job being at First National Bank of Brookings and at the Community Oil, to help put her children through college.
Lucille was always active in Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, teaching Sunday school and Bible school. She was a circle member and sewed many quilt tops for missions. She remained a member until her death. She was also involved in Extension Club, 4-H Club, the Sons of Norway and was a volunteer at the United Retirement Center for 15 years. Her hobbies included quilting, baking, bowling and working on puzzles. She was a woman with a beautiful heart who had immense grace and boundless hospitality.
Lucille was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Arnold; sister, Mildred; her husband of 65 years, Boyd and her son, Curtis.
Those who will miss her most are her daughters, Donna (Jim) Markusen of Ft. Myers, FL and Susan (Denis) Hofflander of Sioux Falls, SD; one daughter-in-law, Linda Vick of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Karen (Matt) Kammann of Parker, CO, Nathan Hofflander and his fiance’ Sara Supalla of Sioux Falls, SD, Katie (Brad) Smith of Chicago, IL and Kristin (Dave) Schaaf of DesMoines, IA; four great-grandchildren, Thaniel, Luciana, Paul and Ethan and one sister-in-law, Mildred Larson of Salem, SD.
Funeral Services have been set for 10:30am Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Lake Campbell Lutheran Church, rural Volga, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.

Carol A. Omodt
September 21, 1938 - February 5, 2012
Carol A. Omodt, 73, of Brookings, died Sunday, February 5, 2012 at the Brookings Hospital in Brookings, SD.
Carol Ann Mertens was born in Jordan, Minnesota on September 21, 1938 to LeRoy and Helen (Messerer) Mertens. She graduated from the St. Joseph Academy in 1956 and began studies in Psychology at St Catherine’s University. On September 7, 1957 she was united in marriage to Gary Omodt. After living in St. Paul, Minnesota for 3 years, the couple moved to Brookings, SD, where Gary took the position of Assistant Professor of Pharmacy at South Dakota State University. She was a stay-at-home mom until 1971, when she became a ward secretary at the Brookings Hospital, where she worked for 32 years. After retiring from the Brookings Hospital, she enjoyed volunteering at the United Retirement Center, bringing a smile to everyone’s face, and helping with bingo and bridge.
Carol loved baking, gardening, couponing, and especially babies, she was in a world of happiness when there was a baby around. Carol was a very loving, thoughtful mother and grandmother, who always enjoyed seeing her relatives. She never missed a birthday, always getting a special card out to each and every one of her beloved children and grandchildren every year at just the right time.
She is survived by her husband, Gary, of Brookings, SD; three sons, Greg Omodt, of Sioux Falls, SD, Jeff Omodt of Mankato, MN and Steve (Gale) Omodt of Aberdeen, SD; three daughters, Stacy (Darrell) Thomas of Sioux Falls, SD, Karen (Barry) McMahon, of Owatonna, MN, and Kelly Omodt of Sioux Falls, SD; her grandchildren, Mike, Wynter, Whysper, and Adam Omodt, Collin, Kelsey, and Marley Thomas and Jack, Thomas, and Amanda Collins; her brother, Mike Mertens of Ozark, MO and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Marilyn, and one infant brother, Patrick.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Friday, February 10, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Brookings. Visitation will be from 5pm to 7pm Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings with a Liturgical Wake Service beginning at 6:30pm.
Douglas Keith Tordoff
April 15, 1953 - January 29, 2012
Douglas Keith Tordoff, 58, of Colfax, CA, and formerly of Brookings, SD, died Sunday, January 29, 2012 in Colfax, CA.
Douglas Keith Tordoff was born on April 17, 1953 in Brookings, SD, the son of Marvin and Rosie (Texley) Tordoff.
Doug was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church of Brookings and graduated from Brookings High School in 1971.
He worked for L.G. Everest in Brookings before moving to California and worked there as an operating engineer until his health forced him to retire. Douglas enjoyed playing baseball and softball while living in Brookings.
He is survived by his mother, Rosie Tordoff of Brookings, SD; one sister, Rosemary (Larry) Groth of Sioux Falls, SD; two brothers, Jerry (Mary) Tordoff of Watertown, SD; Duane (Janet) Tordoff of Spearfish, SD and several nieces and nephews.
Douglas was preceded in death by his father, Marvin; two brothers, Donald and Ronald and his grandparents.
Graveside services will be held at a later date.
Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mary Becker
January 16, 1939 - February 12, 2012
Mary Becker, 73, of Brookings, SD, died Sunday, February 12, 2012 at United Retirement Center, Brookings, SD. Funeral Services will be 2:00pm, Thursday, February 16, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 7:00pm Wednesday, February 15, 2012 at Rude’ s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.
Mary Narragon was born January 16, 1939 in Swift County, Minnesota the daughter of Orlie and Frances (Gerlack) Narragon. Mary received her education in the Brookings Schools and graduated from Brookings High School in 1956. She was employed at South Dakota State University for several years until moving to California in 1960.
Mary was united in marriage to Robert Becker on November 6, 1963 in Venice, CA. While in California, she was employed at various places.
Robert passed away on June 30, 1991 in Los Angeles, CA. Mary continued to live in California until 1996 when she moved to Brookings.
Mary was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Brookings. She enjoyed gardening and bowling.
Mary is survived by her son, Jeffery Becker of Brookings, SD and a brother, Joseph (GarFaye) Narragon of Brookings, SD.
Mary was preceded in death by her father and mother, Orlie and Frances and her husband, Robert.
Mamie Caroline Herrick
January 3, 1921 - February 19, 2012
Mamie C. Herrick, 91, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2012, at United Retirement Center, in Brookings.
Mamie Caroline Overend was born the second of eight children on January 3, 1921 to Simon Peter and Louise (Rust) Overend in rural Bushnell, SD.
She attended country school in rural Elkton before graduating from Brookings High School in 1940. She then received her Teaching Certificate from General Beadle in Madison, SD. She then started teaching Country school in rural Elkton. On February 18, 1951, she was united in marriage to Howard C. Herrick. The couple farmed near Elkton and Howard for several years and Mamie continued to teach country school in Brookings and Moody County. During her summers off from school, Mamie continued her education and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1966. In 1965, the couple moved to Brookings where Mamie started teaching the fourth grade at Central and Medary Elementary Schools before retiring after 42 years of teaching in 1983. Following her retirement, she and Howard spent most of their time traveling and sightseeing in the West and Southwest part of the country. Howard passed away in 1994. Mamie continued to make her home in Brookings until the time of her death.
Mamie loved to go to coffee with her friends, as well as playing card games with them. She also was an avid fisher and spent a lot of time with other retired teachers. Family was an important thing to her as she spent time seeing and visiting her extended relatives. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brookings.
Mamie is survived by her brother, Robert (Pat) Overend, of San Antonio, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Howard, three sisters and three brothers.
Funeral services will be held 10:30am on Friday, February 24, 2012 at First Presbyterian Church, in Brookings.
Visitation will from 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Thursday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings.
