Alice T. Bortnem Kean
May 26, 1916 - February 24, 2012

Alice T. (Bortnem) Kean, 95, of Lake Placid, FL and formally of Brookings, SD, died Friday, February 24, 2012 at Lake Placid Florida Hospital in Lake Placid, FL.

Alice T. Bortnem was born on May 26, 1916 in Brookings County, South Dakota, the daughter of John R. and Carrie (Overskei) Bortnem.

Alice spent her early years and received her education in rural schools in Brookings County, Brookings High School and graduated from Volga High School in 1934. She continued her education at Madison Normal in Madison, SD.

She was united in marriage to Thomas Kean on October 4, 1953 in Brookings, SD. Alice was then employed at the Brookings Hospital for several years. After their marriage they lived in Milbank, SD, where she was employed at the Milbank Hospital and Lakefield, MN, until moving to Two Harbors, MN, where they lived for thirty years. In 1990, they moved to Brookings, SD. Thomas died on March 20, 1995 in White, SD.

Alice was a member of the Ascension Lutheran Church. She especially enjoyed golfing, curling, hunting and fishing.

She is survived by one daughter, Judy Guinn of Lake Placid, FL; one son, Nyles Kean and his wife Judith of Two Harbors, MN; nine grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene Barrett of San Leandro, CA, and Lois DeGeest, and her husband, Boyd of Winona, MN.

Alice was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, five brothers and five sisters.

Funeral services have been set for 11:00am Friday, March 2, 2012 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 5:00pm to 7:00pm Thursday, March 1, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home in Brookings, SD.

Robert Lee Nuttbrock
September 16, 1922 - February 25, 2012

Robert Lee Nuttbrock, 89, of Brookings, died Saturday, February 25, 2012 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.

Robert Lee Nuttbrock was born September 16, 1922, in Willow Lake, SD; he was one of 10 children born to Harm and Martha Nuttbrock.

Bob graduated from Willow Lake High school and joined the army in l943. He served 3 1/2 years during WWII in the military police in the Army Air Corps based in Europe.

He married Marion A. Lambert from Bradley, SD on February 9, 1948. To this union, five children were born. In his early years, he worked as a CocaCola and 7Up driver. He then co-owned a Gambles store with his brother, and that led to his lifelong sales career. He was the automotive manager at the Tempo and Sears stores in Huron for over 20 years. Later, as he neared retirement, he enjoyed selling cars in Clark, SD.

Bob loved cars and hunting and fishing. Coming from a very musical family he especially enjoyed playing his guitar at the family jam sessions. He was a lifetime member of the VFW.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Marion, of 64 years; four children, Joan (Clarence) DenOuden, Pierre, Dorothy (Jim) Morgan, Brookings, Robert, Pierre and Mary Kay (David) Haagenson, Baltic; one sister, Rose Schlaback, Oregon, one sister-in-law, Margie Lambert, Florence, SD, seven grandchildren, Lora, Julie, Mark, Annie, Marie, Haley, and Amy; five great-grandchildren, Jessica, Travis, Josie, Noah, and Jake. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Anne Marie, and eight siblings.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1st at Rude's Funeral Home (105 W. 8th St. South) in Brookings, SD. The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, March 2nd at St. Thomas More Catholic Church (1700 8th St. South) in Brookings, SD. Interment will be at St. Boniface Cemetery in Clark, SD on Saturday, March 3, 2012.

Leona M. Reed
August 26, 1921 - March 1, 2012

Leona Marie Reed, 90, of Brookings, SD, died Thursday, March 01, 2012 at Brookview Manor, Brookings, SD.

Leona Marie Bates was born on August 26, 1921 in Trent, SD, the daughter of Lester and Minnie (Albers) Bates.

Leona received her education in Trent, SD. Leona was united in marriage to Merlin Reed on February 28, 1940. After their marriage they farmed in Brandt, SD and White, SD until moving to Brookings in 1965. During their marriage they also lived in Sioux Falls, SD and Trent, SD. Merlin passed away in September of 1983.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Brookings, the American Legion Auxiliary in White, SD and a past President of the Higgins Jesson Post.

She enjoyed spending time with her family and going for coffee with her good friends.

Leona is survived by one son, Dennis (Arla) Reed of Brookings, SD; two daughters, Sandra Reed of Brookings, SD and Vicki Lucas of Brookings, SD; one son-in-law, Roger Jorgensen of Sioux Falls, SD, two sisters-in-law, Gladys Bates of Sioux Falls, SD and June Reed of Hendricks, MN; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bob and Mary Reed of Kansas City, MO; 9 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

Leona was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Merlin, one daughter, Karen, one son-in-law, James Lucas, two brothers, Harvey and Don, one sister, Alma Handberg and one granddaughter, Michelle (Reed) Raske.

Funeral Services have been set for 1:00pm, Tuesday, March 6, 2012 at First United Methodist Church, Brookings, SD. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm Monday, March 5, 2012 at Rude’s Funeral Home, Brookings, SD.

Mary Jean Redmond
June 4, 1924 - January 29, 2012

Mary Jean Redmond, 87, of Brookings, passed away surrounded by her loving family, Sunday, January 29, 2012 at Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls.

Mary Jean Redmond was born on June 4, 1924, in Bushnell, SD, the daughter of John Francis and Belva (Rexford) Collins.

Mary received her education in Aurora, SD, and was a graduate of the Aurora High School in 1942. She attended Madison Normal. After receiving her education, she was employed at the A.S.T.P. School in Brookings for one year. She then moved to Indianola, NE, where she was employed at the Prisoner of War Camp. On May 6, 1944, she married Cpt. Kenneth Redmond. After being discharged from the US Army, they moved to Chicago, IL, where she worked at Western Electric. They later moved back to Aurora, SD where she worked at various places including City Cleaners, Ben Franklin and the County Treasurer. Mary was then employed by Norwest Bank for 13 years. Kenneth died June 26, 1979 in Brookings. Mary then worked at Jackson’s Jewelry until she retired in 1990. After her retirement she worked at Johnson Jewelry for eight years.

She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, St. Thomas Guild, VFW, and the Rural Letter Carriers Association.

Mary is survived by one son, Michael (June) Redmond, of Brookings; five daughters, Becky (Don) Salonen, of Sioux Falls, SD, Betty Steen, of Sioux Falls, SD, Lori (F. "Butch") Oseby, of Crooks, SD, Teresa (Randy) McLagan, of Brookings, SD and Mary Frances Redmond, of Eden Prairie, MN; one son-in-law Gail Zimmerman, of Groton, SD; 18 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one brother, John Collins, of Brookings, SD; two sisters-in-law, Virginia Collins and Marilyn Collins, both of Brookings, SD and many nieces and nephews.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one daughter, Susan, one infant granddaughter, Tennille Marie Zimmerman, two brothers, Thomas and Robert, two sisters-in-law Peg Redmond and Dorothy Schuler, and her best friend Shotzie.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30am Thursday, February 2, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, in Brookings. Visitation will be from 4pm to 7pm Wednesday at Rude’s Funeral Home, in Brookings, with a Wake service starting at 6:30pm.

Arville G. Mohrmann
(June 22, 1917 - September 13, 2008)

Arville Mohrmann, age 91, of Watertown; formerly of Madison, died Sat., September 13, 2008 at the Jenkins Living Center, Watertown.

Arville G. Mohrmann was born June 22, 1917, to Gustav and Lydia (Behlem) Mohrmann at Columbus, NE. He was baptized at Shell Creek Baptist Church in rural Columbus, and graduated from Kramer High School in Columbus. He married Irene DeBoer on February 19, 1941, at Madison, and the couple farmed at Columbus for 15 years. They moved to Madison in 1956 and farmed for 25 more years. He retired in 1981 and they moved into Madison. They enjoyed traveling.

Arville served as a Deacon at West Center Baptist Church and was a past member of Kiwanis.

PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: his parents and two brothers, Leonard and Allan Mohrmann.

SURVIVORS: include his wife, Irene of Watertown; two sons, Ronald (Donna) Mohrmann of Bloomington, MN and Roger (Marna) Mohrmann of Watertown; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; one brother, Gus (Bernice) Mohrmann of Greeley, CO; one sister, Lois Menke of Amarillo, TX; and many relatives and friends.

Marie Hageman
Oct. 28, 1922 – Oct. 1, 2014

Madison, Wis. - Marie Hageman, 91, formerly of Ramona and Madison, died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014, at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Wis.

Funeral services are at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Ramona. Burial is in St. John Cemetery in Ramona. The family will be present for visitation from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Ellsworth Funeral Home. Visitation continues one hour prior to the service at the church.

Marie Lydia Borchardt was born Oct. 28, 1922, on the family farm near Ramona to Robert and Anna (Hannemann) Borchardt. She attended country school and married Arnold Hageman on Dec. 10, 1941, at St. John Lutheran Church in Ramona. They farmed north of Winfred for 50 years and moved into Madison in 1993. Marie was a nurses’ aide at Bethel Lutheran Home for 14 years.

She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, reading and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She moved to Madison, Wis., in 2003 to be near her daughters. Marie was a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ramona.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Warner of Madison, Wis., and Beverly (Richard Lampson) Hageman of McFarland, Wis.; a son, Don (Carol) Hageman of Ft. Pierre; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a sister; eight brothers; her daughter Nancy Stinson and a grandson, Cleve Stinson.

Ivan E. Jensen
(November 16, 1920 - September 19, 2008)

Ivan E. Jensen, age 87, of Madison, died Friday, September 19, 2008, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home, Howard.

He was born November 16, 1920 at New Hampton, IA to Morris and Elizabeth (Dvorak) Jensen. He attended Lake Preston High School while living with his grandparents, Joseph and Mary Dvorak. He took radio and television repair training in Minneapolis and owned Jensen’s Radio & TV in Watertown for 38 years. Ivan served in the US Navy from 1942-45, during World War II, aboard the USS Twigs and the USS Hunt. He also served in the Korean Conflict from 1950-52 aboard the D449 Destroyer.

He married Jean Harlow on October 13, 1945 at Chicago, IL. They had two sons, David and Dennis. Ivan married Jeanne Wall on August 22, 1982 in California. They lived at Lake Poinsett and moved to Madison in 2001. His hobbies were camping, boating, golfing and his computer.

PRECEDED IN DEATH BY: his parents; one son David; one brother Glen and one sister Geneva.

SURVIVORS: include his wife Jeanne Wall Jensen of Howard; one son Dr. Dennis (Monica) Jensen of Wayne, NE; one daughter-in-law Nikki Jensen of Charlestown, WV; two stepchildren, Dan (Connie) Wall and Starlett (Wally) Reed both of Madison; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister-in-law Rosie Jensen of Watertown.

Visitation: The family will be present at 7:00 PM, Sunday, Sept. 21, 2008 Ellsworth Funeral Home

Funeral Service: 2:00 PM Monday, September 22, 2008 Oldham Lutheran Church, Oldham, South Dakota

Interment: Oldham Lutheran Cemetery, Oldham, South Dakota

Ernest ‘Red’ Heinje - Wilmot
Nov. 22, 1913 – Jan. 6, 2017

Ernest “Red” Heinje, 103, of Wilmot, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2017, at the Wilmot Care Center.

Funeral services are at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilmot Lutheran Church.

The Rev. Sheila Pohl will officiate and burial will be in the Wilmot Cemetery.

Visitation is at the church on Friday from 5 – 7 p.m.

Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the service.

A local survivor is Coleen (George) Ross of Brookings.

Mundwiler Funeral Home of Milbank, is in charge of the arrangements for Ernest Heinje.
