Orpha Stenson
The funeral for Orpha Stenson, of Lidgerwood, ND, was held on Friday, April 4, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Bergen Lutheran Church, Lidgerwood, ND with Reverend Art Hoium officiating. Visitation was Thursday from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Frank-Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Lidgerwood. Burial was at Nidaros Cemetery, near Lidgerwood.
Orpha Medhaug, daughter of Elias and Josephine (Nelson) Medhaug, was born on December 3, 1920 near Veblen, SD. She grew up in rural Veblen, where she attended rural school and graduated from Veblen High School in 1938. She was united in marriage to John Stenson on March 31, 1939 at Sisseton, SD. The couple farmed in Marshall and Roberts counties in South Dakota, and in Richland County, North Dakota until John’s death in 1978. Orpha then moved to Lidgerwood, where she resided until entering Four Seasons Health Care Center in Forman, ND.
Orpha was a member of Nidaros Lutheran Free Church, rural Veblen until 1962, when she joined Bergen Lutheran Church. She was active in Ladies Aid, ALCW and was a Sunday School teacher. She was also active with the Cancer Society, Hospice and Duerr Homemakers. Orpha enjoyed sewing and doing embroidery work.
Orpha passed away Monday, March 31, 2003, at Four Seasons Health Care Center in Forman. She was 82 years old.
She is survived by a son, Mark (Cindy) Stenson, Lidgerwood, ND; two daughters, Karen (Jim) Kiefer, Milbank, SD and Nancy (Ken) Forster, Forman, ND; two brothers, Earl (Gloria) Medhaug and Obert (Maxine) Medhaug, all of Veblen, SD; three sisters, Ruth (Wendell) Westfield, Moorhead, MN, Delores Blair, Roswell, NM and Agnes Finnesand, Sisseton, SD; one sister-in-law, Borghild Medhaug, of Minnesota; eight grandchildren, Jayne (Dan) Richards, Ann (Todd) Langbehn, Chris (Anna) Stenson, Jesse Stenson, Matthew Stenson, Jerod David, Katie (Josh) LeMier and Nathan Forster; and seven great-grandchildren, Cle, Eli and Jimmy Richards, Hannah and Max Langbehn, Tia Stenson and Gavin LeMier.
She was preceded in death by her husband, an infant son Lynn, her parents, three brothers, Gerhard, Marvin and Sander Medhaug, and one sister, Jeannette Haaland.
Casketbearers were Greg Blair, Doug Medhaug, Cal Medhaug, Lee Westfield, Kevin Medhaug and Jason Medhaug. Becky Dathe was organist, Marlene Krause was soloist, and Ed and Jean Langeliers sang a duet. Frank-Dahlstrom Funeral Home in Lidgerwood was in charge of the arrangements.
Milan H. Okeson
Funeral service for Milan Harvard Okeson, 67, of Sisseton, SD was held on Friday, Apr. 4, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Ronald Brugger officiating. Pallbearers were Richard Evenson, Glen
Evenson, Ralph Schmidt, Alan Schmidt, Calvin Finnesand and Dewain Waletich Jr. Organist was Marcia Peterson and soloist was Marlys Brooks. Visitation was Thursday, Apr. 3, 2003 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Friday, Apr.
4, 2003 from 9:00 a.m. until noon at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, and one hour prior to the services at the church. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
Milan was born on September 7, 1935 in Sisseton, SD to Clarence and Elvida (Gudem) Okeson. Milan grew up and attended Dry Wood Lake Country School #1 and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1953. Milan was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church and was a longtime member of Grace Lutheran Church. He served in the National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1963. Milan purchased the Okeson family farm from his parents, where he farmed and ranched his entire life. Milan passed away on March 30, 2003 at his home. Milan was a member of the Hills and Valley Riding Club and loved to care for his cattle.
Milan is survived by his mother, Elvida Okeson of Sisseton, SD; two brothers, Alvin and Gloria Okeson of Palmer, AK and Clifton Okeson of Des Moines, IA; along with one niece, Cathy Okeson of Butte, MT; two nephews,
Philip Okeson of Anchorage, AK and Mark Okeson of Palmer, AK; two grandnieces and one grandnephew.
Milan was preceded in death by his father, and maternal and paternal grandparents.
Alvin Fellbaum
Alvin Fellbaum, 89, Webster died Saturday, May 31, 2003 at Lake Area Hospital.
Services were Wednesday, June 4 at American Lutheran Church, Webster with Pastor Jan FitzGibbon officiating. Casket bearers were Danny O’Bryan, Troy, Charlie, Donald, Gary, Carl and Paul Fellbaum. Honorary casket bearers were granddaughters, Michelle Kaesviharn, Casey Hewitt, Rachael and Ruth Fellbaum.
Burial with military rites was in Webster Cemetery.
Alvin Paul Fellbaum was born April 5, 1914 to Henry and Anna (Loesin) Fellbaum in Hammer, SD. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church near Hammer. He grew up on a farm near Hammer, attended country school and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1934. He farmed with his parents until the fall of 1938 when he moved to Webster, SD where he opened a hardware store.
He married Ruby Hagen June 8, 1941 in Webster. In November 1942 he joined the US Army serving in Normandy, Northern France and Central Europe during WWII. After his discharge in February 1946 he returned to Webster and the hardware business. In 1982 he sold the business but continued to work there part time until his retirement.
He was a member of American Lutheran Church where he was on the church council and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of Kiwanis, Chamber of Commerce, Izaak Walton League, Gideons and served on the advisory board of United Hardware.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and spending time with family.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dale and Alice Fellbaum; Doug Fellbaum; Gene and Gail Fellbaum, two daughters, Patricia and Tom O’Bryan, Woodland Hills, CA; Cheryl and Alan Hewitt, Watertown; sister-in-law, Lylas Fellbaum, Bozeman, MT; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, three sisters and one granddaughter.
Edward Vern Erickson
Funeral service for Edward Vern Erickson, 67, of Veblen, SD was held on Friday, June 13, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Veblen, SD with Rev. Harold Watrous officiating. Pallbearers were Rodney Burhans, Samson Bendickson, Dennis Hunsinger, Maurice Johnson, Pat Adams, and Sam Bendickson. Honorary Pallbearers were "All of Edward's co-workers and friends". Organist was Colleen Halverson and soloist was John Pallansch. Interment was in the Veblen Cemetery, Veblen, SD. Military Rites were provided by the Eddie Robertson American Legion Post #76. Visitation was Thursday, June 12, 2003 from noon until 7:00 p.m. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, and one hour prior to services at the church. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
Edward was born on December 24, 1935 in Veblen, SD to Sven and Ella (Jacobson) Erickson. He attended school near Veblen, graduating from Veblen High School. Edward worked road construction for a year before entering the United States Army on October 8, 1958 where he served until October 7, 1960. After his discharge Edward worked on bridge construction, before working for Medallion Homes in Watertown, SD, where he worked for 38 years. Ed liked to travel, play cards, and loved crossword puzzles. Edward passed away on June 9, 2003 at a Sioux Falls Hospital from pulmonary fibrosis.
Edward is survived by his wife, Ellen Erickson of Veblen, SD; five children, Carol Burhans of Fargo, ND, Mark Erickson of Phoenix, AZ, Shirley and husband Dennis Hunsinger of Apple Valley, MN, Janet Erickson of Washington, DC, and David Erickson of Richfield, MN; two sisters, Mrs. Irene Vedder of Veblen, SD, and Gloria Larson of Britton, SD; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
George Schade
Memorial Service for George Schade, 96, of Sisseton, SD was held on Thursday, December 11, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grace Lutheran Church Chapel, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Ronald Brugger officiating. Interment was in the Sisseton Cemetery. Ruth Meyer was the organist and Carolyn Oetken was the soloist. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
George was born on May 17, 1907 in Hart Township, Roberts County, SD to Rev. Carl and wife Emma (Eikel-berg) Schade. He was baptized June 2, 1907 and was confirmed September 22, 1918 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Rosholt, SD by his father, Rev. Carl Schade.
He grew up on a farm NE of Sisseton in Hart Township. He took normal training course in high school and graduated from Sisseton High School in 1925. He taught two years in rural school, he learned a "limited" amount of Norwegian from a class of nine beginners in his first year of teaching, before he was to enter Luther College in Decorah, IA. He was awarded a scholarship to Luther College where he graduated in 1931.
George attended graduate school at the University of Iowa where he earned a degree in chemistry. Teaching assignments were very hard to come by, but he landed one at Echo, MN where he taught chemistry and three other classes besides acting as principal. This is where he met his wife, Lorene Koecher. They were married November 28, 1935.
He then taught high school in Carpenter, WY. The school and the Benedett's store were the only buildings with electricity. Water had to be carried from the town pump in a five gallon cream can resting on the running board of the car. Next they moved to Goodridge, MN where George taught, still without electricity in their two-room house. After two years at Goodridge, they spent five years in Brooten, MN, one year at Farmington, two years at Blue Earth, MN and a long and satisfying period in Luverne, MN where he taught high school chemistry and physics. George was teacher of the year in 1953.
They retired to Hackensack, MN in June of 1973. Health was failing when he and Lorene moved to Sisseton, SD to be closer to family in October of 1997. They resided in an apartment in Sisseton until Greenleaf Assisted Living Center opened in July of 1999. Lorene passed away in August of 1999. George fell in October of 2003 and broke his pelvic bone. He was admitted to Wilmot Nursing Home on October 13 where he passed away peacefully on December 7, 2003.
George is survived by a sister-in-law, Jeannette Olson of Granite Falls, MN; nieces and nephews, Stanley Schade of Sisseton, SD, Karen Oyen of Las Animas, CO, Ardys Pulse of Rapid City, SD, Jean Potter of Fairmont, MN, and Lois Ziemer of Fargo, ND.
George was preceded in death by his wife; parents; a stillborn son; brothers, John Schade and Carl Schade; and sisters, Elizabeth Schade and Elsa Schade.
Sylvan R. White
Funeral Service for Sylvan R. White, 63, of Sisseton, SD was held on Monday, December 8, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the Tribal Community Center, Agency Village, SD with Rev. Filmore Simon officiating. Pallbearers were Eugene DeMarrias, Lincoln DeMarrias, John Redday Sr., Chris Blue, Larry Bedonie, and Mike Kal-kowski. Honorary pallbearers were "All of Sylvan's friends and relatives". Interment was in the Buffalo Lake Presbyterian Cemetery, Eden, SD. Wake Services were Saturday and Sunday, December 6th & 7th starting at 7:00 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center with Sunday's wake being all night. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
Sylvan Russell White was born on April 25, 1940 in Sisseton, SD to Oscar and Ida (Marks) White. Sylvan loved to travel living in several different locations, working numerous different jobs, including managing a bakery and was a ranch hand. Sylvan enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a sketch artist as well as doing many oil paintings, mostly of wildlife scenes. Sylvan passed away unexpectedly on December 4, 2003 at home.
Sylvan is survived by two sisters, Patty and husband Mike Kalkowski of Kennard, NE; and Martha King of Sisseton; special companion, Almira "Tika" Leith of Sisseton; nieces, Gwen, Shellie, Roxie, and Janet; and nephew Ethan.
Sylvan was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Jeff; brother, Robert; and infant sister, Evelyn.
