Mary Evelyn Huffman Hamlen
Walnut Creek, Calf. -- Mary Evelyn Huffman Hamlen, 77, of Walnut Creek and formerly of Aberdeen, died Friday, April 13, 2001, after a two-year battle with cancer.
Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in Walnut Creek.
Mary Evelyn Huffman was born June 19, 1923, to Earl and Ione (Gilkey) Huffman in Aberdeen. She obtained a bachelor of arts degree in recreational services from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion in 1945. She was an active member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. In 1945, she moved to Los Angeles and worked in the recreational-physical education field.
She married Warner Lee Hamlen Jr. of Hollywood. They lived in California, Michigan, Texas and Illinois before moving to Walnut Creek in 1973. She was a homemaker, working part-time as a school teacher and for the Republican party. In 1989, she moved to Rossmoor, a retirement community in Walnut Creek.
She was involved in the Presbyterian church, local politics, was president of The Gardens of Heather Farm and Rossmoor Lawn Bowling.
She enjoyed bicycling in the United States and Europe, traveling and hiking.
Survivors include one son, Glenn (Marti) Hamlen of Denver; two daughters, Marian (Walt Turner) Hamlen of Durango, Colo., and Heidi Hamlen of Davis, Calif.; one brother, Richard E. Huffman Jr. of Aberdeen; one sister, Dr. Phyllis 'Phyd' Huffman of Rossmoor; and one grandson.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one son.

Curtis Alan Hehn
Aberdeen -- The funeral for Curtis Alan Hehn, 45, of Aberdeen will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Spitzer-Osthus Funeral Home, 320 Sixth Ave. S.E. The Rev. Carol Iwerks will officiate.
Burial will be in Green Mound Cemetery in Leola.
He died Friday, April 13, 2001, near Gettysburg.
Curtis Alan Hehn was born June 26, 1955, to Albert and Lylice (Kamm) Hehn in Leola. When he was a young child, his family moved to Tacoma, Wash., where he attended school. The family later moved to Sidney, Mont., where he graduated from high school. He worked in the oil fields in Montana. He then attended vo-tech school in Fargo, N.D., and later did construction work for several years.
Survivors include two sons, James (Tina) Hehn and Casey Hehn, both of Dalton, Ga.; one brother, Robert Hehn of Aberdeen; two sisters, Carol Hehn of Aberdeen, and Karen Walter of Phoenix; and one granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
Casketbearers will be Tony Kamm, Casey Kamm, Keith Liedle and Jeff Rust.

Kenneth Lee Sommerland
Aberdeen -- The memorial service for Kenneth Lee Sommerland, 69, of 1700 U.S. Highway 281 North, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary, 414 Fifth Ave. N.W. The Rev. Terry Naasz will officiate.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at the mortuary.
He died Monday, April 16, 2001, at the Aberdeen Living Center.
Kenneth Lee Sommerland was born April 12, 1932, to Arthur and Harriett (Delp) Sommerland in Crete, N.D. He attended school in Crete and then entered the North Dakota National Guard Reserves. He farmed with his father until 1957, and then he started working in the construction business. In 1970 he moved to Aberdeen, where he was employed with various contractors until he retired in 1983. He had resided at the Aberdeen Living Center since September 1999.
Survivors include two nieces, Susan Holtey of Aberdeen and Karen Pierson of Oxnard, Calif.; and one nephew, Ken Sobeski of Aberdeen.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Stanley Filipek
Redfield -- Mass of Christian burial for Stanley Filipek, 86, of Redfield and formerly of Frankfort, will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield.The Rev. Roger Geditz will officiate.
His body is being cremated after the service. Burial of cremains will be at a later date in St. Ann'sCemetery in Frankfort. Thelen Funeral Home in Redfield is in charge of arrangements.
A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
He died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at his home.
Stanley Filipek was born Feb. 14, 1915, to John and Sophia (Wojtas) Filipek in Wojnic, Poland. At age 7, he moved with his family to Minneapolis and then to the Doland-Raymond area.
He married Lois Willie on Nov. 28, 1939, at Huron. He farmed near Frankfort until he retired in 1985.
He was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church in Frankfort and St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield.
He enjoyed farming, discussing politics, playing cards, golfing, bowling and hunting.
Survivors include his wife of Redfield; three sons, Ron (Cindi) Filipek of Watertown, Dan (Ruth) Filipek of Rapid City, and Rick Filipek of Redfield; one daughter, Sally Filipek of Frankfort; two brothers, John Filipek of Rapid City, and Frank Filipek of Watertown; two sisters, Helen Hansen of Redfield, and Ann Filipek of Rapid City; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and two brothers.
Casketbearers will be his grandchildren: Gina Brist of Aberdeen, Tiffany Parker of Candler, N.C., Clint Filipek and Casey Filipek, both of Rapid City, Farrah Farmen of Groton, Heath Farmen of St. Cloud, Minn., and Tanner Farmen and Colby Farmen, both of Frankfort.

Redfield -- Stanley Filipek, 86, of Redfield died Wednesday, April 18, 2001, at his home.
His Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield. The Rev. Roger Geditz will officiate.

Lloyd A. Buer
Shadehill -- The funeral for Lloyd A. Buer, 80, of Shadehill will be at 2 p.m. today at the Bentley Memorial Building in Bison. The Rev. Lance Yohe will officiate. Burial will be in the Bison Cemetery with Evanson-Jensen Funeral Home in Lemmon in charge of arrangements.
He died Tuesday, April17, 2001, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck, N.D.
Lloyd Allen Buer was born Jan. 14, 1921, to Peder Johnson and Tilda Bertina (Anderson) Buer on the Buer ranch north of Bison in Marshfield Township. He attended Hooker Country School east of the Buer ranch and high school in Lemmon. At an early age, he began ranching with his father.
He married Gwenivere Allen on June 1, 1949, in Rapid City.
He was a member of Bison American Lutheran Church and served on local school boards and on the Marshfield Township Board. He was a director for the Grand River Grazing Association for 30 years.
He loved ranching, fishing, raising and riding horses, visiting, music and nature. At an early age he learned to play the fiddle and played at many country dances. He later played piano and guitar with bands in the area. He also enjoyed bowling, pitching horseshoes and participating in team roping.
Survivors include his wife of Shadehill; six sons, Lynn (Rhonda) Buer of Britton, Lance (Janet) Buer of Moorcroft, Wyo., Peter (Donna) Buer of Belle Fourche, Corey (Melainie) Buer of Gillette, Wyo., Todd (Anna) Buer of Shadehill and Tracy (Tammy) Buer of Bison; one daughter, Pam (Greg) Ginsbach of Buffalo; two sisters, Bertha Long of Lemmon and Ruby Jensen of Bison; and 20 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
Casketbearers will be his children.

Cecelia Schatz
Sterling, N.D. -- Cecelia Schatz, 80, of Sterling and formerly of Aberdeen, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at a Bismarck, N.D., hospital.
Her funeral will be at noon Tuesday at the Church of St. Anne in Bismarck. The Rev. Edwin Wehner will officiate.
Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Cemetery in Aberdeen with Boelter Funeral Home in Bismarck in charge of arrangements.
A rosary-vigil service will be at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Cecelia Bachmeier was born Oct. 4, 1920, to Lucas and Elizabeth (Werlinger) Bachmeier in Linton, N.D. She grew up in the Newell area.
She married Andrew Mathern on Nov. 13, 1939, in Newell. He died March 8, 1957. Following his death, she raised her children in Aberdeen.
In 1965, she married Dan Schatz in Aberdeen. They then moved to Bismarck.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Andrew Mathern of Minneapolis; five daughters, Elizabeth (John) Pittarelli of Des Moines, Iowa, Mary Jane (Albert) Andres of Medina, N.D., Joan Frances (Wesley) Tritten of Hankinson, N.D., Alice Marie (Alvin) Vetter of Moffit, N.D., and Beverley Jean Bleken of Grand Forks; five stepchildren; four sisters; three brothers; 15 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, one daughter and one brother.
