Edward Vern Erickson
Funeral service for Edward Vern Erickson, 67, of Veblen, SD was held on Friday, June 13, 2003 at 10:00 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Veblen, SD with Rev. Harold Watrous officiating. Pallbearers were Rodney Burhans, Samson Bendickson, Dennis Hunsinger, Maurice Johnson, Pat Adams, and Sam Bendickson. Honorary Pallbearers were "All of Edward's co-workers and friends". Organist was Colleen Halverson and soloist was John Pallansch. Interment was in the Veblen Cemetery, Veblen, SD. Military Rites were provided by the Eddie Robertson American Legion Post #76. Visitation was Thursday, June 12, 2003 from noon until 7:00 p.m. at the Cahill Funeral Chapel, and one hour prior to services at the church. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
Edward was born on December 24, 1935 in Veblen, SD to Sven and Ella (Jacobson) Erickson. He attended school near Veblen, graduating from Veblen High School. Edward worked road construction for a year before entering the United States Army on October 8, 1958 where he served until October 7, 1960. After his discharge Edward worked on bridge construction, before working for Medallion Homes in Watertown, SD, where he worked for 38 years. Ed liked to travel, play cards, and loved crossword puzzles. Edward passed away on June 9, 2003 at a Sioux Falls Hospital from pulmonary fibrosis.
Edward is survived by his wife, Ellen Erickson of Veblen, SD; five children, Carol Burhans of Fargo, ND, Mark Erickson of Phoenix, AZ, Shirley and husband Dennis Hunsinger of Apple Valley, MN, Janet Erickson of Washington, DC, and David Erickson of Richfield, MN; two sisters, Mrs. Irene Vedder of Veblen, SD, and Gloria Larson of Britton, SD; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Edward was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Helen M. Badger Shepherd
Funeral service for Helen M. Badger Shepherd, Ska Ninkata, Yellow Calf Woman, 87, of Wilmot, SD, was held on Saturday, November 5, 2005, at 10:00 a.m. at the Tribal Community Center in Agency Village, SD, with John Cloud III Senior Catechist, Fr. Les Campbell, Rev. Charlie Chan, and Rev. Duane Fox officiating. Organist was Kay Bursheim and Drums were provided by Ridge Runners and Old Scouts. Pallbearers were Eric Shepherd, Steve Shepherd, Edward Shepherd, Robert Diaz, Lazaro Sanchez, William Shepherd, Anthony Rodriquez, and Allan Nygard. Honorary Pallbearers were all of Helen's friends and relatives. There was a wake service held on Wednesday, November 2, 2005, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center in Agency Village, SD, a wake service on Thursday, November 3, 2005, starting at 7:30 p.m. at White Shield, ND, and an all night wake service on Friday, November 4, 2005, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Tribal Community Center in Agency Village, SD. Interment was at the Sisseton Cemetery. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD, was in charge of the arrangements.
Helen was born July 19, 1918 in Elbow Woods, ND to Edward Badger and Edith Sitting Bear Badger. She is the descendent to Chief Sitting Bear and Black Calf Woman and great-great granddaughter of Star.
She attended school at the Bismarck Indian School in Bismarck, ND and Flandreau Indian School in Flandreau, SD. After completing high school, Helen attended nursing school in Pipestone, MN.
She married Smiley Harvey Shepherd on June 26, 1943 in Santa Ana, CA. Helen had eight children, Ferol Hall, Smiley Shepherd Jr., Arlene Bearstail, Geraldine Williams, Marie Shepherd, Ila Garcia, Leslie Rodriquez, and Annette Sanchez. Helen was adopted by Louis Heminger (Shooting Star), and she had nineteen grandchildren, forty-six great grandchildren, and four great-great grand children.
During her lifetime, Helen enjoyed making Star Quilts, blankets, and crafts. She was involved in church activities at Immanuel Church in El Monte, CA and St. Mary's Church in Old Agency, SD. Her greatest enjoyment was playing the piano for the five community churches on the Sisseton-Wahpeton Reservation.
Helen was involved in the Pow Wow celebrations in Los Angeles, CA and Old Agency, SD. She won many prizes as a champion dancer and was Gold Star Mother of the Year. Helen was in many Indian movies in Los Angeles, CA. She took great pleasure in her hobbies, which included puzzles and reading the Sota, MHA, Guide Post Church News Letters and supported the Tiospa Zina Basketball Games and enjoyed watching Grand Ole Opry singers. She will be greatly missed and remembered at the Elderly Days at Magic, Dakota Sioux, and Connection Casinos.
Helen passed away suddenly on November 1, 2005 at a hospital in Fargo, ND.
Helen is survived by her eight children, Ferol Hall of White Shield, ND, Smiley Shepherd Jr. of Shakopee, MN, Arlene Bearstail of Wilmot, SD, Marie Shepherd of Wilmot, SD, Ila Garcia of Los Angeles, CA, Leslie Rodriquez of Fontana, CA, and Annette Sanchez of Rosemead, CA; nineteen grandchildren; forty-six great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a Godchild, Lukie Cloud; and an adopted daughter, June Lockwood.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and Edith; her husband, Smiley Shepherd Sr.; one daughter, Geraldine Williams; two sisters, Florence White and Christine Shepherd; and a God-child, Goldie Max.
Otis Biel
Mundwiler Funeral Home announces the death of Otis Biel, age 79 of Browns Valley, MN. Otis died October 28, 2005 at the Grace Home in Graceville, MN. A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, November 1, 2005 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Wilmot. Father John McMullen, O.S.B. and Father Jack Nordic officiated, and burial was in the St. Anthony’s Cemetery in Browns Valley, MN. Visitation was Monday at the church beginning at 5:00 p.m. followed by a Scripture and Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Visitation was continued Tuesday morning one hour prior to the Mass. Honorary bearers were “All Friends and Relatives and the Staff and Residents of Grace Home.” Casketbearers were Scott Syverson, Don Hegge, Jason Biel, Jeremy Biel, Ervin Firchau, and David Spindler. Music was presented by Neoma Ballhagen, organist; Tim Mundwiler, vocalist and Jerry Niles, vocalist. Military honors were presented by the American Legion, Otto Quande Renville Post #50.
Otis Biel was born March 23, 1926, in Roberts County, SD. He was the son of Otto and Minnie (Winchell) Biel. He attended rural school in Lake Township, Roberts County. He served in the United States Army during World War II, then was again drafted on October 20, 1950 during the Korean Conflict. He was awarded the Distinguished Unit Citation, the United Nations Service Medal, one Overseas Bar and the Korean Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars. He was honorably discharged on July 19, 1952.
Otis was united in marriage on November 9, 1954 with Deloris Spindler at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Sisseton, SD. The couple farmed together, and in 1965, Otis also began working for the Farmer’s Union Coop. He worked there until 1972, and continued to farm until retiring in 1999. He also was a commercial ag sprayer. They moved into Browns Valley in 2002, and moved into the Grace Home in Graceville on January 7, 2005. Otis enjoyed his grandchildren and also enjoyed playing cards.
Otis Biel is survived by his wife, Deloris of Browns Valley, MN; four sons: Jerry and wife Carolyn Biel of Wichita, KS; Larry Biel of Browns Valley, MN; Dan Biel and Michelle Thielke of Wilmot, SD; and Robert and wife Sandy Biel of Browns Valley, MN; eight grandchildren; one step-granddaughter and two great-grandsons; two brothers: Glen and wife Bea Biel of Lewiston, ID; and Arnold Biel of Wahpeton, ND; two sisters: Josie Darrington of Troy, ID; and Janice and husband Vance Osborne of Troy, ID; a brother-in-law, Leo and wife Ardelle Spindler of Veblen, SD; two half sisters-in-law: Dorene Lundgren of Wilmot, SD and Beulah Jensen of Wilmot, SD; two aunts: Alice Biel of Browns Valley, MN and Adele Gonsoir of Webster, SD; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three grandchildren, three half brothers: Willard Lundgren, Lloyd Lundgren and David Jensen; and one half sister, Lucille Fryer.

Clinton D. Isensee
Clint's sudden passing was in his sleep at home in Boise, ID, on Saturday, October 6, 2007. Services were held at Summers Funeral Home in Boise, ID, on Thursday, October 11, 2007 at 11:00 a.m.. A viewing was held Wednesday, October 10, 2007, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Summers.
Clint was born in Sisseton, SD, February 16, 1931 to Lena and David Isensee. He was raised and graduated high school in Lake City, SD; following graduation he entered the army during the Korean Conflict. After his term of duty, he returned to South Dakota, attending college at Brookings and Aberdeen, SD. During the summer months he managed the family-owned Clear Lake Resort at Lake City, SD.
He was a respected business man beginning his career managing a Nevada Uranium mine. He moved with his family to Boise, ID in 1955. In Boise, Clint established himself as a successful real estate developer. His first company was Clint, Cooper, & Graham, later becoming Clint & Graham. He built Crystal Beach and Tamarack Bay Condominiums in McCall, ID.
He was a member of several service organizations including Boise Lions Club, Masons, and the original City Club of Boise. He was a member of Crane Creek Country club. Sports always played an important role in Clint's life. He served on the Idaho Boxing Commission for several years. His favorite pastimes were fishing, hunting, hit and miss golf, and a good game of Gin Rummy with friends.
Clint is survived by his loving wife Joyce of Boise, ID; daughters Rondi Isensee and Vicki (Gary) Moyer; grandchildren Grayson, Spencer, and Anna Nicole Moyer; his special daughters Jill Christison and Jeri Lyn (Larry) Aspenson; and grandchildren Cori and Cole (B-Pa's boy). Other survivors include sisters Jackie Parrish (John) and Donna Wilgers; sister-in-law Marlene Isensee; and ex-wife Mary Nell Isensee. His many nieces and nephews were special to Clint. He was always available for his family. His friends were an important part of his life including breakfast gatherings.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters Lucille Isensee, Olive Cooper, and Bertha Avalos; and brothers Duane, Dwight, and Sherman Isensee.
Dustin Fisher
Funeral Mass for Dustin "Duddy" Fisher, 23, of Sisseton, SD, was held on Wednesday, February 4, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Fr. Walter Butor, Rev. Ronald Campbell, Lay Reader Clyde Kampeska, and Senior Catechist John Cloud III officiating. Pallbearers were Marshall Loney, Ron Neil, Cory Yammerino, Corey Simon, Delbert Harris, Mark Marte, Jon Simon, and Jamie Tchida. Honorary pallbearers were "All of Dustin's Family and Friends". Organists were Billy Kohl and Bill Nelson, and song leader was Lunette Grimsrud. Interment was in St. Peter's Catholic Cemetery, Sisseton, SD. Wake Services were Monday, February 2, and Tuesday, February 3, 2004 starting at 7:30 p.m. at St. Peter's Hall. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
Dustin Robert Fisher was born on February 15, 1980 in Sisseton, SD to Robert and Peggy (Simon) Fisher. He grew up and attended school in Sisseton. Even at the early age of 4, Dustin enjoyed working with his siblings in the salvage yard changing transmissions and working on cars. Dustin later worked as a mechanic at Sisseton Auto Sales where he worked until his death.
Dustin's passion was cars, he loved to work on and drive them. He loved the challenge of working on a car to make it run. Dustin was a friend to everyone and loved to stop and visit with everyone. Dustin passed away on February 1, 2004 from injuries he received in a car accident near Sisseton, SD.
Dustin is survived by his parents, Robert and Peggy Fisher of Sisseton, SD; companion, Valene Heminger of Sisseton, SD; two sisters, Mandi Fisher of Sisseton, SD, and Kelli and husband Tubby Karst of Sisseton, SD; one brother, Ryan Fisher of Sisseton, SD; maternal grandparents, Archie and Ardeth Simon of Sisseton, SD; paternal grandfather, O.J. Fisher of Sisseton, SD; maternal-great-grandmother, Evelyn Simon; four nieces, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Dustin was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Lucille Derby-Foster.
Nathan Lee Tchida
Funeral Mass for Nathan Lee Tchida, 18, of Sisseton, SD, was held on Thursday, February 5, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Sisseton, SD with Rev. Fr. Norman Volk, OMI, celebrant. Organist was Bill Nelson and song leader was Teresa Arbach. Pallbearers were Erik Brown, Aaron Henning, Josh Cunningham, Dane Helgeson, Louis Stevens, Jacob German, Aaron Pond, Eric Wegehaupt, John Yost, Jeremy Bailey, and Juan Casarez. Honorary pallbearers were the Sisseton High School Class of 2004. Interment was in the Goodwill Cemetery, rural Sisseton. Visitation was Wednesday, February 4, 2004 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. with a 7:00 p.m. Scripture Service at St. Peter's Catholic Church, and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, SD was in charge of arrangements.
Nathan was born on February 28, 1985 in Sisseton, SD, to Richard "Rick" and Sharon (Arbach) Tchida. He grew up and attended school in Sisseton and was currently a senior at Sisseton High School. Nathan attended most all Sisseton Redmen High School football and basketball games. He enjoyed rollerblading, camping, and playing Playstation 2. His plans were to graduate this spring from high school, move to Brookings, SD, this summer and work, and then attend South Dakota State University this fall, majoring in civil engineering.
Nathan passed away on February 1, 2004 from injuries received in a motor vehicle crash near Sisseton.
Nathan is survived by his parents, Rick and Sharon Tchida of Sisseton; 12 siblings, John Tchida of Sisseton, Mike (Kristi) Tchida of Sisseton, Chad (Janeen) Tchida of Sisseton, Jamie Tchida of Sisseton, Robin Tchida of Huron, Kelly (Frank) Nelson of Sisseton, Kari Tchida, Carissa Tchida, Nicholas Tchida, Kayla Tchida, Austin Tchida, and Cody Tchida, all of Sisseton; maternal grandparents, Howard and Ardelle Arbach of Sisseton; half-sister, Monique Duarte of Los Angeles, CA; nieces and nephews, Blake Tchida, Diego and Kayla Nelson, Monica Fisher, and Anthony Yammerino, all of Sisseton, and Rachelle, Sarah, Alexia, and Jacob Duarte of Los Angeles, CA.
Nathan was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents John and Olga Tchida, and one brother, Christopher Tchida.
Gladys Irene Paul
Funeral Service for Gladys Irene Paul, 49, of Waubay, SD was held on Tuesday, March 23, 2004 at 2:00 p.m. at the St. James Episcopal Church, Enemy Swim, SD with the Rev. Ronald Campbell, Clyde Kampeska Lay Reader officiating. Pallbearers were John Sargeant, Doug and Jason Rencountre, Ray Rouillard, Stanley Paul, Merle RedBear, Steve Kongi, Robert White, Duane Hislaw, and Thomas Evans. Honorary Pallbearers were Lois Kampeska, Sonia Rouillard, Donnette Eagle, Antoinette Owen, Mary Keeble, Sharon Hopkins, Evelyn Blacksmith, Valorie Rondell, and "All of Gladys's Friends, Relatives, and Co-Workers". Pianist was Billy Kohl with special music by Margaret Keeble, Ursula Eagle, and Franklin and Juanita Keeble, and Wayne Wasicana. Interment was in St. James Episcopal Cemetery, Enemy Swim, SD. Wake Services were Sunday, March 21, 2004 at 7:00 p.m. at the St. James Guild Hall, with an all night wake on Monday, March 22, 2004 at the Hall starting at 7:00 p.m. The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton, South Dakota was in charge of arrangements.
Gladys was born on September 20, 1954 at Sisseton, SD to Eli and Maxine (Rouillard) White. She grew up and attended Enemy Swim Day School and graduated from Waubay High School. After her education Gladys worked at the Enemy Swim Day Care Center. Gladys was married to Joseph Paul Jr. on January 24, 1981 at St. James Episcopal Church. Gladys raised her family and worked in the Gaming Industry for Dakota Sioux Casino for 18 years. She also worked part-time in the security department for Enemy Swim Day School. Her hobbies included making quilts, playing cards, bingo, and attending Pow-Wows. Gladys passed away on March 19, 2004 at a Webster, SD hospital.
Gladys is survived by her husband Joseph Paul Jr. of Waubay, SD three children; Sara Paul and Nathaniel Paul both of Sioux Falls, SD and Joseph Paul III of Waubay, SD; two sisters, Marlene and Thelma White both of Waubay, SD, one brother; Clement White of Watertown, SD and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and maternal and paternal grandparents.
